• Making fonts render similarly across browsers

  I am building a website for a client, and we had hoped to use plain text, not images in the navigation bar. The font we are using is Century Gothic (I believe that this font is available on the majority of PCs and Macs) The problem is, that on different browsers the font renders significantly differnt. In Chrome we got it looking the way we want, but in firefox the text is smaller and bolder. Aside from writing browser specific javascript to alter the font properties, are there any other options to standardize the way the fonts are rendered cross-browser. Perhaps some library or API? Maybe its a matter of being more specific in declaring font properties? Honestly I am stuck and need help.

• Must go through Windows Boot Loader to get to Grub

  I just installed a fresh copy of Precise alongside Windows 7. I have to separate 750GB hard drives; /dev/sda holds the Windows partitions and /dev/sdb holds the Ubuntu partitions. Other than that, these are fresh installs of both Windows 7 and Ubuntu 12.04. Whenever I boot, Grub doesn't load, instead it goes to a black screen with a single blinking (horizontal bar) cursor in the top right corner. However, if I boot, hit escape right as the BIOS/POST screen finishes up, see the Windows Boot Loader and hit escape to make it go back to the BIOS screen. After the BIOS screen, grub shows up and everything functions normally; I can boot into Ubuntu or Win7. I don't want to have to do the Escape, Escape, Wait, Boot trick every time. I have no idea what would be wrong or what information I could give you guys to help diagnose. I have run a sudo update-grub and it found everything normally. I tried adding nomodeset flag in the /etc/default/grub line GRUB_CMDLINE_LINUX_DEFAULT which searching around made me think might work. Thoughts on what I could do to fix this? EDIT: I've tried changing the boot order so that both drives in the BIOS (both are labeled as "Internal HDD") have had a try booting first. I think the problem may be that every time I boot, the BIOS boot order is different... and I have to reset it. It seems to not be stable... but I'm not sure how to go about fixing that either. The machine has both traditional BIOS and UEFI. It came standard in "Legacy" mode; so it is currently set to boot through Legacy mode. I've reinstalled Ubuntu now, and now if I hit escape at the end of the BIOS/POST startup screen, it takes me to GRUB menu. Otherwise it automatically loads Windows. It seems like GRUB is now the acting bootloader, it just doesn't automatically start that unless I ask it to open a bootloader. In my other machines, it has always automatically started at the end of BIOS/POST. EDIT2: Using gparted, I just looked at my partitions, it would seem that my linux-swap partition is currently flagged as the boot partition for my Ubuntu install. I currently only have 2 partitions: one of "ext4" with a mount point of "/" and flag " "; and the "linux-swap" with mount point " " and flag "boot." If I change the boot flag to be on "/," it does not reliably solve the problem. After 10 boots: 2 Booted successfully to GRUB 5 Booted directly to Windows 7 3 booted to the black screen with the cursor and hung there Further research makes me think this is an issue of the BIOS not reliably booting hard drives in the same order or not finding both hard drives. If I ask it to create a "boot menu" sometimes it has 2 entries for "Internal HDD," sometimes 1. Also the list it creates changes order every time I bring it up; so it is not following a consistent boot sequence. Will report back if this is not an issue with GRUB.

• I see files in filezilla, but the internet denies their existance

  I am doing some updates to a 10-year old site, and I am baffled. Everything worked great locally, so I uploaded a bunch of stuff to the server using filezilla. Within filezilla I can see all of the files, but for some reason I get a 404 when trying to view them. It seems as though (at least for the folder Im currently checking) this is happening for items which are "farther down the list" alphabetically. I tried to re-upload a file individually but it didn't change anything. Is this an indication that I hit some sort of limit with the hosting company? And if so why can I still view the files from filezilla? Please offer guidance. I am at a loss.

• Making large scale changes to an economy in a social game

  Are there any examples or case studies of social games, specifically on Facebook, where the developer has made drastic changes to the economy? I'm specifically interested in examples where the old economy was based off of purchasing items with Facebook credits then moving to a new model where the same inventory or similar inventory is sold with a soft currency. The closest comparisons I've been able to find so far are looking at iOS games that have gone from purchase models to freemium models, but haven't found a comparable scenario in a social game besides larger scale MMO's.

• Input Signal Out of Range 1920x1080

  I've recently installed Ubuntu 12.04 on my computer. Now, every time I boot and when I shut down, my monitor goes blank and says "Input Signal Out of Range - Change Setting to 1920x1080 60Hz." Once the computer gets to the login screen, it's okay again. This problem also happens when I try to open any 3d app. My graphics card is NVIDIA GEforce 6150 SE. I tried updating the drivers, but it broke everything and I had to reinstall Ubuntu. Any help?

• Ubuntu boots into tty1 after driver downgrade

  Earlier today I downgraded the driver for my nvidia 240 GT from version 310 to version 304 using ubuntus "additional drivers" utility. After the install I rebooted but instead of opening unity and allowing me to login it booted into tty1 instead. After using the "startx" command I got the message, "nvidia: API mismatch: the nvidia kernel module has version 310.14, but this nvidia driver component has version 304.43." What can I do to solve this? Edit: Solved my own problem by purging all nvidia packaged and reinstalling my drivers.

• New Perl user: using a hash of arrays

  I'm doing a little datamining project where a perl script grabs info from a SQL database and parses it. The data consists of several timestamps. I want to find how many of a particular type of timestamp exist on any particular day. Unfortunately, this is my first perl script, and the nature of perl when it comes to hashes and arrays is confusing me quite a bit. Code segment: my %values=();#A hash of the total values of each type of data of each day. #The key is the day, and each key stores an array of each of the values I need. my @proposal; #[drafted timestamp(0), submitted timestamp(1), attny approved timestamp(2),Organiziation approved timestamp(3), Other approval timestamp(4), Approved Timestamp(5)] while(@proposal=$sqlresults->fetchrow_array()){ #TODO: check to make sure proposal is valid #Increment the number of timestamps of each type on each particular date my $i; for($i=0;$i<=5;$i++) $values{$proposal[$i]}[$i]++; #Update rolling average of daily #TODO: To check total load, increment total load on all dates between attourney approve date and accepted date for($i=$proposal[1];$i<=$proposal[2];$i++) $values{$i}[6]++; } I keep getting syntax errors inside the for loops incrementing values. Also, considering that I'm using strict and warnings, will Perl auto-create arrays of the right values when I'm accessing them inside the hash, or will I get out-of bounds errors everywhere? • Configuring the GPS Intermediate Driver

  Hello, I have a Motorola MC75 with an integrated GPS system that I am trying to use for programming. I have done some research on it and tried setting it up by editing the remote registry of the device according to some specifications that I found on the internet on this blog, http://csharponphone.blogspot.com/2007/07/configuring-gps-intermediate-driver.html. I used the smart phone guide at the bottom of the page but to no avail. Currently, I am trying to test it with the GPS application provided in the Windows Mobile 6 SDK samples. The program will load and begin what looks like the search for satellites but will not locate anything. I do not think the GPS is set up correctly. Does anyone have any helpful insight onto this issue or a guide for configuring the GPSID? Thank you in advance. Also, I have already checked and tried some of the config help on MSDN which does not help me either. I will surely vote for the most helpful answer. Thanks, Zach

The google hits I've found so far recommended to: Use query.declareImports to specify the class i.e. q.declareImports("com.test.zach.SimpleCategory.type"); Specify the fully qualified name of SimpleCategory in declareParameters Neither of these suggestions has worked. By removing .type and recompiling, I can verify that declareParameters can see SimpleCategory just fine, it simply cannot see the SimpleCategory.type, despite the fact that the remainder of the method has full visibility to it. What am I missing?

• Implementing a wrapping wire (like the Worms Ninja Rope) in a 2D physics engine

  I've been trying out some rope-physics recently, and I've found that the "standard" solution - making a rope from a series of objects strung together with springs or joints - is unsatisfying. Especially when rope swinging is relevant to gameplay. I don't really care about a rope's ability to wrap up or sag (this can be faked for visuals anyway). For gameplay, what is important is the ability for the rope to wrap around the environment and then subsequently unwrap. It doesn't even have to behave like rope - a "wire" made up of straight line segments would do. Here's an illustration: This is very similar to the "Ninja Rope" from the game Worms. Because I'm using a 2D physics engine - my environment is made up of 2D convex polygons. (Specifically I am using SAT in Farseer.) So my question is this: How would you implement the "wrapping" effect? It seems pretty obvious that the wire will be made up of a series of line segments that "split" and "join". And the final (active) segment of that line, where the moving object attaches, will be a fixed-length joint. But what is the maths / algorithm involved for determining when and where the active line segment needs to be split? And when it needs to be joined with the previous segment? (Previously this question also asked about doing this for a dynamic environment - I've decided to split that off into other questions.)

• Correct Display configuration. Errors while trying to arrange displays

  I am trying to set up my tv with my laptop trough a VGA cable. The display application in Ubuntu throws a lot of errors to me and I have given up in trying to do it myself. I try to apply the 1920 1080 display. The selected configuration for displays could not be applied Requested size (3200, 1080) exceeds 3D hardware limit (2048, 2048). You must either rearrange the displays so that they fit within a (2048, 2048) square or select the Ubuntu 2D session at login. And Also this: Failed to apply configuration: %s GDBus.Error:org.gtk.GDBus.UnmappedGError.Quark._gnome_2drr_2derror_2dquark.Code3: Requested size (3200, 1080) exceeds 3D hardware limit (2048, 2048). You must either rearrange the displays so that they fit within a (2048, 2048) square or select the Ubuntu 2D session at login. Please Help. @Leozitop No I don't see anything when connected to 1920 1080 because the setup fails before actually applying. Yes there are other resolutions which do work. I believe the problem has something to do with the rotation it is set up. My Ubuntu Display application has only clockwise and counterclockwise options for the TV display. I really don't know why this is happening. Basic procedure: Plug in cable, did not get the resolution I wanted. Changed settings, applied them. Re-peat until desired display is shown. I'm not a computer illiterate, really it baffles me that this is happening. Also, note the TV1 unknown connection which I have no idea what it is. Note, also, that this has nothing to do with the display since W7 on the computer works fine and since while boot up, and also, before starting session in ubuntu the rotation is normal. I'll also mention that I HAVE re-installed Ubuntu since I had posted this question from a Live CD of 12.04 LTS. And that before the posting of the question also using 12.04 before another backup that I had to do, the VGA setup was fine without any problems.

• Virtualbox: host only networking - proxy internet connection

  I'll ask my question first, then give details about where I am coming from: Is it possible to use host only, then have ubuntu act as a proxy to provide internet access to windows? If so, how? I am trying to get the right combination of networking for my virtualbox windows client VM (win7). My host is ubuntu 10.10 (maverick). I believe I understand the basic network options (please correct me if I am incorrect): NAT - Host can't communicate with guest but guest has access to all host's adapters Host only - Separate adapter but guest has no net access Bridged - bridge an adapter in the host with the virtual adapter to give the host access to the host adapter I am trying to give my win guest internet access, but also access the host in a separate network. Bridged only works when the host is connected to the internet (this is a laptop) so when it's not connected the network is down. Thanks I appreciate your help.

My understanding is that my basic options are thus: I can go with a hosting service that specifically provides Plone. I know of WebFaction, but what others exist? Also, I’d have two stipulations for a Plone hosting service: (a) It needs to use Plone 4, for which I’ve developed my site, and (b) it needs to allow me SSH access to a home directory (including the Plone configuration), so that I may use my custom development eggs and such. I could use a VPS hosting service. What are my options here? Again, I need something cheap and scaled to my level. I could use Amazon EC2 or a similar service (please tell me of any) and pay by the tiniest unit of data. I’m a little scared of this because I have no idea how to do a cost-benefit analysis between this and a regular VPS host. The advantage of this approach would be that I only pay for what I use, making it very scalable, but I don’t know how the overall cost would compare to any VPS host under similar circumstances. What factors enter into the cost of Amazon EC2? What can I expect to pay under either option for regular traffic for a new website? Which one is more desirable for when a rush of visitors drive up my bandwidth bill? One last note: I know Plone isn’t common for websites for individuals, but please don’t try to talk me out of it here; that’s a completely different subject. For now, assume I’m sticking with Plone for good. • What needs to be done to port a Windows Flash game to Android?

  My team has developed a game using Flash (with Lua embeded) that targets Windows. And we want to port that game to Android (also iOS in the future). It's acceptable to rewrite the Flash part of client. And some other team in our company recommended Unity3D to replace the Flash part. Since we have no experience in Android/iOS development, we would need to learn some new tool/language anyway. So we would like that learning still be useful after the porting and when we starting a new game. Any thoughts? Edits: I think it is worth noticing the background of the game : the project is started by a tester and developer, both without knowing much about flex and actionscript. They built the game while learning, so most of the code is hard to maintain. I and other two developers joined the project after a year or so when one has leave (and the other be our manager). The other two developers are just graduates with little experience and little knowledge of flex. I am good at the server part and the c# language. Based on the fact that the code is hard to maintain (and we do need to change a lot of code to make the game easier to playe in a mobile device), and I am good at c# (and learning). I still tend to do the porting with Unity, which could get better performance and possibly save time.

• I cannot search/find any applications in the Dash on 12.04

  Its been a while since I booted my Ubuntu (12.04), but when i did I had several updates (over 100) and I installed them along with rebooting. These updates seemed to mess with my video driver but I seemed to have fixed this. My problem is that my applications do not show anywhere. I can open them via terminal or if there are shortcuts (such as on the toolbar) but if I hit Super and go to Apps, there is nothing. This is true if I hit Super and search any app name nothing will come back (except for files). I need help to understand what happened! Also for some reason I can't upgrade to 12.10 (I assume because I have 12.04 and not 12.04.1, which I don't understand how to get).

• Why does Farseer 2.x store temporaries as members and not on the stack? (.NET)

  UPDATE: This question refers to Farseer 2.x. The newer 3.x doesn't seem to do this. I'm using Farseer Physics Engine quite extensively at the moment, and I've noticed that it seems to store a lot of temporary value types as members of the class, and not on the stack as one might expect. Here is an example from the Body class: private Vector2 _worldPositionTemp = Vector2.Zero; private Matrix _bodyMatrixTemp = Matrix.Identity; private Matrix _rotationMatrixTemp = Matrix.Identity; private Matrix _translationMatrixTemp = Matrix.Identity; public void GetBodyMatrix(out Matrix bodyMatrix) { Matrix.CreateTranslation(position.X, position.Y, 0, out _translationMatrixTemp); Matrix.CreateRotationZ(rotation, out _rotationMatrixTemp); Matrix.Multiply(ref _rotationMatrixTemp, ref _translationMatrixTemp, out bodyMatrix); } public Vector2 GetWorldPosition(Vector2 localPosition) { GetBodyMatrix(out _bodyMatrixTemp); Vector2.Transform(ref localPosition, ref _bodyMatrixTemp, out _worldPositionTemp); return _worldPositionTemp; } It looks like its a by-hand performance optimisation. But I don't see how this could possibly help performance? (If anything I think it would hurt by making objects much larger).

• Will adding top level directories with similar structure to existing directories change the SEO of my site?

  I've been pointed this way for SEO related questions and this one has had me pondering for a little while now. I'm recreating a site's structure. The website's content is generated through several feeds and unless I want to place each and every - of the 10,000 odd - venues into their own category manually, I can't avoid categorising each item by using its address. The current the structure looks like this Homepage > region > county > city/town > venue page and the URL looks like domain/region/county/city/venue/ I'm relatively happy to use this structure as it's not too convoluted. However we also promote deals and we also group the venues into their respective franchise, so that leads to URLs such as: domain/groups AND domain/deals My question is: how would the directory structure look with these new additions? Would I have a URL that looks like domain/deals/region/county/city/venue or domain/group/region/county/city/venue and just put a 301 or a canonical link tag on the page to prevent the duplicate pages competing with each other? Am I just worrying about it needlessly and perhaps link straight from domain/deals to the venue page URL domain/region/county/city/venue, this bothers me a bit though as the deals and groups will not be in the breadcrumbs.

• Dual Boot Installation with Win7 - Install Ubuntu in New Partition

  Under Win 7 I created a new 100 GB disk partition (L:) to install Ubuntu 12.04. I then rebooted from the Ubuntu install CD, selected "Install side by side" and now I'm stuck. I end up at the Advanced Partitioning Tool and I do not know how to tell the installer to use the L: partition. Any help would be appreciated. Thanks! Thank you. I have successfully installed Ubuntu 12.04 alongside Win 7. However, now when I reboot the laptop it goes directly to Win 7 with no option to choose Ubuntu. Any thoughts on how to get the boot-time choice to show up? Thanks!

• Licensing Options for a dead project

  I'm currently working on a project where the original author informally told me that he didn't want to publish the source. Since then, the original author has gone leaving me to be the sole developer on the project. I've tried to contact him several times about making the project open source so that I can have other developers assist me but he is not responding to any communications. I'm not planning on trying to make money of the software, I just want a general license that allows me to put the code on GitHub or BitBucket so that other people in the community can assist me with the development. Can I do this since he is gone and not responding to any form of communication? Is there a time period I need to wait? I know what I asking for is legal advice, I just have no idea where to start looking to find the answer so I decided to start here.

• MongoDB - proper use of collections?

  In Mongo my understanding is that you can have databases and collections. I'm working on a social-type app that will have blogs and comments (among other things) and had previously be using MySQL and pretty heavy partitioning in an attempt to limit possible concurrency issues. With MySQL I've stuffed all my user data into a _user database with several tables to further partition the data (blogs, pages, etc). My immediate reaction with Mongo would be to create a 'users' database with one collection per user. In this way user 'zach' blog entries would go into the 'zach' collection with associated comments and such becoming sub-objects in the same collection. Basically like dynamically creating one table per user in MySQL, but apparently without the complexity and limitations that might impose. Of course since I haven't really used Mongo before I'm having trouble gauging the (ahem..) quality of this idea and the potential problems it might cause down the road. I'd like user data to be treated a lot like a users directory in a *nix environment where user created/non-shared (mostly) gets put into one place (currently with MySQL that would be the appname_users as mentioned above). Most of the users data will be specific to the users page(s). Some of the user data which is queried across all site users (searchable user profiles) is currently kept in a separate database/table and I expect things like this could be put into a appname_system database and be broken up into collections and/or application specific databases (appname_profiles). Anyway, since the available documentation on this is currently a little thin and my experience is extremely limited I thought I might find a little guidance from someone with a better working understanding of the system. On the plus side I'd really already been attempting to treat MySQL as a schema-less document-store and doing this with Mongo seems much more intuitive/sane/rational so I'm really looking forward to getting started. • Maven: properties not being substituted

  I'm using a maven plugin for install4j in my project, located here. That plugin lets you pass variables to install4j using the <compilerVariables> section.   Erik Russell and Giles Marino were our speakers for the June 2011 IASA South East Florida Chapter meeting.    Attendees filled all available seats at the Microsoft office conference room where the event was held. This highlights the high interest in Enterprise Architecture as a career track and chartered project role. Also in attendance were our Board of Directors and Alex Funkhouser, President, Sherlock Technology.   Rainer Habermann, Chapter President, kicked off the meeting by introducing our speakers and Board of Directors.   Alex Funkhouser, President of South Florida’s staffing firm Sherlock Technology spoke briefly about available Software Architect positions in the area. Alex also congratulated and presented this week’s Sherlock Raffle winner with $500 in cash.   Our speakers Giles and Erik then proceeded with their talk. Erik presented a business case in the government sector where Enterprise Architecture helped a government entity cut costs and streamline its various business operations. Technologies leveraged in Erik’s demonstrated project were Java-based.   Giles then followed with a thorough demonstration of the Architecture patterns he used to migrate a complete backend system for an insurance company to the .Net Platform.   Audience was very engaged with our speakers as evidenced by the large number of follow-up questions asked at the end of the talk.   We greatly enjoyed Giles and Erik’s talk and look forward to having them share with us more of their adventures as Enterprise Architects in the near future.   Below are some photos of the event.   Sam Abraham Secretary- IASA South East Florida Chapter. http://www.iasaglobal.org/iasa/South_East_Florida.asp Chapter President - Rainer Habermann kicks off our meeting.   Sherlock Technology President Alex Funkhouser holding Sherlock's weekly cash prize. • Disable mod_cache to fix website

  I am working on a website that runs on WordPress. The an error occurs when accessing the blog page that it displays the RSS feed (in XML) rather than the posts. After some research I found out the when enabling mod_cache this error sometimes occurs. I see when looking at the apache2 modules enabled apache2ctl -M it shows that mod_cache, mod_mem_cache and mod_disc_cache are enabled. What should I disable in order to resolve this problem?
