• Accessing guests on virtual network when connected to host via PPTP

  I'm setting up a development machine which runs Ubuntu 12.04 and KVM for virtualization. I have a guest running Ubuntu 12.04 which can be accessed from the host via its IP address which is assigned by libvirt. The guest can also access the internet, no problem there. However, now I want to setup PPTP so I can connect to the host (from my workstation running Windows 7) and directly access guests without relying on SSH port forwarding. I can connect from my W7-machine to the host (PPTP), but I cannot access any virtual machines (which are accessable from the host directly).   I'm attempting to change the hostname on my shared server with Slicehost so I can setup Postfix as a null client. I edited /etc/hosts and after reboot, the hostname is still incorrect.   I have sshed into a linux box and I'm using dvtm and bash (although I have also tried this with Gnu screen and bash). I have two terminals, current /dev/pts/29 and /dev/pts/130. I want to redirect the input from one to the other. From what I understand, in /dev/pts/130 I can type: cat </dev/pts/29 And then when I type in /dev/pts/29 the characters I type should show up in /dev/pts/130. However what ends up happening is that every other character I type gets redirected. For example, if I type "hello" I get this: /dev/pts/29 | /dev/pts/130 $ | $ cat </dev/pts/29 $ el | hlo This is really frustrating as I need to do this in order to redirect the io of a process running in gdb (I've tried both run /dev/pts/# and set inferior-tty /dev/pts/# and both resulted in the aforementioned behavior). Am I doing something wrong, or is this a bug in bash/screen/dvtm?

  I've created a kickstart script to install CentOS 5.5 (32bit) in a fully automated way. The DNS/DHCP setup correctly gives the system the right hostname in both the forward and reverse lookups. dig node4.mydomain.com. +short 10.10.10.64 dig -x 10.10.10.64 +short node4.mydomain.com. In the state the installed system is right after the installation completed is as follows: cat /etc/sysconfig/network NETWORKING=yes NETWORKING_IPV6=yes GATEWAY=10.10.10.1 HOSTNAME=node4.mydomain.com echo ${HOSTNAME} node4.mydomain.com cat /etc/hosts # Do not remove the following line, or various programs # that require network functionality will fail. 127.0.0.1 localhost.localdomain localhost ::1 localhost6.localdomain6 localhost6 10.10.10.64 node4 My problem is that this automatically generated hosts file is slightly different from the way I want it (or better: the way Hadoop wants it). • LAN not picking up gigabit connection through patch panel

  I have just purchased 2 FVS318G switches to install at my store. How this is set up is the server is in the back room. We have Cat 5E ran up through the ceiling and is patched into a panel in the back room. The 2 switches I just purchased are right next to the server in the back where all the cables patch in. I do a direct connection from the server to switch, avoiding the patch panel completely, and receive 1.0 gbps connection no problem. When i patch in the register computers from the front into the panel and then to the switch I am only getting 100 mbps on the registers up front. The patch panel does say Cat 5E on it but I am not sure if there is any interference in the line somewhere and I cannot get the full 1.0 gbps to the front registers like I want. Any ideas??

  On my host I am using libvirt and a KVM guest. When the host is shutting down, libvirt suspends the guest. When the host is starting up, libvirt resumes the guest. The problem is, if the guest is suspended and resumed after 24 hours for example, then the guest time is 24 hours in the past. • Grep the whole body of a function

  Supposing I know that someFile.php contains the definition for someFunction(). How would I go about displaying the whole body of the function in stdout? If I know that the body is 10 lines long then I would use cat someFile.php | grep -A 10 "function someFunction" [1] but in reality the function could be any arbitrary length. I figured that with sed I could use Vimesque commands such as /function someFunction<Return>/{<Return>% [2] but I can't figure out exactly how to format it. Ideally, the PHPDoc before the function would be output along with the function. Any help or links to the appropriate fine manual would be appreciated. Thanks! I have a little home server set up, for internet sharing, samba, basic http, dlna mediaserver and what not, and I happend to have a domain at hand, so I thought why not direct it to this computer? I have a BIND 9.8.0 installed, and - afaik - configured it properly. For a few days, the public view did not worked, and I really did not cared, since the local view worked. But now suddenly, even the local view fails. • Excel macro: Replace enitre cell contents; replace 1 but not 10, 11, 21 etc

  I need to replace a large amount of numbers with words in an Excel spreadsheet. Eg: 1 = hello 12 = goodbye 4 = cat etc. I can do it with the standard search and replace, but i have a large list to work through (about 240 number/word combos), so i figured i would use a macro. I have this: Sub findreplacer() For Each mycell In Range("A1:A1000") mycell.Replace What:="1", Replacement:="hello" mycell.Replace What:="12", Replacement:="goodbye" mycell.Replace What:="4", Replacement:="cat" Next End Sub But it replaces the 1 in 12 so the cell reads hello2 instead of goodbye. How can i make it just affect cells that only contain the specific number, the way 'match entire cell contents' works? Any help appreciated.

• Xen HVM guest has severe clock drift

  I am seeing a very severe clock drift on my Xen HVM VPS, rented from a hosting provider, so I don't have access to the dom0 system. I continuously run ntpd, but the clock drifts by as much as 30 seconds in 5 minutes and NTP cannot keep up. Has anyone experienced this?   I have a question about a non-optimal setup and the practical implications of this. Ideally you would place the ESXi server right in the same room as the FreeNas white box end of question. My situation is this: I have a run of ~125ft of Cat 5e connecting a ESXi server to a FreeNas whitebox in the server room. I know the distance of the ethernet cable is within the maximum distance for ethernet traffic but I have two questions... Can Cat 5e support gigbit speeds at that distance if the switch on the back end is a linksys SRW-2048? Should I be concerned about the distance causing data read and write timeouts in the SCSI portion--(disk operations of the ESXi)?

• Ping Unknown Host on CentOS at EC2

  Weird problem. We have a collection of servers running CentOS 5 on EC2. The setup includes two DNS servers and two LDAP servers. DNS has a CNAME pointing at the primary LDAP server. One machine (and only one machine) is giving me problems. I can ssh into the server using LDAP authentication. But once I'm on the machine, ping won't resolve the LDAP host even though DNS seems to work fine. • Grep all files in a directory and print matches with file name

  I have a list of log files that I create as part of a video encoding script that I wrote. I would like to search all of them and print out certain statistics from the encode - how fast they were encoded, what settings were used, etc. I can search for the average framerate in one file via this 1 liner: cat ${filename} | grep average which outputs: work: average encoding speed for job is 23.211176 fps and search for the ratefactor: cat ${filename} | grep RF I would like to search all files in the directory and print off one, or prefereably both pieces of information along with the filename. Is there any way I can use find or grep to get this in a one-liner, or do I need to write a script? I would like output like this: /home/javanix/filename.log <RF line> <average line> I would like this to either work using FreeBSD 9 or Ubuntu 12.04.

  I'm doing some basic stress testing of a Linux kernel network IWF with netcat. The set-up is fairly simple. On the target side: nc -l -p 10000 > /dev/null And on my desktop I was running: cat /dev/urandom | nc 192.168.0.20 10000 I'm using urandom for some poor-mans fuzz testing. However I find that even at this rate I can break something quite quickly. EDIT So I've been playing with trickle to rate limit how fast I'm generating data: cat /dev/urandom | trickle -u 10 nc 192.168.0.20 10000 But it's hard to tell if this is working. What would be really useful is a the pv equivilent of trickle that can work with pipes.

  I'm running the linux distro on my server.When i want to verify the size of the disk, i'm issuing this commnand to get the output. df -h But it does not produce ANY output.Strangely enough when i'm issuing other command such as fdisk -l or du -h it can show output normally. • Extracting httpdocs from Plesk Panel 9.5.4 Webserver backup file

  Good day, I am having problems manually extracting domains from Plesk 9.5 backup that was FTPed onto my back up server. I have followed the article http://kb.parallels.com/en/1757 using method 2. The problem is here: zcat DUMP_FILE.gz DUMP_FILE My backup file CP_1204131759.tar is a tar archive and zcat does not work with it. So I proceed to run the command: cat CP_1204131759.tar CP_1204131759. But when I try # cat CP_1204131759 | munpack I get an error that munpack did not find anything to read from standard input. I went on to extract the tar backup file using the xvf flags and got a lot of files (20) similar to these ones: CP_sapp-distrib.7686-0_1204131759.tgz CP_sapp-distrib.7686-35_1204131759.tgz CP_sapp-distrib.7686-6_1204131759.tgz How best can I extract the httpdocs of a domain from this server wide Plesk 9.5.4 backup?

• How to disable ^C from being echoed on Linux on Ctrl-C

  When I press Ctrl-C in any pseudoterminal (xterm, gnome-terminal, rxvt, text console and SSH) in Karmic Koala, the string ^C gets echoed to the terminal in Ubuntu Karmic Koala. This hasn't happened in Ubuntu Jaunty Jackalope. I'd like to get rid of the extra ^C. Example: $ cat foo foo ^C $ _ I got the above by typing C, A, T, Enter, F, O, O, Enter, Ctrl-C. I want to get rid of the ^C, and get this for the same keypresses: $ cat foo foo $ _ I tried setting stty -echoctl, which created a single-character HT (or a box with Unicode 0003 in it) instead of the ^C. I want to see absolutely nothing when I press Ctrl-C. I'm using Linux linux 2.6.31-20-generic-pae #57-Ubuntu SMP Mon Feb 8 10:23:59 UTC 2010 i686 GNU/Linux

• In BASH, are wildcard expansions guaranteed to be in order?

  Is the expansion of a wildcard in BASH guaranteed to be in alphabetical order? I forced to split a large file into [10Mb pieces][1] so that they can be be accepted by my Mercurial repository. So I was thinking I could use: split -b 10485760 Big.file BigFilePiece. and then in place of: cat BigFile | bigFileProcessor I could do: cat BigFilePiece.* | bigFileProcessor In its place. However, I could not find anywhere that guaranteed that the expansion of the asterisk (aka wildcard, aka '*' ) would always be in alphabetical order so that .aa came before .ab ( as opposed to be timestamp ordering or something like that ). Also, are there any flaws in my plan? How great is the performance cost of cating the file together?

• Install multiport module on iptables

  I'am trying to install "fail2ban" on Cubidebian, a Debian port for Cubieboard (A raspberry like board). The following rule failed due to "-m multiport --dports ssh" options (It works, when i run manually the command without multiple options). $ iptables -I INPUT -p tcp -m multiport --dports ssh -j fail2ban-ssh" iptables: No chain/target/match by that name. When i make a cat on "/proc/net/ip_tables_matches", i see that multiport module is not loaded: $ cat /proc/net/ip_tables_matches u32 time string statistic state owner pkttype mac limit helper connmark mark ah icmp socket socket quota2 policy length iprange ttl hashlimit ecn udplite udp tcp What can i do to compile or to enable the multiport module? • Under *nix, how can I find a string within a file within a directory ?

  Hi all. I'm using ubuntu linux, and I use bash from with a terminal emulator every day for many tasks. I would like to know how to find a string or a substring within a file that is within a particular directory. If I was knew the file which contained my target substring, I would just cat the file and pipe it through grep, thus: cat file | grep mysubstring But in this case, the pesky substring could be anywhere within a known directory. How do I hunt down my substring ?
