  • Suggestions for Summer Intern Application Assignments

    As part of our application process we want prospective college interns to complete an assignment on their own - either programming or analytical - to give us something tangible to evaluate such as code or a flowchart. I have two ideas for these assignments, one programming and one analytical, I am interested in gathering feedback about these. Programming Assignment Generate an a month's calendar for a given date. The first row should indicate the days of the week (e.g. Sunday - Saturday). Each subsequent row should contain a week's days. The date supplied should be highlighted (e.g. bolded). I am thinking we'll probably proscribe the output format even more strictly - probably down to what the HTML source should look like including CSS classes. Thinking is this forces answerers to actually do some work if they merely copy a solution from the internet. Analytical Assignment Diagram or describe in prose a system for managing a set of traffic lights for traffic at a four way intersection. Each direction (i.e. North, South, East and West) has two lanes (i.e. right and left). The left lane is turn only and has green arrow light to indicate right of way. The system is able to detect if lanes have cars in them and change the lights accordingly. I would expect a flow chart or some prose describing a finite state machine that deals with each contingency. This would hopefully provide some indication of the applicant's ability to reason through a logic problem of sorts and articulate an approach for solving. Areas Seeking Feedback Is it unreasonable to ask this of applicants? If not, is it better to request before or after a phone screen? Are these questions too hard or easy for a collegiate audience? Any suggestions for alternate questions? Do these seem like good tools for analyzing people who would part of a software development life cycle? Programming language suggestions - I'm thinking Java, Python and/or C# (we're actually a ColdFusion shop).

Windows 2008 IIS 7 Plesk 9.x The problem started when Level 2 of my hosting company adjusted a FTP users to have certain permissions....apparently he did this outside of plesk and it has been nothing but permission headaches all around. Connections....uploading files, etc. now somethings gone wrong where plesk isnt even loading properly and IIS too... I need to see if someone can fix this remotely before I give the green light to format and reinstall server, IIS, Plesk and Domains! looking to pay a company to get this working ASAP - This is not requested as a free job so I need someone good and who can fix it without the huge hassle of formatting and such.   • Hosting company that does Linux VPS and MS SQL

    I'm looking for hosted solutions but there are so many companies that finding the right one using a Google search is a bit overwhelming. Ideally I would like a hosting company which has following options: -Linux VPSs - Individual VPSs should be fairly cheap since I plan on putting one or two services per VPS i.e web server on one (httpd and ColdFusion), an SVN server on another, etc. -Managed MS SQL databases - My company already has data in MS SQL databases and a lot of ColdFusion code written that has MS SQL specific commands in it. -Individually purchased dedicated IP addresses -Preferably located in the North America region My plan would be to setup one Linux VPS as a gateway/firewall/VPN server and have all of my traffic routed through so that my other servers would not use of bandwidth by talking to each other. The trick is also finding a company that does Linux VPS AND MS SQL databases. Does anybody know of any hosting companies offer what I'm looking for? Let me know if I need to add more details.

Here my company blocks lots of IP's for reasons like entertainment, sports, music, messaging boards etc. General e-mail is also one of those topics and I can't enter gmail.com. The proxy sites are also blocked in the company and the one's I have found (by spending much afford) are not accepting cookies. Also I am not able to enter the gmail from Igoogle too, this is also blocked. How can I enter gmail ? Thanks.

    Trying to find the right router to use - we'd like to go Cisco. We have ~60 programmers that do alot of remote server work. Will grow to 100 programmers by the end of the year. We've talked to companies that sell Cisco routers. While they make recommendations, we feel that the sales guys may be selling us an overkill solution. What kind of company (that is not linked to sales of routers) can provide a service to recommend the right kind of router for our company?   • During interviews, how do I gauge a company's respect for my position?

    I'm a web developer who previously joined a software company not knowing their value and respect went to big data analysis, not their website. Sure, they needed a public-facing website, but I eventually found that the most exciting, valued projects there went to data teams. Realizing this, members of the web team were picked off and switched teams, making it hard for those left behind to keep up the work load, and making us look bad. At times it seemed the company culture sneered at us, wondering, "What does that team even do here?" A friend of mine had the opposite problem at another software company. All he wanted to do was crunch big numbers. However he complained that the rest of the company wouldn't shut up about developing the usability of their website. Meanwhile his analytics team languished. I've also heard of salespeople getting love at a company, while engineering as a whole is undervalued, or vice versa. As for my story, if I could have known the company was like that, I might have avoided the job in the first place. So, before I join a new company, how do I gauge its actual respect for my programming role? For its other roles? I want to avoid companies that aren't serious about my particular focus in programming, or, perhaps bigger picture, companies that don't value everybody who works there. (Note I think gauging the company's attitude toward the basic needs of its programmers is covered by these related questions.)

And here comes the problem - there are many developers who look really great at the interview, seem to know the technology you need and have a good job background, but after two moths of work, you find out that they are not able to work in a team, writing some code takes them very long time, and moreover, the result is not as good as it should be. So, do you use any formalized tests (are there any?)? How do you recognize a good programmer - and a good person? Are there any simple 'good' questions that might reveal the future problems? ...or is it just about your 'feeling' about the person (ie., mainly your experience), and trying him out?     OK, I feel stupid asking this - but in Jeff's article: Getting the Interview Phone Screen Right and originally stated in the 5 essential phone screen questions: They shouldn't stare blankly at you when you ask with 2^16 is. It's a special number. They should know it. I've been a developer\software engineer\code monkey\whatever for a little while now, and I don't think I've ever come across this. I mean, I can certainly count binary values do basic operations on them, etc, etc. But I don't see what is "special" about this value.

As a result, I lack experience from many things, such as the basic homework/test questions many CS graduates take for granted. I recently had a tech screen interview where I fumbled and struggled to finish a (relatively) common question, I believe due to this inexperience.
