SQL SERVER – Replace a Column Name in Multiple Stored Procedure all together

I receive a lot of emails every day. I try to answer each and every email and comments on Facebook and Twitter. I prefer communication on social media as this gives opportunities to others to read the questions and participate along with me. There is always some question which everyone likes to read and remember. Here is one of the questions which I received in email. I believe the same question will be there any many developers who are beginning with SQL Server. I decided to blog about it so everyone can read it and participate. “I am beginner in SQL Server. I have a very interesting situation and need your help. I am beginner to SQL Server and that is why I do not have access to the production server and I work entirely on the development server. The project I am working on is also in the infant stage as well. In product I had to create a multiple tables and every table had few columns. Later on I have written Stored Procedures using those tables. During a code review my manager has requested to change one of the column which I have used in the table. As per him the naming convention was not accurate. Now changing the columname in the table is not a big issue. I figured out that I can do it very quickly either using T-SQL script or SQL Server Management Studio. The real problem is that I have used this column in nearly 50+ stored procedure. This looks like a very mechanical task. I believe I can go and change it in nearly 50+ stored procedure but is there a better solution I can use. Someone suggested that I should just go ahead and find the text in system table and update it there. Is that safe solution? If not, what is your solution. In simple words, How to replace a column name in multiple stored procedure efficiently and quickly? Please help me here with keeping my experience and non-production server in mind.” Well, I found this question very interesting. Honestly I would have preferred if this question was asked on my social media handles (Facebook and Twitter) as I am very active there and quite often before I reach there other experts have already answered this question. Anyway I am now answering the same question on the blog so all of us can participate here and come up with an appropriate answer. Here is my answer - “My Friend, I do not advice to touch system table. Please do not go that route. It can be dangerous and not appropriate. The issue which you faced today is what I used to face in early career as well I still face it often. There are two sets of argument I have observed – there are people who see no value in the name of the object and name objects like obj1, obj2 etc. There are sets of people who carefully chose the name of the object where object name is self-explanatory and almost tells a story. I am not here to take any side in this blog post – so let me go to a quick solution for your problem. Note: Following should not be directly practiced on Production Server. It should be properly tested on development server and once it is validated they should be pushed to your production server with your existing deployment practice. The answer is here assuming you have regular stored procedures and you are working on the Development NON Production Server. Go to Server Note >> Databases >> DatabaseName >> Programmability >> Stored Procedure Now make sure that Object Explorer Details are open (if not open it by clicking F7). You will see the list of all the stored procedures there. Now you will see a list of all the stored procedures on the right side list. Select either all of them or the one which you believe are relevant to your query. Now… Right click on the stored procedures >> SELECT DROP and CREATE to >> Now select New Query Editor Window or Clipboard. Paste the complete script to a new window if you have selected Clipboard option. Now press Control+H which will bring up the Find and Replace Screen. In this screen insert the column to be replaced in the “Find What”box and new column name into “Replace With” box. Now execute the whole script. As we have selected DROP and CREATE to, it will created drop the old procedure and create the new one. Another method would do all the same procedure but instead of DROP and CREATE manually replace the CREATE word with ALTER world. There is a small advantage in doing this is that if due to any reason the error comes up which prevents the new stored procedure to be created you will have your old stored procedure in the system as it is. “ Well, this was my answer to the question which I have received. How to change ownership of a domain name from "missing" web designer

Hi, We had a website produced a few years ago with a .ORG domain name. The site hadn't grown with our needs, so we've now got a new .co.uk site. Our intention was to transfer the .org address to the new site on completion. Our new site is to go live soon, but the original .ORG site has gone offline (hosting expired I believe as the expiry date for the .ORG is in 2012) and we now discover that the .ORG domain name is registered to the web designer and not to anyone in our organisation. The WHOIS information gives us the technical contact as discountasp.net. What are the steps we can take here? Our primary concern is getting the name servers changed (the current .ORG address goes nowhere) and ultimately we need to transfer ownership? The organisation in question is a community, non-profit organisation, so our pockets are not deep. Thanks in advance for any help. Stuart.

A human-friendlier Samba name mangling

Most of our computers run Ubuntu, but two of them dual-boot into Windows, and when we have guests over, they typically also run Windows computers. Thus, in addition to using NFS, our file server (Ubuntu server) also runs Samba. And since we use Ubuntu mostly, we like to take advantage of its advantages over Windows, such as being able to use the characters \:*?"<>| in a file name. The problem, of course, is that Windows doesn't accept those characters in file names, and so Samba has to translate the file name into something more acceptable. The way it does this, however, I find to be obnoxious. The file name Episode 182 - Exorcist 2: The Heretic.mp4 for instance turns into E4Q82R~Y.MP4. This is a terrible "correction". Is there a way to make Samba's mangling a little more friendly to humans? Is possible to "correct" it to something like Episode 182 - Exorcist 2_ The Heretic.mp4 instead, where the illegal characters are simply substituted?

SSIS Denali as part of “Enterprise Information Management”

When watching the SQL PASS session “What’s Coming Next in SSIS?” of Steve Swartz, the Group Program Manager for the SSIS team, an interesting question came up: Why is SSIS thought of to be BI, when we use it so frequently for other sorts of data problems? The answer of Steve was that he breaks the world of data work into three parts: Process of inputs BI Enterprise Information Management All the work you have to do when you have a lot of data to make it useful and clean and get it to the right place. This covers master data management, data quality work, data integration and lineage analysis to keep track of where the data came from. All of these are part of Enterprise Information Management. Next, Steve told Microsoft is developing SSIS as part of a large push in all of these areas in the next release of SQL. So SSIS will be, next to a BI tool, part of Enterprise Information Management in the next release of SQL Server. I'm interested in the different ways people use SSIS, I've basically used it for ETL, data migrations and processing inputs. In which ways did you use SSIS?

Domain Name Expired, Will My Backorder Work?

I'm interested in a domain name that expired August 9, 2012 and backordered it a few months ago. When I check the status of the domain name, it is listed as "autoRenewPeriod". It has a new expiration date of August 9, 2013, but a Google search indicates that "autoRenewPeriod" means the registrar automatically renewed the domain but has not received payment yet. Does anyone have experience with this? How long will it stay in "autoRenewPeriod" before being released by the registrar? Do I have a good chance of grabbing the domain name?

Does your company name in an article title damage Search Engine relevance

I've been wondering about this for a while but never come across a solid answer. Many websites include their name in all the title tags of their articles. This is often apparent in word-press blogs etc. eg: Tsunami hits Japan and leaves thousands homeless | My Website Name The issue I have is that Search engines strip the stop words out of this sentence to leave the words in which it compares to the body text. So if I want my article to rank well and be relevant, in this case about the terrible Tsunami that has recently struck Japan what is to STOP the MY WEBSITE NAME section of the title de-valuing the relevance of the article. Am I over-worrying? Or should I take this in to consideration? Thanks for advice in advance.

Google Places Review - Owner or Business Name?

I currently manage a Google Places Business, where we have received several reviews. I am wanting to respond to these reviews but I want to respond as the company, not as myself. I am the 'owner' of the page, it is through my personal gmail address. Like Facebook, when replying to comments and posts by other users on the business' wall, you reply as the actual business, not as your personal name. Is this the case with Google Places? If not, how can I get it so the reviews are posted as the company name, not my personal name?

In Part 2, I described what connections you need to make for this demo using a Hexbug Spider Robot, a Raspberry Pi, and Java SE Embedded for programming. Here are some photos of me doing the soldering. Software engineers should not be afraid of a little soldering work. It's all good. See: Skynet Big Data Demo (Part 2) One thing to watch out for when you open the remote is that there may be some glue covering the contact points. Make sure to use an Exacto knife or small screwdriver to scrape away any glue or non-conductive material covering each place where you need to solder. And after you are done with your soldering and you gave the solder enough time to cool, make sure all your connections are marked so that you know which wire goes where. Give each wire a very light tug to make sure it is soldered correctly and is making good contact. There are lots of videos on the Web to help you if this is your first time soldering. Meta Refresh for change of page name and content

Hopefully just a quick one. I've got a client that is changing the name of a workshop that they run. This means a change of url, page title for keywords that they have first page ranking on. The keywords are still relevant so what I want to avoid is a 301 redirect to a page that has different keywords to the previous page. Is the best option to keep the old page live with url and title and use a meta refresh to redirect after a period of time (not instant)? That way the SEO ranking is retained for the previous workshop name while they work on the ranking for the name change? Would a 301 redirect have an inverse effect? Thanks!

Should I change the name in the WTFPL?

I'm using the WTFPL in my personal projects published on GitHub. Currently I'm using it verbatim, but I have the suspicion I shouldn't be leaving Copyright (C) 2004 Sam Hocevar <[email protected]> in there, and instead should use my name. But the license is very confusing about this. Half of the WTFPL is about the WTFPL itself, so I thought that copyright might refer to a copyright on the license text itself, and not on the project this is licensing. Also, it says Everyone is permitted to copy and distribute verbatim or modified copies of this license document, and changing it is allowed as long as the name is changed. So would I have to change the name, from WTFPL to, say, "WTFPL-Domenic"?

I have someone i'm making a website for with a domain name and current website hosted at fasthosts. I've built them a website hosted at a different host, unlimitedwebhosting. The website i've made them is in a directory like this. www.mysite.com/dev/0002 So fasthosts: Is the registrar for the domain name, it also has all of the email addresses and their current site. unlimitedwebhosting: Has the new site in a sub directory, like .com/dev/0002 Is it possible to keep the domain name and email addresses all hosted at fasthosts and to have the new website hosted in my unlimitedwebhosting account and to somehow have the domain point to the new website?

XNA: Retrieve texture file name during runtime

I'm trying to retrieve the names of the texture files (or their locations) on a mesh. I realize that the texture file name information is not preserved when the model is loaded. I've been doing tons of searching and some experimenting but I've been met with no luck. I've gathered that I need to extended the content pipeline and store the file location in somewhere like ModelMeshPart.Tag. My problem is, even when I'm trying to make my own custom processor, I still can't figure out where the texture file name is. :( Any thoughts? Thanks! UPDATE: Okay, so I found something kind of promising. NodeContent.Identity.SourceFilename, only that returns the location of my .X model. When I go down the node tree he is always null. Then there's the ContentItem.Name property. It seems to have names of my mesh, but not my actual texture file names. :(

We are doing a big redesign work on our website, and at least 50% of the website folders will be moved to new places with different names (i.e. many URL will be changed). Sure, Google will need some time to index new pages and we expect our SERP positions will be not so good as they are now for some time. We also have an old idea to remove www from our domain name. It seems, it's the right time to do these two works together with publishing the website with updated contents. Or is it better from SEO perspective first publish the new contents, and only after some time, when our SERP positions will return to prior results, tell Google that the domain name without www is our preferred domain name?

Is there a language with native pass-by-reference/pass-by-name semantics, which could be used in mod

Hi! This is a reopened question. I look for a language and supporting platform for it, where the language could have pass-by-reference or pass-by-name semantics by default. I know the history a little, that there were Algol, Fortran and there still is C++ which could make it possible; but, basically, what I look for is something more modern and where the mentioned value pass methodology is preferred and by default (implicitly assumed). I ask this question, because, to my mind, some of the advantages of pass-by-ref/name seem kind of obvious. For example when it is used in a standalone agent, where copyiong of values is not necessary (to some extent) and performance wouldn't be downgraded much in that case. So, I could employ it in e.g. rich client app or some game-style or standalone service-kind application. The main advantage to me is the clear separation between identity of a symbol, and its current value. I mean when there is no reduntant copying, you know that you're working with the exact symbol/path you have queried/received. And intristing boxing of values will not interfere with the actual logic of program. I know that there is C# ref keyword, but it's something not so intristic, though acceptable. Equally, I realize that pass-by-reference semantics could be simulated in virtually any language (Java as an instant example) and so on.. not sure about pass by name :) What would you recommend - create a something like DSL for such needs wherever it be appropriate; or use some languages that I already know? Maybe, there is something that I'm missing? Thank you!
