  • Are my Linux symbolic links acting correctly?

    Hi all I've been using Linux on and off for the last 15 years and today I came across something in bash that surprised me. Setup the following directory structure: $ cd /tmp $ mkdir /tmp/symlinktest $ mkdir /tmp/symlinktest/dir $ mkdir /tmp/symlinktarget Now create two sym links in symlinktest pointing to symlinktarget: $ cd /tmp/symlinktest $ ln -s ../symlinktarget Asym $ ln -s ../symlinktarget Bsym Now, in bash, the following tab completion does strange things. Type the following: $ cd dir $ cd ../A[TAB] Pressing the tab key above completes the line to: $ cd ../Asym/ as I expected. Now press enter to change into Asym and type: $ cd ../B[TAB] This time pressing the tab key completes the link to: $ cd ../Bsym[space] Note that there is now a space after the Bsym and there is no trailing slash. My question is, why when changing from the physical directory "dir" to Asym it recognises that Asym is a link to a directory, but when changing from one sym link to another, it doesn't recognise that it's a link to a directory? In addition, if I try to create a new file within Asym, I get an error message: $ cd /tmp/symlinktest/Asym $ cat hello > ../Bsym/file.txt -bash: ../Bsym/file.txt: No such file or directory I always thought that symlinks were mostly transparent except to programs that need to manipulate them.   • Auto load a specific link at various time intervals

    Here's what I need to do. I'm using Google Chrome. I have page that auto-reloads every 5 seconds using a script: javascript: timeout=prompt("Set timeout [s]"); current=location.href; if(timeout>0) setTimeout('reload()',1000*timeout); else location.replace(current); function reload() { setTimeout('reload()',1000*timeout); fr4me='<frameset cols=\'*\'>\n<frame src=\''+current+'\'/>'; fr4me+='</frameset>'; with(document){write(fr4me);void(close())}; } I found that script by Googling. The reason why the page auto-reloads every 5 seconds is I'm waiting for a specific link or url to appear in the page. It appears at random times. Once I see the link I'm waiting for, I immediately click the link. That's fine. But I want more. What I want is the page will auto-reload and I want it to auto-detect the the link I'm waiting for. Once the script finds the link I'm waiting for, it automatically loads that link on a new tab or page. For example, I'm auto-reloading www.example.com. I'm waiting for a specific url "BUY NOW". When the page auto-reloads, it checks if there's a url "BUY NOW". If it sees one, it should automatically open that link. Thanks.

  • Clicking a link in IE6 doesn't load page (internal DNS entry on our intranet)

    I have a very strange problem that is only affecting some versions of IE6. The problem does affect IE 6.0.2900.5512, but does not seem to affect 6.0.3790.3959 Basically I work for a company and we have an intranet. While I'm not an expert on "internal DNS pointers", what I was able to do was create a website (let's say about football), and when an employee who is sitting behind the company firewall types the word "football" in to the web address bar of their web browser, they get redirected to a particular server. I am told this is some kind "internally pointing DNS entry". So, I've set one of these up, and I have a placed a link to it on our company intranet page. However, when the link is clicked in IE6.0.2900.5512, the page goes blank. Clicking "refresh" then loads the correct page (the one specified in the link). Can anyone help me out here. I have tried changing the way URL is formed, everything from //football to http://football/ etc. The link works fine in every other browser and IE7+, but unfoturnatly, IE6 is still the most common browser in use at my organisation.

  • Exit link tracking with timestamped logs on 3rd party content

    I want to track clicks on exit links, that are placed in 3rd party content, for example on Twitter. I also need the timestamps of the clicks. Google Analytics can't be embedded in 3rd party content. Another solution is to use a URL shortener like bit.ly. However, bit.ly or goo.gl don't log the time of the click with any better granularity than a full day. su.pr shows the time for the past day in its analytics graph. The analytics download only includes the day, not the time. cli.gs was touted as having the most detailed analytics, yet it doesn't show the time either, and forces the user through a preview page. Any ideas?

  • Unsatisfied Link Error and missing .so files when starting Eclipse

    I upgraded to the 12.04 beta yesterday. Now, when I try to start Eclipse, I get the splash screen and then this error message: An error has occurred. See the log file /home/gabriel/.eclipse/org.eclipse.platform_3.7.0_155965261/configuration/1335382319394.log . The log file says something like this: java.lang.UnsatisfiedLinkError: Could not load SWT library. Reasons: no swt-gtk-3740 in java.library.path no swt-gtk in java.library.path Can't load library: /home/gabriel/.swt/lib/linux/x86_64/libswt-gtk-3740.so Can't load library: /home/gabriel/.swt/lib/linux/x86_64/libswt-gtk.so followed by many more error messages. The /home/gabriel/.swt/lib/linux/x86_64/ directory exists, but is empty. I also tried reinstalling eclipse with no success. Any ideas?
