• Launching mysql server: same permissions for root and for user

  Hi folks, have been directed here from stackoverflow here, am reposting the question and adding my.cnf at the end of a post. so far in my 10+ years experience with linux, all the permission problems I've ever encountered, have been successfully solved with chmod -R 777 /path/where/the/problem/has/occured (every lie has a grain of truth in it :) This time the trick doesn't work, so I'm turning to you for help. I'm compiling mysql server from scratch with zc.buildout (www . buildout . org). I do launch it by executing /home/toinbis/.../parts/mysql/bin/mysqld_safe, this works. The thing is that i'll be launching this from within supervisor (supervisord . org) script, and when used on the deployment server, it'll need it to be launched with root permissions(so that nginx server, launched with the same script, would have access to 80 port). The problem is that sudo /home/toinbis/.../parts/mysql/bin/mysqld_safe, fails, generating the error, posted bellow, in mysql error log (apache and nginx works as expected). http://lists.mysql.com/mysql/216045 suggests, that "there are two errors: A missing table and a file system that mysqld doesn't have access to". Mysqldatadir and all the mysql server binary files has 777 permissions, talbe mysql.plugin does exist and has 777 permissions (why Can't open the mysql.plugin table?), "sudo touch mysql_datadir/tmp/file" does create file (why Can't create/write to file /home/toinbis/.../runtime/mysql_datadir/tmp/ib4e9Huz?). chgrp -R mysql mysql_datadir and adding "root, toinbis, mysql" users to mysql group ( cat /etc/group | grep mysql outputs mysql:x:124:root,toinbis,mysql) has no effect - when i launch it as a casual user, it starts, when as a root - it fails. Does mysql server, even started as root, tries to operate as other, let's say, 'mysql' user? but even in that case, adding mysql user to mysql group and making all the mysql_datadirs files belong to mysql group should make things work smoothly. • What database is easy to maintain and manage in a cluster?

  I'm looking for a database (DBMS) that is easy to scale out. I would like to have high availability so I need a multi-master cluster, where the data is replicated to two or more physical computers. I would also like to be able to start with one node (no replication), and then scale out to more nodes as needed without a reinstallation or downtime. I would like to have a DBMS that are easy to maintain and manage. It should be easy to add nodes, remove nodes, take live backup and monitor the use of resources. It doesn't have to be a relational database system, so a NoSQL is okey. And I would like to have a free version so I can test it in small scale and compare it with alternatives. What alternatives do I have?

• Deploying new code live

  What's the best practise to deploy new code on a live (e-commerce) site? For now I have stopped apache for +/- 10 seconds when renaming directory public_html_new to public_html and old to public_html_old. This creates a short down-time, before I start Apache again. The same question goes if using Git to pull the new repo to the live directory. Can I pull the repo while the site is active? And how about if I need to copy a DB as well? During the tar (backup purpose) compression of the live site I noticed that changes occurred in the media directory. That indicated to me that files keep on changing periodically. And if these changes can interfere if Apache is not stopped during deployment.

• Why the huge difference between etch and lenny MySQL

  I've been working on a program for the last year. The development environment is working with a database in MySQL running on debian etch version mysql Ver 14.12 Distrib 5.0.32, for pc-linux-gnu (i486) using readline 5.2. The production environment is working on debian lenny with version mysql Ver 14.12 Distrib 5.0.51a, for debian-linux-gnu (i486) using readline 5.2. I was just timing some database access and what takes in the development environment 150 seconds, takes 300 in the production environment. I checked the /etc/mysql/my.cnf files on both systems and the only differences are # development bind-address = 10.168.1.82 log_bin = /var/log/mysql/mysql-bin.log # production bind-address = 127.0.0.1 myisam-recover = BACKUP #log_bin = /var/log/mysql/mysql-bin.log I dump a database from the production and load it into the development and with the same server everything takes half the time !!! What should I check?

• Acer Aspire 3680 Wireless Signal Problem

  I am using Acer Aspire 3680. I recently reinstalled Windows Vista, and the wireless did not work by default. I installed the "Atheros Wireless LAN Driver" on this site: http://support.acer-euro.com/drivers/notebook/as_3680.html The result, the wireless APs are successfully scanned. However, when I tried to join a network, even with 5/5 signal, an error message showed up diagnosing signal too little. I restarted as Ubuntu, and wireless worked perfectly, with same computer position. Even more confusing, When I moved to the kitchen (2 meters close to the router), the wireless connected, when I move back to my room, wireless failed on Vista and worked on Ubuntu. It is clearly the driver problem. Acer laptops seems come with pre-installed drivers, but after re-installation, they are all gone. (I can't find the original Acer backup disc) Please do not answer "move closer to the AP" and something related to "interference", as wireless worked with Ubuntu's default driver.

  I am using Java Runtime to run commands, including certain CVS commands. I use: process = runtime.exec ("cmd /C cvs..."); format for running the Process in Java I need to have the option of stopping it. For this I use the Java Process destroy method process.destroy(); However only the cmd is stopped not the cvs process. It continues to run as a separate process without the cmd process as the parent. There are many references to this on the internet, but I haven't found any satisfactory solution. Thanks

  Just would like some feedback on the best ftp program (not free). The requirements I'm looking for is: - secure ftp - for use on mac, linux, windows - backup utility with scheduler - for use on more than one computer (multi-license) I'm using wsftp from 2007 right now but it's only good for windows. It's license is only good for one computer. And after some vista updates it's making some strange noises. I tried to turn off the noise (via control panel) and it's still making that noise and I turned off the sound within wsftp too. I like the program but I think it's time to look for a new one. • Can you use a USB dongle inside a VMWare ESX Virual Machine?

  Howdy, I need to know if a USB dongle that is required as a license key for a piece of software will accessible from the physical host machine. This will be a small vSphere 4 installation targeting the quick backup and system restore capabilities of VMWare, not specifically HA, so I am not to worried about the virtual machine automatically failing over to another physical machine and the dongle not being accessible. • Does throwing an exception in an EvalFunc pig UDF skip just that line, or stop completely?

  I have a User Defined Function (UDF) written in Java to parse lines in a log file and return information back to pig, so it can do all the processing. It looks something like this: public abstract class Foo extends EvalFunc<Tuple> { public Foo() { super(); } public Tuple exec(Tuple input) throws IOException { try { // do stuff with input } catch (Exception e) { throw WrappedIOException.wrap("Error with line", e); } } } My question is: if it throws the IOException, will it stop completely, or will it return results for the rest of the lines that don't throw an exception? Example: I run this in pig REGISTER myjar.jar DEFINE Extractor com.namespace.Extractor(); logs = LOAD '$IN' USING TextLoader AS (line: chararray); events = FOREACH logs GENERATE FLATTEN(Extractor(line)); With this input: 1.5 7 "Valid Line" 1.3 gghyhtt Inv"alid line"" I throw an exceptioN!! 1.8 10 "Valid Line 2" Will it process the two lines and will 'logs' have 2 tuples, or will it just die in a fire?

• VSS error 12293 after system disk clone (Win2003)

  Hi! After cloning a windows 2003 installation from a single drive onto two mirrored drives using Acronis Disk Director, VSS no longer works, filing events 12293 and 7001 when trying to use backup tools, and additionally giving error 0x8004230f when accessing the Shadow copy tab of disk properties. I've google-researched this quite throughly, and found a suggested fix[1]: replacing the MBR signature of the disk. This would cause windows to invalidate old shadow copy information, which supposedly would make it all work again. However, I am a bit nervous over this... Is there a possiblity of messing this up somehow, because of the mbr originating from a single disk install, and now residing on a raid mirror? Has anyone here had this problem and solved it? • ReadyNAS running slow

  We have a NetGear ReadyNAS NV+ that we are using just for filestorage. While it appears to be running normally as a fileserver, the admin functions run incredibly slow. Sometimes, backups take so long that they don't finish before the next run is due to start, and if I try to look at the backup logs or download the system logs, all I get is the busy "whirling wheel", until I get a "System is busy message". Is this just the system being bolshy, or is it a sign of problems to come, and what can I do to diagnose them?

• Windows Security Center Service is missing

  I am trying to fix a Windows 7 machine here that has been infected with all kinds of Malware. I have removed all of them as far as I can see but I am stumped by one last task. One little bugger managed to remove the Windows Security Center service from the list of Windows services. So I cannot start it or set to automatically start. At the moment I cannot get the Windows firewall to turn on or any anti-virus software. The security center shows the following image when I try: Does anyone know how to add this back to the list of services so I may set it to start. • Purging old Exchange email/content on SBS2003

  We have a Windows SBS 2003 server that used to manage email, calendaring and such like for a small organisation via Exchange. We successfully migrated everything to Google Apps for Business about 18 months ago. The server only provides local network services now. We have backed up and virtualized this machine and would now like to purge any residual mail to save disk space and speed up backup etc. The disk space is such that I believe the Exchange mail is still on there somewhere. I've stumbled through System Manager and poked about but cannot confirm whether this is the case. Where would this live and how might I go about it? (Disclaimer: I'm not a Windows admin, Linux is my thing...)

• Remote File Copy - Win Server 2008

  I'd like to copy backup archives from a remote server to my client machine. In the past, I've installed an FTP server on the remote machine and directed local server backups to dump into that directory. I'd then FTP in from my client machine. Just wondering if there is a simpler way to do this using Win 7 (Client) Win Server 2008? Robocopy? RDC command line options? For example, I can easily remote desktop in and drag the files from the server to my local machine. If there is an easy command line way to do this, then I don't have to setup an FTP server which is ideal. Thanks.

Running my own SMTP server with domain keys, SPF and DNSBL Etc., etc. What would be the appropriate section to mention this? Should I even mention it? Perhaps it's best to just bring it up during the interview. I would especially appreciate the opinion of hiring managers.

  Hello, I have a stored proc in SQL Server 2005, which looks like the following (simplified) CREATE PROCEDURE FOO @PARAMS AS BEGIN -- STEP 1: POPULATE tmp_table DECLARE @tmp_table TABLE (...) INSERT INTO @tmp_table SELECT * FROM BAR -- STEP 2: USE @tmp_table FOR FINAL SELECT SELECT abc, pqr FROM BAZ JOIN @tmp_table ON some_criteria END When I run this proc from SQL Server Management Studio, things work fine. However, when I call the same proc from a Java program, using something like: cs = connection.prepareCall("exec proc ?,"); cs.setParam(...); rs = cs.getResultSet(); // BOOM - Null! while(rs.next()) {...} // NPE! I fail to understand why the first result set returned is NULL. Can someone explain this to me? As a workaround, if I check cs.getMoreResults() and if true, try another getResultSet() - THIS time it returns the proper result set. Any pointers please? Other than getting 2 different DSL lines, how can I be absolutely sure that the PC side doesn't get hacked? What if I want to use MS Home server as a backup device for both sides? • How to install compiler and binutils on FreeNAS?

  I'd like to run a backup tool, duplicity, that apparently requires a cc compiler and binutils. I'm able to locate and install the required BSD packages for python, gcc, and dependencies from ftp2.freebsd.org. However, I can't find binutils. How are binutils installed on a system like FreeNAS? I'm working with FreeNAS 0.70 (based on FreeBSD 7.2). I see several packages with binutils in the name, but it's not clear any of them are for my i386 platform. e.g. I see i386-rtems-binutils-2.19.1, but I can't find any info that suggests this is correct for my platform. Google results mention it's for realtime systems.

• On a Mac, how are connections (possibly by spyware) made to outside internet addresses during initia

  I am trying to secure a Mac after discovering that network links are being established to some unwanted internet sites. Using 'lsof -i' (list open 'files', internet) I have seen that launchd, ntpd, firefox, dropbox and other processes are either 'LISTENING' or have 'ESTABLISHED' links to a site or sites which I suspect have to do with spyware. I have been trying to find startup files and preference lists that initiate thise links but can't find them. I could easily reinstall the OS and restore data from a backup but I'd prefer to know how to fix this as I have six Macs to look after. Thanks...

• SQL Alter database failed - being used by checkpoint process

  Hi, On my SQL server 2008, i have a SQL agent job to restore a database on nightly basis. Procedure: find latest backup on other server Kill all conenction to the destination database Restore destination database with replace, recovery It failed last weekend because the database was being used by a system process (spid 11 checkpoint). since I couldnt kill the system process, I fixed this by restarting sql server. It failed this weekend as well with same error (checkpint process in this database as from sp_who) and when I run: SELECT session_id,request_id,command,status,start_time FROM sys.dm_exec_requests WHERE session_id = 11 It shows: 11 0 CHECKPOINT background 2010-04-06 10:17:49.103 I cant restart the server every time it fails. • Linux server remounted to read-only

  I have tried to find anwser on SF, but no luck. Nothing worked. (and I have just basic knowledge of linux systems - I'm more developer) Hour ago I noticed that database is not reacting anymore. From some reason system went to readonly mode. Complete server is now, ofc, unavailable. Server is VPS in Dutch company, and have no idea what I can do with it now to unlock it. Every suggestion would be more then appriciated. I tried to save as much of database as possible but there are 20G of images, that would be hard to backup, but I can do that also, if that is something that is smart to do.

  Hey I have run into the following problem when attempting to build a program in java which executes commands on a remote linux server and returns the output for processing... Basically I have installed Cygwin with an SSH client and want to do the following: Open Cygwin, Send command "user@ip"; Return output; Send command "password"; Return output; Send multiple other commands, Return output; ...etc... So far: Process proc = Runtime.getRuntime().exec("C:/Power Apps/Cygwin/Cygwin.bat"); Works nicely except I am at a loss as to how to attempt the next steps. Any help?
