I want to make it so that no one can log onto the domain with these accounts, but they need to have active exchange mailboxes since this is what I am testing. I put all the test users in the same group. Can I set a security policy that will do this?

• No Audio from Windows XP after formatting.

  Hello folks, I have reinstalled in my Windows XP machine. After it is re-isntalled the audio in my machine has failed. I have installed all the device drivers in my mother board. The Realtek Sound driver is also installed. Note: Sound is working when I test the surround settings test in my RealTek program, but unable to play any audio, tried playing both in my local machine and from the internet. • Does gunzip work in memory or does it write to disk?

  We have our log files gzipped to save space. Normally we keep them compressed and just do gunzip -c file.gz | grep 'test' to find important information but we're wondering if it's quicker to keep the files uncompressed and then do the grep. cat file | grep 'test' There has been some discussions about how gzip works if it would make sense that if it reads it into memory and unzips then the first one would be faster but if it doesn't then the second one would be faster. Does anyone know how gzip uncompresses data?

• Suspected network performance issue on VirtualBox Ubuntu guest on Win7 host

  I set up Ubuntu 12.04 in VirtualBox on the Win7 machine I was allocated on my new project. I am running Java, Eclipse, Tomcat to develop a large data-intensive application and I noticed that this application runs at half the speed of my colleague's identical machine, where he runs it all under Windows. I think I have narrowed down the performance issue to the network, after comparing and equalising all the Java VM settings with my colleague. Is there a ping test I can do or some other network diagnostic test to flag up any problems? To give some background, the network performance is confusing. Running a network speed test to my colleague's machine with iperf shows speeds of 6 Mb/s from my Ubuntu guest, and 90 Mb/s from the win7 host. Large downloads, e.g. the Java SDK, come down at about 1.2 MB/s on both the guest and the host. Pings are sub-1ms on the host, but 1.5ms on the guest. I also did a broadband speed test, and got 10Mb/s download speed on both, but the host has an upload speed of 10Mb/s but the guest only uploads at 3Mb/s. I've been trying to diagnose any MTU problems with ping -M do to identify any kind of packet fragmentation problem but it's progressing very slow because I don't have much experience in this area. From what I read on other people's networking issues with VB and Linux guests on Win7 hosts, I should be able to get the speed on the guest up to the same level as the host. I installed a fresh VM with Ubuntu again to see if I'd foobar'd it somehow, but I'm getting the same readings with iperf on the virgin installation.   Problem Trying to setup CI Joe (https://github.com/defunkt/cijoe) and I get the following error: /usr/bin/env: ruby1.8: No such file or directory What I'm doing CI Joe is run as www-data, and the command I'm running is RAILS_ENV=test bundle exec rake -s test When I log in as www-data (sudo su www-data) and execute the same command it works. So I'm trying to figure out what may be wrong. • Windows 64bit Sandboxing software alternatives

  As you might know sandboxing software doesn't work in 64bit Windows due to patchguard. What are the alternatives for a person looking to test untrusted / temporary software? Edit: @Nick I'd prefer an alternative to VMs as I'm not happy with the extended startup time, the extra login sequences and the memory overhead that accompanies booting a VM solution to test something out ocassionally as a home user. Also it's another system that needs to be kept secure and up to date.

  XP is my host. Ubuntu is my Guest in VMware. When I do the following commands, I should get SMTP respones but now get no response. I use wireshark to analayze it. • Configure bash_profile for one single terminal emulator

  I'm using a new terminal emulator. Terminology is the E17 default terminal, and it have a great command, $ tyls with is a "graphical" $ ls I want to create an alias just for this terminal, because the command "tyls" don't make sense to konsole, rxvt or other terminals. I'm thinking in some kind of "if" in ~/.bash_profile to test if I'm on terminology and then run the following command: alias ls="tyls" But how can I test if I'm in terminology but not xterm? So I can type something like ssh test ssh ci ssh dev Instead of having to type ssh test.mydomain.com ssh ci.mydomain.com ssh dev.mydomain.com Right now I have separate entries for each one, but we have dozens of machines, so I'd rather have a default rather than have to duplicate everything so many times.

  Our network of Windows 2003 and Windows 2008 servers suddenly hasDNS issues. There are 7 DCs. Two at our main office and one each at branch sites (one branch has two a 2008R2 and WIN2K3) Only two are WIN2008R2 Running DCDIAG on the WIN2K3 at main site (DC1) reports no issues. Running at any branch site reports two issues All other test pass. The server DC1 can be PINGed by name from any site Starting test: frsevent There are warning or error events within the last 24 hours after the SYSVOL has been shared. Failing SYSVOL replication problems may cause Group Policy problems. Starting test: FsmoCheck Warning: DcGetDcName(PDC_REQUIRED) call failed, error 1355 A Primary Domain Controller could not be located. The server holding the PDC role is down. Netdom.exe /query DC reports the expected servers. netdom query fsmo This reports the server at the main office holds the following roles: * Schema owner Domain role owner PDC role RID pool manager Infrastructure owner In the DNS management snap-in, DC1 appears as DNS server but does not appear in _msdcs-dc-_sites-Default-First-Site-Name-_TCP There is no _ldap or –kerberos record pointing to DC1 Same issue msdcs-dc-_sites- -_TCP Again there is no _ldap or –kerberos record pointing to DC1 Under Domain DNS Zones there is no entry for the server. This is the case for any _tcp folder in the DNS. The server DC1 appears correctly as a name server in the Reverse Lookup Zone. There is a Host(A) record for DC1 but in the Forward Lookup Zone there is no (same as parent folder) Host(A) for the DC1 server but such an entry exists for the other DCs at branch sites and the other DC at the main office. We have tried stopping and starting the netlogon service, restarting DNS and also dcdiag /fix. Netdiag reports error: Trust relationship test. . . . . . : Failed [FATAL] Secure channel to domain 'XXX' is broken. [ERROR_NO_LOGON_SERVERS] [WARNING] Failed to query SPN registration on DC- One entry for each branch DC All braches lsit the problem server and it can be Pinged by name from any branch Fixing is number one priority but also would like to determine the casue.

• Hard Drive Bad Sector marking utility

  I already have Windows XP, During installing Ubuntu(dual boot) the disk drive just stuck up at one place and doesn't seem to move ahead.. Is there a disk bad sector mark utility that just marks these sectors so that the disk doesn't seek them later. I tried running Seagate Seatools on the drive but both the short test and long test fail even before they start even chkdsk /f/r doesn't seem to work as the system locks up at stage four.

  I have the following backup batch file: xcopy C:\test.txt \server\Data\user\"data test" /e /y /i The issue is why does it not only copy the file listed but proceeds to copy the whole root directory? When i remove the switches it only copies the file. There is nothing in the description of those switches that seems to cause the behavior...   I'm trying to configure my Debian (6.0) server to forward emails sent to root to a mailing-list. I set the ML address in /etc/aliases this way: root: [email protected] I then called newaliases. It doesn't work but when I call mail from the command line it works :/ echo "test" | mail -s"test message" [email protected] If I set my own email address in /etc/aliases it's working too.
