• JavaScript: using constructor without operator 'new'

  Please help me to understand why the following code works: <script> var re = RegExp('\\ba\\b') ; alert(re.test('a')) ; alert(re.test('ab')) ; </script> In the first line there is no new operator. As far as I know, a contructor in JavaScript is a function that initialize objects created by the operator new and they are not meant to return anything.

  I've got a model like this: Stem -id -etc And then I have Stemrelation -stem_id -related_stem_id -active I can get the related stems with the following relations class Stem < ActiveRecord::Base has_many :stemrelations has_many :related_stems, :through => :stemrelations end class Stemrelation < ActiveRecord::Base belongs_to :stem belongs_to :related_stem, :class_name => "Stem", :foreign_key => "related_stem_id" end But now I'd only like to get the active relations. I tried adding this to the Stem model: has_many :active_related, :through => :stemrelations, :source => :related_stem, :conditions => {:active => true} but this gives me an error becasue it tries to check the active flag on the stem model instead of the stemrelation. What do I change here? Thanks!

• Connect two UIScrollView's together

  Here's a tricky iPhone problem I've been working on. I have three UIScrollViews on a page, one that only scrolls horizontally, one that only scrolls vertically, and one that scrolls both horizontally and vertically. I want to lock the views together, so that the horizontal location of the horizontal only scrollview matches the horizontal location of the main scrollview, and the vertical scrollview likewise, so that dragging the main scrollview around controls the horizontal and vertical scrollviews. Problem is, I'm completely stumped. I've looked around inside the apple documentation, but there doesn't seem to be any way to do this officially. One thought that I had was to somehow "clone" any touch on any of the scrollviews to a point on the other two, but I have no idea how to do this. If anyone has any thoughts on this, I'd very much appreciate it.

  I'm using Disqus comments on my site. Users can comment on blog posts or on podcasts. So I have a page that lists all the blog-posts and one listing all of my podcasts. I'm using the combo-widget to display the most recent comments on each of these two pages. But I only want recent blog-post comments to show up in the list on the blog index page and likewise for podcasts. At the moment, the combo-widget lists all the comments, regardless of whether or not they were left on a blog post or a podcast... Is Disqus even built to be used in this way? [Site built with rails and I'm using norman's disqus plugin, although I doubt it matters...]

  This is most likely one for all you sexy DBAs out there: How would I effieciently model a relational database whereby I have a field in an "Event" table which defines a "SportType"? This "SportsType" field can hold a link to different sports tables E.g. "FootballEvent", "RubgyEvent", "CricketEvent" and "F1 Event". Each of these Sports tables have different fields specific to that sport. My goal is to be able to genericly add sports types in the future as required, yet hold sport specific event data (fields) as part of my Event Entity. Is it possible to use an ORM such as NHibernate / Entity framework / DataObjects.NET which would reflect such a relationship?   Hi, I have a 2D array, call it 'A'. I have two other 2D arrays, call them 'ix' and 'iy'. I would like to create an output array whose elements are the elements of A at the index pairs provided by x_idx and y_idx. I can do this with a loop as follows: for i=1:nx for j=1:ny output(i,j) = A(ix(i,j),iy(i,j)); end end How can I do this without the loop? If I do output = A(ix,iy), I get the value of A over the whole range of (ix)X(iy). Thank you, Jason

  I need the very last valid entry in a database table which would be the row with the greatest primary key. So using mysqli, my query is "SELECT MAX(id) FROM table LIMIT 1". This query returns the correct number(using print_r()) but I cannot figure out how to access it. Here is the main code.   I'm trying out mock/responsibility driven design. I seem to have problems to avoid returning mocks from mocks in the case of finder objects. An example could be an object that checks whether the bills from last month are paid. It needs a service that retrieves a list of bills for that. So I need to mock that service that retrieves the bills. At the same time I need that mock to return mocked Bills (since I don't want my test to rely on the correctness bill implementation). Is my design flawed? Is there a better way to test this? Or is this the way it will need to be when using finder objects (the finding of the bills in this case)?

  I'm currently testing GAs new async code snippet using two different tracking codes on the same page; _gaq.push( ['_setAccount', 'UA-XXXXXXXX-1'], ['_trackPageview'], ['b._setAccount', 'UA-XXXXXXXX-2'], ['b._trackPageview'] ); Although both codes work, I've noticed that they present inconsistent results. Now, we aren't talking huge differences here, only 1 or 2 visits / day every now and then. However, this site is tiny and 1 or 2 visits equates to a 15% difference in figures. Now, the final site has much more traffic, but my concerns are; will this inconsistancy scale with traffic? assuming not, is a slight variation in recorded stats an accepted norm?

  I have written a program in C# which connects to a POP Server and retrieves raw email message strings from the server using POP3 command RETR. Since the email message being retrieved by the program is in plain text format with all the headers and message body with in the same, its too difficult to extract each header and mail body from the raw string.   I simply create a movie clip, put it on the stage and give it an instance name of char. • Two UITabBarControllers and Autorotation

  I have two UITabBarControllers in my mainwnidow.nib wired to my appdelegate. In my app delegate, I can load either one: - (BOOL)application:(UIApplication *)application didFinishLaunchingWithOptions:(NSDictionary *)launchOptions { //either [window addSubview:tabBarController.view]; //or [window addSubview:tabBar2Controller.view]; [window makeKeyAndVisible]; } and autorotation works. If I add both (with the expectation to swap between them later): [window addSubview:tabBarController.view]; [window addSubview:tabBar2Controller.view]; then autorotation stops working...everything is always portrait. • Custom QGraphicsItems not compiling and give object is is private error

  Hi, I am trying to create a Custom QGraphicsItem button as shown by Fred here. The code which he posted can be found here. The problem is when I try and compile the code I get the following two errors: /usr/include/qt4/QtGui/qgraphicsitem.h ‘QGraphicsItem::QGraphicsItem(const QGraphicsItem&)’ is private /usr/include/qt4/QtCore/qobject.h ‘QObject::QObject(const QObject&)’ is private Here is the code snippet which essentially is the same as that in the sample above. The error is on the class deceleration. class MyButton : public QObject, public QGraphicsItem { Q_OBJECT Q_INTERFACES(QGraphicsItem) public: MyButton(QGraphicsItem *parent = 0); MyButton(const QString normal, const QString pressed = "", QGraphicsItem *parent = 0); .... } Interestingly the other sample as shown here works fine.
