  • Alternative way to notify the user of an error

    - by Lily
I have a winform software that communicates with hardware through a protocol. Sometimes error in communication happens and i would like to notify the user. Errors could be for example: timeouts, crc errors, physical disconnection etc... I have a communication window in which i show these errors, but by default this is hidden. The user can open it though the menubar. Popups are annoying to the user (and to myself) so i would like a un-invasive way to notify the user that an error has occurred. Perhaps a info bubble like when XP tells you updates are ready for your computer? I know that NotifyIcon can help put things in the system tray, which i do not wish to have. I'd rather keep it within my MDI. I'm open to other creative ideas as well.

  • Set MdiParent to null (Nothing) in FormClosed

    - by serhio
In my project I observed that in a FormClosed method (that handles FormClosed event) is set MdiParent = Nothing (null). This code makes (? no idea why) that OnLoad(method) on some child panels is raised. Is there any sense to set MdiParent to null (Nothing) in FormClosed?

  • Why doesn't Win Forms application update label immediately?

    - by rosscj2533
I am doing some experimenting with threads, and made a 'control' method to compare against where all the processing happens in the UI thread. It should run a method, which will update a label at the end. This method runs four times, but the labels are not updated until all 4 have completed. I expected one label to get updated about every 2 seconds. Here's the code: private void button1_Click(object sender, EventArgs e) { Stopwatch watch = new Stopwatch(); watch.Start(); UIThreadMethod(lblOne); UIThreadMethod(lblTwo); UIThreadMethod(lblThree); UIThreadMethod(lblFour); watch.Stop(); lblTotal.Text = "Total Time (ms): " + watch.ElapsedMilliseconds.ToString(); } private void UIThreadMethod(Label label) { Stopwatch watch = new Stopwatch(); watch.Start(); for (int i = 0; i < 10; i++) { Thread.Sleep(200); } watch.Stop(); // this doesn't set text right away label.Text = "Done, Time taken (ms): " + watch.ElapsedMilliseconds; } Maybe I'm just missing something basic, but I'm stuck. Any ideas? Thanks.

  • How to catch key press on a form c# .net

    - by flavour404
Hi, I have a parent form that contains a lot of controls. What I am trying to do is filter all of the key presses for that form. The trouble is that if the focus is on one of the controls on the form then the parent form is not getting the key press event, so how do I capture the key down event? Thanks, R.

  • What is a way to access .accdb files for reading and writing?

    - by JPJedi
I have an Microsoft Access Database (.accdb) that stores information needed in an application. Is there a way to distribute my application with the access database without having the user have access installed or get the user to go and download and install the office runtime? The windows form application that uses the access database is developed in VB.net in Visual Studio 2008.

  • Is prefixing Windows Forms control names with their type OK?

    - by name
I have seen many responses that say that prefixing variables with their type is bad, since C# is statically typed and we have Intellisense, but I find that prefixing the names of the controls is useful because I don't need to remember the name of the controls or switch to the designer frequently. For example: btnLoad // Button tbFilePath // TextBox tvFileSystem // TreeView Is this considered bad? If it is, what's the alternative?

  • Function to register functions to be called if event invoked.

    - by zaidwaqi
Hi, I have a Panel which contains 20 PictureBox controls. If a user clicks on any of the controls, I want a method within the Panel to be called. How do I do this? public class MyPanel : Panel { public MyPanel() { for(int i = 0; i < 20; i++) { Controls.Add(new PictureBox()); } } // DOESN'T WORK. // function to register functions to be called if the pictureboxes are clicked. public void RegisterFunction( <function pointer> func ) { foreach ( Control c in Controls ) { c.Click += new EventHandler( func ); } } } How do I implement RegisterFunction()? Also, if there are cool C# features that can make the code more elegant, please share. Thanks.

  • Using anchor property with dynamically added controls

    - by tcube
I'm adding some textboxes to a form dynamically at runtime. Everything works fine i.e. the textboxes are aligned, anchored and automatically resizes until the form is maximized. On maximizing the form, the textboxes are added to the same location while the form was not maximized. This causes a misalignment of the textboxes. How can I ensure that all the textboxes are at the same location and of the same size both while the windowstate is normal as well as maximized? EDIT: Btw I'm using C# EDIT: Would a flowlayoutpanel be useful here?

  • Displaying Data on the Windows Form

    - by The.Anti.9
I'm searching files and returning lines that include the search text, and I'm not really sure the best way to display the information I get. Every time I get a match, I want to show, in some sort of control, the File it came from, and the whole text line. (aka streamreader.ReadLine() result). First I tried just putting it all in a read-only text box, but it doesn't have a scroll bar. What is the best form control to help me display this data neatly?

  • Make the text of a disabled textbox easier to see

    - by Vaccano
I have a text box that when it is disabled the text in it is gray and kind of dithered. (This is the standard functionality.) Is there a way to make this easier to see? I have tried this: txtBoxNumber.Enabled = false; txtBoxNumber.ForeColor = Color.Black; and that has no effect. NOTE: This is a .net Compact Framework app, but I am not tagging the question with CF because I think it is the same for normal .net.

  • selected area to cut an image

    - by Oskar Marciniak
    Hi I would do the selected area to cut an image on picturebox control. I have the following code: using System; using System.Drawing; using System.Windows.Forms; namespace WindowsFormsApplication1 { public partial class Form1 : Form { private Rectangle rect; private Pen p; public Form1() { InitializeComponent(); } private void pictureBox1_Paint(object sender, PaintEventArgs e) { if (this.p == null) this.p = new Pen(Color.FromArgb(100, 200, 200, 200), 5); if (this.rect.Width > 0) e.Graphics.DrawRectangle(this.p, this.rect); } private void pictureBox1_MouseUp(object sender, MouseEventArgs e) { if (e.X < this.rect.X) { this.rect.Width = this.rect.X - e.X; this.rect.X = e.X; } else { this.rect.Width = e.X - this.rect.X; } if (e.Y < this.rect.Y) { this.rect.Height = this.rect.Y - e.Y; this.rect.Y = e.Y; } else { this.rect.Height = e.Y - this.rect.Y; } this.Invalidate(this.rect); } private void pictureBox1_MouseDown(object sender, MouseEventArgs e) { this.rect.X = e.X; this.rect.Y = e.Y; } } } It returns an error here: Application.Run(new Form1()); Why? thanks for all replies ;p

  • Generating Color Gradient

    - by Malfist
I want to display to my user how many (percent wise) of their forms are compliant with the new standard. The way I want to let them know visually is the percent amount will be colored. It will be 0xFF0000 (pure red) for 0% and 0x00FF00 (pure green) at 100%. What is the best way to calculate the color for each step along the way?

  • Best way to implement some type of ITaggable interface

    - by Jack
I've got a program I'm creating that reports on another certain programs backup xml files. I've gotten to the point where I need to implement some type of ITaggable interface - but am unsure how to go about it code wise. My idea is that each item (BackupClient, BackupVersion, and BackupFile) should implement an ITaggable interface for highlighting old, out of date, or non-existent files in their HTML or Excel report. The user will be able to specify tags in the settings. My question is this, how can a user dynamically specify a "tag" such as File Date 3 days old? - Background Color = Red. Actually I guess my question is more, how can I, the programmer, implement this dynamically? I was thinking Expression trees, but am unsure this is the way to go as I havn't studied them much. I know my ITaggable interface would have methods such as AddTag(T tag), RemoveTag(T tag), but what exactly specifies the criteria for the tag to be added? I realize this may be subjective, and can be marked as wiki if need be, but I truly am stuck. Any input would be greatly helpful!

  • How do I remove a control if not a specific type?

    - by joek1975
I have a control that I need to restrict the types of child controls that it can contain during design time (dragging a new control onto an existing control on the form designer). I tried to do this by overriding the OnControlAdded event: Protected Overrides Sub OnControlAdded(ByVal e As System.Windows.Forms.ControlEventArgs) MyBase.OnControlAdded(e) If e.Control.GetType() IsNot GetType(ExpandablePanel) Then MsgBox("You can only add the ExpandablePanel control to the TaskPane.", MsgBoxStyle.Exclamation Or MsgBoxStyle.OkOnly, "TaskPane") Controls.Remove(e.Control) End If End Sub This seems to work, however I get an error message from Visual Studio immediately after the control is removed: 'child' is not a child control of this parent. What does this mean? How can I accomplish this without errors occurring?
