• Newbie one: Virtual Networks - Hyper-V - Remote Destktop - Only one phisical NIC

  Hello everyone, I'll try to explain my situation and I'll apreciate any help: I have a phisical server (quad core, 4Gb ram, 1TB raid 10, etc) with Win Server 2008 R2 enterprise, running IIS, Printing, etc... Also, I want to set up 2 virtual Servers with 2008 R2 standart one with SQL Server and the other with Team Foundation. What i need is: Being able to access from inside the private phisical network, to Remote Desktops on each of the Virtual and the phisical Servers Had Access from the outside, using a router and port Forwarding, to the TFS server and the IIS server (one is virtualized, the other is phisical) This is it, but note that I only have one Phisical Nic. How do I configure this to work. When i set up the hyper-v role, on the wizard something like it showed up but I don't remmember what i choose, and right now, I cannot access none of the servers from remote desktop, not even from the phisical private network. Can anybody point me, what can i do? Thanks in advance (sorry 4 my english, i'm a spanish talker and my english isn't that good)

• A good substitute for ASMX web service methods, but not a general handler

  The best thing I like about ASP.NET MVC, is that you can directly call a server method (called action), from the client. This is so convenient, and so straightforward, that I really like to implement such a model in ASP.NET WebForms too. However, in ASP.NET WebForms, to call a server method from the client, you should either use Page Methods, or Web Services, both of which use SOAP as their communication protocol (though JSON can also be used). There is also another substitution, which is using Generic Handlers. The problem with them however is that, a separate Generic Handler should be written for each server method. In other words, each Generic Handler works like a simple method. Is there anyway else to imitate MVC model in ASP.NET WebForms? Please note that I can't change to MVC platform right now, cause the project at our hand is a big project and we don't have required resources and time to change our platform. What we seek, is a simple MVC model implementation for our AJAX calls. A problem that we have with Web Services, is the known problem of SoapException, and we're not interested in creating custom SoapExctensions.

• Google Blogger Website CName and/or Text File Issues

  I have a blogger Blog website and I would like to have it show up on my company website. I have read a couple articles out there on how to do it. A hand full of them talk about using FTP which is old and no longer available. However, I am trying to following along with this one: http://www.infinite42.com/small-business/integrate-blogger-blog-website Which seems pretty easy but I am having a problem getting Google to Verify the DNS CName or Text Record that I created on my Windows 2007 Server. Do I need to create this record at the registra level. Right now the domain is setup at the registra to point the www record to my server where on my server I tried the Txt Record and the CName Record with no luck in DNS. Here are the Google instructions for creating a CName file record in DNS: Follow the steps below to create a DNS (Domain Name System) record that proves to Google that you own the domain. Add the CNAME record below to the DNS configuration for abc.com. CNAME Label / Host: CNAME Destination / Target: Click Verify below. When Google finds this DNS record, we'll make you a verified owner of the domain. (Note: DNS changes may take some time. If we don't find the record immediately, we'll check for it periodically.) To stay verified, don't remove the DNS record, even after verification succeeds. Here is the link to do it with a CName: http://googlewebmastercentral.blogspot.com/2012/08/domain-verification-using-cname-records.html When I go to add my CName record on my server's DNS the only two fields available are Alias Name and Fully Qualified Domain Name. • How can I compare between web development technologies?

  I would like experts to explain for me how can I compare between web development tools or technologies in order to be able to choose the right one. I'm tired from searching always in the regular way: X Technology vs Y Technology. I'm tired from peoples' biased opinions and usually I don't find a fair comparison. I have decided to put my question here about how can I compare them so you may identify to me the main standards for comparisons so I can compare them by myself and becoming able to choose the technology that is appropriate for the project I will develop. Note: in web development technologies I mean server side languages (e.g. PHP). One important requirement for me that can be defined as major one is cost efficiency and I mean that I don't care about the cost in the near future or the current cost, but what is more important for me is the cost in the future. If, for example, the site becomes one of the most 100 visited sites.   So, how can I compare the cost of different technologies for a future status of a site (such as being very famous site) so I can scale my option easily without missing a good technology like what happened with some sites when they chose not the most effective tool.

• Batch OCR for many PDF files (not already OCRed) ?

  Hello, I use Google Desktop Search (I am on Vista) and not all my PDF files are recognized in my archive folder. It is normal as "PDF files that contain scanned images" are not indexed (http://desktop.google.com/support/bin/answer.py?hl=en&answer=90651) So I would like to OCR many of my PDF files that are not already OCRed. My goal : I give the program a folder and it search alone in the subfolders the PDF files that need to be converted into PDF-OCRed files. Note: In the past, if a PDF file was password protected, I removed the password with another batch (paying) tool: verypdf.com "pwdremover" Any (not too much expensive) idea ? I already tried : Finereader 6 pro on xp at the time, but there was no batch processor included... Paperfile paperfile.net which uses Tesseract code.google.com/p/tesseract-ocr/. But the OCR is only PDF to text, not PDF to PDF! There is also another project code.google.com/p/ocropus Thanks in advance ;)

• Cloud computing - database loading question

  Following is the situation, I want to know whether what I want is possible in cloud computing and is it the best way for me: 1) My main site has a Database with tables with millions of rows, and entries are added almost every second. 2) I will setup a mysql mirror, so there will be a backup database always in sync with the main one. 3) There are few tens of thousands of images- growing. So say total size of images few tens of gigabytes. I will be keeping the image data also in sync on the backup server. 4) There can be short periods where traffic can go 100X the average traffic. 5) I will be using memcache heavily - most database and even frequently used disk files/images will be in RAM. I want that the main site runs on a dedicated server. The backup server is say an Amazon EC2 instance. Now note that since it is live backup, I need to run a small instance continuously. I want that when I anticipate high traffic, I should be able to run a large instance on the cloud and transfer the traffic there. The main point is - I do not want to spend time in "loading" the database on the large instance, as it typically can take few minutes or even hours (experience). So is it possible to just scale the memory/CPU on demand, and not having to load the database or sync up the filesystem? I want to setup my backup scripts etc just ONCE. Thanks JP

• Merge two different API calls into One

  I have two different apps in my django project. One is "comment" and an other one is "files". A comment might save some file attached to it. The current way of creating a comment with attachments is by making two API calls. First one creates an actual comment and replies with the comment ID which serves as foreign key for the Files. Then for each file, a new request is made with the comment ID. Please note that file is a generic app, that can be used with other apps too. What is the cleanest way of making this into one API call? I want to have this as a single API call because I am in a situation where I need to send user an email with all the files as attachment when a comment is made. I know Queueing is the ideal way to do it. But I don't have the liberty to add queing to our stack now. So this was the only way I could think of.

• Is knowledge of hacking mechanisms required for an MMO?

  Say I was planning on, in the future (not now! There is alot I need to learn first) looking to participating in a group project that was going to make a massively multiplayer online game (mmo), and my job would be the networking portion. I'm not that familiar with network programming (I've read a very basic book on PHP, MYSQL and I messed around a bit with WAMP). In the course of my studying of PHP and MYSQL, should I look into hacking? Hacking as in port scanning, router hacking, etc. In MMOs people are always trying to cheat, bots and such, but the worst scenario would be having someone hack the databases. This is just my conception of this, I really don't know. I do however understand networking fairly well, like subnetting/ports/IP's (local/global)/etc. In your professional opinion, (If you understand the topic, enlighten me) Should I learn about these things in order to counter the possibility of this happening? Also, out of the things I mentioned (port scanning, router hacking) Is there anything else that pertains to hacking that I should look into? I'm not too familiar with the malicious/Security aspects of Networking. And a note: I'm not some kid trying to learn how to hack. I just want to learn as much as possible before I go to college, and I really need to know if I need to study this or not.

  Hello, The original question is deleted, and asked again below with accurate information. Edit: Excuse me for my ignorance, my friend has a Logitech Z-5500 set. I thought after comparing those systems on Google images that he had the Z-680, but he hasn't. This set has a single Digital coaxial for DVD or CD players or PC sound cards (requires coaxial cable, sold separately) cable. This single cable was connected to the orange tulip connector (SPDIF coaxial out) on the backside of his onboard HP Elite m9070, this connector is broken. How can I use the digital out with a single cable coaxial cable on the Audigy2 (see image below) (I have the following converters for my disposal, can I use one of these? 3.5 mm male - coax optical mini optical male - toslink optical female 2 x toslink optical female, toslink coupler, optical audio extension note: Is it possible to connect a toslink cable with an mini optical male - toslink converter on the digital out of the Audigy 2? (see image below)

• How to increase virtual hard drive space

  I have a Microsoft Virutal PC hard drive (.vhd format) that's maxed out it's 16 gig hard drive space. What would be the best way to increase this diskspace? Booting into the machine (windows xp professional) and using the disk management snap in, I can see that the virtual drive has approximately 40 more unused gigs of space. Trying to use diskpart, I find out that Windows XP can't extend the boot partition. So I'm at an empass, any suggestions on how to increase the partion or to increase the actual virtual hard drive would be great. Note: The virtual hard drive is running on Windows 7 using XP mode.

• LibGdx efficient data saving/loading?

  Currently, my LibGDX game consists of a 512 x 512 map of Tiles and entities such as players and monsters. I am wondering how to efficiently save and load the data of my levels. At the moment I am using JSON serialization for each class I want to save. I implement the Json.Serializable interface for all of these classes and write only the variables that are necessary. So my map consists of 512 x 512 tiles, that's 260,000 tiles. Each tile on the map consists of a Tile object, which points to some final Tile object like a GRASS_TILE or a STONE_TILE. When I serialize each level tile, the final Tile that it points to is re-serialized over and over again, so if I have 100 Tiles all pointing to GRASS_TILE, the data of GRASS_TILE is written 100 times over. When I go to load/deserialize my objects, 100 GrassTile objects are created, but they are each their own object. They no longer point to the final tile object. I feel like this reading/writing files very slow. If I were to abandon JSON serialization, to my knowledge my next best option would be saving the level data to a sql database. Unless there is a way to speed up serializing/deserializing 260,000 tiles I may have to do this. Is this a good idea? Could I really write that many tiles to the database efficiently? To sum all this up, I am trying to save my levels using JSON serialization, but it is VERY slow. What other options do I have for saving the data of so many tiles. I also must note that the JSON serialization is not slow on a PC, it is only VERY slow on a mobile device. Since file writing/reading is so slow on mobile devices, what can I do?

• .htaccess redirect for www in parent folder and children react

  We were having a problem with the Norton seal not showing up on our affiliate marketing landing pages (landers). Turns out, the Norton seal was super picky about the "www." prefix. I had folder paths like /lp/cmpx where x was a number 1-100 and indicated advertising campaign number. So, to remedy this, I stuck this in my .htaccess file right after the RewriteEngine On line: RewriteCond %{HTTP_HOST} ^example\.com RewriteRule ^(.*)$ http://www.example.com/lp/cmp1/$1 [R=302,QSA,NC,L] Trouble is, I had to do that under every campaign folder, changing cmp1 to whatever the folder name was. Therefore, my question is... Is there a way I can do this with an .htaccess file under the parent folder (/lp in this case) and it will work for each of the children? EDIT: Note that I stuck an .htaccess file in /lp just now to test: RewriteEngine On RewriteCond %{HTTP_HOST} ^example\.com RewriteRule ^(.*)$ http://www.example.com/lp/$1 [R=302,QSA,NC,L] This yielded no effect to the /lp/cmpx folders underneath, to my dismay.

  I realize similar questions were asked/answered on this, but I have a subtle detail to which I can not find answers anywhere. Let's exemplify with the following DNS entries: foo.example.com A 1.1.1.1 bar.example.com A 1.1.1.2 wee.example.com CNAME foo.example.com foo.example.com MX foo.example.com.s9a1.psmtp.com bar.example.com MX bar.example.com.s9a1.psmtp.com Note the last line. My institution has that kind of MX records, where for each MX record the value has the label prepended. Question 1 is, what is the motivation for this (why not just s9a1.psmtp.com)? Question 2 is more subtle and follows.. My understanding is that an MX record should not contain any aliases for neither label nor the value, i.e. the following would be bad practice: wee.example.com MX wee.example.com.s9a1.psmtp.com Then, how should the RRs look for the alias wee.example.com?   We're looking into implementing Variable Envelope Return Path (VERP) for improved bounce processing for our application. Our current mail infrastructure is MS Exchange 2007 but are in the process of upgrading to 2010. We're also implementing Postini for spam filtering. Exchange doesn't support sub-addressing (see also this question on disposable addresses) -- and VERP is somewhat of a specialized application of sub-addressing. Are there any options for implementing VERP in Exchange without putting another non-Exchange SMTP relay in front of Exchange to pre-process incoming messages? Specifically could a transport rule be created that could match against the target (non-existing) recipient, store that recipient address in a special header added to the message, and redirect the message to a pre-created mailbox? Note: we have developer resources available if custom code could be used somehow.

• httpd.conf for case-insensitive file serving

  I'm a complete newbie with regard to managing Apache, so excuse me if I'm phrasing something incorrectly. I have a web site -- say, http://domain.com. The problem is that when I try to open http://domain.com/index.html in a web browser it displays the page, but when I attempt to access http://domain.com/Index.html (note capital I), it responds with HTTP 404. How do I configure Apache to serve both these files (and directories, for that matter) in a case-insensitive manner? Current httpd.conf is here. EDIT Dan C, thanks for a hint. I basically want to allow users to download files from my server and don't really want them to be aware that Index.html and index.html are in fact different. I'm also very willing to know as to what are the ramifications of this decision.
