• VirtualBox 3.2 Release

  The latest version of VirtualBox is out - version 3.2.  It is the first release as Oracle VirtualBox and there are a lot of new features.  Many of these I see directly impacting the Oracle VDI solution in upcoming releases (just my guess, of course), and I am updating my notebook as I write this. Er... OK - Done!There are enough features that they warrant you taking a look at this two-page VirtualBox Community Bulletin.pdf.  No point in me restating them.If you and your organization haven't tried VirtualBox, or you haven't looked at it in a while, you owe it to yourself to give this a run.  This is small, simple, powerful, software that allows you to do way more than most people would ever need in hosting a Virtual machine on you local machine.  I routinely will do a demo on a two-year-old Macbook running OS X locally, plus a Solaris 10 VM running the Sun Ray server, and a Windows XP VM and hang a couple Sun Rays off of it - and the performance is stellar.You can subscribe to the mailing lists and get access to the Beta releases as they come out as well, if you are into 'bleeding edge'.40,000 downloads a day is the current rate (before this new release), but it will jump for sure now.  Might as well join in!

• Too Few Women in IT!

  Last year, only 1% of attendees at Devoxx were women . This year, Devoxx addressed the issue in a panel entitled "Why We Should Target Women." On the panel were Kim Ross, Régina ten Bruggencate, Trisha Gee, Antonio Goncalves and Claude Falguiére. The moderator was Martijn Verburg. The discussion focused on how to attract women to programming and how to get current women programmers to be more active in the community. The panelists agreed that the IT field should not just attract more women but also men of different ethnic backgrounds. The lack of women in programming is in part a cultural issue that differs from region to region. In developed countries, very few women work as programmers whereas in Brazil and India a lot of women pursue careers in IT.  Women in developed countries perceive the field as isolating and very few young women graduate in computer science.  This perception of isolation was based in reality decades ago, but that is no longer the case today. Main ideas discussed by the panel: - Parents should encourage their daughters to play with Lego and learn programming - More organizations should target girls in high schools and young women in university to expose them to programming.  Duchess organization is planning on being more involved with young girl events and mentoring. - Women tend to be more self-critical about their skills and are intimidated by high skill requirements in job advertisements. Companies should change job advertisements to get more women to interviews. - Panelists don't recommend affirmative action because women feel favored and lose credibility. They want to be judged for their skills. - Panelists recommend acting the same way when dealing with either female or male co-workers and managers - Women need mentors (men or women) to learn to become speakers at conferences and to promote themselves better - Men should be sensitive to the fact that women are alone at work to respond to men teasing. The balance of power at work is different from a social setting. - Men also experience discrimination on the job. It is more difficult for men to take time off when their children are sick, for example. Equal valuing of parental obligations could result in equal pay for women. OUM is a flexible, scalable, and evolving body of knowledge that combines existing best practices and field experience with an industry standard framework that includes the latest thinking around agile implementation and cloud computing.    Strong, proven methods are essential to ensuring successful enterprise IT projects both within Oracle and for our customers and partners. OUM provides a collection of repeatable processes that are the basis for agile implementations of Oracle enterprise business solutions. OUM also provides a structure for tracking progress and managing cost and risks. OUM is applicable to any size or type of IT project. While OUM is a plan-based method—including overview material, task and artifact descriptions, and templates—the method is intended to be tailored to support the appropriate level of ceremony (or agility) required for each project. Guidance is provided for identifying the minimum subset of tasks, tailoring the approach, executing iterative and incremental planning, and applying agile techniques, including support for managing projects using Scrum. Supplemental guidance provides specific support for Oracle products, such as UPK. OUM is available to Oracle employees, partners, and customers. • Use of Business Parameters in BPM12c

  With the release of BPM12c, a new feature to use Business Parameters is introduced through which we can define a business parameter which will behave as a global variable which can be used within BPM project. Business Administrator can be the one responsible to modify the business parameters value dynamically at run-time which may bring change in BPM process flow where it is used.This feature was a part of BPM10g product and was extensively used. In BPM11g, this feature is not present currently.Business Parameters can be defined in 2 ways:1. Using Jdev to define business parameters, and 2. Using BPM workspace to define business parameters.It is important to note that business parameters need to be mapped with a valid organisation unit defined in a BPM project. If the same is not handled, exceptions like 'BPM-70702' will be thrown by BPM Engine. This is because business parameters work along with organisation defined in a BPM project.At the same time, we can use same business parameter across different organisation units with different values. Business Parameters in BPM12c has this capability to handle multiple values with different organisation units defined in a single BPM project. This enables business to re-use same business parameters defined in a BPM project across different organisations.Business parameters can be defined using the below data types:1. int2. string 3. boolean4. double While defining an business parameter, it is mandatory to provide a default value. Below are the steps to define a business parameter in Jdev: Step 1:  Open 'Organization' and click on 'Business Parameters' tab.Step 2:  Click on '+' button.Step 3: Add business parameter name, type and provide default value(mandatory).Step 4: Click on 'OK' button.Step 5: Business parameter is defined. Below are the steps to define a business parameter in BPM workspace: Step 1: Login to BPM workspace using admin-username and password.Step 2: Click on 'Administration' on the right top side of workspace.Step 3: Click on 'Business Parameters' in the left navigation panel under 'Organization'. Step 4:  Click on '+' button.Step 5: Add business parameter name, type and provide default value(mandatory).Step 6: Click on 'OK' button.Step 7: Business parameter is defined. Note: As told earlier in the blog, it is necessary to define and map a valid organization ID with predefined variable 'organizationalUnit' under data associations in an BPM process before the business parameter is used. He served in a consultant role to design a lightweight systems integration solution for the next generation Foundations Recovery Network using GlassFish, Java EE 6, JPA, @Scheduled EJBs, CDI, JAX-RS and JSF. He shared his story at the JavaOne 2013 Sunday GlassFish community event - check out the video below: Kerry outlined some of the details of the implementation and emphasized the fact that Java EE can be a great solution for applications that are considered small/lightweight. He mentioned the productivity gains through the modern Java EE programming model centered on annotations, POJOs and zero-configuration - comparing it with competing frameworks that aim towards similar productivity for lightweight applications. As individual steps they are of use but since they were often proclaimed as "the solution" they were potentially misleading. At http://www.simple-talk.com/sql/learn-sql-server/sql-injection-defense-in-depth/ there is an article entitled "SQL Injection: Defense in Depth" - this article argues what I have argued myself. Remember that however low-grade the information on your web site is, if your site is hacked, the public may percive the hacking as your most sensitive information was exposed.

• Interessiert an einem Experience Pass für Java, SQL oder PL/SQL?

  Im Mai startete die Oracle Academy über das "Introduction to Computer Science Programm" erstmals eine Experience Pass Kampagne. Das Introduction-Programm bietet Lehrkräften die Möglichkeit, an speziell organisierten Trainings zu Java, Database Design, SQL oder PL/SQL teilzunehmen und quasi einen ausgewählten Ausbildungspfad zu durchlaufen. Nach erfolgreichem Abschluss (mit einem Oracle Academy Zertifikat) können diese Themen dann an den jeweiligen Schulen unterrichtet werden. Dieses spezielle Ausbildungsprogramm läuft bereits seit mehreren Jahren erfolgreich in Österreich und wird seit Frühjahr 2014 nun auch für deutsche Schulen angeboten! Lehrkräfte, die das Thema Java oder SQL bzw. PL/SQL  bereits seit längerer Zeit unterrichten und kein Ausbildungstraining benötigen, können einen sogennanten Experience Pass anfordern. • Why Your ERP System Isn't Ready for the Next Evolution of the Enterprise

Efficiencies gained through the accounting and resource allocation through ERP software have literally saved companies trillions of dollars. Not only does everything seem to be fine with your ERP system, you haven't had to touch it in years. Why aren't you ready for what comes next? Well judging by the growth rates in the space (Oracle posted only a 3% growth rate, while SAP showed a 12% decline) there hasn't been much modernization going on, just a little replacement activity. If you are like most companies, your ERP system is connected to a proprietary middleware solution that only effectively talks with a handful of other systems you might have acquired from the same vendor. Connecting your legacy system through proprietary middleware is expensive and brittle and if you are like most companies, you were only willing to pay an SI so much before you said "enough." So your ERP is working. It's humming along. You might not be able to get Order to Promise information when you take orders in your call center, but there are work arounds that work just fine. So what's the problem? The problem is that you built your business around your ERP core, and now there is such pressure to innovate your business processes to keep up that you need a whole new slew of modern apps and you need ERP data to be accessible from everywhere. Every time you change a sales territory or a comp plan or change a benefits provider your ERP system, literally the economic brain of your business, needs to know what's going on. And this giant need to access and provide information to your ERP is only growing. What makes matters even more challenging is that apps today come in every flavor under the Sun™. SaaS, cloud, managed, hybrid, outsourced, composite....and they all have different integration protocols. The only easy way to get ahead of all this is to modernize the way you connect and run your applications. Unlike the middleware solutions of yesteryear, modern middleware is effectively the operating system of the enterprise. In the same way that you rely on Apple, Microsoft, and Google to find a video driver for your 23" monitor or to ensure that Word or Keynote runs, modern middleware takes care of intra-application connectivity and process execution. It effectively allows you to take ERP out of the middle while ensuring connectivity to your vital data for anything you want to do. The diagram below reflects that change. In this model, the hegemony of ERP is over. It too has to become a stealthy modern app to help you quickly adapt to business changes while managing vital information. And through modern middleware it will connect to everything. So yes ERP as we've know it is dead, but long live ERP as a connected application member of the modern enterprise. It is a very well rounded option to explore the new products. 2010 Information Worker Demonstration and Evaluation Virtual Machine Note:  It is important to understand you will need a system with Hyper-V to import this VM and get it off and working.  Also, make sure you keep a copy of the original unpacked VM as this is based on a trial version of the OS (time bombed) and there is a chance to rearm the VM, but you are better off either keeping the original files or taking a snapshot as soon as the VM is living in your Hyper-V environment.

• Visual Studio 2010 RC &ndash; Silverlight 4 and WCF RIA Services Development - Updates from MIX Anno

  MIX is happening and there is a lot of excitement around the various releases such as the Windows Phone 7 Developer Preview, IE9 Platform Preview and few other announcements that have been made.  Clearly, the Windows Phone 7 Developer Preview has generated the maximum interest and opened a plethora of opportunities for .NET Developers.  It also takes the mobile development to a new generation and doesn’t force developers to learn different programming language. Along with this, few other releases have been out.  The most anticipated Silverlight 4 RC is out and its corresponding templates are also out there for you to download.  Once VS 2010 RC was released, it was much of a disappointment that it doesn’t support SL4 development as well as the SL4 Business Application Development (a.k.a. WCF RIA Services).   There were few workarounds though nothing concrete.  Earlier I had written about how the WCF RIA Services Preview does work with ASP.NET Development using VS 2010 RC. However, with the release of SL4 RC and the corresponding tooling updates, one can develop for both SL4 as well as SL4 + WCF RIA Services using VS 2010 RC.  This is kind of important and keeps the continuum going until VS 2010 RTMs.  So, the purpose of this post is to quickly give the updates and links to install the relevant tools. Silverlight 4 RC Runtime Windows Runtime or the Mac Runtime Silverlight 4 RC Developer Tools for Visual Studio 2010 RC Silverlight 4 Tools for Visual Studio 2010 (this would install the Runtime as well automatically) Expression Blend 4 Beta Expression Blend 4 Beta If you install the SL4 RC Developer Tools, it also installs the WCF RIA Services Preview automatically.  You just need to install the WCF RIA Services Toolkit that can be downloaded from Install the WCF RIA Services Toolkit Of course you can also just install the WCF RIA Services for VS 2010 RC separately (without SL4 Tools) from here Kindly note, all the above mentioned links are with respect to Visual Studio 2010 RC edition.  If you are developing with VS 2008, then you can just target SL3 (as I write this, there seems to be no official support for developing SL4 with VS 2008) and the related tools can be downloaded from http://www.silverlight.net/getstarted/ Basically you need to download SL 3 Runtime, SDK, Expression Blend 3 and the Silverlight Toolkit.  All the links for the download are available in the above mentioned page. Also, a version of WCF RIA Services that is supported in VS 2008 is available for download at WCF RIA Services Beta for VS 2008 I know there are far too many things to keep in mind.  So, I put a flowchart that could help with depicting it pictorial.  Note that this is just my own imagination and doesn’t cover all scenarios.  for example, if you are neither developing for Webform, Silverlight, you end up nowhere whereas in actual scenario you may want to develop Desktop, Services, Console, Game and what not.  So, keep in mind this is just Web. • Strange Misleading Error[XML -2018/ AC-10006] when doing the R12 Cloning

  During the recent Multi Node to Single Node R12 Clone, Encountered an strange error. When doing the database portion of the clone. Below command 'adclonectx.pl' creates the Context file perl adclonectx.pl contextfile=$ORACLE_HOME/appsutil/SOURCE_CONTEXT_FILE.xml template=$ORACLE_HOME/appsutil/template/adxdbctx.tmp pairsfile=$ORACLE_HOME/appsutil/clone/pairsfile.txt initialnode   When running the same command, It dumped the below error,   file:/tmp/tmpCtxClone.xml<Line 1, Column 1>: XML-20108: (Fatal Error) Start of root element expected. AC-10006: Exception - org.xml.sax.SAXParseException: file:/tmp/tmpCtxClone.xml<Line 1, Column 1>: XML-20108: (Fatal Error) Start of root element expected. thrown while creating OAVars object for file: /tmp/tmpCtxClone.xml The new database context file has been created :   /opt/oracle/product/11.1.0_IOFT/appsutil/IOFT_frws35ta.xml   At first site, I suspected that the issue is with format of the source xml file. Hence compared with the working XML file. Result is clean. Below portion of the error struck me Thrown while creating OAVars object for file: /tmp//dummy.xml   Cause : The /tmp is 100% full.   Fix: Either remove the old files in /tmp  directory  OR  export TEMP=/new/location where there is plenty of free space.
