  • Best free (or cheap) ASP.NET based CMS for a club/association?

    I've been looking for a simple, intuitive ASP.NET based CMS to handle my club/association site. It should be based on ASP.NET so I can add some extra specific pages offer a membership system, e.g. I want to be able to define members which can e.g. comment posts, while anonymous users can only read (no active participation) have features like news, forums, blogs, picture gallery be simple and easy to use I've been looking at GraffitiCMS: so far my favorite, but it has no forum, and no membership system, and no future, it seems - no development whatsoever in over a year :-( Sitefinity: had extreme trouble even getting it installed, and when it's finally up and running, I find it overly complicated and not intuitive at all Umbraco: same problem - hard to install, hard to get up and running, the intro videos on their site are only available to paying subscribers (what's up with that deal???)..... DotNetNuke: seems like a major overkill Community Server: seems like a major overkill - and seems to be more and more commercial, only Any others I've missed that I should have definitely looked at ??

  • Why are Linux-based operating systems considered safer than Windows?

    I hear that Linux-based systems are better for security. Apparently they don't have viruses and do not need antivirus software. Even my university claims this - they refuse to have Windows on their servers, which is a real shame because we wanted to use the .NET framework to create some websites. The only reason I can see Linux being safer is because it's open-source, so bugs theoretically would get caught and fixed sooner. I know a bit about how operating systems work, but haven't really delved into how Linux and Windows implement their OS. Can someone explain the difference that makes Linux-based systems more secure?

    In my httpd.conf: If I have my virtual host configured as: NameVirtualHost *:80 <VirtualHost *:80 ServerName foo.com ServerAlias www.foo.com Include conf.d/foo.conf </VirtualHost <VirtualHost *:80 ServerName bar.com ServerAlias www.bar.com Include conf.d/bar.conf </VirtualHost Can I get by with a single domain SSL certificate or must I purchase a wildcard SSL certificate to handle the www subdomain? I am now trying to configure the ssl.conf file, can I use name-based vhosts in my ssl.conf file like this: NameVirtualHost *:443 <VirtualHost *:443 ServerName foo.com ServerAlias www.foo.com ... Include conf.d/foo.conf </VirtualHost <VirtualHost *:443 ServerName bar.com ServerAlias www.bar.com ... Include conf.d/bar.conf </VirtualHost or do I need IP based vhosts? If this is possible, what kind of cert would I need in order to do this?

    I'm writing a specialised crawler and parser for internal use and I require the ability to take a screenshot of a web page in order to check what colours are being used throughout. The program will take in around ten web addresses and will save them as a bitmap image, from there I plan to use LockBits in order to create a list of the five most used colours within the image. To my knowledge it's the easiest way to get the colours used within a web page but if there is an easier way to do it please chime in with your suggestions. Anyway, I was going to use this program until I saw the price tag. I'm also fairly new to C#, having only used it for a few months. Can anyone provide me with a solution to my problem of taking a screenshot of a web page in order to extract the colour scheme? EDIT: Sorry for not getting back to this sooner, but I've been busy with some other things. Anyway, the code seems to work well, but the problem I am having right now is that I am running it within a form, and naturally with Application.Run() being called I cannot run two instances of the same form at once. It recommended Form.showDialog() but that broke everything.     Ok I am considering putting up something asking ie6 users to upgrade their browser. However, I am concerned that users will upgrade it, not like it. Then blame me.   • Can't sign into linkedin when using a QT4 (WebKit-based) browser?

    I started using the lightweight QT4 browser for some of the time on my Mac. Most simple websites, and even quite a few AJAX-heavy web apps, work for me flawlessly, including gmail (!) However, with LinkedIn, I can't even manage to sign in. Even when I change the useragent to one of a regular browser, it keeps kicking me out. Any ideas what could be wrong and for some workaround?     Most of our company assets are offsite. Everyone either works at home or onsite at a customer. Most asset management/audit/remote control software concentrate on company LAN based assets. We don't need an NMS as we use OpenNMS in the internal network. I was thinking of something like Altiris Client Management Suite but since everything is connected to the internet a SaaS based solution sounds like the ways to go. LogMeIn Central looks ok but not that comprehensive. What do you guys use?

    I currently use curl_multi_* to connect to a few sites. Its only sending a few $_GET variables to start a script, but it outputs the html from the sites to the browser. I want to stop this. I already use a short timeout, but sometimes the scripts start fast, and I don't want to set the timeout any lower, in case it causes it not to connect. So how can I stop the output to the browser from cURL?

I tried ShellExecute(self.WindowHandle,'open','www.google.com',nil,nil, SW_HIDE); and I get my chrome browser open but not hidden, and it opens a tab not a new window, also tried with TStartupInfo with the same results. Is there another way to achieve this?

  • What's a good web-based application for storing your book collection?

    Hi all! I'm looking for a (better if web-based; i.e., something I can install in my home server on my LAN) software to keep track of my books/DVDs/etc. I already know of Readerware offerings, which I find quite interesting, but I'd like something that is Web-based, so I can run it on my MacMini on the living room, and access it from any of the comuputers in the house. I've been googling around, and I've been quite surprised to NOT find any clear option. Alternatively, good "native" software for Windows/MacOSX will be more than welcome. Thanks a lot PS: Given the # of interesting suggestions for Web 2.0, ASP-Hosted type sites, I've clarified the question a bit: I'd prefer some software that I can install and use in my systems, not something "in the cloud" (although I'll check the suggestions out!)
