  In a ruby on rails app, I build an array of Project Names and project id values, but want to truncate the length of the names. Current code is: names = active_projects.collect {|proj| [proj.name, proj.id]} I have tried to add a truncate function to the block, but am getting undefined method for class error. Thanks in advance - I just cannot wrap my head around this yet.

• VB6's private static in C# ?

  In VB6 there are local static variables that keep their values after the exit of procedure. It's like using public vars but on local block. For example: sub count() static x as integer x = x + 1 end sub After 10 calls, x will be 10. I tried to search the same thing in .NET (and even Java) but there was none. Why? Does it break the OOP model in some way, and is there a way to emulate that.

• Seems like IE animates/processes my loading.gif even though I have set display:none?

  I believe this is happening because whenever I perform an ajax request (upon which the loading.gif is set to display:block) the animation does not start at the same position. The starting point feels random which led me to think the animation still goes on behind the scenes in IE. In Firefox the animation starts from "scratch" all the time. Any ideas?

• What is the right way to structure HTML and CSS?

  So, I'm a script monkey at the core. Lately I seem to get stuffed into doing design too for some odd reason and, well, let's just say I should probably have studied better. Either way - What I ask is, what's the Right way to structure a website? This one has a header with links, then a block with tabs, right under another block which consists of two parts and under those a few others who I'm not at yet. However, the thing is, I need to make a block that consists of two parts that are in the same box but structured independently. I'll try to draw it up. I tried using floats, making them as tables, aligning and whatnot. The putting float:left on both tables worked. Kinda. Until I tried to resize the window. So, how do you PROPERLY structure a site like this? three divs and tables? Something else? • Background-image won't change using jquery in IE6

  There is a panel on my page with no default background-image css. On load it is set with jquery to an initial image, waits for 10 seconds then loads a random image out of some predetermined images. There are previous and next buttons which allow you to cycle through the images. In ie6 the initial image loads and then a random image also loads after 10 seconds, however pressing prev/next causes the background to become white and the images aren't loaded. With alerts I was able to find that it's still keeping track of the position and url of the image it's supposed to load, but just won't load it. What does my program see, in terms of the return value from the read, and the byte it tried to read? And is there a way to influence the behavior (under Solaris, or any other ZFS-implementing OS), that is, force failure, or force success, with potentially corrupt data?

  Hi everybody, I made a script (using mootools library) that is supposed to overlay an image with a table grid and when each grid cell is clicked/dragged over its background color changes 'highlighting' the cell. Current code creates a table and positions it over the element (el, image in this case). If you go back to directory root and click on the link to the file the grid table is displayed, if you hit 'refresh' button -- the script runs but the table is not injected. Secondly, although the table HTML is injected in IE, it does not display it. I tried adding nbsp's to make sure its not ignored -- to no avail. Any suggestions on improving code or help with the issues is appreciated. Thanks!

• Default value of a type

  For any given type i want to know its default value. In C#, there is a keyword called default for doing this like object obj = default(Decimal); but I have an instance of Type (called myType) and if I say this, object obj = default(myType); it doesn't work Is there any good way of doing this? I know that a huge switch block will work but thats not a good choice.

• Is it possible to have yui editor change paragraph style without selecting text?

  Is it possible to change the behavior of the yui text editor so that when you make markup changes (via the toolbar bar buttons), for example changing from a paragraph to say a heading or to a list, and you dont have any text selected it assumes you mean the current block that the cursor is in So to change a paragraph to a heading rather than selecting the whole line you just place the cursor somewhere in the paragraph and select heading from the styles drop down.
