• Monitor System Resources from the Windows 7 Taskbar

  The problem with most system monitoring apps is that they get covered up with all of your open windows, but you can solve that problem by adding monitoring apps to the Taskbar. Setting Up & Using SuperbarMonitor All of the individual monitors and the .dll files necessary to run them come in a single zip file for your convenience. Simply unzip the contents, add them to an appropriate “Program Files Folder”, and create shortcuts for the monitors that you would like to use on your system. For our example we created shortcuts for all five monitors and set the shortcuts up in their own “Start Menu Folder”. You can see what the five monitors (Battery, CPU, Disk, Memory, & Volume) look like when running…they are visual in appearance without text to clutter up the looks. The monitors use colors (red, green, & yellow) to indicate the amount of resources being used for a particular category. Note: Our system is desktop-based but the “Battery Monitor” was shown for the purposes of demonstration…thus the red color seen here. Hovering the mouse over the “Battery, CPU, Disk, & Memory Monitors” on our system displayed a small blank thumbnail. Note: The “Battery Monitor” may or may not display more when used on your laptop. Going one step further and hovering the mouse over the thumbnails displayed a small blank window. There really is nothing that you will need to worry with outside of watching the color for each individual monitor. Nice and simple! The one monitor with extra features on the thumbnail was the “Volume Monitor”. You can turn the volume down, up, on, or off from here…definitely useful if you have been wanting to hide the “Volume Icon” in the “System Tray”. You can also pin the monitors to your “Taskbar” if desired. Keep in mind that if you do close any of the monitors they will “temporarily” disappear from the “Taskbar” until the next time they are started. Note: If you want the monitors to start with your system each time you will need to add the appropriate shortcuts to the “Startup Sub-menu” in your “Start Menu”. Conclusion If you have been wanting a nice visual way to monitor your system’s resources then SuperbarMonitor is definitely worth trying out. • Problems deploying MVC2 - Could not load type 'System.Web.Mvc.UrlParameter'

  Hi Everyone, I have problems deploying MVC2 application to my hosting. It shows the following error: Could not load type 'System.Web.Mvc.UrlParameter' from assembly 'System.Web.Mvc, Version=2.0.0.0, Culture=neutral, PublicKeyToken=31bf3856ad364e35'. It looks like it does not understand the new "optional URL parameters" feature of MVC2. This is just a simple test application I created with "New Project" wizard in VWD 2008. It works ok localy both in IIS and Visual Studio web servers. MVC1 web sites are working ok on the hosting server. I've contacted the hosting support and they installed MVC2 but the problem still exists. The web site is working in ASP.NET 2.0 integrated pipeline mode. Does anyone know why it is happening? • IIS6 - 301 permanent redirect response accessing an asp.net web site

  I've installed an ASP.NET 2.0 virtual directory application on the default web site in IIS6 (Windows 2003 computer) with a Visual Studio generated web deployment setup. Unfortunately, following a successfull installation, I'm unable to access our web site. I get a permanent redirect from IIS as shown in the log below : 2010-02-25 15:32:41 W3SVC1 127.0.0.1 GET /naweb3 - 80 - 127.0.0.1 Mozilla/4.0+(compatible;+MSIE+8.0;+Windows+NT+5.2;+Trident/4.0;+.NET+CLR+1.1.4322;+.NET+CLR+2.0.50727;+.NET+CLR+3.0.04506.30;+.NET+CLR+3.0.4506.2152;+.NET+CLR+3.5.30729) 301 0 0 This is the first time I have this kind of problem. Before I go with completely resetting IIS6 on this machine, I'm wondering what could cause this problem. The virtual directory configuration seems fine to me, no redirection at all at this level. • Cannot iterate of a collection of Anonymous Types created from a LINQ Query in VB.NET

  Ok everyone, I must be missing something here. Every LINQ example I have seen for VB.NET anonymous types claims I can do something like this: Dim Info As EnumerableRowCollection = pDataSet.Tables(0).AsEnumerable Dim Infos = From a In Info _ Select New With {.Prop1 = a("Prop1"), .Prop2 = a("Prop2"), .Prop3 = a("Prop3") } Now when I go to iterate through the collection(see example below), I get an error that says "Name "x" is not declared. For Each x in Infos ... Next It's like VB.NET doesn't understand that Infos is a collection of anonymous types created by LINQ and wants me to declare "x" as some type. (Wouldn't this defeat the purpose of an anonymous type?) I have added the references to System.Data.Linq and System.Data.DataSetExtensions to my project. Here is what I am importing with the class: Imports System.Linq Imports System.Linq.Enumerable Imports System.Linq.Queryable Imports System.Data.Linq Any ideas?

I am getting lost in the authentication options: In IIS 6 Manager, I can go in to the properties of the web site and set authentication options. In the web site's web.config file, under system.web, there is an <authentication mode="Windows"/> tag In the web site's web.config file, under system.serviceModel, I can configure: <wsHttpBinding <binding name="MyBinding" <security mode="Transport" <transport clientCredentialType="Basic"/ </security </binding </wsHttpBinding What is the difference between these three? How should each be configured? Some context: I have a simple web site project that contains a single .svc web service, and I want it to use Basic authentication over SSL. (Also, I want it to not use Windows accounts, but maybe that is another question.)

• Text to MP3 using System.Speech.Synthesis.SpeechSynthesizer

  I am trying to get a text-to-speech to save to an MP3. Currently I have the System.Speech.Synthesis speaking to a WAV file nicely. With New System.Speech.Synthesis.SpeechSynthesizer '.SetOutputToWaveFile(pOutputPath) This works fine .SetOutputToWaveStream(<<Problem bit>>) .Speak(pTextToSpeak) .SetOutputToNull() .Dispose() End With Now the first line commented out produces a WAV file which is nice. Currently I am trying to replace that with an MP3 output stream and not having much success. I have tried the Yeti.MMedia converter but either it isn't going to work or I haven't got it to work successfully. I have to admit here I don't know much about encodings, speeds etc. So the question I have is, does anyone know of a nice way I can say something like the following: .SetOutputToWaveStream(New MP3WriteStream(pOutputPath)) and have the SpeechSynthesizer write to the WAV which then gets converted to the MP3 and ends up on the HDD.

  Hi, I am using SQLite for the unit testing and might use it as a database for local development/staging. The System.Data.SQLite has basically 2 versions: x86 and x64. Correct one should be used for the specific platform. I have 64 bit Win7, other guys in the team might use 32-bit OSs. The server's platform is not known at this stage. If I use 32-bit version of the assembly on 64-bit platform I get BadImageFormatException: Could not load file or assembly 'System.Data.SQLite'. I believe similar will happen trying to use 64-bit assembly on 32-bit platform. So my question is what is the best way to reference the SQLite assembly so that it does not depend on the platform and people can just use it? It is ok to use 32-bit version of assembly on a 64-bit platform (Maybe there is a switch for that somewhere?). Thanks, Dmitriy.

If I just do the following, var thread = new Thread( threadFunc ); function threadFunc() { // do stuff } then I get error JS1184: More than one constructor matches this argument list. However, if I try to coerce threadFunc to System.Threading.ThreadStart via var thread = new Thread( ThreadStart(threadFunc) ) I get error JS1208: The specified conversion or coercion is not possible Anyone know how to do this? It seems like it should be trivial.

• Windows Live Writer plugin with .NET 4

  Has anyone written a plugin for Windows Live Writer that runs against .NET 4? I've read the .NET 4 introduces side-by-side running, so one part of the app can target .NET x and another part can target .NET 4. I thought WLW would be a good starting point to try this as previously it only supported plugins up to .NET 2. But my .NET 4 plugin never shows. Maybe they test dependencies before loading the plugins? Anyone else got this working?

• How do I get Nant to use the 4.0 compiler to target .Net 3.5

  Yes I know that sounds a little bit crazy, but I've got .Net 3.5 deployed in the field and I'd like to use the new 4.0 compiler to target it. There are several new syntactic sugar features in the latest versions of Vb.Net and C# which I would like to use,but I am unable (just yet) to enforce a new version of the .Net framework and CLR on my client base. Before the nay sayers jump in with both feet... I have just successfully used Studio 2010 to compile a 3.5 targeted app which used VB.Net auto properties (A new feature in VB.Net 10) so I know the compilers are capable somehow. So back to my question.... How do I convince Nant to use the 4.0 compiler, but to target .Net 3.5 (CLR 2.0) Update: I am using the csc and vbc tasks and not the Solution task. although I'd settle for an answer on how to do this direct with the compilers at this point.

  I am getting an error about the assembly "C:\Ora10g\bin\Zip.exe". The trouble is this solution does NOT use anything in Oracle at all. I could not find a single reference to 10g anywhere in the project. I inherited this from another person who left our group. He never had this issue. Another member of my team said he got this before but reinstalling the client portion of 10g fixed it. No such luck there. I even tried using WinGrep to search the entire solution folder for "Ora10g" but it wasn't there. Any ideas? I can't build this solution until I can figure out how to get rid of this false reference to Oracle. VS 2005 solution. Contains a couple WinForm apps, a couple class libraries, and a web service. I have just tried to identify it and got some reference like IFilter (API or interface) and Lucene.Net (open source), but not sure that is it a right solution. In initial phase it is expected to be around 50,000 resumes and it should be scalable enough if number increases. During loading my application I call method from C++ dll (Knowl.dll) through my third-party dll library (Common.dll) written in C#. After first deploy (from VS to Developing server) evrything works fine. Then I stops Developing Server, doesn't any changes in code and redeploy. Throws AccessViolationException on this imported method. What is it? On second and after redeplies - the same error. Only after deletin source code and recheckout it from CVS I can normally start server.   I've been programming in Asp.Net MVC for quite some time now and to expand a little bit beyond the .Net world I've recently began learning Python and Django. I am enjoying Django but one thing I am missing from Asp.Net MVC is the automatic routing from my urls to my controller actions. In Asp.Net MVC I can build much of my application using this single default route: routes.MapRoute( "Default", // Route name "{controller}/{action}/{id}", // URL with parameters new { controller = "Home", action = "Index", id = "" } // Parameter defaults ); In Django I've found myself adding an entry to urls.py for each view that I want to expose which leads to a lot more url patterns than I've become used to in Asp.Net MVC. Is there a way to create a single url pattern in Django that will handle "[Application]/view/[params]" in a way similar to Asp.Net MVC? Perhaps at the main web site level?

  Okay so the following line returns null because its path cannot be found: System.IO.FileInfo fi = di.GetFiles()[position]; What I am currently doing is: <asp:ScriptManager ID="ScriptManager1" runat="server"> </asp:ScriptManager> <ctl:Gallery runat="server" ID="Gallery1" FolderUrl="~/images/1/" Size="100" /> When this is invoked System.IO.FileInfo fi = di.GetFiles()[position]; it has the value similar to this: C:\Users\SomeUsername\Desktop\Tiamo\(S(mr1h0l55ycuixfbtqxbmttek))\images\1 Any idea how I can return the virtual path without actually having the session key in there? Thank you in advanced for any help you may give :) much appreciated.

• System.Web.AspNetHostingPermission Exception on New Deployment

  I have a friend that is moving a web application from one server over to another. The new server has the same settings as the first server, however, he's running into a Security issue. Here's the error details: Request for the permission of type 'System.Web.AspNetHostingPermission, System, Version=2.0.0.0, Culture=neutral, PublicKeyToken=b77a5c561934e089' failed. The Event Viewer does not point to anything specific in the web.config file or anything. The web applicaiton is on the C: drive. This is a Windows Server 2008 R2 x64 server with a brand new IIS 7 installation. IIS is set in classic mode for this app pool.
