  • Using Dynamic LINQ to get a filter for my Web API

    We are considering using the Dynamic.CS linq-sample included in the "Samples" directory of visual studio 2008 for our WebAPI project to allow clients to query our data. The interface would be something like this (In addition to the normal GET-methods): public HttpResponseMessage List(string filter = null); The plan is to use the dynamic library to parse the "filter"-variable and then execute the query agains the DB. Any thoughts if this is a good idea? Is it a security problem?

  • Silverlight Developer needs ASP.NET MVC Training [on hold]

    With Silverlight on the way out, our company wants to embrace HTML5 and related technologies. Background: Our Silverlight project did everything from generating its own models (or data contracts), sending it over WCF, tracking changes, with a whole deal of back-end code to make the ride smoother, but often also cluttered and more complex. Most of the original developers for this project are gone, and we want to embrace something new for future projects. Having done this very useful MVC Jump Start course at Microsoft Virtual Academy, we are all fired up for the next project. The problem is that we have very little in-depth knowledge of all the many different components. The most important hereof is probably Entity Framework, and (for later) Web API. I suppose the best place to start is at the Microsoft ASP.NET websites. Are there any other suggestions for learning from more experienced developers? I am a senior developer, but my knowledge of ASP.NET MVC (and related) is very limited. PS: We have a project deadline at the end of this month.

    I am aware of the ObjectForScripting property provided for the WebBrowser control, which is provided for WinForms application. I am using the WebBrowser control in a smart device application. I am not able to find this property. Is it documented somewhere that ObjectForScripting is not available for Windows CE? (Got solved in StackOverflow) Also, are there any alternatives?   • .net- open excel file, format the file and save

    I have an ASP web service that uses the Crystal Reports API to download an Excel report. Now, there is a few things I do not like about the Excel report that Crystal generates: - The column widths are static (as in they are not adjusted for the content). - I can't format the header row to be bold - If I suppress a data column in the report, it comes out in the Excel spreadsheet as a blank column. I currently use PHP to open the excel file, autosize the columns, bold the heading and remove blank columns, although using the PHPExcel class for this doesn't work well when the spreadsheet is only a few 100kb in size. I am thinking if I move this activity into the .NET web service, the performance will be much better. Does anyone know an efficient way of opening a Excel file and performing the operations listed above?

  • Performance Testing a .NET Smart Client Application (.NET ClickOnce technology)

    Has anyone ever had to run performance tests on a ClickOnce application? I have engaged with a vendor who had trouble setting up their toolset with our software because it is Smart Client based. They are understandably more geared toward purely browser-based applications. I wonder if anyone has had to tackle this before and if so would you recommend any vendors who use industry standard tools such as Load Runner (which i assume can handle the smart client)? Thanks

  • How to fine tune a Membership Provider?

    After all the answers to my last question about fine-tuning turned out to be more useful than I expected, I thought that I would ask another similar Question about the MembershipProviders as well. Okay, so firstly, to clarify: I know what a Membership, Role, and Profile provider is, how to implement my own, and how to configure them, and most of the things about them. Implementing a role and profile provider is pretty straightforward, because they only require simple CRUD most of the time. (A single line of LINQ is enough for about half of the RoleProvider's methods.) However, the Membership provider is a differend beast. Many of you may realize that it violates the SR (Single Responsibility) principle, because it has to do EVERYTHING related to user management. While this leaves a lot of room for customizations, it has its downsides as well. There is no information on the Internet about what their EXACT expected behaviour is, such as when should they throw exceptions or simply return null, and stuff like that. I use this sample implementation for reference, but it also contains several contradictions. For example, it uses its own ValidateUser method for checking for credentials in the ChangePassword method. But the ValidateUser also updates the user's LastLoginDate to the current date. So, does the framework expect that I set it in my own provider as well, or is it simply a mistake in the sample? The other is: the ChangePassword method throws an exception every time when validating the new password, but CreateUser doesn't ever throw an exception, it simply returns false. And last, but not least: it counts the invalid password attempts of the user and locks them if it passes a threshold. While this is good, but it requires manual action to unlock the users. Is it a problem if my provider automatically unlocks the user after a certain amount of time? (EDIT) I almost forgot: the CreateUser method in the sample inserts the ID from the method parameter. I actually think this is bad practice, because I use inters with auto incement as IDs, so inserting them from some method parameter is not an option. Should I just ignore the parameter, or require that its value is null and throw an exception if it isn't? All in all, does ASP.NET have any assumptions about the behaviour of a MembershipProvider? Is there any documentation which describes when should I throw an exception or just return null? I also tried to find a set of generic unit tests which would provide some guidance about the expected behaviour, but no luck, I found plenty of articles about "Unit testing is good", and "How to unit test a MembershipProvider", but not one where there would be any actual tests.   • Problems migrating databinding in VB.NET from Winforms to ASP.NET 2.0

    And this was supposed to be so easy... I have existing business and data access layers that handle the retrieval and update of the data in question. These work great with the existing Winforms application (.Net V2.0) Now, in trying to write a new web-based UI, I'm running into all sorts of problems (last time I wrote asp.net code was in 1.1). Specifically, I can't data bind a text box to a business object. Oh, sure there's the ObjectDataSource but that wants to know how to do CRUD operations on the data. What I'm looking for is something that acts like the 'classic' binding objects so that, in my code, it's as simple as retrieving the object and doing a a refresh. The data component like FormView and DetailsView are so generic-looking that it's ridiculous. The existing application would have tabbed dialogs, text boxes grouped by panels, etc. On top of that, I have a directive to use master pages and unless one control causes it, I can't seem to get the content section to expand. I can't just put a text box 'below' the bottom of "Content1" and have it resize the content section - which gives me the same results as an earlier question I posted when the footer wasn't being 'pushed down' - relative position solved that but doesn't seem to solve it with placing small text boxes in the area. What I want is fairly simple. Something like: bindingobject.datasource = businessdataobject bindingobject.refresh ...and have the text boxes refresh with the new values. Likewise to have 'businessdataobject' properties updated as the user enters new data. I was able to do this with the GridView (grdRequests.DataSource = lstRequests) by making a list of asp:BoundField tags inside the collection of the GridView. Am I tilting at windmills here?

  • Is there a point to have multiple VS projects for an ASP.NET MVC application?

    I'm developing MVC application where I currently have 3 projects in solution. Core (it is supposed to be for Repositories, Business Classes, Models, HttpModules, HttpFilters, Settings, etc.) Data access (Data provider, for instance SqlDataProvider for working with SQL Server datastore - implements Repository interfaces, XmlDataProvider - also implements Repository interfaces but for local XML files as datastore) ASP.NET MVC project (all the typical stuff, UI, controllers, content, scripts, resources and helpers). I have no Models in my ASP.NET MVC project. I've just run into a problem because of that coz I want to use the new DataAnnotation feature in MVC 2 on my Bussiness class, which are, as said in Core, however I have I want to be able to localize the error messages. This where my problem starts. I cannot use my Resources from MVC project in Core. The MVC project references Core and it cannot be vice-versa. My options as I see them are: 1) Move Resources out but this would require correcting a whole bunch of Views and Controllers where I reference them, 2) Make a complete restructure of my app What are your thoughts on this? Also, Should I just move everything business related into Models folder in MVC project?? Does it even make any sense to have it structured like that, because we can just make subfolders for everything under MVC project? The whole Core library is not intended to ever be used for anything else, so there actually no point of compiling it to a separate DLL. Suggestions appreciated.

  • "too many automatic redirections were attempted" error message when using a httpWebRequest in .NET

    I am attempting to request a page like "http://www.google.com/?q=random" using the webrequest class in vb.net. we are behind a firewall, so we have to authenticate our requests. I have gotten past the authentication part by adding my credentials. But once that works it seems to go into a redirecting loop. Does anyone have an ideas, comments, suggetions why this is? Has anyone else experienced this problem?     from what i can gather the mailbox bit of the web interface works fine.. when any of the users go to options (top right) and try to use some of the features such as the Organise Mail Delivery Reports to find messages etc... it comes up with a message .. "An item with the same key has already been added" I've looked in the event viewer and i think its this error - Watson report about to be sent for process id: 7016, with parameters: E12IIS, c-RTL-AMD64, 14.00.0639.021, ECP, ECP.Powershell, https://x.x.x.x/ecp/PersonalSettings/Accounts.svc/GetList, UnexpectedCondition:ArgumentException, c09, 14.00.0639.021.   • ASP.NET NVC - Add XHTML into validation error messages

    Hi, Just starting with ASP.Net MVC and have hit a bit of a snag regarding validation messages. I've a custom validation attribute assigned to my class validate several properties on my model. When this validation fails, we'd like the error message to contain XHTML mark-up, including a link to help page, (this was done in the original WebForms project as a ASP:Panel). At the moment the XHTML tags such as "< a ", in the ErrorMessage are being rendered to the screen. Is there any way to get the ValidationSummary to render the XHTML markup correctly? Or is there a better way to handle this kind of validation? Thanks
