• How can I disable keep-alive on ASP.NET Web Service client requests?

  I have a few web servers behind an Amazon EC2 load balancer. I'm using TCP balancing on port 80 (rather than HTTP balancing). I have a client polling a Web Service (running on all web servers) for new items every few seconds. However, the client seems to stay connected to one server and polls that same server each time. I've tried using ServicePointManager to disable KeepAlive, but that didn't change anything. The outgoing connection still had its "connection: keep-alive" HTTP header, and the server kept the TCP connection open. I've also tried adding an override of GetWebRequest to the proxy class created by VS, which inherits from SoapHttpClientProtocol, but I still see the keep-alive header. If I kill the client's process and restart, it'll connect to a new server via the load balancer, but it'll continue polling that new server forever. Is there a way to force it to connect to a random server each time? I want the load from the one client to be spread across all of the web servers. The client is written in C# (as is the server) and uses a Web Reference (not a Service Reference), which points to the load balancer.

• How can Core Data store an NSData?

  The documentation says, that core data properties can only store NSString, NSNumber and NSDate types. However, a lot of Core Data users claim Core Data could also store an NSData type. But I wasn't able to see that in the documentation, although the Xcode Data Modeler allows to choose a data type called "binary" (which seems to be NSData). Did I miss something? Is there a hidden place in the documentation that indeed lists NSData for binary stuff?

• asp.net, how to change text color to red in child nodes in VB codes?

  I got everything worked now by list of server Name but I want to add a IF statement by checking a column from SQL Server called Compliance by either True or False value listed. If it False, the Name will change text color to Red. If it True, the Name won't change text color. I am not sure how add that in VB codes side. I am pretty sure that I would need to put IF statement inside While dr.Read(). I am pretty new to VB.Net and not sure which VB code that change text color.   I know a bunch of people that are really enjoying the improvements that ASP.NET MVC 2 made over the first release. I have just started to migrate our MVC 1 project over and so far areas has totally cleaned up the subfolder mess we had in our large scale application. As I dive deeper into all the improvements and changes that were made I still keep thinking to myself man it would be nice if they had x in this release. For isntance, I would love it if they had some sort of dependency injection built in instead of having to use third party solutions. My real question is now that ASP.NET MVC 2 is out in the wild, what features do want/wish the team had implemented and hope they will implement for ASP.NET MVC 3?

• Visual Studio - 'Browse UDDI Servers' -> 404 ?

  Hi - I have a ASP.Net application which implements a web service. Within the ASP.Net application there's a test script which consumes the web service and it all works etc. I have built a .NET console application and want to 'Add a Web Reference' so that the console app can consume the web service provided by the ASP.NET application. When I use the 'Browse UDDI Servers on the local network' to do that any plausible URL I use results in a 404. I'm guessing I need to do something to my ASP.Net application so that it acts as an UDDI server ? Does anyone know what ? Update I just wanted to clarify something - I'm not desperate to use UDDI it just seems that's the only option in my circumstances which are : I'm actually doing this for another developer who is used to using Visual Studio to do this stuff The other developers system will need to run on another machine within the same network.

  I am a PHP programmer. I have no .Net coding experience (last seen it 4 years ago). Not interested in code-behind model since this is a quick temporary hack. What I am trying to do is generate an output.txt file whenever the user submits new data. So an output.txt file if exists should be replaced with the new one. • Nice, clean, simple way of getting a dataset from ASP.NET to plain HTML jQuery or JavaScript library

  I know this is a probable open ended question, and I have tried looking around so much over the last year or two... maybe I am looking for a perfect place that doesn't exist! of course it's all about perception no less.. Anyway, just to clarify what I am trying to do and why: I want to be able to use (primarily for the moment) ASP.NET or services thereof to get a dataset - whatever the source data, I can obviously get a dataset of rows/Columns. I want to be able to, as simply as possible, get that data over to the client via xml/json/whatever, to then use in a "variety" of ways. "Variety" of ways meaning I would like to "easily" bind that data to say a grid, or a combo dropdown or just simply render to a textbox - BUT by referencing the dataset as I would say on the serverside. Now I know this all sounds simplistic, and I know there are lots of complications.. so I have tried the following so far over the last year or so: ExtJS - very good, nice solid framework, but just found it a bit too much to use in everyday basic apps - great if I was building a whole application with it Yahoo YUI - not looked recently, but I guess some of the concepts with ExtJS were similar? JQuery - of course to get data etc, it was ok, and I guess there are so many 3rd party plugins, that a mix and match might work? Adobe SPRY - ironically this was as close to getting a dataset style structure to Javascript/client, although it seemed to drop off/go quiet..? I maybe wrong.. I did have a very cursory play with Tibco GI and another one I cannot remember the name of! but again, it felt like it was great to build a whole app perhaps? Anyway, I am very amazed by all of the technologies coming out, and really not biased one way or the other, I really just want a very simple way of getting data from the server, and having a basic/very flexible way of working with that data in the client without using server technologies.. I need to keep the server flexible as I may need to use PHP, or java technologies not just .NET So again, sorry for the rambles, but if anyone out there has had a simple experience, or would like to share some ideas, it would be very welcomed!! • Update image in ASP.NET page from memory without refreshing the page.

  I have a command line C# server and an ASP.NET client, they both communicate via .NET Remoting. The server is sending the client still images grabbed from a webcam at say 2 frames a second. I can pass the images down to the client via a remote method call and the image ends up in this client method: public void Update(System.Drawing.Image currentFrame) { // I need to display the currentFrame on my page. } How do i display the image on the a page without saving the image to the hard disc? If it was a winForms app i could pass currentFrame to a picturebox ie. picturebox.Image = currentFrame. The above Update method gets fired at least 2 times a second. If the client was a winForms app i could simply put picturebox.Image = currentFrame and the current frame on the screen would automatically get updated. How do i achieve the same effect with ASP.NET? Will the whole page need to be reloaded etc?

  Assume i have a custom Windows application written in C#. This application has only the following functionalists, add, edit, delete and view. For example, a user can add a sale, change sales record, delete a sale record or view the whole sales record. I need to add some reporting functionalists e.g. i want a user to print the sales of a certain customer from 2008 to 2009 into pdf, what all products a certain customer has purchased from us and so on. I will only include the basic common report requests that are usually needed in the office. Any other kind of reports that are requested inconsistently, i would do it manually from my side at the back end and send the results manually to the requester. What i would do is: If a user wants more info of a certain customer, a special window box appears for that customer. This window box will have different controls that allows user to request more info such as, print customer purchases from ..... to ..... (user chooses the dates) and user will view results in pdf or so. Of course, at the back scene i will write an appropriate SQL Query with parameters that meets a certain function. Is this how it should be done? I have heard about SQL Reporting, i don't know anything about it yet. I will check it out. Anyhow, your suggestions won't harm. I'm still a student, so i don't have practical experience yet. I hope my question is clear enough. Thank you.

  Currently my employer deploys a web application over 3 servers. DB - No public route Web Service DAL - No public route Web Server - Public route The reason for this is the theory that if the web server is compromised, they don't arrive at the DB directly, but instead arrive at the DAL box. To my mind, as the DAL box and Web Sever box - both run windows/IIS - if the public box has been compromised, the same exploit would likely work on the DAL box - therefore I do not see this as a real security benefit. I would like to propose we remove the middle machine and allow the web server to connect directly to the database. Is this middle box really a benefit?

If not use Ajax, it maybe much easier, just return View, but if use AJAX, what data structure should return?I just use Json to return the data, but i found each JSON data model return to the client browser, the JS have to use different code to parse it, remove the originally table rows, add the new data rows(because the column is different) etc. It make me crazy, is there any better way to do that? If the server is not online it spends about 4 full seconds trying to open the connection before deciding that it is not available. Is there a way to test the connection without trying to actually opening it and waiting for the timeout? Something like a database-equivalent of ping?

  I have been looking into PowerPivot and concluded that for "self service BI" and ahoc buidling of cubes it has its uses. In particular I like the enhanced UI that you get from using PowerPivot rather than just using a PivotTable hooked up to an analysis services datasource. However it seems that hooking up PowerPivot to an existing analysis services cube is not a solution for "organisational BI". It is not always desireable to suck millions of rows into excel at once and the interface between PowerPivot and analysis services is very poor in my book. Hence the question is can an existing analysis services solution get the enhanced ui features that power pivot brings, withoout using powerpivot as the design tool? If powerpivot is aimed ad self service/personal BI then it seems bizare that the UI for this is better than for bigger/more costly analysis services solutions.

• ASP.NET: Why can't I call a web-service twice in one page?

  Hi all! I built a web-application which calls a web-service twice in the application's log-in page - first, on Page_Load, and the second time is after a button click. When debugging, everything goes well, but after publishing the web-application and trying it - I cannot make the two calls for the web-service (each call is invoking a different function in the same web-service). If I call it once (say, in the Page_Load) its OK, but once I get to the button click event, the page just seems to be loading but actually doing nothing (loading to infinity). When I disabled the web-service call in Page_Load, the web-service call after the button click worked well, and if I switched between them (disabled the call in button click and enabled the call in Page_Load) the enabled one worked OK. How come this is happening? What did I do wrong? Could it be related to the fact that the location where I published my web-application has some URL-rewriting rules?

  I want to run coverage from the command line, but can't seem to get NCover 1.5.8 to instrument the code. It must be possible as when I run coverage tests with TestDriven.net it works. the difference seems to be that TD.NET is able to get NCover to use framework 4.0 (you get this in the log when it runs : MESSAGE: v4.0.30319) but from the command line I can't make it (I get this in the log : MESSAGE: v2.0.50727) So how can I make NCover play nice with nunit from the commandline, like it does with TD.NET?

• Is *not* using the asp.net membership provider a bad idea?

  Is it generally a really bad idea to not use the built-in asp.net membership provider? I've always rolled my own for my asp.net apps (public facing), and really have not had any problems in doing so. It works, and seems to avoid a layer of complexity. My needs are pretty basic: once setup, the user must use email address and password to login, if they forget it, it will be emailed back to them (a new one). After setup there is little that needs to be done to each user account, but I do need to store several extra fields with each user (full name, telephone and a few other fields etc). The number of users that required login credentials are small (usually just the administrator and a few backups), and everyone else uses the site unauthenticated. What are the big advantages that I might be missing out on by skipping the asp.net membership provider functionality?
