• Is it possible to implement a GC.GetAliveInstancesOf<T>() (for use in debugging)?

  Hi, I know this was answered before, but I'd like to pose a somewhat different question. Is there any conceivable way to implement GC.GetAliveInstancesOf(), that can be evaluated in Visual Studio Debug Watch window? Sasha Goldstein shows one solution in this article, but it requires every class you want to query inherit from a specific base class. I'll emphasize that I only want to use this method during debugging, so I don't care that the GC may change an object's address in memory during runtime. One idea might be to somehow harness the !dumpheap –type command of SOS, and do some magic trick to create a temporary variable and have it point out to the memory address printed by SOS. Does anyone have a solution that works?

• SQL Server won't perform regular expression validation on XML column

  Hi I have an XML column in my table which contains this xsd snippet: <xsd:element name="Postcode" minOccurs="0"> <xsd:simpleType> <xsd:restriction base="xsd:string"> <xsd:pattern value="^[0-9]{4}$" /> </xsd:restriction> </xsd:simpleType> </xsd:element> The regular expression should require a string containing 4 numerical digits. It validates perfectly in Visual Studio and is a correct regular expression. SQL Server, on the other hand, won't accept it. The error message I receive is: XML Validation: Invalid simple type value: '1234'. Location: / * : Donor[1]/*:Postcode[1]. I have an email address regex working fine, but can't get this simple numerical regex to work.

• C++ Win32 Unhandled Exception Handler

  currently I used SetUnhandledExceptionFilter() to provide callback to get information when an unhandled exception was occurred, that callback will provides me with EXCEPTION_RECORD which provides ExceptionAddress. [1]what is actually ExceptionAddress is? does it the address of function / code that gives exception, or the memory address that some function tried to access? [2]is there any better mechanism that could give me better information when unhandled exception occured? (I can't use debug mode or add any code that affect runtime performance, since crash is rare and only on release build when code run as fast as possible) [3]is there any way for me to get several callstack address when unhandled exception occured. [4]suppose ExceptionAddress has address A, and I have DLL X loaded and executed at base address A-x, and some other DLL Y at A+y, is it good to assume that crash was PROBABLY caused by code on DLL X?

• How can I get a value from an xml key/value pair with xpath in my xslt?

  I have some xml that I want to process using xslt. A good amount of the data comes through in key value pairs (see below). I am struggling with how to extract the value base on the key into a variable. I would like to be able to do something like this: <xsl:variable name="foo" select="/root/entry[key = 'foo']/value"/> but that doesn't seem to work. Here is sample xml. <?xml version="1.0" encoding="ISO-8859-1"?> <root> <entry> <key> foo </key> <value> bar </value> </entry> </root> What would the correct xpath be for this?

• Downloading Eclipse's Source Code

  I'm doing a study on large Java projects and would like to view the source code for Eclipse. I have gone to this url (http://wiki.eclipse.org/index.php/CVS_Howto) and figured that the most useful cvs repository for me to look at would be this one: :pserver:[email protected]:/cvsroot/eclipse (The Eclipse platform project) However, when looking at this repository, it has so many modules! Which modules should I be trying to check out? I don't necessarily want to build the IDE from source, however, I just want to get the core Eclipse code base to perform some analysis. Would I just check out any modules starting with "org.eclipse..."? Should I be checking out any of the others? Or is there an easier way to get the source? I read somewhere that you can get the source from the binary version of Eclipse but I am unsure where to find the source.

My question is how to use timer? I know how to use timer but How can I use it on every lessons start time?I have table that includes start time of lessons. Also am I have to stop timer after search ends?And If I stop timer could I re-run timer againg? And one additional question that how can I track that new students come or some body left class room?

• spring web application context is not loaded from jar file in WEB-INF/lib when running tomcat in eclipse

  I am experimenting with spring, maven, and eclipse but stumbling on a weird issue. I am running Eclipse Helios SR1 with the STS (Spring tools suite) plugin which includes the Maven plugin also. What i want to achieve is a spring mvc webapp which uses an application context loaded from a local application context xml file, but also from other application contexts in jar files dependencies included in WEB-INF/lib. What i'd ultimately like to do is have my persistence layer separated in its own jar file but containing its own spring context files with persistence specific configuration (e.g a jpa entityManagerFactory for example). So to experiment with loading resources from jar dependencies, i created a simple maven project from eclipse, which defines an applicationContext.xml file in src/main/resources Inside, i define a bean <bean id="mybean" class="org.test.MyClass" /> and create the class in the org.test package I run mvn-install from eclipse, which generates me a jar file containing my class and the applicationContext.xml file: testproj.jar |_META-INF |_org |_test |_MyClass.class |_applicationContext.xml I then create a spring mvc project from the Spring template projects provided by STS. I have configured an instance of Tomcat 7.0.8 , and also an instance of springSource tc Server within eclipse. Deploying the newly created project on both servers works without problem. I then add my previous project as a maven dependency of the mvc project. the jar file is correctly added in the Maven Dependencies of the project. In the web.xml that is generated, i now want to load the applicationContext.xml from the jar file as well as the existing one generated for the project. • Using Mapkit to create a local searchable Map

  Using MapKit as a base, I'm planning on adding a map to a project with 'local search' capabilities. I think 'local search' describes the feature I want to design into the map. Here is my vision. The map is displayed on the bottom half of a view. The user's current location is highlighted by default. When the user pushes the 'search' button annotation pins drop onto the map. The search is programmatically fixed to a certain item....for example supermarkets. So supermarkets in a 5 mile radius of the user's current location will populate the map. How would I add this local search feature to the already amazing MapKit? I've learned an incredible amount as a new developer in the last few months, and look forward to learning googles...correction googols more. Thanks in anticipation.

• WPF Visual States and the transitions between them

  I'm trying to define many different states in my app (around 7 in my case) and I have defined each one of them with a "Default Transition" of zero seconds, but the animation that accompanies each state goes for 1 second. When I fire up my app I have a button than goes through the states one by one, when I go "State1" - "State2" it looks perfect, but when I tell my app (which should be in State2 now) to go to "State3" it reverts all the objects in my scene back to their base state, and then animates to "State3", why doesnt it go from "State2" to "State3". I was hoping to only define each state's end position without defining a starting position as this would really take a long time to do. Can this be done? Any examples? Cheers, Mark

• Mercurial: pull changes from unversioned copy

  I am currently maintaining a Mercurial repository of the project I am working on. The rest of the team, however, doesn't. There is a "good" (unversioned) copy of the code base that I can access by SSH. What I would like to do is be able to do something like an hg pull from that good copy into my master repository whenever it gets updated. As far as I can tell, there's no obvious way to do this, as hg pull requires you have a source hg repository. I suppose I could use a utility like rsync to update my repository, then commit, but I was wondering: Is there was an easier/less contrived way to do this?

  I am testing a client application that authenticates using RSA SecurID hardware tokens. The authentication is failing and I am not finding any useful information in the log files. I am using Authentication Manager 8.0 and the Java SDK. I have a traffic capture which I would like to analyze with Wireshark to and from port 5500 on the authentication agent. But I can't find the packet format searching the internet or on the the RSA SecurCare knowledge base. Can anybody direct me to the packet format?   Created a simple class to test out the OnExceptionAspect in PostSharp. [Serializable] [AttributeUsage(AttributeTargets.Method | AttributeTargets.Class)] public class ExceptionSwallower : OnExceptionAspect { public override void OnException(MethodExecutionEventArgs eventArgs) { eventArgs.FlowBehavior = FlowBehavior.Return; base.OnException(eventArgs); } } Added the attribute to a method [ExceptionSwallower] public void SomeMethod() { throw new Exception(); } and invoked it. However, the exception is not actually swallowed, which seems odd. I haven't been able to find any similar problems, so I expect there is some minor thing I haven't gotten right. Anyone?

Note: The actual variable names and values I used were different, but the methods and code are the same.

• Procedures before checking in to source control?

  I am starting to get a reputation at work as the "guy who breaks the builds". The problem is not that I am writing dodgy code, but when it comes to checking my fixes back into source control, it all goes wrong. I am regularly doing stupid things like : forgetting to add new files accidentally checking in code for a half fixed bug along with another bug fix forgetting to save the files in VS before checking them in I need to develop some habits / tools to stop this. What do you regularly do to ensure the code you check in is correct and is what needs to go in? Edit I forgot to mention that things can get pretty chaotic in this place. I quite often have two or three things that Im working on in the same code base at any one time. When I check in I will only really want to check in one of those things.

Using rails single table inheritance I have the following models and class method: class PhoneNumber < ActiveRecord::Base def self.qual?(number) klass = self klass.exists?(:phone_number => phone_number) end end class Bubba < PhoneNumber end class Rufus < PhoneNumber end Bubba.qual?("8005551212") Tests pass and everything seems to work properly in rails console. Just wanted to confirm that I'm not headed for future trouble by using self in the superclass PhoneNumber and using that to execute class methods on subclasses from the parent. Is there a better way?

• file_column not creating files, just empty tmp directory

  Up to the end of December 2009 everything worked fine, so i assume that after some upgrades on servers (Ubuntu 8.10 and second Ubuntu 9.10) something stopped working. Model: class Product < ActiveRecord::Base belongs_to :category file_column :thumbnail, :magick = { :geometry = "150x100" } there is of course table 'products' in database, and it has column 'thumbnail' what's interesting that File actually is uploaded to server, it goes to the /tmp directory under RackMultipartXXXX-0 name, and it is unmodified image. The problem is, that then this file is not moved to 'tmp' dir under RAILS_ROOT/public/product/ nor the 'XX' (where xx means ID of a product) under public/product also. i don't know what to do, i spend few HOURS trying different versions of file_column, also trying to make new, test rails application only from scaffold, but then, in this new application problem was the same

• Advantage of using a static member function instead of an equivalent non-static member function?

  I was wondering whether there's any advantages to using a static member function when there is a non-static equivalent. Will it result in faster execution (because of not having to care about all of the member variables), or maybe less use of memory (because of not being included in all instances)? Basically, the function I'm looking at is an utility function to rotate an integer array representing pixel colours an arbitrary number of degrees around an arbitrary centre point. It is placed in my abstract Bullet base class, since only the bullets will be using it and I didn't want the overhead of calling it in some utility class. It's a bit too long and used in every single derived bullet class, making it probably not a good idea to inline. How would you suggest I define this function? As a static member function of Bullet, of a non-static member function of Bullet, or maybe not as a member of Bullet but defined outside of the class in Bullet.h? What are the advantages and disadvantages of each?

  I'm considering remaking my blog(currently in PHP, but <100 lines of non-layout code) in Ruby on Rails just for the fun of it. I want to make another project in Rails, but I should learn Rails(more than hello world) before I go to try to create a full project. Another thing I want to do while remaking my blog is to at least figure out what TDD is all about. So how would you go about taking a Test Driven approach to the creation of a blog? What tests would you write? How would you begin? Everytime I visualize writing a blog it'd end up needing a million tests for a single component to fully test it. How do I avoid writing too many tests? Also, I am making this community wiki because I intend for this to basically be made into a mini tutorial/knowledge base...

• Getting really weird long Contact Group names

  When looking at the Contact Groups on Google Contacts or in the People application of my HTC Legend phone, I get the groups names ok eg: Friends, Family, VIP, Favorite etc...   Hi, I'm getting the following warning when building an ad hoc distribution copy of a new iPad only application: [BWARN]warning: building with 'Targeted Device Family' that includes iPad ('2') requires building with the 3.2 or later SDK. These are my build settings: Architectures: Optimized (armv6 armv7) Any iPhone OS Simulator: i386 Any iPhone OS Device: Optimized (armv6 armv7) Base SDK: iPhone Device 3.2 Valid Architectures: armv6 armv7 Target Device Family: iPad iPhone OS Deployment Target: iPhone OS 3.2 With this in mind I don't understand the warning.
