  • ASP.NET MVC 2 AJAX dilemma: Lose Models concept or create unmanageable JavaScript

    Hi, Ok, let's assume we are working with ASP.NET MVC 2 (latest and greatest preview) and we want to create AJAX user interface with jQuery. So what are our real options here? Option 1 - Pass Json from the Controller to the view, and then the view submits Json back to the controller. This means (in the order given): User opens some View (let's say - /Invoices/January) which has to visualize a list of data (e.g. <IEnumerable<X.Y.Z.Models.Invoice>>) Controller retrieves the Model from the repository (assuming we are using repository pattern). Controller creates a new instance of a class which we will serialize to Json. The reasaon we do this, is because the model may not be serializable (circular reference ftl) Controller populates the soon-to-be-serialized class with data Controller serializes the class to Json and passes it the view. User does some change and submits the 'form' The View submits back Json to the controller The Controller now must 'manually' validate the input, because the Json passed does not bind to a Model See, if our View is communicating to the controller via Json, we lose the Model validation, which IMHO is incredible disadvantage. In this case, forget about data annotations and stuff. Option 2 - Ok, the alternative of the first approach is to pass the Models to the Views, which is the default behavior in the template when you start a new project. We pass a strong typed model to the view The view renders the appropriate html and javascript, sticking to the model property names. This is important! The user submits the form. If we stick to the model names, when we .serialize() the form and submit it to the controller it will map to a model. There is no Json mapping. The submitted form directly binds to a strongly typed model, hence, we can use the model validation. E.g. we keep the business logic where it should be. Problem with this approach is, if we refactor some of the Models (change property names, types, etc), the javascript we wrote would become invalid. We will have to manually refactor the scripting and hope we don't miss something. There is no way you can test it either. Ok, the question is - how to write an AJAX front end, which keeps the business logic validation in the model (e.g. controller passes and receives a Model type), but in the same time doesn't screw up the javascript and html when we refactor the model?

  • Python: Script works, but seems to deadlock after some time

    I have the following script, which is working for the most part Link to PasteBin The script's job is to start a number of threads which in turn each start a subprocess with Popen. The output from each subprocess is as follows: 1 2 3 . . . n Done Bascially the subprocess is transferring 10M records from tables in one database to different tables in another db with a lot of data massaging/manipulation in between because of the different schemas. If the subprocess fails at any time in it's execution (bad records, duplicate primary keys, etc), or it completes successfully, it will output "Done\n". If there are no more records to select against for transfer then it will output "NO DATA\n" My intent was to create my script "tableTransfer.py" which would spawn a number of these processes, read their output, and in turn output information such as number of updates completed, time remaining, time elapsed, and number of transfers per second. I started running the process last night and checked in this morning to see it had deadlocked. There were not subprocceses running, there are still records to be updated, and the script had not exited. It was simply sitting there, no longer outputting the current information because no subprocces were running to update the total number complete which is what controls updates to the output. This is running on OS X. I am looking for three things: I would like to get rid of the possibility of this deadlock occurring so I don't need to check in on it as frequently. Is there some issue with locking? Am I doing this in a bad way (gThreading variable to control looping of spawning additional thread... etc.) I would appreciate some suggestions for improving my overall methodology. How should I handle ctrl-c exit? Right now I need to kill the process, but assume I should be able to use the signal module or other to catch the signal and kill the threads, is that right? I am not sure whether I should be pasting my entire script here, since I usually just paste snippets. Let me know if I should paste it here as well.

E.g.   • How can I run a Perl program when I don't have ssh or shell access?

    I just installed an IRC bot, B****X (Don't ask, I don't know - the real name is not censored). I did all of the configuration and chmod'ed the pl files to 755, but running it won't work. My host does not allow SSH/Shell (which is how the documentation says to runs he script), but just going to the URL usually works because of this. However, I get a 500 (Internal Server Error) error.     I am trying to find the total number of lines added and total number of lines removed by a user in a git repository. I looked at http://stackoverflow.com/questions/1265040/how-to-count-total-lines-changed-by-a-specific-author-in-a-git-repository, which had the command git log --author="<authorname>" --pretty=tformat: --numstat, but the answer failed to give a script(however simple) to total the lines changed. What's the simplest way to sum up the lines added/removed?

  • Passing a panel widget to a function

    I have written a quite complex script which calls a server handler to refresh elements in a grid at the press of a button. For code re-use and consistent behaviour, I am wanting to call that server handler directly during the initial painting of the grid. When the server handler gets called by clicking on the button, all expected widgets are available and can be queried with e.parameter.widget etc. When I call the function directly and pass it the panel variable, the value of e is just 'AbsolutePanel'. Is there some way I can emulate the addCallbackElement way of passing the entire panel and all widgets it contains to the function? Or a way of automatically firing a server handler on script start? Please forgive any syntax errors below, I have pruned 500 lines of code down to the pertinent bits! However, no matter what values I enter in the fields; the result is always: array(2) { ["test"]=> string(0) "" ["action"]=> string(2) "Go" } string(16) "test=&action=Go&" Somehow, the array named test is emptied, the "action" variable does make it through. I've used the Live HTTP Headers extension for Firefox to check whether the POST fields get submitted, and they do. The relevant information from Live HTTP Headers (with a, b and c filled in as values in the textboxes): Content-Type: application/x-www-form-urlencoded Content-Length: 51 test%5B1%5D=a&test%5B2%5D=b&test%5B3%5D=c&action=Go Does anybody have any idea as to why this is happening? I'm freaking out on this one, it has cost me so much time already... EDIT: We've tried this on different servers, on Windows boxes it does work, on the Ubuntu server with PHP version 5.2.4 (with Suhosin), it doesn't. It even works on a different server, also with Ubuntu and the same PHP version, also with Suhosin installed.

  • C# WebBrowser.ShowPrintDialog() not showing

    I have this peculiar problem while wanting to print a html-report. The file itself is a normal local html file, located on my hard drive. To do this, I have tried the following: public static void PrintReport(string path) { WebBrowser wb = new WebBrowser(); wb.Navigate(path); wb.ShowPrintDialog() } And I have this form with a button with the click event: private void button1_Click(object sender, EventArgs e) { string path = @"D:\MyReport.html"; PrintReport(path); } This does absolutely nothing. Which is kind of strange... but things get stranger... When editing the print function to do the following: public static void PrintReport(string path) { WebBrowser wb = new WebBrowser(); wb.Navigate(path); MessageBox.Show("TEST"); wb.ShowPrintDialog() } It works. Yes, only adding a MessageBox. The MessageBox is showing and after it comes the print dialog. I have also tried with Thread.Sleep(1000) instead, which doesn't work. Can anyone explain to me what's going on here? Why would a messagebox make any difference? Can it be some kind of permission problem? I've reproduced this on both Windows 7 and 8, same thing. I made this small application with only the above code to isolate the problem. I am quite sure it works on windows XP though, since an older version of the application I'm working on runs on it. When trying to do this directly with the mshtml-dll instead I also get problems. Any input or clarification is greatly appreciated!

  • MVC Html.ActionLink not passing querystring properly

    This seems like it should be pretty straight forward, but I'm apparently confused. I have a List view that displays a paged list. At the bottom I have a set of actionlinks: <%= Html.ActionLink("First Page", "List", new { page = 1} ) %> &nbsp; <%= Html.ActionLink("Prev Page", "List", new { page = Model.PageNumber - 1 }) %> &nbsp; <%= Html.ActionLink("Next Page", "List", new { page = Model.PageNumber + 1 }) %> &nbsp; <%= Html.ActionLink("Last Page", "List", new { page = Model.LastPage } )%> I'm using the basic default routes setup, except with "List" substituted for "Index": routes.MapRoute( "Default", // Route name "{controller}/{action}/{id}", // URL with parameters new { controller = "Home", action = "List", id = UrlParameter.Optional } // Parameter defaults ); The problem is that the ActionLink helpers are generating links of the form: http://localhost:2083/Retrofit?page=2 rather than http://localhost:2083/Retrofit/?page=2 (with the trailing slash after the controller name & before the query string). When the first URL is routed, it completely loses the query string - if I look at Request.QueryString by the time it gets to the controller, it's null. If I enter the second URL (with the trailing slash), it comes in properly (i.e., QueryString of "page=2"). So how can I either get the ActionLink helper to generate the right URL, or get the Routing to properly parse what ActionLink is generating? Thanks.

  • Problems with jQuery getJSON using local files in Chrome

    I have a very simple test page that uses XHR requests with jQuery's $.getJSON and $.ajax methods. The same page works in some situations and not in others. Specificially, it doesn't work in Chrome on Ubuntu. I'm testing on Ubuntu 9.10 with Chrome 5.0.342.7 beta and Mac OSX 10.6.2 with Chrome 5.0.307.9 beta. It works correctly when files are installed on a web server from both Ubuntu/Chrome and Mac/Chrome (try it out here). It works correctly when files are installed on local hard drive in Mac/Chrome (accessed with file:///...). It FAILS when files are installed on local hard drive in Ubuntu/Chrome (access with file:///...). Can someone try it out locally on your Ubuntu system and tell me if you have any troubles? Note that it seems to be working fine in Firefox.

    I'm wondering if it's possible to conditionally add a parameter in a call to a method. For example, I am rendering a bunch of links (six total) for navigation in my Site.Master: <%= Html.ActionLink("About", "About", "Pages") %> | <%= Html.ActionLink("Contact", "Contact", "Pages") %> <%-- etc, etc. --%> I'd like to include a CSS class of "selected" for the link if it's on that page. So in my controller I'm returning this: ViewData.Add("CurrentPage", "About"); return View(); And then in the view I have an htmlAttributes dictionary: <% Dictionary<string,object> htmlAttributes = new Dictionary<string,object>(); htmlAttributes.Add("class","selected");%> Now my only question is how do I include the htmlAttributes for the proper ActionLink. I could do it this way for each link: <% htmlAttributes.Clear(); if (ViewData["CurrentPage"] == "Contact") htmlAttributes.Add("class","selected");%> <%= Html.ActionLink("Contact", "Contact", "Pages", htmlAttributes) %> But that seems a little repetitive. Is there some way to do something like this psuedo code: <%= Html.ActionLink("Contact", "Contact", "Pages", if(ViewData["CurrentPage"] == "Contact") { htmlAttributes }) %> That's obviously not valid syntax, but is there a correct way to do that? I'm open to any totally different suggestions for rendering these links. I'd like to stay with something like ActionLink that takes advantage of using my routes though instead of hard coding the tag.

  • HTML 5 Video OnEnded Event not Firing

    I'm trying to react to the HTML 5 onended event for the video tag without success. In the code snippet below I added the mouseleave event to be sure the jQuery code is correct and that event does activate the alert() box. The video plays just fine but onended does not cause my alert() to fire off.   • Focussing on Style Sheets and Cross Browser Compatibility.

    Hello everyone, Let me begin this topic by explaining my background experience with web design. I have always been more of a back end programmer, with PHP and SQL and things. However I do have a shallow background with HTML and CSS. The problem is, I don't know it all. What I do know is, when it comes to designing (not back end dirty work) I understand basic CSS properties and I also understand HTML and I can usually throw together a sloppy web page with the two and a couple bazillion DIV tags. Anyways.. The problem I always have encountered is that when I design a website in a browser such as IE7 (and then it looks perfect on IE7), and then look at it on IE8 or IE6 or Mozilla (etc.) it gets all spacey and ugly and looks totally different than the way it should look on IE7. Question one: Basically, what I am asking everyone is what route should I take to learn how to properly build the website? Build as in put it togehter with CSS standards and HTML standards that will make my site look the same on every brwoser. (Not only learning standards but where can I learn to properly write my code?) Where is a strong free resource I can use to learn how to these things? Question two: How do I properly code my website? Do I use all external style sheets to make dynamic page design simplistic or do I hard code some things into the DIV tags on each page? What is proper? Oh, and if anyone has any tutorials on how to properly design a complete layout feel free to throw it in a response somewhere. Thank you for taking the time to read my questions, and hopefully you will understand what I am trying to get out to everyone.     I am embedding a flash object into my site and when I do I get a message from dreamweaver saying "This page contains some swf objects that may not work correctly in the most recent versions of Internet Explorer.     Hi, I have a C# Winforms application which is calling a simple powershell script using the following method: Process process = new Process(); process.StartInfo.FileName = @"powershell.exe"; process.StartInfo.Arguments = String.Format("-noexit \"C:\Develop\{1}\"", scriptName); process.Start(); The powershell script simply reads a registry key and outputs the subkeys. $items = get-childitem -literalPath hklm:\software foreach($item in $items) { Write-Host $item } The problem I have is that when I run the script from the C# application I get one set of results, but when I run the script standalone (from the powershell command line) I get a different set of results entirely. The results from running from the c# app are: HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\software\Adobe HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\software\Business Objects HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\software\Helios HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\software\InstallShield HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\software\Macrovision HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\software\Microsoft HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\software\MozillaPlugins HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\software\ODBC HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\software\Classes HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\software\Clients HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\software\Policies HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\software\RegisteredApplications PS C:\Develop\RnD\SiriusPatcher\Sirius.Patcher.UI\bin\Debug When run from the powershell command line I get: PS M: C:\Develop\RegistryAccess.ps1 HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\software\ATI Technologies HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\software\Classes HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\software\Clients HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\software\Equiniti HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\software\Microsoft HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\software\ODBC HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\software\Policies HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\software\RegisteredApplications HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\software\Wow6432Node PS M: The second set of results match what I have in the registry, but the first set of results (which came from the c# app) don't.
