• Python: why does str() on some text from a UTF-8 file give a UnicodeDecodeError?

  I'm processing a UTF-8 file in Python, and have used simplejson to load it into a dictionary. However, I'm getting a UnicodeDecodeError when I try to turn one of the dictionary values into a string: f = open('my_json.json', 'r') master_dictionary = json.load(f) #some json wrangling, then it fails on this line... mysql_string += " ('" + str(v_dict['code']) Traceback (most recent call last): File "my_file.py", line 25, in <module> str(v_dict['code']) + "'), " UnicodeEncodeError: 'ascii' codec can't encode character u'\xf4' in position 35: ordinal not in range(128) Why is Python even using ASCII? I thought it used UTF-8 by default, and this is a UTF-8 file. What is the problem?

• Twitter Search API Question

  I'm using the twitter search API to get twitter posts based on some keywords, using AND and OR keyword. It works OK, but I seem to get problems using hashtags... For example : Not returning any results : http://search.twitter.com/search.json?q="%23ipad+AND+%23ipod"+OR+"%23joke+AND+%23funny"&rpp=100&callback=? Returning results : http://search.twitter.com/search.json?q="ipad+AND+ipod"+OR+"joke+AND+funny"&rpp=100&callback=? But there's results with #ipod AND #ipad because when I search only for #ipod, I can see a lot of posts with both hashtags. Example : http://search.twitter.com/search.json?q=%23ipad&rpp=100&callback=? P.S. %23 = # Any idea?

• Undefined method 'total_entries' after upgrading Rails 2.2.2 to 2.3.5

  I am upgrading a Rails application from 2.2.2 to 2.3.5. The only remaining error is when I invoke total_entries for creating a jqgrid. Now I am looking for a tutorial, book or PDF that teaches these advanced concepts. I am not looking for a "what's a monad" tutorial aimed at beginners or online references explaining the type of replicateM. I want to learn how to think in monads and use them effectively, monadic "patterns" if you will.

  Hi all ! I am a noob to web services world. I need to develop a login validator module and expose it as a service. I want it to be service independent, i.e I should have the option of exposing it as a SOAP service or REST service in the future. What pattern should I follow ? Sorry if I am unclear in my requirements, I can clarify as per need. Thanks !! Edit : I am using Eclipse as an IDE and Jersey libraries. I am not into any framework, simply using the MVC pattern. I find a lot of difference between SOAP ann REST methods, so I want my methods to be implementation independent - i.e I should be easily able to use my method through a SOAP or REST service call as per need. What should I do for maximum flexibility ?

  I have a problem with calling soap service from php page. I was implemented two page,first page was created in php, and second page was created in asp.net. In asp.net application I have SOAP service, which methods should be called from php. • C: Recursive function for inverting an int

  I had this problem on an exam yesterday. I couldn't resolve it so you can imagine the result... Make a recursive function: int invertint( int num) that will receive an integer and return it but inverted, example: 321 would return as 123 I wrote this: int invertint( int num ) { int rest = num % 10; int div = num / 10; if( div == 0 ) { return( rest ); } return( rest * 10 + invert( div ) ) } Worked for 2 digits numbers but not for 3 digits or more. Since 321 would return 1 * 10 + 23 in the last stage. Thanks a lot! PS: Is there a way to understand these kind of recursion problems in a faster manner or it's up to imagination of one self?

  I tried the validation example code for web api on the latest mvc 4 download and I'm getting some errors. Does anyone have an updated example of the ValidationActionFilter class. • JSONP parsing error from WCF

  Answered my own question I had a problem with a jquery (jsonp) call to a WCF service that was throwing a json parsing error. Using ASP.NET 4.0 on the WCF side and jquery 1.7 on the client side. Turned out there was an old set of script tags on the page using language = VBSCRIPT. The browser was interpreting the returned json packet of script as "VBscript" instead of javascript. I placed a set of empty javascript tags at the top of the page and the browser is now interpreting the json as the proper javascript function. Hope this helps someone else. Tom

  I currently have a jQuery ajax request set up like this $(document).ready( function() { $.ajax({ url : "http://www.my-computer.com:51000/getJson", cache : false, dataType: "json", success : renderPage, error: handleError }) }); If I manually naviate to http://www.my-computer.com:51000/getJson, I see it returns a json string correctly, but with the above request, I always fall into "handleError" method, with textStatus "error" and not much helpful information. Can anyone help? Thanks! EDIT: sorry about the my-computer domain. this stackoverflow submission won't let me input localhost, so I put in an arbitrary domain instead. I've tried firebug, but had no luck in getting the json back.

  my question is what potential problems or difficulties would be with implementing usual web app with somewhat reach user interface (multiple dynamic tabs, accordians and so on) using jQuery MVC approach with Spring REST vs using Spring MVC. Problems what I can think of could be: I will not be able to use Spring security fully, JavaScript coding could become hard to manage, any form verification becomes not easy to manage... what else? and does jQuery MVC with REST make sense at all? On other side jQuery with MVC and REST move all GUI concerns to JavaScript side (whether it is bad or not) and leave all data manipulation to server side.

Create New Project with Cocoa Touch Static Library named it By default i got single class with Demo.h and Demo.m. 2.Create a public function in .h and implement it in .m. 3.Select iOS Device and press cmd + B. 4.Copy Demo.a from products and the .h file drop it in my iOS App where i want to use it. 5.Then Import Demo.h and try to call the function that i wrote. I spent several hours figuring out why it happens and asked help from other people, but no one could really find out what is going on. One thing to note is, if I comment out this line: params = JSON.parse(request.env["rack.input"].read) then params has the correct value for "web-form" posting. Actually, the goal is to get the params value if this code is being called by CURL call, so I used: params = JSON.parse(request.env["rack.input"].read) but it messed up the web-form posting. Can anyone solve this mystery?

• Fastest method in merging of the two: dicts vs lists

  I'm doing some indexing and memory is sufficient but CPU isn't. So I have one huge dictionary and then a smaller dictionary I'm merging into the bigger one: big_dict = {"the" : {"1" : 1, "2" : 1, "3" : 1, "4" : 1, "5" : 1}} smaller_dict = {"the" : {"6" : 1, "7" : 1}} #after merging resulting_dict = {"the" : {"1" : 1, "2" : 1, "3" : 1, "4" : 1, "5" : 1, "6" : 1, "7" : 1}} My question is for the values in both dicts, should I use a dict (as displayed above) or list (as displayed below) when my priority is to use as much memory as possible to gain the most out of my CPU? For clarification, using a list would look like: big_dict = {"the" : [1, 2, 3, 4, 5]} smaller_dict = {"the" : [6,7]} #after merging resulting_dict = {"the" : [1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 7]} Side note: The reason I'm using a dict nested into a dict rather than a set nested in a dict is because JSON won't let me do json.dumps because a set isn't key/value pairs, it's (as far as the JSON library is concerned) {"a", "series", "of", "keys"} Also, after choosing between using dict to a list, how would I go about implementing the most efficient, in terms of CPU, method of merging them? I appreciate the help.

• Is there a way to test if a scalar has been stringified or not?

  I am writing a thing to output something similar to JSON, from a perl structure. I want the quoting to behave like this: "string" outputs "string" "05" outputs "05" "5" outputs "5" 5 outputs 5 05 outputs 5, or 05 would be acceptable JSON::XS handles this by testing if a scalar has been "stringified" or not, which I think is very cool. But I can't find a way to do this test myself without writing XS, which I'd rather avoid. Is this possible? I can't find this anywhere on CPAN without finding vast pedantry about Scalar::Util::looks_like_number, etc which completely isn't what I want. The only stopgap I can find is Devel::Peek, which feels evil. And also, just like JSON::XS, I'm fine with this secenario: my $a = 5; print $a."\n"; # now $a outputs "5" instead of 5)
