• Spikes of 99% disk activity in Windows 8 Task Manager

  For some reason Windows 8's Task Manager reports spikes of 99% disk activity for hours at a time. Looking at the entries in that column, however, data doesn't seem to be getting written any more quickly than when the disk activity is around 25-50% (which it seem to idle at most of the time). Furthermore, when these 99% disk activity spikes are happening, the average response time reported in the Performance tab becomes 4000-6000ms. Is there a good way to find out what is causing the disk activity? I've tried using Process Explorer, but I said above, the rate at which data is reportedly being written doesn't seem to correspond (Dropbox and Google Chrome are constantly the top two, but the spikes are not dependent on their being open). Thanks in advance for any help. It gets very annoying when the computer stutters to a halt.

  I got several computers connected to my home wireless network and I want to make use of some of the features of Windows 7 for home networks but I can't seem to get them working: How do I keep files and folders in sync between specific computers? I'm not talking about Live Sync. How can I stream to Windows Media Player from another computer? I would appreciate if someone could provide me some links / solutions that address my needs. Thanks! To anyone who thinks this question is a duplicate and wants to close it please bare in mind the following: I'm not looking for additional software, I know I can use Live Sync, Dropbox and so on but I'm asking this: how do I configure Windows 7 to sync files between my home network - no Internet required! This has something to do with shared folders and offline files in Windows 7, but I can't get it to work. • Adobe Illustrator can't open SVG file

  I have a generated SVG file which for some reason won't open in Adobe Illustrator when I serve the file content from my ASP.net application, but if I were to write this generated file directly to the file system from my ASP.net application, the file opens fine! I've put a zip of the two files here: http://dl.dropbox.com/u/1761973/Files.zip The zip has two files: Map.svg Test.svg Map.svg doesn't open in Illustrator, it shows up a Text Import Options dialog, and upon clicking OK, will show the XML content of the file. Test.svg opens fine in Illustrator. Doing a comparison of the two files yields NO DIFFERENCES whatsoever! There must be something different in these two files (caused by downloading the generated SVG from the web browser), but I have no idea what?

• Windows Explorer keeps crashing in Windows 8.1

  This started a few days ago on a machine that has been running WIn 8.1 for over a month. I just finished a clean install of Windows 8.1 with a handful of apps like Dropbox and Office. • Trouble downloading a file due to lack of permission

  After downloading this file: http://dl.dropbox.com/u/315/hon/hon_update.exe before it actually copies to my computer I get this error: File Access Denied <title of box> You need permission to perform this action. You require permission from the computer's administrator to make changes to this file. Within this box are to buttons: Try Again or Cancel I have searched other similar "permission" type questions, but they seem to all refer to existing files or folders. How do I give permission to a file which doesn't exist yet? (since it is in the process of downloading and hasn't finally copied over yet) I am running Windows 7 64 bit. I would be happy to supply any other information to help clarify.

• nTop RRD file architecture

  I have a gig of nTop RRD files and I would like to start graphing them with rrdtool (but not with nTop, since I'm hoping to do this with a separate backup of the database as workaround to the impossibility of limiting the RRD files by size), but I don't know how the files are structured. I've tried reading the RRD documentation from SourceForge and the nTop FAQ, but I'm not finding the information I need. Does anyone know of any documentation I should be looking at or how the files are structured? Here https://dl.dropbox.com/u/669437/file%20structure.png is a screenshot of the file structure. At first I thought it was organized by IP address (so the rrd files for address 1.1.2.3 would be stored in folder 1-1-2-3 or even the reverse order), but that doesn't seem to be the case. It isn't organized by MAC address either, although some hosts are saved that way. Any help would be appreciated.

• Strange. Asterisk key plays random Windows sound when pressed

  This is a new one on me. When I press the "asterisk", or * button on my number pad (but not SHIFT+8), Windows makes either a "Exclamation" or "Windows ding" sound. I haven't noticed a pattern to which sound is made. Logitech K200 keyboard No special key mapping software or Logitech software running Realtek sound to stereo through optical cable. Visual Studio 2010, Chrome, Fiddler, WinRAR, Notepad++, and Dropbox running. No unusual behavior otherwise. A solution isn't terribly important but my curiosity is both piqued and stumped. This doesn't normally happen and nothing odd has taken place otherwise. Ideas?

• Remote Desktop Client Crashes following domain join

  I recently joined my laptop to our windows domain and now the remote desktop client crashes when i try and connect to any machine. It works if I run as administrator but not ordinarily. The domain join migrated my local profile to the domain profile which i think is where the problem lies. I'm guessing its a permission thing as I had a similar problem with dropbox and had to delete reg keys and reinstall. I can't figure out how to fix this problem though. • Sync files between Mac, PC and Linux automatically

  Hello everyone- I have a MacBook Pro, a Windows 7 desktop, and a Fedora 13 netbook. I have been searching far and wide for an automatic solution to sync files (pictures, music, docs, etc...) between the three when they are all on the same LAN. To better explain, when I get home and turn my MacBook on, I want it to sync automatically any file changes to Windows 7 and the netbook. Likewise if I make changes on my Windows 7 box, I want them to be reflected on my Mac. I can use rsync, but it is not automatic as far as I can tell, and I would use Dropbox but I have a lot more that 2 gigs and do not want to pay. I also do not need internet syncing. I just want local LAN. Does anyone have any ideas? Thank you very much in advance.

• Copy iMovie 11 project from one account to another user account?

  I have one user account as admin with several iMovie projects. After a period of time, I created a standard user account. Now I want to move admin user's iMovie projects to standard user. What I tried was to copy admin's Movies folder content to standard user by dropping to standard user's public shared dropbox. Then I copied the content to standard user's Movies folder. However, I cannot see iMovie projects in standard user by iMovie app. Is there anyway to move projects from one user to another user? Or copy one user's data to another user? Not sure if I missed anything if just copying Movies folder?

• WHEA_UNCORRECTABLE_ERROR BSOD - what is wrong?

  Hello I have a problem with my PC getting the WHEA_UNCORRECTABLE_ERROR bsod. It is a few months old pc. I am not overclocking or changing anything in bios, but sometimes (this is my third time) I get this bsod out of nowhere. This last time I was just watching some stream on twitch when the pc suddenly crashed. I have everything up to date in windows update and every other driver as well. Everything in Open hardware Monitor seems ok. Right now as of 10 min after the crash, the CPU temp is at 38°C, fans are at 1400RPM I am using Windows 8.1 Pro 64b. • Windows 2003 Enterprise Server becomes unresponsive occasionally

  We're experiencing issues with our Windows 2003 server, which runs SQL Server 2005 SP1. We notice that sometimes the entire server becomes unresponsive and I captured a screenshot of the task manager when this happened. I noticed that the processes are not displayed during this time and all of the memory information and handles disappear (as shown in the screenshot). Does anyone have any ideas as to what could be wrong with this sytem? I'm planning to take it down over the weekend to run Memtest86. • What is a good and safe way of sharing certificates?

  I have a few certificates, that are used as authentication, to ssh into my servers on the Amazon cloud. I rotate those certificates weekly, manually. My question is, I need to share the certificates with some colleagues, a few on the LAN, and a few in another part of the country. What is the best practice to share the certificate? My initial thoughts were Dropbox and email. We dont host dedicated email servers with encryption and all, and dont have a VPN. Thanks.

• windows 7 crash during hibernation

  At times, when I hibernate my Dell Latitude e6400 with Windows 7 (64 bit), the laptop screen goes black as it should, but then it takes several minutes before it powers down. Then, when I attempt to "resume," Windows boots up from a fresh startup, with all my work lost, and tells me that it's recovered from a serious error. What can I do to resolve this problem? Other background info: -I got a new hard drive with plenty of space about a year ago; I only use a small fraction of that space. This sometimes happens when I don't have any programs running at all. If it's relevant, I do have Dropbox and OneDrive running in the background, though. -The problem usually occurs when I hibernate just after I unplug from an external monitor to bring my laptop home, but I believe it happens at other times, too. • refile a table row in emacs org mode

This works just fine. The I wanted to refile the To View table line to a table with the headline "Viewed" using this (setq org-refile-targets '(("mystuff.org" :regexp . "Viewed") But what org mode does is takes the whole table rather than the url on the row I want to refile, and puts the To View table under the Viewed table. Obviously not what I want. Is there a way to do what I want?

• On a Mac, how are connections (possibly by spyware) made to outside internet addresses during initia

  I am trying to secure a Mac after discovering that network links are being established to some unwanted internet sites. Using 'lsof -i' (list open 'files', internet) I have seen that launchd, ntpd, firefox, dropbox and other processes are either 'LISTENING' or have 'ESTABLISHED' links to a site or sites which I suspect have to do with spyware. I have been trying to find startup files and preference lists that initiate thise links but can't find them. I could easily reinstall the OS and restore data from a backup but I'd prefer to know how to fix this as I have six Macs to look after. Thanks...

• Avoid Powerpoint(/Word) 2010 creating temporary files in working directory

  When opening a temporary file, Powerpoint 2010 usually creates a temporary, hidden file called ~$filename.pptx in the same directory. This is undesirable, since it can cause unnecessary activity with e.g. Dropbox. Furthermore, the "Documents" folder should not be used for temporary files -- we have the %TEMP% folder for that. So, is it possible to have Powerpoint create its temporary files in %TEMP% instead? • Why is my Mac beeping at me in a Sprint-Nextel-PTT kind of way?

  I'm really stumped about this one. Before on OSX 10.5 and now on OSX 10.6, my Mac occasionally beeps at me. It's a split-second "bee-bee-beep" that sounds vaguely similar to the push-to-talk beep you hear on Sprint/Nextel PTT commercials. I haven't been able to isolate what's running when it happens or what happens before it happens. Possible culprits are Quicksilver, Firefox, DropBox, Evernote helper, TrueCrypt, Wally. Any thoughts? • rsync creating thousands of ..ds_store files from mounted volume

  I've been using rsync on OS X to sync all our website admins. It was working fine until the OS X 10.6.3 update! Now it creates thousands of empty (0-kb) folders. It only does it when synching to a mounted network drive (which we need to do) as when I sync to my local drive it works as usual! • Filesystem access through web interface

  I have an SSH+Samba server so people can access its files from anywhere on the network. I thought it would be also interesting to provide access through a web interface, so they can access the files even when they don't have access to the VPN or a Samba/SSH client. Something like the Ubuntu One or Dropbox web interface. The http server could be on the same machine as the SSH+Samba, so it should just provide access to local files and some way to login with their username/password. Someone knows any software like this?

  Is there an easy way to have my work laptop connect to a home workgroup for file sharing with my other PCs, but then easily switch back to connecting to my work domain when I'm at work? I have the following setup: Windows 7 Home Premium Server/HTPC 2 Windows XP laptops 1 Vista laptop (Work) The work laptop connects to a work domain, the remaining computers are on a home workgroup for sharing files/printer. Also is it possible to share files over my LAN while I'm connected to the work domain, but at home? I've tried Live Mesh, but my 2 home laptops are very slow and don't work well with it. I also use Dropbox, but I'd like to be able to share larger files. I may be missing a simple solution here...

• Debian Server Daemon: File sync

  Hello, I'm looking for a way to (auto) sync files on some pcs over the internet and save/backup them on my server. Just like Dropbox and other services like that. I found iFolder (by Novell), but it's not made for debian (i think it would still compile). I don't know if it's made for an webserver or just home server. Another way would be FTP, I don't know clients (i use ubuntu and windows on my pcs), which autoupload new/edited files. There is also svn/csv, but they are quite slow (afaik), and I don't know if there are suited for this. Someone got an idea? Thanks.

• Routing to a Terminal Services Cluster

  I am trying to connect to a Load Balanced Windows 2008 R2 cluster using Remote Desktop Services. I have no trouble connecting to the the Servers' IP addresses (.253.16 and .253.17) or the Cluster address (.253.20) from inside the subnet (.253). The trouble is when I try to connect from the other subnet(.251). I can remote to the other non-clustered servers (.253.12 and .253.15) inside the .253 subnet from the .251 without an issue. I receive a ping reply from the cluster and other servers when I am on the .251 subnet. But when I try to connect via remote desktop it times out but only to any of the IPs on the cluster (.20,.17,.16). • Mountable online storage (no syncing)

  I have a Linux VPS that I would like to turn into a media server. Like most cheap VPS's, it has a fairly small storage capacity. What I would like to do is attach the box to an online backup system such as SpiderOak or DropBox, where the files would reside and be directly accessible to either a webserver or media server software. Since the VPS hdd is small, I do not want the files to be synced to it. I would like a storage system that is online only. Ideally mountable like a network drive. Are there any services that suit my needs, or workarounds for services such as SpiderOak that do not require syncing?
