  • How does Alpha Five Version 10 Rate for Web App Development

    - by Gary B2312321321
    I came across this RDMS via the advert on stackoverflow. Seems to be in the vein of MS Access / Filemaker / Apex database development tools but focused on web based applications. It quotes rave reviews from EWeek and a favourable mention from Dr Dobbs regarding its ability to create AJAX web applications without coding. The Eweek review, apparently written by an ASP.NET programmer, goes on to proclaim the ease at which apps can be extended using the inbuilt XBasic language and how custom javascript can easily be added without wading through code. Has anyone here built a web app with Alpha 5? Does anyone have comments on the development process, the speed of it or limitations they encountered along the way? To me it seems Oracle APEX comes closest to the feature set, has anyone programmed in both and have any comments?

  • how to keep dragged TitleWindow within Flex app boundary

    - by Tim
    I am using PopupManager in FB4 to display a custom dialog. popwin = new TitleWindow(); popwin.addElement(myCustomDialog); PopUpManager.addPopUp(popwin,this,false); PopUpManager.centerPopUp(popwin); It's possible to drag the popped up TitleWindow and let go of it when its gray title bar lies outside the bounds of the Flex app rectangle, and then the popup cannot be grabbed again. It's also possible to drag the TitleWindow downwards so it becomes completely invisible below the bottom edge of the Flex app rectangle. When the Flex app bounds are less than the full browser window, and the user is working quickly, this chances of this happening increase. Is there a simple setting that will keep this from happening, or must the programmer intercept the behavior during the drag operation? Thanks Tim

  • Basic Recursion, Check Balanced Parenthesis

    - by pws5068
    Greetings all, I've written software in the past that uses a stack to check for balanced equations, but now I'm asked to write a similar algorithm recursively to check for properly nested brackets and parenthesis. Good examples: () [] () ([]()[]) Bad examples: ( (] ([)] Suppose my function is called: isBalanced. Should each pass evaluate a smaller substring (until reaching a base case of 2 left)? Or, should I always evaluate the full string and move indices inward?

  • FireBird .net provider 64bit

    - by Lavinski
    I'm trying to get a firebird web application (IIS6 64 bit) to run. However I'm getting bad image format (bit difference incompatability) issues. Has anyone got any advice to get it running. Details AnyCPU application references the .net firebird driver (through nhibernate) which uses a native 64bit dll. There is a native 32bit dll which I use for local development and it works fine. (I havn't got the 32 version working on the 64 bit server either).

    - by Jason
    I am passing the reference of name to *mod_name*, I modify the referenced object from within the method but the change is not visible outside of the method, if I am referring to the same object from all locations how come the value is different depending on where I reference it? name = "Jason" puts name.object_id #19827274 def mod_name(name) puts name.object_id #19827274 name = "JasonB" end puts name.object_id #19827274 puts name #Jason String might be a bad example, but I get the same result even if I use a Fixnum.

  • Learning OOP Design

    - by waiwai933
    I've read Head First Java, and I understand how OOP works. Here's my problem: I'm a PHP programmer, and while I've used OOP in PHP, I'm having trouble figuring out what should be an object and what methods to give it. For example, let's say I have a app that allows people to log in and edit a document. Why should the document be an object if there will ever only be one instance? Should I give the deleteDocument() method to the document object or the admin object? The document is the one being deleted, but the admin is the one performing the action. So my real question is, coming from a procedural background, how do I figure out what should be objects and what should have what methods?

  • tmpfile and gzip combination problem

    - by Vojtech R.
    I have problem with this code: file = tempfile.TemporaryFile(mode='wrb') file.write(base64.b64decode(data)) file.flush() os.fsync(file) # file.seek(0) f = gzip.GzipFile(mode='rb', fileobj=file) print f.read() I dont know why it doesn't print out anything. If I uncomment file.seek then error occurs: File "/usr/lib/python2.5/gzip.py", line 263, in _read self._read_gzip_header() File "/usr/lib/python2.5/gzip.py", line 162, in _read_gzip_header magic = self.fileobj.read(2) IOError: [Errno 9] Bad file descriptor Just for information this version works fine: x = open("test.gzip", 'wb') x.write(base64.b64decode(data)) x.close() f = gzip.GzipFile('test.gzip', 'rb') print f.read()

  • How long should it take a senior developer to solve FizzBuzz during an interview?

    - by Jim McKeeth
    Assuming: Typical interview stress levels (I am watching) Using familiar IDE and program language (their choice on their PC!) Given adequate explanation and immediate answers to questions Able to compile code and check answers / progress Claims to be a senior level programmer How long should it take an interviewee to answer FizzBuzz correctly? Edit: FizzBuzz: Write a program that prints the numbers from 1 to 100. But for multiples of three print "Fizz" instead of the number and for the multiples of five print "Buzz". For numbers which are multiples of both three and five print "FizzBuzz". Edit: It isn't so much that if they take more then X minutes they are disqualified, but I am curious if I should just cut them loose after they work on it for half hour.

  • C#/MonoDevelop: GTK MessageDialogs require a doubleclick to close - why?

    - by Connel
    I'm a newbie programmer writting a program in MonoDevelop in C# and have a porblem with my gtk MessageDialogs. The close button on the window boarders of my GTK Message dialogues require a double click to actually close them. The close button on the dialogue its self works fine. Could someone please tell me how I can fix this below is the code: if (fchDestination.CurrentFolder == fchTarget.CurrentFolder) { MessageDialog msdSame = new MessageDialog(this, DialogFlags.Modal, MessageType.Error, ButtonsType.Close, "Destination directory cannot be the same as the target directory"); msdSame.Title="Error"; if ((ResponseType) msdSame.Run() == ResponseType.Close) { msdSame.Destroy(); } return; } if (fchTarget.CurrentFolder.StartsWith(fchDestination.CurrentFolder)) { MessageDialog msdContains = new MessageDialog(this, DialogFlags.Modal, MessageType.Error, ButtonsType.Close, "error"); msdContains.Title="Error"; if ((ResponseType) msdContains.Run() == ResponseType.Close) { msdContains.Destroy(); } return; }

  • Programming tests: are they relevant?

    - by BlackVoid
    Do online programming tests have any value (except for providing an evidence to potential employers) in terms of evaluating your knowledge, or a they too broad or too narrow in general? For examples, brainbench.com and similar websites. From my experience I have never found myself scoring particularly high, although I have many years of commercial experience and is doing great at work. These tests mostly refer to things I have never worked with (WebForms or ADO .Net, who works with ADO .Net directly anyway?), yet these tests claim to be C# tests. If you were hiring a programmer, would you consider online tests as an evidence of real skill?

  • How would you fool your boss, if you needed to? [closed]

    - by Starx
    Even as a programmer myself, I am not always in mood of coding, so I think of a way to fool my boss and GET GOING..... (if you know what I mean). Like one time I wanted to go home early, I said to my boss, "Sir, I have a check up, I need to meet my doctor at 12:00 pm today". And I was out of there Well, I am doing this, so I thought others might also have done something like this or wanted to do something like this. So, How about sharing them?

  • Good .NET based CMS?

    - by rAm
    For many projects we had to choose a CMS platform. I came across a few CMS platforms based on .NET. I want to know your experience. Community Server (cannot be called a true CMS) DotNetNuke (DNN) Umbraco Kentico Sitefinity Can you please touch upon the following points: UI customization. Feature extension. Third party extensions Support And most important: how much time it takes to learn, as a programmer and someone who manages the application with little or no programming knowledge. Update: thanks for all the responses, I have seen the other thread but did not get a satisfactory reply addressing the Support and Time? (which I forgot to add earlier).

  • Is it feasible to write a Firefox plugin to make use of ActiveX control on Windows?

    - by Gary B2312321321
    I use an ActiveX control called TAPIEx enabling TAPI phone system integration using MS Access 2000 (+Visual Basic). I want to turn this Access database into a web app with the clients running Firefox (all on internal network). Since Firefox doesnt support ActiveX is it feasible for me to write a Firefox plugin that in turn utilizes the ActiveX control? With regard to how plugins work - Would I be able to call 'functions' of the plugin from page script (eg dial call specifying phone number, check if calls in process)? Would adding these functions to the Firefox right click menu 'globally' inside Firefox be easier? Hope you guys can help. Note I'm not a fulltime programmer; I just need to know how steep the learning curve will be or even if my idea is possible! Ive now found a project to allow using activex controls in firefox that seems to be quite up to date at: http://code.google.com/p/ff-activex-host/

  • What is this technique called in Java?

How is it useful? class Application { ... public void run() { View v = createView(); v.display(); ... protected View createView() { return new View(); } ... } class ApplicationTest extends TestCase { MockView mockView = new MockView(); public void testApplication { Application a = new Application() { <--- protected View createView() { <--- return mockView; <--- whao, what is this? } <--- }; <--- a.run(); mockView.validate(); } private class MockView extends View { boolean isDisplayed = false; public void display() { isDisplayed = true; } public void validate() { assertTrue(isDisplayed); } } }

  • What's an appropriate HTTP status code to return by a REST API service for a validation failure?

    - by michaeljoseph
    I'm currently returning 401 Unauthorized whenever I encounter a validation failure in my Django/Piston based REST API application. Having had a look at the HTTP Status Code Registry I'm not convinced that this is an appropriate code for a validation failure, what do y'all recommend? 400 Bad Request 401 Unauthorized 403 Forbidden 405 Method Not Allowed 406 Not Acceptable 412 Precondition Failed 417 Expectation Failed 422 Unprocessable Entity 424 Failed Dependency Update: "Validation failure" above means an application level data validation failure ie. incorrectly specified datetime, bogus email address etc.

  • sending mail using mutt + emacs

    - by lakshmipathi
    How to sent mail from emacs? I have add from address and subject and trapped inside emacs I found this There are two ways to send the message. C-c C-s (mail-send) sends the message and marks the mail buffer unmodified, but leaves that buffer selected so that you can modify the message (perhaps with new recipients) and send it again. C-c C-c (mail-send-and-exit) sends and then deletes the window or switches to another buffer But both ( ctrl+c ctrl+s ) and (ctrl-c crtl+c) are not working ps:Thought it's not programming related. it's programmer environment related question-hoping it won't be closed :)

  • Space-based architecture?

    - by rcampbell
    One chapter in Pragmatic Programmer recommends looking at a blackboard/space-based architecture + a rules engine as a more flexible alternative to a traditional workflow system. The project I'm working on currently uses a workflow engine, but I'd like to evaluate alternatives. I really feel like a SBA would be a better solution to our business problems, but I'm worried about a total lack of community support/user base/venders/options. JavaSpaces is dead, and the JINI spin-off Apache River seems to be on life support. SemiSpace looks perfect, but it's a one-man show. The only viable solution seems to be GigaSpaces. I'd like to hear your thoughts on space based architecture and any experiences you've had with real world implementations.

  • get the time offset from GMT from latitude longitude

    - by ravun
    Is there a way to estimate the offset from GMT (or time zone) from a latitude/longitude? I've seen geonames, but this would need to work long term and we don't really want to rely on a web service. It'd just be used for determining whether to display "today" or "tonight" when giving information to various users so it wouldn't need to be too accurate (an hour or two off wouldn't be bad).

  • JBoss Seam - order event listeners

    - by Walter White
    Hi all, I would like to order my event listeners. Is it possible to do this in JBoss Seam 2.x? I am thinking as a workaround, which is quite simple, I will just daisy chain my events: fire event A. do something on event A. a. fire event B do something on event B. Any comments with this design? Is this a good / bad practice? Thanks, Walter
