• Python lists/arrays: disable negative indexing wrap-around

  While I find the negative number wraparound (i.e. A[-2] indexing the second-to-last element) extremely useful in many cases, there are often use cases I come across where it is more of an annoyance than helpful, and I find myself wishing for an alternate syntax to use when I would rather disable that particular behaviour. Here is a canned 2D example below, but I have had the same peeve a few times with other data structures and in other numbers of dimensions. import numpy as np A = np.random.randint(0, 2, (5, 10)) def foo(i, j, r=2): '''sum of neighbours within r steps of A[i,j]''' return A[i-r:i+r+1, j-r:j+r+1].sum() In the slice above I would rather that any negative number to the slice would be treated the same as None is, rather than wrapping to the other end of the array. Because of the wrapping, the otherwise nice implementation above gives incorrect results at boundary conditions and requires some sort of patch like: def ugly_foo(i, j, r=2): def thing(n): return None if n < 0 else n return A[thing(i-r):i+r+1, thing(j-r):j+r+1].sum() I have also tried zero-padding the array or list, but it is still inelegant (requires adjusting the lookup locations indices accordingly) and inefficient (requires copying the array). Am I missing some standard trick or elegant solution for slicing like this? I noticed that python and numpy already handle the case where you specify too large a number nicely - that is, if the index is greater than the shape of the array it behaves the same as if it were None.

• python recursive iteration exceeding limit for tree implementation

  I'm implementing a tree dynamically in python. I have defined a class like this... class nodeobject(): def __init__(self,presentnode=None,parent=None): self.currentNode = presentnode self.parentNode = parent self.childs = [] I have a function which gets possible childs for every node from a pool def findchildren(node, childs): # No need to write the whole function on how it gets childs Now I have a recursive function that starts with the head node (no parent) and moves down the chain recursively for every node (base case being the last node having no children) def tree(dad,children): for child in children: childobject = nodeobject(child,dad) dad.childs.append(childobject) newchilds = findchildren(child, children) if len(newchilds) == 0: lastchild = nodeobject(newchilds,childobject) childobject.childs.append(lastchild) loopchild = copy.deepcopy(lastchild) while loopchild.parentNode != None: print "last child" else: tree(childobject,newchilds) The tree formation works for certain number of inputs only. Once the pool gets bigger, it results into "MAXIMUM RECURSION DEPTH EXCEEDED" I have tried setting the recursion limit with set.recursionlimit() and it doesn't work. THe program crashes. I want to implement a stack for recursion, can someone please help, I have gone no where even after trying for a long time ?? Also, is there any other way to fix this other than stack ?

• Method returns an IDisposable - Should I dispose of the result, even if it's not assigned to anythin

  This seems like a fairly straightforward question, but I couldn't find this particular use-case after some searching around. Suppose I have a simple method that, say, determines if a file is opened by some process. I can do this (not 100% correctly, but fairly well) with this: public bool IsOpen(string fileName) { try { File.Open(fileName, FileMode.Open, FileAccess.Read, FileShare.None); } catch { // if an exception is thrown, the file must be opened by some other process return true; } } (obviously this isn't the best or even correct way to determine this - File.Open throws a number of different exceptions, all with different meanings, but it works for this example) Now the File.Open call returns a FileStream, and FileStream implements IDisposable. Normally we'd want to wrap the usage of any FileStream instantiations in a using block to make sure they're disposed of properly. But what happens in the case where we don't actually assign the return value to anything? Is it still necessary to dispose of the FileStream, like so: try { using (File.Open(fileName, FileMode.Open, FileAccess.Read, FileShare.None)); { /* nop */ } } catch { return true; } Should I create a FileStream instance and dispose of that? try { using (FileStream fs = File.Open(fileName, FileMode.Open, FileAccess.Read, FileShare.None)); } ... Or are these totally unnecessary? Can we simply call File.Open and not assign it to anything (first code example), and let the GC dispose of it right away?

• How would I make this faster? Parsing Word/sorting by heading [on hold]

• Is a python dictionary the best data structure to solve this problem?

  Hi I have a number of processes running which are controlled by remote clients. A tcp server controls access to these processes, only one client per process. The processes are given an id number in the range of 0 - n-1. Were 'n' is the number of processes. I use a dictionary to map this id to the client sockets file descriptor. On startup I populate the dictionary with the ids as keys and socket fd of 'None' for the values, i.e no clients and all pocesses are available When a client connects, I map the id to the sockets fd. When a client disconnects I set the value for this id to None, i.e. process is available. So everytime a client connects I have to check each entry in the dictionary for a process which has a socket fd entry of None. If there are then the client is allowed to connect. This solution does not seem very elegant, are there other data structures which would be more suitable for solving this? Thanks

• .htaccess redirect noticably increasing load time

  I set up a SEF link via .htaccess RewriteRule to one of the articles on my website just to see how that works, and it does work but it considerably increases the load time of that particular page. On average the articles (including the one I'm talking about, when not using the rewrite rule) load in about 1.3 seconds. With the rewrite rule, the load time is 3.3 seconds on average until the page displays, and the loader thingy in the firefox tab keeps spinning for another 2 seconds. I have WAMP setup on my computer, and the website is being accessed through no-ip.com. Here is the .htaccess config (very simple, as you can see): Options +FollowSymLinks RewriteEngine On RewriteCond %{REQUEST_FILENAME} !-f RewriteCond %{REQUEST_FILENAME} !-d RewriteRule ^o-sw-liji /NewSWL/o-nama.php?body=o-sw-liji In httpd.conf I have this (somewhere I read this might affect the load time for some reason - searching for files through all the directories or something, I don't remember exactly what I read): <Directory /> Options None AllowOverride None Order deny,allow Deny from all </Directory> DocumentRoot "Z:/Program Files (x86)/wamp/www/" <Directory "Z:/Program Files (x86)/wamp/www/"> Options None AllowOverride All Order allow,deny Allow from all </Directory> Any ideas why .htaccess redirect increases the load time by so much? UPDATE: so I put a session based counter in the "o-nama.php" script. Apparently when I access the web via the 'normal' link i.e. 'o-nama.php?body=o-sw-liji', the counter increases by one, as it should - it's one page load. But when the page is accessed through the redirected link, i.e. 'o-nama/o-sharewood-liji' the counter increases by 6-8, which naturally makes the load time a lot longer, since it's loading the same page for 6-8 times. I have no idea why this is happening. Any help is appreciated.

• linked list problem (with insert)

  The problem appears with the insert function that I wrote. 3 conditions must work, I tested b/w 1 and 2, b/w 2 and 3 and as last element, they worked. But b/w 3 and 4, it did not work.   Hi, I need to position this update button on www.euroworker.no/order (you'll have to add an item to the cart, use the Kjøp button to add and Handlevogn to view the cart). Works in FF and IE. (Although there is another alignment problems with IE) but not in Chrome or Safari. I had it working before, but the only thing I can think of to do is target safari and Chrome. Is this possible? • Python threading question (Working with a method that blocks forever)

  I am trying to wrap a thread around some receiving logic in python. Basically we have an app, that will have a thread in the background polling for messages, the problem I ran into is that piece that actually pulls the messages waits forever for a message. Making it impossible to terminate... I ended up wrapping the pull in another thread, but I wanted to make sure there wasn't a better way to do it. • Show/Hide divs with same class - jquery

  Hello, I have 1 div that will contain 3-5 divs with the same class. Below the div is an anchor. I would like for when this anchor is clicked it will hide the first div and then show the second. Another click would show the next and so on. I have set display:none on all divs but the first so only one is currently showing. I just can't figure out how to hide the first and then show the second, then third, then next when clicking the anchor. <div class="container-div"> <div class="inner-div">...</div> <div class="inner-div" style="display:none;">...</div> <div class="inner-div" style="display:none;">...</div> <a href="#" class="more">More</a> </div> So when the more anchor is clicked it would show one inner-div one at a time.   I am having a problem with sIFR 3 not displaying in IE. I get 3 larges black XXX in IE yet it displays fine in Firefox. I have checked i do have the most recent version of flash installed correctly.   I have a big problem with installing a certificat for nginx (same happends with apache though) I have 3 files __domain_com.crt __domain_com.ca-bundle and ssl.key.
