  • Create Windows SBS 2008 User Account without Email

    Just today I've been handed an SBS 2008 server to do some maintenance on. I've never used SBS 2008 before today, so this is a real noob question: Is it possible to create a user account without creating an associated exchange mailbox? I've been asked to create a new user, but not give them an email address. I guess I could just disable their email account in Exchange, but is there a nicer method?

  • JAVA Classes in Game programming.

    I'm doing a little strategy game to help me learn Java in a fun way. The thing is I visioned the units as objects that would self draw on the game map (using images and buffering) and would react to the mouse actions with listeners attached to them. Now, based on some tutorials I've been reading regarding basic game programming, all seems to be drawn in the Graphics method of my Map class. If a new unit emerges, i just update the Map.Graphics method, it's not as easy as making a new Unit object which would self draw... In this case, I'd be stuck with a whole bunch of Map methods instead of using classes for rendering new things. So my question is, is it possible to use classes for rendering units, interface objects, etc, or i'll have to create methods and just do some kind of structural programming instead of object oriented? I'm a little bit confused and I'd like to have a mental blueprint of how things would be organized. Thanks!

  • How to store a user's password to another web application

    I'm building a web application that shows users interesting visualizations of their Gmail activity (who they're emailing the most, etc). Obviously the user needs to give me his Gmail password to use the application, and I'm wondering how I should store it: Store the Gmail password in plaintext. Risky! Don't store the Gmail password at all; force the user to enter it every time he wants to sync data. Potentially inconvenient! Encrypt the Gmail password before storing it. The user's password to my application is the key. Something like (3) seems best, but with (3) I can only sync data when the user logs in (since I won't know his password to my application at any other time), which isn't ideal. I'd prefer a Mint.com-like solution whereby the user can click a button to sync data from Gmail at any time without re-entering his password (any idea how Mint accomplishes this without storing your banking passwords?)

But I cant figure out the error in this piece: This code comes from a general-purpose Java tracing suite. The function writes a string to a log file. It passes its unit test, but fails when one of the Web developers uses it. What coincidence does it rely on? public static void debug(String s) throws IOException { FileWriter fw = new FileWriter("debug.log", true); fw.write(s); fw.flush(); fw.close(); } What is wrong about this?

  • How to exercise and feel well when programming?

    While I'm sitting here in my expensive chair which was told to me were gonna help me with my neck and shoulder pains; it didn't. So don't go spend $2,000 on a chair because it's not gonna help. I am trying everything to keep my body in shape, exercising to keep my pizza-body slim and just to feel well in general. What I'd like to do is take a couple of seconds, maybe when the code compiles, to reach up, do a couple of X and feel good. But, what is this X? When I sit there at work, what will everyone think when I stand up and start to hula hula because I want to exercise my basin? I know a lot of programmers out there do have pain so let's come up with a little list together to help us all keep our joints feeling good. Programming gives me joint pain, how do i avoid it without quitting programming?

  • How do I re-enable fast user switching

    I am running Windows7 RC1, I have recently installed CheckPoint VPN SecureClient (http://www.checkpoint.com/products/vpn-1_clients/) to connect to my work network. On installation this appears to have disabled Fast User Switching. You will notice "Switch user" is now greyed out. I tried some googleing first and the most popular solution is to remove a registry entry at HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE \ SOFTWARE \ Microsoft \ Windows NT \ CurrentVersion \ Winlogon \ GinaDLL I have no entry there. Any ideas? Thanks.

    I would appreciate some help debugging my windows 2008 profile service. Any domain account that logs on to my 2008 machine gets a +- 20 second waiting time on "user profile service" I am using roaming profiles, they are around 8mb in size, and most folders are already redirected to a network share. event log registers no errors, there is more than 1 network card installed, but I have the correct card listed as "primary" Is there any way to increase verbosity of logging on specifically the "user profile service" ?     I'm developing a web app and I've come to a fork in the road with respect to database structure and I don't know which direction to take. I have a database with user information that I can structure one of two ways. The first is to create a schema and a set of tables for each user (duplicating the structure for each user) and the second is to create a single set of tables and query information based on user-id. Suppose 100000 users. Here are my questions: Considering security, performance, scalability and administration where does each choice lie? Would the answers change for 1000000 or 10000? Is there a set of best practices that lead to one choice or the other? It seems to me that multiple schemas are more secure since it's trivial to restrict user privileges but what about performance and scalability? Administration seems like a wash since dumping (and restoring) lots of schemas isn't any more difficult than dumping a few.

    Hi, I have to import big xml files to Ms SQL 2005 Database by using C# with high end Performance. Even if any record fails in middle, i have to take next record for process and failed record need to log for audit. I don't want to put insert query with in for loop. Could you please suggest a best way to do this. If I can use bulkcopy methods or Data Adapter update methods- Its very nice, But if any record fails, execution of that statement breaks and rolled back totally, right?     Hi, I'm surprised this question hasn't come up. Couldn't find much on the web. Using Entry.objects.latest('created_at') I can recover the latest entry for all Entry objects, but say if I want the latest entry for each user? This is something similar to an SQL latest record query. But how do I achieve this using the ORM? Here is my approach I'm wondering if it is the most efficient way to do what I want. First I perform a sub query: Objects are grouped by user and the Max (latest) created_by field is returned for each user (created_at__max) I then filter Entry objects based on the results in the subquery and get the required objects. Entry.objects.filter(created_at__in=Entry.objects.values('user').annotate(Max('created_at')).values_list('created_at__max')) or using a manager: class UsersLatest(models.Manager): def get_query_set(self): return Super(UsersLatest,self).get_query_set().filter(created_at__in=self.model.objects.values('user').annotate(Max('created_at')).values_list('created_at__max')) Is there a more efficient way? possibly without sub query?   • Facebook dotnet app - not finding any user info

    I am just starting to learn how to create a facebook app. I am using the MS dotnet libraries. Following this example and info: http://fbtutorial.qsh.eu/section1/fbml/step6.aspx I added some code in the default.aspx to print out the user name - but I am not getting any user information back. I understand that some user information is available even if the application is not authorized, such as name or user id. Example this code returns u=null: Facebook.Schema.user u = Master.Api.Users.GetInfo(); And this returns 0: this.Master.Api.Session.UserId Any suggestions as to why no information is getting returned? What sites do you frequent that you have found good participation from a smart group of people where you can ask questions that are related to software, but not programming problems? This community also has a vast depth of knowledge about things related to software like marketing, graphics/UI, running a small business, working in bad jobs, etc. that would greatly benefit everyone else. Where do we go to tap all that knowledge? On stackoverflow.uservoice.com there is a popular suggested feature to sanction, or add to SO, a place to hold discussions that aren't about specific programming questions. It seems that the suggestion has been denied in the past though.

  • Best Online Programming Degree? (Masters Level)

    I am less then a year from graduating with my bachelors in web development, however I would like to continue on with a masters in programming. As far as I can tell, what I want is a masters in software engineering. Sadly my current college only offers more management oriented masters level degrees, and I want something that is programming, not business. Ultimately my goal is to teach online and work freelance on the side. Here's the problem - I am visually impaired, so I do not drive and I prefer to take my classes entirely online. I have heard enough to avoid university of phoenix... and I have heard some good about walden, regis, and penn state's online MSSE programs. I am wondering if anyone here knows of any other good ones, or ones I should avoid. I have heard mixed reviews of Colorado Tech.

  • ResolveURL not resolving in a user control

    I'm trying to use ResolveUrl() to set some paths in the code behind of a custom ASP.NET user control. The user control contains a navigation menu. I'm loading it on a page that's loading a master page. When I call ResolveUrl("~") in my user control it returns "~" instead of the root of the site. When I call it in a page I get the root path as expected. I've stepped through with the debugger and confirmed, ResolveUrl("~") returns "~" in my user control code behind. Is there some other way I should be calling the function in my user control code behind to get the root path of the site?

    I am about to finish my B.Sc. in Applied Math. I started out in CS a few years back had a bit of a change of heart and decided to go the math route. Now that I am looking for career options finishing up and I'm just wonder how my Applied Math degree will look when applying for programming jobs. I have taken CS courses in C++/Java/C and done 2 semester of Scientific Computing with MATLAB/Mathematica and the like, so I feel like i at least know how to program.   • begin...end VS braces {...} VS indentation grouping

    Hi, everyone. I don't want to fuel any holy-wars here, but I need to ask your opinion. Right now I'm in process of designing a Hardware Description Language as a project in my university. I decided to take VHDL language and just add some syntax-sugar 'coz VHDL is rather obese in syntax. I decided to use indentation to group blocks of code (like in Python), and I'm strongly criticized for that. Originally Begin...End; grouping is used in VHDL language. I have no clue what are cons and pros of these 3 types of grouping, the only thing I know is that I like Python style and I don't understand if it's usage could be erroneous or something? What do you think? What do you like? (hope that I can get some feedback from people who extensively used different languages with different code-grouping syntax, like Pasca, Ada, Delphi, C, C++, C#, Java, Python)

Solution is not working when I send emails from Horde/Roundcube and any Desktop Client. Please guide me where I am doing wrong ?
