  I am looking at redesigning my website and was wondering if I could get some opinions. I know that the rule is usually to design with users without JS first and foremost, but having looked at the stats, it appears 95% of the users online have JS enabled. Would you recommend designing the website using JS and not bothering about people without it?

• Clever "add tag" javascript help needed

  I have this function for adding options to a Select list: function addOption(selectbox, value, text, cl ) { var optn = document.createElement("OPTION"); optn.text = text; optn.value = value; if (cl==1){ optn.className = "nav_option_main"; } selectbox.options.add(optn); } I have just discovered the "optgroup" tag, but I don't know how to implement it to the drop list. The function above is called on another selectboxes "OnChange" event, to fill sub-select-box with the desired options. I don't think it should be too difficult to add the "optgroup" tag into this, or is it? Thanks and if you need more input let me know...

• Get a CSS value from external style sheet with Javascript/jQuery

  Is it possible to get a value from the external CSS of a page if the element that the style refers to has not been generated yet? (the element is to be generated dynamically). The jQuery method I've seen is $('element').css('property','value');, but this relies on element being on the page. Is there a way of finding out what the property is set to within the CSS rather than the computed style of an element? Will I have to do something ugly like add a hidden copy of the element to my page so that I can access its style attributes?

• JavaScript automatically converts some special characters

  I need to extract a HTML-Substring with JS which is position dependent. I store special characters HTML-encoded. For example: HTML <div id="test"><p>l&ouml;sen &amp; gr&uuml;&szlig;en</p></div>? Text lösen & grüßen My problem lies in the JS-part, for example when I try to extract the fragment lö, which has the HTML-dependent starting position of 3 and the end position of 9 inside the <div> block. JS seems to convert some special characters internally so that the count from 3 to 9 is wrongly interpreted as "lösen " and not "l&ouml;". Other special characters like the &amp; are not affected by this. So my question is, if someone knows why JS is behaving in that way? Characters like &auml; or &ouml; are being converted while characters like &amp; or &nbsp; are plain. Is there any possibility to avoid this conversion? I've set up a fiddle to demonstrate this: JSFiddle Thanks for any help! EDIT: Maybe I've explained it a bit confusing, sorry for that. What I want is the HTML: <p>l&ouml;sen &amp; gr&uuml;&szlig;en</p> . Every special character should be unconverted, except the HTML-Tags. Like in the HTML above. But JS converts the &ouml; or &uuml; into ö or ü automatically, what I need to avoid.

  How do you nest quotes in HTML beyond the second level? As far as I know, there are only 2 types of quotes - single(') and double("). I am aware of escaping - you have to escape in the code but it converts the escaped quotes back to regular quotes when it hits the browser.   I want to add rollover effect on overlapping transparent images. For example: The following image is divided into 5 parts and I want to add rollover effect (different image) on each of them When O tried with div or img tag, the image is rendered as a rectangle so rollover effect is not proper. When i rollover on green part between yellow, the yellow image gets highlighted because its z-index is high. • ScriptManager duplicates javascript

  Hi! I have a usercontrol that can be used in for example a gridview itemtemplate, this means that the control might or might not be on the page at page load. In the case where the control is inside an itemtemplate i will popupate the gridview via asyncronous postbacks (via updatepanels). The control itselfs registrers scriptblocks since it is depending on javascripts. First i used Page.ClientScript.RegistrerClientScriptBlock But this doesn't work on asyncronous postbacks (updatepanels) so i then tried the same using ScriptManager which allows me to registrer scripts on the page after async postbacks. great!. ScriptManager.RegisterClientScriptBlock However, ScriptManager (what i know of) does not have the functionallity to see if a script already is on the page, so i will for every postback generate duplicates of the script blocks, this is ofcourse unwanted behaviour. I did a run at Google and found that i can call the Dispose() method of the PageRequestManager can be used, this does work since it clears the scripts and then adding them again (this also solves my issue with removing unused script blocks from removed controls). Sys.WebForms.PageRequestManager.getInstance().Dispose() However, ofcourse there is a downside since im posting here :). The Dispose() method disposes the instance on the master page as well which leads to scripts running there will stop to function after an async postback (updateprogress for example). So, is there a way to check if a script already exists on the page using ScriptManager or any other tools, that will prevent me of inserting duplicate scripts? Also, is there a way to remove certain script blocks (when i am removing an item in itemtemplate for example). Big thanks in advance.

  Hi, recently I've encountered a problem with IE. I have a function function() { ShowProgress(); DoSomeWork(); HideProgress(); } where ShowProgress and HideProgress just manipulate the 'display' CSS style using jQuery's css() method. In FF everything is OK, and at the same time I change the display property to block, progress-bar appears. But not in IE. In IE the style is applied, once I leave the function. Which means it's never shown, because at the end of the function I simply hide it. (if I remove the HideProgress line, the progress-bar appears right after finishing executing the function (more precisely, immediately when the calling functions ends - and so there's nothing else going on in IE)). Has anybody encountered this behavior? Is there a way to get IE to apply the style immediately? I've prepared a solution but it would take me some time to implement it. My DoSomeWork() method is doing some AJAX calls, and these are right now synchronous. I assume that making them asynchronous will kind of solve the problem, but I have to redesign the code a bit, so finding a solution just for applying the style immediately would much simplier.   I'm writing quite a bit of code in Prototype.js which returns null if a DOM-id wasn't found. $("someId").show(); If someId doesn't exist, a method will be called on null, which halts the entire program, in effect disabling all JS effects after the error. I could just check for null before executing such a statement, but this is getting tiring. I would like to catch an exception but I'm not sure which one its is. • IE 8 remove line break between nodes with JavaScript

  Ok i have a list of HTML nodes which should be inline with no spacing between them. The problem is, that the nodes are written from a CMS and therefore will come with all sorts of linebreaks and spaces. Therefore I'm removing the spaces with JS using the method descibed in this question. The problem is, however, that in IE (not 9) the white spaces isn't part of the childrens list of the parent node, rendering the method useless in IE. However IE 7 (or at least IE 9 emulating IE 7) ignores the linebreaks, so that one is in the clear. That leaves IE 8 as the troublemaker. I discovered that the line break is actually a part of the outerHTML and that a simple reset of the outerHTML did the trick - like so: node.outerHTML = node.outerHTML However this will reset the node intirely and therefore removing all events and other settings on the node, which isn't really any good. So my question is now: Is there a way to remove that linebreak from the nodes outerHTML whitout resetting the node? I've tried with zoom: 1, but to no avail. Hope anyone has any experience with this.
