  • Row Versioning Concurrency in SQL Server

    The optimistic concurrency model assumes that several concurrent transactions can usually complete without interfering with each other, and therefore do not require draconian locking on the resources they access. SQL Server 2005, and later, implements a form of this model called row versioning concurrency. It works by remembering the value of the data at the start of the transaction and checking that no other transaction has modified it before committing. If this optimism is justified for the pattern of activity within a database, it can improve performance by greatly reducing blocking. Kalen Delaney explains how it works in SQL Server.

  • ERP system written in SQL Server, Trigger job not running

    We are a manufacturing plant that runs off an ERP system written in SQL Server. I have never worked with SQL and therefore do not know the language. What I do know is that a trigger job that was running and updating data for us, is now NO longer running. Is anyone familiar enough to answer any questions about this for me???   • SQL Server becomes slow after restart

    I already posted this one on stackoverflow but someone gave me the hint to that I might have more luck on serverfault. We use SQL Server 2005 on an Windwos Server 2008. Ther Server has 48 GB RAM. SQL Server is configured to use 40 GB RAM. There is only one database hosted (About 70 GB). The only app beside SQL Server is our App-Server which connects the clients to the database. Now we encounter the following problem: After a restart of the server our the performance is great. The server grabs the 40 GB RAM wich it is allowed to and then runs fast as hell. But after about 4 weeks the system becomes slower and slower. The execution of statements (seen in the profiler) is raising slowly. But I cannot see that there is something going wrong on the server. CPU usage is at about 20% I/O also seems to be no Problem The process monitor does also not show that there are strange apps or something like that. Eventlog does also have no interessting messages No open transactions or blockings to see We do not use cursors in our app We tried already the following things without effect: Droped the cache by using the statements DBCC FreeProcCache DBCC FREESYSTEMCACHE('ALL') DBCC DropCleanbuffers Restarted the Appserver we are using. Restart the sql server service But nothing did help exept restarting the whole server. Any ideas?

    Hi all. I believe we're moving to Oracle Apex for future development. I've read about Oracle Apex on wikipedia and it's pro and con. It seem to me the con outweigh the pro but maybe I'm wrong. I get the sense that Oracle Apex is for DBA with little or no programing knowledge to setup a web app quickly sort like MS Access for none programmer. If you have Oracle Apex working experience, can you share your though? From wikipedia's entry, it doesn't seem like you need to know any programming language at all but just the PL/SQL? edit: Is Oracle Apex scalable? Can it handle traffic like Facebook's size? Thank.     We have a COM+ Data Layer that utilized Connection Pooling. Its deployed to 3 clusters, 2 SQL Server 2000 and 1 SQL Server 2005 environment. We noticed today that our monitoring software is reporting Thousands of Logins per minute on the SQL Server 2005 box. I did some tracing in both environments and profiler is reporting this for the 2000 boxes: sp_reset_connection SQL CALL sp_reset_connection SQL CALL sp_reset_connection SQL CALL and this for the 2005 box: Audit Logout sp_reset_connection Audit Login SQL CALL Audit Logout sp_reset_connection Audit Login SQL CALL Audit Logout sp_reset_connection Audit Login SQL CALL Is there some sort configuration for SQL Server 2005 different from SQL Server 2000 that we might be missing that would be creating this issue?

    I recently asked a question about upgrading from 2003 to 2008, but i realised this is a lot harder to do, the only reason i want to upgrade is to have increase the RAM Windows 2003 Standard Edition R2 only supports 4GB Windows 2003 Enterprise Edition R2 supports up to 32GB Windows 2003 Datacentre Edition R2 supports up to 64GB So basically i need to do an in-place upgrade to either Enterpirse or Datacentre without losing any data is this possible? Also is one easier to upgrade to then the other?

    When I try run/debug an app in the emulator I get this error: And in Visual Studio's Error List console it simply says: 0x80131500 I haven't worked on this project for about a week, but it was working then. I checked the BIOS and everything is enabled (as it was last week). I don't think this is related, but yesterday, I did upgrade my system SSD and used the Samsung Data Migration Tool to clone my drive. I've tried repairing the Windows Phone SDK 8.0, but that didn't help. Are there any other things I can try? I really don't think it's related to the SSD. Hyper-V related services: I can't start any of these either.

    We are evaluating our options to upgrade our Windows SBS 2003 server. We are considering Windows SBS 2008, which comes with Exchange 2007 and an extra Windows Server 2008 Standard license. If we also bought Exchange 2010, could we install it on the Windows Server 2008 Standard machine and use the web client in combination with the Exchange 2007 server (that would be hosting the mailboxes)? Is that a supported server role for Exchange 2010? I remember reading about so called front-end server configurations, but I have no experience with that. Thanks!

  • Can I upgrade a Windows 2000 domain to 2008 and demote the 2000 server without clients attached?

    Hi all, We're planning to replace a Windows 2000 domain controller with a new 2008 DC (new hardware). We've elected to take the route of getting the 2000 domain schema up-to-snuff, join the 2008 server, upgrade it to a DC, and after replication demote the 2000 server (eventually to be taken off-line). The goal being to not have to visit all the workstations, and limited domain down-time. :) We want bring the old server here and do all the backups, Domain prep, migration and role transfers here, and then (hopefully) just plop the new 2008 back in place after it's done, and join the 2000 server back as a member server (so we can then do folder migrations, etc.). Can this server work be done off-site, without the workstations attached? If we do this will anything need to be done to the clients, once the new DC is physically in place, so they contact the new 2008 DC; or will they just 'know' and continue on using the existing domain settings/user profiles, etc.?
