• Wubi downloaded and installed 64bit 12.10 on my 32bit netbook

  I downloaded the Wubi installer on my atom N450 netbook. When I started up Ubuntu I got an error that read failed to change the mode of /ect/passwd- to 0600. Then while it booted it froze and several strange characters filled the screen. Finally it loaded it ran pretty slow, and I could connect to my router, but not to the internet. Ping 8.8.8.8 showed no server found. So I checked the about computer and it said I was running the 64 bit installation. Now I know that my computer has a low power 32 bit chip and even the Ubuntu iso download suggested a 32 bit installation. So I went to double check and see if I just missed the option for a 32 bit Wubi install and I did not. There was no option. Is there any way to download a 32 bit version of 12.10 through the Wubi?

• How can I figure out why Suspend sometimes fails?

  Something is causing suspend crash occasionally. When it does crash, the system freezes with a black screen and stays on, not suspending. This makes me have to hold the power button until the system shuts down. One setting difference I have from most people is, I don't use the option that lets you suspend when the laptop lid is closed. So opening and closing the laptop lid has no actions. I like to press suspend manually. Could this preference change be the cause? How can I start looking for what's causing the crash, since the crash doesn't display errors?

At this point, i understand there is an error in the ApplyRequestValues Phases which is very early and so the previous state is restored and nothing changes. What I don't understand is that in order to fufill the condition for rendering "item.typeA" that object has to be an instance of TypeA. But here, it looks like that object passed the condition even though it was an instance of TypeB. It is like it is evaluating the inner dataTable (InnerItems) before evaluating the outer (outerItems). My working assumption is that I just don't understand how/when the rendered attribute is actually evaluated.

• Boot-up hangs unless I manually select the kernel in the bootloader

  In my stock Ubuntu install (forgot which critter its named for, about one year old), I am able to boot up normally only if I manually select the kernel in the bootloader (Grub). If I step away and it boots from the default, the system will hang with the word "Ubuntu" on a graphics screen and a few white/red blinking dots beneath it. umb@digdug:~$ uname -a Linux digdug 2.6.32-42-generic #95-Ubuntu SMP Wed Jul 25 15:57:54 UTC 2012 i686 GNU/Linux Synaptics says I have 'grub-pc' version 1.98-1ubuntu-13 installed. My grub.cfg does have default="0" which I would expect to make the default be the first kernel shown in the selection screen. The system is a laptop with an i7 processor, and I have had trouble with some kernels not being able to boot at all in the past, and power management is not working perfectly, but I have not had problems booting the latest kernel (2.6.32-42) if I select it manually in Grub. Any idea what is going on here and how can I fix it so that I can re-boot unattended?

• Unity displays a black screen when connecting an external monitor

  I upgraded my ubuntu from 10.10 to 11.04 and since that day I have been facing issues with Dual Monitor in Ubuntu. When I connect my second monitor during boot time, everything works fine. But when I use my laptop and try to connect a monitor when I am running Ubuntu, I face a weird black screen issue. To see what I mean, following is a screenshot of the same. Here are the problems that happen Desktop background goes away As you can see on the left hand side of the desktop, the right and top portions are black The usual buttons - power button, mail, volumne etc., on the top panel do not work as expected Plus it suddenly crashses at times. And a lot of n other issues associated with this. Is there any patch/release that has happened for these bugs or should I report it anywhere? Help needed.

• Booting briefly shows CLI login and then black

  When I boot to Ubuntu on my dualboot system, it appears to boot normally, up to the point when I would normally expect to see the lightDM graphical login screen. However, I see a CLI login screen, which I assume is tty1. Before I get a chance to actually login to it, though, it drops to a black screen with a flashing cursor. Pressing ctrl+alt+f1 does nothing. When I hit the power button on the laptop, I see the usual scrolling text as Ubuntu shuts down. I know that this is related to me having installed the proprietary ATI drivers for the video card. Purging the drivers gave me back a GUI, but unfortunately no working desktop environment, and switching to the mesa drivers returned me to the black screen issue. The only way I can get a stable working CLI is through booting to advanced options and choosing a root shell prompt, as even the failsafe X session doesn't function for me.

  I'm trying to use an NSLinguisticTagger to monitor the contents of an NSTextStorage and provide some contextual information based on what the user types. To that end, I have an OverlayManager object, which wires up this relationship: -(void) setView:(NSTextView*) view { _view = view; _layout = view.layoutManager; _storage = view.layoutManager.textStorage; //get the TextStorage from the view [_tagger setString:_storage.string]; //pull the string out, this grabs the mutable version [self registerForNotificationsOn:self->_storage]; //subscribe to the willProcessEditing notification } When an edit occurs, I make sure to trap it and notify the tagger (and yes, I know I'm being annoyingly inconsistent with member access, I'm rusty on Obj-C, I'll fix it later): - (void) textStorageWillProcessEditing:(NSNotification*) notification{ if ([self->_storage editedMask] & NSTextStorageEditedCharacters) { NSRange editedRange = [self->_storage editedRange]; NSUInteger delta = [self->_storage changeInLength]; [_tagger stringEditedInRange:editedRange changeInLength:delta]; //should notify the tagger of the changes [self highlightEdits:self]; } } The highlightEdits message delegates the job out to a pool of "Overlay" objects. Each contains a block of code similar to this: [tagger enumerateTagsInRange:range scheme:NSLinguisticTagSchemeLexicalClass options:0 usingBlock:^(NSString *tag, NSRange tokenRange, NSRange sentenceRange, BOOL *stop) { if (tag == PartOfSpeech) { [self applyHighlightToRange:tokenRange onStorage:storage]; } }]; And that's where the problem is- the enumerateTagsInRange method crashes out with a message: 2014-06-04 10:07:19.692 WritersEditor[40191:303] NSMutableRLEArray replaceObjectsInRange:withObject:length:: Out of bounds This problem doesn't occur if I don't link to the mutable copy of the underlying string and instead do a [[_storage string] copy], but obviously I don't want to copy the entire backing store every time I want to do tagging. This all should be happening in the main run loop, so I don't think this is a threading issue. The NSRange I'm enumerating tags on exists both in the NSTextStorage and in the NSLinguisticTagger's view of the string. It's not even the fact that the applyHighlightToRange call adds attributes to the string, because it crashes before even reaching that line. • TStringGrid with BOTH editing AND range selection?

  Question: Can anyone point to an article or code samples anywhere on how to provide BOTH editing AND range selection in a TStringGrid? Yes, I KNOW there are third-party grids that do this, but it's frustrating that the built-in grid lacks this basic capability. Background: It's pretty normal to expect to be able to both edit a cell in a grid, and also to select a range of cells such as for a Copy operation. As delivered, TStringGrid doesn't do that. It's either/or. In fact, the docs tell us about the grid Options, "When goEditing is included in Options, goRangeSelect has no effect". However, it looks like it may be possible to do editing and rangeselects in a TStringGrid anyway!!! Through careful use of the mousedown, mouseup, selectcell and exit events, you can get dang close by switching editing elements on and off at the right times. But I still don't have it perfect, and that only covers mouse use, not keyboard changes.

• GPU On-the-fly encoding of video through Logitech HD Webcam C510

  Originally asked here but I edited that to move this question as a different one on suggestion by a fellow member. I read that I should have a Core2Duo 2.2Ghz for 720p but I have a 2.0Ghz one, would it be possible for me to first record it and then encode it after recording if my processor really start giving issue when doing on-the-fly encoding? I also have a ATI HD 4850 512MB card, if it can help in encoding on-the-fly or is there a chance that my graphics card alone can handle it and those specs were just for a system without a graphics card? I believe so. Also, I got no worries in dealing with console, if I have to do some of the things above in terminal. Other possible significant details: I have a dual screen setup 29" (1360X768) & 22" (1680X1050) which might be using some good power from GPU and I have 2GB DDR2 800Mhz RAM.

• Is there a way to disable a particular pci port

  I have a MB with 2 nics on it. a switch burned up and took out one of them. there is no way to turn them off individually in the bios. is there a way to turn off one of the ports. unmap it,unbind it, power it down so the system doesnt see it at after boot. they are mapped as 0000:02.08.0 and 0000:02.08.1 I want to turn the second one off somehow. Since they both use the same driver, blacklisting the module will take out both of them. Normally I would just live with it but it seems there should be a way to do that like in windows (gasp)--just disable it. I Actually have the exact same problem on another comp running XCP so this will be a 2fer if it gets figured out. the OS is 12.4 lts server with xen on it. THX

  Im having a bit of a problem with my 2 graphic card in my laptop. laptop: Acer Aspire 5553g Graphic Cards: Performance: ATI Mobility Radeon HD 5650 Power saving: ATI Radeon HD 4200. On this laptop i have used ubuntu 11.04, then upgraded to 11.11, and now upgraded to 12.04 the other day. The problem is that sins i upgraded to 12.04 im unable to switch to my performance graphic card using the Catalyst Control Center. Under 11.04 and 11.11 it was no problem. I open the Catalyst Control Center and select the performance option then apply, it tels me that it will be applied after reboot, I reboot and nothing has changed. Im able to "force" it by changing in BIOS, so i know there is nothing wrong with the card. Thanks /Daan

  How can I turn off the PCI slots and change the device (especially NIC) without shutting the server down? • ubuntu 14 painfully slow on dell r200

  I didn't notice it at first. The machines (there is 20 plus) are to be used a simple file servers. It wasn't until samba just wouldn't act right that I installed a desktop gui and started more diagnoseing the problem did I catch the slow preformance... I've tested 4 servers they all suck. And windows 7 runs fantastic on them. I have Google and searched. But nothing to explain this. The easy test is dmesg is so slow you can almost read it. I'm guessing it's an apic or cpu power management issue. What output would you all like????? It is a core2 machine with 4Gb of ram. On board data.

• MAAS fails to Commission nodes

  I'm evaluating MaaS/Juju. I followed instructions in this link http://maas.ubuntu.com/docs1.5/install.html to setup MaaS. I'm running this in Oracle VirtualBox environment so Power options are not configured for the VMs. PXE booting VM works fine. The node shuts down itself and registers with MaaS in Declared state. Issues: a) When I Commission the VM (which is in the Declared state), first it gets IP-Config: no response after 60 secs - giving up errors. (See link below for a screenshot). b) Fails to mount the boot device and drops into initramfs prompt.   I work for a small company which has less than 100 persons. Several months ago, this company offered me position of SA and I accepted. There are three teams in this company, and I work for one of them. This is the first time I work as a SA. During the past months, I find I don't have any power of management, I even can't let the team member do things (coding-related) in the way which is correct and more efficient. The team members argue with me on very very basic technical questions and I have to explain to them again and again.   hi dears as ext4 introduced more reliable than ext3 with block journals, is there any chance to suppose it 100% reliable? what if enabling block journaling on it, which is disabled by default? as friend's guide to explain my case in more detail: i have an embedded linux device, after installation keyboard and monitor is detached and it works standalone. my duty is to make sure it has reliable file-system so with errors there is no way to fsck on device. i can't force my customer to use a ups with each device to ensure no fault by power-failure. what can you offer me more than enabling block journaling? thanks in advance
