• Sqlite3 activerecord :order => "time DESC" doesn't sort

  rails 2.3.4, sqlite3 I'm trying this Production.find(:all, :conditions = ["time ?", start_time.utc], :order = "time DESC", :limit = 100) The condition works perfectly, but I'm having problems with the :order = time DESC. By chance, I discovered that it worked at Heroku (testing with heroku console), which runs PostgreSQL. However, locally, using sqlite3, new entries will be sorted after old ones, no matter what I set time to. Like this (output has been manually stripped): second entry is new: Production id: 2053939460, time: "2010-04-24 23:00:04", created_at: "2010-04-24 23:00:05" Production id: 2053939532, time: "2010-04-25 10:00:00", created_at: "2010-04-27 05:58:30" Production id: 2053939461, time: "2010-04-25 00:00:04", created_at: "2010-04-25 00:00:04" Production id: 2053939463, time: "2010-04-25 01:00:04", created_at: "2010-04-25 01:00:04" Seems like it sorts on the primary key, id, not time. Note that the query works fine on heroku, returning a correctly ordered list! I like sqlite, it's so KISS, I hope you can help me... Any suggestions?

• Why are my ActiveRecord class instance variables disappearing after the first request in development

  I have a class instance variable on one of my AR classes. I set its value at boot with an initializer and, after that, never touch it again except to read from it. In development mode, this value disappears after the first request to the web server. However, when running tests, using the console or running the production server this does not happen. # The AR class class Group < ActiveRecord::Base class << self attr_accessor :path end end # The initializer Group.path = File.join(RAILS_ROOT, "public", "etc") # First request in a view %p= Group.path #=> "/home/rails/app/public/etc" # Second request in a view %p= Group.path #=> nil Is there something about development mode that nukes instance variables from classes with each request? • Git + Capistrano = Automatic Release Notes Generator ?

  We use git (github) and capistrano (like 99% of the Rails shops out there) to deploy our app to production. What I'd like to do is, after every cap * deploy generate a text file containing all the git commit comments since the last deploy. I can then take that list of commit comments, clean it up, and put it somewhere for consumption. "git log" http://book.git-scm.com/3_reviewing_history_-_git_log.html has plenty of options for fetching log messages, but I don't see an easy way in capistrano to return the current and previous commits, or even the last date/time a deployment occurred, so I can pass that to git log Thoughts? I can't be the first one doing this... Thanks!

• Is there a way to make the flash[:notice] appear above, or before, the flash[:error] ?

  So, I'd like to be able to display both a flash[:notice] and a flash[:error] on the same action, but I'd like for the :notice to always be displayed above (or before) the error. Is there a way to do this? In my controller, I thought I could just code the flash[:error] before the flash[:notice], so that rails will display it correctly, and it does a vast majority of the time. But every now and then they are randomly switched, and I can't seem to figure out why. So, how can I ensure that a flash[:notice] is always displayed above an :error ?

• Help getting ActiveScaffold to work properly

  Hey there I was curious about the ActiveScaffold Rails plugin, but somehow I can't get it to work properly. I've followed the steps which are described on http://activescaffold.com/tutorials/ . The table and everything shows up and when I click on "Create new", the dialog pops up. However, when I fill out the form and click "Create", I just get "500 Internal server error". In the server log, it says "NameError (wrong constant name ###):", with ### being what I entered in the first form field. If I don't enter anything in the form, it says "NoMethodError (undefined method `new_record?' for #):"... So what am I doing wrong here? Thanks in advance for your help :)

• locale based sorting function in ruby

  For my application(Ruby on Rails) i have country select box for the signup page. These countries are localized into different language. But i couldnt find a way to sort them, based on the language in which its localized. At present i have sorted it out based on english only. Is there a way to sort the country names based on the locale? i.e the order of the countries should change(ascending order) according to the language its localised. Thanks..

  I am currently using a site5 server and would like rake jobs:work pretty much running all the time. I currently cannot send out the jobs unless i'm logged into the server. I hope that someone out there can help me with this. Had alot of trouble with ar_mailer and the whenever gem ... but have about another 5 gems working perfectly within my rails app. can someone shed some light on a solution for this please? greatly appreciated.   Hey guys I was wondering if anyone could help me with an issue im having, basically id like to have Account.create after a PayPal notification is received, There is a simple cart model which corresponds to line_items within the cart so add_account_to_market would look like this in pseudo code def add_account_to_market if status == "Completed" find the line items(via cart_id) that correspond to the cart.id that just been paid create an account with user_id set to the current carts user id end end Ive never tried to do something like this in Rails and its not working, Ive been pulling my hair out all night trying to fix this, hopefully someone can help or point me in the right direction.   Hi! I've got model A and model Attach. I'm editing my A form with nested attributes for :attaches. And when I am deleting all attaches from A via accepts_nested_attributes_for how can I get after_update/after_save callbacks for all of my nested models? Problem is that when I am executing callbacks in model A they are executed right AFTER model A is updated and BEFORE model Attach is updated, so I can't, for example, know if there is NO ANY attaches after I delete them all :).   I recently started learning Ruby and Ruby on Rails, and have watched a plethora of getting started materials. I have been finding lately that I keep getting errors where gems won't install or they will be installed but they can't be used for some reason, and I have decided that I want to remove everything down to once again just having Ruby installed and start over with the installation. One training video had me install most of my gems with RVM, so I don't know if that changes anything. So in short my question is "How to I get rid of RVM, Rubygems, and all installed Gems so that I can start over with just Ruby?" Edit: I am on Mac OS 10.6

  I am building a framework that will validate forms both client-side (javascript) and server-side based on a form requirements specification written in json. The purpose is to get rid of logically equivalent code on the server and client to make the code more maintainable, faster to write, and less buggy. • Scaffolding A model with an attribute of type datetime creates a 10 years range in the form

  For a simple rails application ( 1.86 /2.3.5) , lets say I run a simple scaffold script/generate scaffold blog title:string content:text published:date When I open up the new / edit view for the blog controller in index/new.html.erb , I see that the drop down enabler for date select has a date range of 2005 - 2015 , i.e 5 years +/- I tried to change this default behavior by introducing this code f.date_select :entered, :start_year => 1970, :end_year => 2020 Apparently this has no impact to the behavior mentioned above. How do I increase the date_select range which seems to be default?

• Using delayed_job to process file uploads across multiple servers

  Does anyone have any good resources on how to do this? Basically, I'm working on a project (in Rails) where people can upload files. They might be big. I'd like to process them using delayed_job before sending them to S3. I'd also like to do this processing on a separate job queue server, rather than on the webserver itself. I'd rather not have to upload the files to the webserver, then transfer them to the job queue server, and then upload them to S3 if I don't have to. Thanks.

• Autotest notifications on Ubuntu virtual environment

  I am having trouble getting Rails autotest notifications to work on the Engine Yard Vagrant environment. On the Mac, I normally get the notifications via Growl. However, on the virtual environment (which runs Ubuntu) that doesn't work. I tried running Linux notification setups such as libnotify+autotest-notification, but I get the following error: libnotify-Message: Unable to get session bus: /bin/dbus-launch terminated abnormally with the following error: Autolaunch error: X11 initialization failed. ** (notify-send:1004): CRITICAL **: dbus_g_proxy_connect_signal: assertion `DBUS_IS_G_PROXY (proxy)' failed ** (notify-send:1004): CRITICAL **: dbus_g_proxy_connect_signal: assertion `DBUS_IS_G_PROXY (proxy)' failed ** (notify-send:1004): CRITICAL **: dbus_g_proxy_call: assertion `DBUS_IS_G_PROXY (proxy)' failed Another path would be to have Growl receive the notifications remotely, but I don't even know where to begin with that... But I don't know if I want all developer machines to beusing s3 for storage of all our test and dev images. Maybe it's not an issue -- but it seems like a waste to have everyone storing all our images in s3. I've heard of some ppl who store images on s3 'hacking' dev environments to store images locally on the file system -- and then using s3 in prod only. What are other people doing?

• rake db:create gives some problem when used from limited account

  I am using mysql 5.1 and mysql gems version is 2.73 This is giving the following error message when I try to run it from a limited account in my XP. If try it using the admin account, it works fine. I think this is wierd because it cannot be the problem of mysql gem. (in F:/Temp/wassup) !!! The bundled mysql.rb driver has been removed from Rails 2.2. Please install the mysql gem and try again: gem install mysql. rake aborted! 5: Access is denied. - C:/Program Files/Ruby/lib/ruby/gems/1.8/gems/mysql-2.7. 3-x86-mswin32/ext/mysql.so (See full trace by running task with --trace) I need to work from the limited account. Can anyone let me know why is this happening?

• What's the best technology for a medium complexity web application?

  I'm planning to work on a web application of reasonable complexity and am wondering what technology to go with. It will probably start with one person, but there will be 2 or 3 more eventually. My first requirement is to be able to do this as quickly as possible - preferably with as less code as possible. Secondly requirement is that it should be able to scale easily. I have worked with .NET and PHP. So, I am thinking about ASP .NET MVC or CakePHP. It appears to me that CakePHP might be quicker. I did look at Ruby on Rails, but the learning curve is a little steep (which is not an issue if I can be convinced that this is the best tool for the task), I'm not too crazy about the huge number of files generated and I have heard about scalability issues as well as it's applicability to complex situations. I look forward to your opinions on your favorite technology and why.

• Mongrel_rails can't find memcache-client

  We started to use memcache-client in our rails app and it works just fine with "script/server" but "mongrel_rails start" fails with an error. In environment.rb we define "memcache-client" and version "1.8.1". Gem list shows that the gem is installed: memcache-client (1.8.1). If run with "script/server" everything works but with "mongrel_rails start" it fails with error: no such file to load -- memcache-client Any advice what could be wrong here? Is there something different in the way mongrel_rails loads the gems compared to script/server? Or is my setup just broken?

Also what other things developer should know having experience of 2 years or more. I am in double mind as i have over two years of exp. in ruby and i am learning new thing everyday in ruby only. if someone ask me to rate yourself i can't give more than 5 out of 10 in ROR only. • How to make/monitor/deploy daemon processes in JRuby

  I'm currently porting a Rails App currently using REE to JRuby so I can offer an easy-to-install JRuby alternative. I've bundled the app into a WAR file using Bundler which I'm currently deploying to GlassFish. However, this app has a couple of daemon processes and it would be ideal if these could be part of the WAR file, and potentially monitored by Glassfish (if possible). I've looked at QuartzScheduler, and while meets my needs for a couple of things, I have a daemon process that must execute every 20 seconds as it's polling the database for any delayed mail to send. If anyone can provide any insight as to how best to set up daemon processes in a JRuby/Java/Glassfish environment any help will be greatly appreciated! :)

• Having trouble routing a page in ruby

  I currently have a users model and controller, whenever a user is created it makes there profile url at example.com/users/userid. I also have a users/new page and a users/index page. The issue is that when I try to create a users/selected users page rails thinks its a user id and gives me this error. "Couldn't find User with id=selectedusers." I've previously been able to fix this by directly calling the pages in the controller e.g index, or new but I'm not sure how to handle a page that doesent have a function in the controller. • How do i style a JSON feed in my view?

  My rails app gets the following JSON feed from mixcloud and sticks the results into my index page At the moment when I do this, the entire contents of my feed are displayed unformatted in one big blob of scary looking text (without the curly JSON brackets) I only want to display specific values from the feed in the view. From the feed in question lets say for simplicity that I just wanted to display all values with a key of "url" In case I'm doing something wrong here's my code: # podcast controller def index # I'm using a class method to get the feed @feed = Podcast.feed end # podcast model def self.feed feed = JSON.parse(open("http://api.mixcloud.com/alivefrommaryhill/feed").read) end # index.html.haml .feed = @feed I can't figure out how to style the results and display only certain items from the feed. • How to let a guest user start their workflow and prompt registration when they try to save their wor

  I'm wondering what I would do to go about letting a guest use my web application without registering, then if they attempt to save their work they are prompted with a registration. This will be in a rails application by the way. Can I just allow public access to part of the work flow, then when they save check if they're a registered user (by session value, or cookie?). If they aren't a registered user, save all their work into the session and let them fill out a sign out form. On successful registration automatically log them in and initiate the create on the db?
