• Game Code Design for Rendering

  I first created a game on the iPhone and I'm now porting it to Android. I wrote most of the code in C++, but when it came to porting it wasn't so easy. The Android way is to have two threads, one for rendering and one for updating. This due to some devices blocking when updating the hardware. My problem is that I am coming from the iPhone. When I transition, say from the Menu to the Game, I would stop the Animation (Rendering) and load up the next Manager (the Menu has a Manager and so has the Game). I could implement the same thing on Android, but I have noticed on game ports like Quake, don't do this - as far as I can tell. I have learnt that I cannot just dynamically add another Renderer class the the tree because I will probably get a dequeuing buffer error - which I believe to be a problem with the OpenGL ES side. So how is it done?

This library was built mainly to significantly facilitate the work and coding time, and makes it easy to create and work with HTTP requests. I think a big advantage of this library is that it is open-source, so everyone can contribute to make it even better. I started this project for personal use, and I really like the result. What is the right and proper way to publicize the project, I do think it will be handy to Android developers. So how can I make developers know this library exist?

  Possible Duplicate: What Forum Software should I use? I have to renew a website for a sport club. There is some self programmed CMS in use at this time. But I need a new solution. A popular CMS that could be up to date over the next 3 or 4 years. I took a look at Drupal 7. Not sure about whether it's easy possible to create member profiles (they should be able to edit them self), a board and team overviews. • Collisions between moving ball and polygons

  I know this is a very typical problem and that there area a lot of similar questions, but I have been looking for a while and I have not found anything that fits what I want. I am developing a 2D game in which I need to perform collisions between a ball and simple polygons. The polygons are defined as an array of vertices. I have implemented the collisions with the bounding boxes of the polygons (that was easy) and I need to refine that collision in the cases where the ball collides with the bounding box. The ball can move quite fast and the polygons are not too big so I need to perform continuous collisions. I am looking for a method that allows me to detect if the ball collides with a polygon and, at the same time, calculate the new direction for the ball after bouncing in the polygon. (I am using XNA, in case that helps)

In this space, I know phpBB and SMF are strong contenders. I do not know for sure the names of other great forum software that might exist... My most important need is that it should be easy to modify the display area, at the least, without having to dig too much into the core. Drupal excels in this area with its templating system, but the forum module doesn't look like the forum interface most people are used to... It would be a great plus if the software has alternative Captchas like question based or invisible Captcha. • Getting out of my head

  (I put this on SO, but it got a couple close votes saying it belonged here instead...) I've spent the last year as a single person team developing a rich-client application (35,000+ LoC, for what it's worth). It's currently stable and in production. However, I know that my skills were rusty at the beginning of the project, so without a doubt there are major issues to the code. At this point, most of the issues are in architecture, structure, or interactions - the easy problems, even architecture/design problems, have already been weeded out. Unfortunately, I've spent so much time with this project that I'm having a hard time thinking outside of it - approaching it from a new perspective to see the flaws deeply buried or inherent in the design. How do I step outside my head and outside my code so I can get a fresh look at this code so I can make it better? Is this less of an issue than I think it is, or is this a problem for other people as well?

  This sounds like an easy thing but when i considering the following Many players Some have played many games and some just started Different type of statistics ...on what information should the actual ranking be based on. I am planning to display the board in a UITableView so there is limited space available per player. However, I am not bound to the UITableView if there is a better solution. This is a quiz game and the information i am currently capturing per player is: #games played totally #games played per game type (current version have only one game type) #questions answered #correct answers Maybe i should include additional information. I have been thinking about having a leaderboard property page where the player can decide on what basis the leaderboard should display information but would like to avoid the complexity in that. However, if that is needed i will do it. Anyone that can give me some advice on how to design the presentation of this would be highly appreciated?

• Should extension scripts be run in a sandbox?

  In particular, this is about game extensions written in lua (luajit-2.0). I was contemplating whether I should restrict what these scripts can do, and arrived at the conclusion that I probably shouldn't: It's hard to get right. Sounds silly, but chances are my sandbox is gonna end up leaky anyways. The only benefit I could think of would be giving users some sense of security when running third party scripts. The disadvantages would be that it's just incredibly annoying for extension writers. That is, for now, myself (game content will be mostly scripted). The reason I'm asking this now before I actually have anything presentable is that adding a sandbox early on is easy, but would impose said annoying restrictions on myself too. However if I first go on with it and then later decide I do need a sandbox after all, I'm gonna run into problems (I'd either have to rewrite the scripts that are already there, or introduce some form of trust management system which seems to be more trouble than it's worth).

Companies can buy a subscription and their users can access the application online. Hopefully I will get multiple companies subscribing to my appplication/service. Thing is, what should I do with my code and database? Seperate app code base and database per company One app code base but seperate database per company One app code base and one database The decision I am to make involves security (e.g. user from company X should not see any data from company Y) performance (let's suppose it becomes successful, it should have a good performance) and scalability (again, if successful, it should have a good performance but also easy for me to handle all the companies, code changes, etc) For sake of maintainability, I tend to opt for the one code base. For the database I really don't know at this moment. So what do you think is the best option?

• Set nomodeset in usb installation (efi loader with iso)

  I'm working with the studyblast solution (http://studyblast.wordpress.com/2011/08/14/guide-mac-os-x-lion-how-to-boot-a-linux-live-system-from-a-usb-drive-how-to-update-any-ocz-ssds-firmware/) to creating a live usb for osx. I managed to get Ubuntu booted but the screen looks like a corrupt/glitch image. I can just about make out the clock on the bottom right and a few icons. I've been told that this is an easy fix and that nomodeset needs to be set for the graphics card but all the solutions i find are for a hard drive installed Ubuntu where you can cd in and edit the grub file - how do you do this is it's in an iso? • What's a good tool for Scrum Project Management in game development? [closed]

  I'm looking for an efficient, easy-to-learn tool for Scrum project management not for proffesional use but to use it in my thesis concerning the use of Scrum in game development. Basically I want to visualize a production process of a hypothetical game. Some fragments of the production process should be really detailed to make my point, so basically user stories, tasks, burndown charts etc. are a must. I'm using Scrum, Kanban and some Lean practices for eliminating waste. I also want to use Extreme Programming practices in this production process including TDD and Continuous Integration. I have zero experience in proffesional project management so I need something that's fairly simple to use for a newb like me. Anyone can recommend a tool like that? For now I was thinking about TargetProcess and ScrumWorks. Thanks.

• Time tracking and payment registration architecture

  ?itle might be a little bit incorrect. :) Anyway, I'm building a software where employees input time they worked per day (work hours) and employer "pays" for this time. "Payment" is done outside this system, so employer just "confirms" (checkbox or something like this) which work hours are paid. So the question is - what is the best way (both UI and data storage wise) to implement this? At the moment I have this idea: Employee selects week and manually (with some Javascript helpers, like "fill the same time for all days") inputs work hours in every day of the week. Employer confirms payment the same way employee inputs data (selects week, confirms each day). Data is saved in DB as unix timestamp (one day per table row). Problem is 14 inputs (7 days * ("hours from" + "hours to" input), yet this approach seems kinda easy to implement. Maybe I'm overlooking something and this can be done differently and better? Maybe someone has any example of already working software?

• Is there a ways to see granular per-visit data in Google Analytics?

  I've started using Google Analytics very recently and I'm a bit lost with the sea of options (have been using Sitemeter before for some time). I've clicked through the service a lot but couldn't find what I'm accustomed to. I can see multitude of aggregated statistics in GA like: charts of browser share lists of country share lists of most visited URLs within the page and so on, but I would actually like to analyze each of the visits themselves. Something like: User X, France, Chrome, 7 pageviews between 18:01 and 18:15, entered on a.htm and exited on b.htm User Y, UK, Firefox, 1 pageview at 18:20, entered on c.htm Is there an easy way to see the reports in this way (perhaps by clicking a link to a separate page to see that particular session's stats)? How to navigate there if so?

  I installed XBMC and it's working beautifully. I have my own skin I'd like to use and all I should have to do is copy and past my skin.folder into the addons folder and I'm down. However, this isn't so easy with Ubuntu. I have the latest version, installed today 11-14-2012 Could someone please spell out the command process to make this happen? I've read through so many forums, tried ssh, I know now I'm getting into things that could be dangerous so any help would be much appreciated. • How to resize a /home partition in Kubuntu?

  I was distro hopping for awhile in the past few months, so in order to keep all of my files secure, I made a partition of around 50 GB named Files to store all of my files in, and still have them for quick and easy access. However, now that I've found a distribution I'm comfortable with (Kubuntu 11.10), I would like to remove this partition, and have all of my files in my /home folder, in order to more easily deal with these files. I've moved all of my files in the partition to my /home folder (and still have plenty of room to spare), and now I'm trying to delete the partition and use the space for my /home folder. I can delete the partition just fine, however, I can't extend the /home folder into the unallocated space. Here's a screenshot of what I'm talking about. In order to change the size of the /home partition, I need to unmount it. But, I am unable to unmount it! How do I best extend the size of the partition?

• Hide individual regions on a territory map

  I have a map of adjacent irregularly-shaped territories. It happens to be a county map, but that's not important. In the game, the player only sees a few to start, and as he progresses to new territories, the ones adjacent to it are revealed. It's a territory-scale fog-of-war. I'm using Unity3D, and my inclination is to make a set of planes, each of which has an image of a single territory on it, and then arrange them manually like a jigsaw puzzle. It then is fairly easy to respond to a click on each region and also to mark the planes as visible or invisible, or even do clever things like fade or zoom on individual regions. This sounds like an arduous task, and if we need to change the visual design of the territories, we'd have to cut up the main map all over again into each of the individual pieces. Does anyone have a more elegant solution to this problem?

  I've got an issue where this company wants to provide all sorts of whiz bang features to their users that require an insane number of facebook permissions for their FB app. Being that my name is going to be attached to this, I would rather give them a solution which allows for easy sign in and asks for the minimum permissions up front. This would give them a huge boost in registrations and activity publishing across the site with the potential to "go viral". If we ask for a ton of permissions up front I know for a fact we will not go viral and will probably incur much wrath from the blogosphere. What would you do?
