  • Service Layer - how broad should it be, and should it also be on the local application?

    Background: I need to build a desktop application with some operations (CRUD and more) (=winforms), I need to make another application which will re-use some of the functions of the main application (=webforms). I understood that using service layer is the best approach here. If I understood correctly the service should be calling the function on the BL layer (correct me if I'm wrong) The dilemma: In my main winform UI - should I call the functions from the BL, or from the service? (please explain why) Should I create a service for every single function on the BL even if I need some of the functions only in one UI? for example - should I create services for all the CRUD operations, even though I need to re-use only update operation in the webform? YOUR HELP IS MUCH APPRECIATED

  • How do I access and enable more icons to be in the system tray?

    So I'm messing around with Natty a little, and I noticed that all the apps that would normally use the system tray (or "notification area"?) aren't displaying there. Is that a bug, or is that the way it's going to be? I heard something about Ubuntu getting rid of that feature entirely. Is there a way to add it back? I mean, I didn't really like it, either, especially when there were apps that used it unnecessarily, but I can't use CryptKeeper at all now, or easycrypt, and I don't know whether Dropbox has synced without opening Nautilus.

  • Starting small custom development company, type of niches to target?

    This is kind of a new years thing for me as I want to be more entrepreneurial going forward with programming and this is kind of a general question for anyone who may share the same ambitions as me. I have experience with web programming and, although I work full time for a company doing programming, I have some freelance programmers that I work with / employ for small projects. I want to see about taking things to the next level as far as building a small company doing custom development. I'm just not sure how to figure out what niches to target as far as what type of apps to build as demos, etc. I was thinking mobile (maybe Android or Iphone) but am just curious if anyone has any advice / resources. A lot of "web development" seems to end up being just using a CMS like Joomla or Wordpress, for smaller sites, so I want to figure a way to steer clear of this crowd and find some opportunity with companies / entrepreneurs who actually need real programming development done to build apps. Thanks for any advice

  • Are there any tweaks for fixing the appearance of Eclipse Juno on ubuntu?

    As we have previously established ;-) running Eclipse on ubuntu is a bit disappointing on the UI side. Things are even worse now that Juno is out. Are there any tweaks specific to Gtk3 and Juno that help make things better? The new UI maybe needs some getting used to, but I'm not convinced. Padding got much worse with all the extra (useless?) space between panes. The gradient on the toolbar looks ugly, the quick search looks like it needs some more polish, the buttons to switch perspectives maybe would look nicer without the quick search bar, tabs are waaay to big. Not sure the color scheme has been fixed since I'm running a modified theme for the sake of old 3.7 (the infamous white on black tooltips)

  • Good, simple reasons for having multiple environments

    Throughout my career I had worked at companies that had a collection of different environments for different purposes. We always had more or less our desktop environment, a test environment, a QA environment, a staging environment and a production environment. This went for both servers/applications and any data sources we were using. When I started at my current company I found that 90% of the apps were either developed on a desktop environment against production data sources or developed directly on the production server depending on the platform. I wasn't fazed because I was hired in part to make changes to improve the way the development team functioned, which was clear from my interview process. We slowly started to turn the philosophy and pretty soon, most of the apps could be run in either a desktop, test or production environment. Not too long after that staging came around as well. Now most of our developers see the benefit of this methodology and defend it vigilantly. However, we have a number of legacy apps that never got migrated. We also have a number of legacy programmers who think of this as a waste of time. Unfortunately, we got lip service but never full buy-in from management. We got what we thought was a commitment to invest substantially in this about a year ago, but nothing materialized despite the considerable planning that we put into it. Now we are finding that we need more and more environments. We need help from the server/network administration teams for setup and we need participation from the business stakeholders to support the release cycle. We are at a place now where a project can function what I consider "normally" only if you have the right people on the project and the time to set up the proper environments. I'd love to present a complete argument, but management really has no time and interest in hearing me out until there is a critical issue. I can't really articulate the benefits simply as it always just seemed second nature to me. I was wondering if there are any good, simple, irrefutable reasons for the separation of environments that would get managers with no development experience to get behind this idea. Are there any good resources/literature on the topic?

  • Loose Coupling and UX Patterns for Applications Integrations

    I love that software architecture phrase loose coupling. There’s even a whole book about it. And, if you’re involved in enterprise methodology you’ll know just know important loose coupling is to the smart development of applications integrations too. Whether you are integrating offerings from the Oracle partner ecosystem with Fusion apps or applications coexistence scenarios, loose coupling enables the development of scalable, reliable, flexible solutions, with no second-guessing of technology. Another great book Enterprise Integration Patterns: Designing, Building, and Deploying Messaging Solutions tells us about loose coupling benefits of reducing the assumptions that integration parties (components, applications, services, programs, users) make about each other when they exchange information. Eliminating assumptions applies to UI development too. The days of assuming it’s enough to hard code a UI with linking libraries called code on a desktop PC for an office worker are over. The book predates PaaS development and SaaS deployments, and was written when web services and APIs were emerging. Yet it calls out how using middleware as an assumptions-dissolving technology “glue" is central to applications integration. Realizing integration design through a set of middleware messaging patterns (messaging in the sense of asynchronously communicating data) that enable developers to meet the typical business requirements of enterprises requiring integrated functionality is very Fusion-like. User experience developers can benefit from the loose coupling approach too. User expectations and work styles change all the time, and development is now about integrating SaaS through PaaS.   • Set default app for opening an extension [closed]

    I am using Linux Mint 13 with Cinnamon. I have a problem setting an application to open a file with some extension when the application is actually only extracted, not really installed using apt-ger or .deb file. For example - Blender. You can download a .tar.gz from official site which you then extract and you can just run the app. However, it isn't listed in the default apps list (Right Clickon file - Open with other application - Show all installed apps). So now I have to always open the application first and open the file from there. How can I solve this?

  • How to detect a touch on transparent area of an image in a (libgdx) stage?

    Can some one please help to detect a touch on an image which I am using as an actor in a stage. The image is actually a long diagnol brush which has plenty of transparent area. The problem is when I touche the transparent area of the brush image it is also triggering the clicklistener of the image. I need the click listener should only be called when the finger actually touched the visible image not the area which is empty. I am using libgdx-0.9.4 libraries.   • DDD / Layers and legacy systems

    I have to refactor a complex C# app (many dialogs, mixed logic and so on). There is a part managing the communication with special hardware equipments (sending commands and receive data via asynchronous c# callbacks). The code is "spaghetti" with mixed UI/Logic/Communication/etc and my task is to split the layers in a DDD sense. So, to which layer belongs a callback driver routine? The callbacks are creating "bubbles" in the system, up to the UI layer and because of this I cannot enforce the essential principle that any element of a layer depends only on other elements in the same layer or on elements of the layers "beneath" it.   • Disable Alt for window move in gnome-shell

    There are lots of posts on this about Unity, this is about gnome-shell As with other posters, I use apps (Inkscape in particular) that uses Alt-Click and Alt-drag. Gnome-shell is grabbing this off me and thus disabling features in the application. I have tried using ccsm's Move plugin - you can turn this off and you still get Alt-drag window moving. using gconf editor to change /apps/metacity/general/mouse_button_modifier - this has no effect AFAICS. It's really hindering me. Otherwise I find gnome-shell a really productive environment.

  • What tools exist for designing layouts and pre-production templates for Rails 3 applications?

    I develop Rails 3 applications, but prior to this, my background was a designer (typically making mockups in Photoshop and then breaking them down to HTML5/CSS3). Now, some great tools/templates exist for getting working layouts ready for Rails and other apps quickly, e.g., http://railsapps.github.com/rails-composer/. Many are using CSS Frameworks such as Twitter Bootstrap. I'd like to know whether there is a local app (for Mac) that can design layouts, much the way Dreamweaver would, but that are geared towards being utilized in a Twitter Bootstrap situation alongside Ruby (Rails) or Python apps, etc.

  • What are the most important languages to localize for on the App Store?

    It's obvious that to gain more customers on any given platform, one of the most important steps to take would be to localize your software into many languages: as many as possible, ideally. However, with independently developed apps, it tends to be difficult to localize into many different languages, due to not having the budget and / or time to do so. My question is if I were to localize my apps into languages other than English on the iOS App Store, which languages should I prioritize? (Maybe the top three or four most important.) (Also, let's pretend this is a generic app that won't cater more to one language demographic than another.)

  • How to add a daemon to a quickly project

    Currently I'm developing an application with quickly which is divided in two parts: A graphical UI where the user could configure some things, and a daemon which do the most work in the background. I started with the UI, to create some windows for settings and so on. Now I want to start coding the daemon, but I have no clue how to implement the daemon in my quickly project. Could I simply paste the files of the daemon in project folder or is there an implementation method for adding new files to a quickly project? Or do I have to create a new project and merge them together?
