Hey,
I want to measure thread execution time in Java. Now I'm monitoring thread start and end times, but I think it's not so accurate because thread could be suspended during it execution.
I have an web application written in Java, and I have a thread-pool.
The application is huge, and I cannot make major changes, for example, I cannot change log4j.
I am executing a batch process in the thread pool, and I want to log everything that goes is executed to execute that process.
There will always be just one thread active in the thread pool.
Any ideas of how can I do that?
Is it possible to define array in this way in JAVA, otherwise are there an alternative close this definition?
private final int CONST_0= 0;
private final int CONST_1= 1;
private final int CONST_2= 2;
private final int CONST_3= 3;
private final String[] CONST_TXTRECORDS = new String[]
{[CONST_0] = "test0",
{[CONST_1] = "test1",
{[CONST_2] = "test2",
{[CONST_3] = "test3"};
Hey guys,
I am working on a Natural Language parser which examines a sentence in english and extracts some information like name, date etc.
for example: "Lets meet next tuesday at 5 PM at the beach."
So the output will be something like : "Lets meet 15/09/2009 at 1700 hr at the beach"
So basically, what i want to know is that is there any framework or library available for JAVA to do these kind of operations like parsing dates from a sentence and give a output with some specified format.

Pranav
I am trying to dislplay a kannda character in a Java app.
String fonts[] = ge.getAvailableFontFamilyNames();
This shows that there is a font family by name "BRH Kannada"
Font f = new Font("BRH Kannada", Font.PLAIN, 20);
and then I do
button.setFont(f);
now when i set the button text, I have to ideally get the text on button to use the BRH kannada font.
However, what and how should I give the string as?
When I do the following in Java:
System.out.println(2.2-2.0);
It unexpectedly prints the following:

What is this and how can I avoid this?
I'm looking for a lightweight java reporting engine to be embedded in an applet application.
My first option was Jasper Reports, but the jar is over 2Mb, a little too heavy (and too bloated) for my needs. I don't know if there is modular jasper distribution, with funcionalities split in several jars (like html rendering, pdf, excel, compilation, runtime, etc).
I need to preview the report using Swing and print it. PDF export is a plus.
Usually when I'm typing a Java import statement in Eclipse or otherwise referencing a class via the packages that it is in, Eclipse shows a context menu with a list of all classes within that package. There have been several times, however, that it would only shows subpackages within a package and would not show classes within that package.
Does anyone know why this is? It sounds like a setting/preference was changed, but I never knowingly changed anything related to this.
When I use the default java locale on my linux machine it comes out with the US locale settings, where do I change this so that it comes out with the correct locale?
I'm looking for a Java ORM that works from database reflection - I need to just point it at a DB, and start being able to walk through the entire set of tables, etc.
Ideas?

Is it possible to have multiple authentication methods for a java servlet? For example, have form based authentication in addition to open id based authentication so users can choose how they log in.
Can anyone recommend a tutorial on how to write a java servlet which connects to ms sql server and manages data?
I'm trying to write something which pulls products out of one database and inserts them into a stored procedure located on another database.

Hi - how do I push server alerts to tray apps in java without using xmpp or other heavy protocols?
Do you recommend a way to accomplish this?
I was planning to write an app which uses URLConnection on a server equipped with Comet but I doubt if that would work as the client requires a JS to be invoked and URLConnection is not a browser..
What is the best way to push instead of using a proprietary client-server approach?
Hi all,
I've been programming in Java for a few courses in the University and I have the following question:
Is it methodologically accepted that every class should implement an interface? Is it considered bad practice not to do so? Can you describe a situation where it's not a good idea to use interfaces?
Thanks.
Hi,
I found Facelift which can basically generate html headings as images (with "nice font") on the fly. Does something similar exist for Java (couldn't find one myself)?
Cheers,

Hi,
I have to convert an incoming String field into a BigDecimal field that would represent a valid amount of money, for example:
String amount = "1000";
BigDecimal valid_amount = convert(amount);
print(valid_amount.toString())//1000.00
What is the right API to use convert a String into a valid amount of money in Java (eg: apache commons library)?
Thanks in advance,
