  • Microsoft Word files have weird icons suddenly?

    All of a sudden, my Microsoft Office files have the generic file icon, and it happens with Powerpoint and Word, but not Excel. I can open the files just fine, and I tried restarting my computer, creating new files, clicking F5 on the desktop, turning off my Windows XP theme patcher, and none of them worked, any ideas? EDIT: I've also noticed that it happened to the following programs: Windows Live Messenger, iTunes, and Skype, so not just MS Office. Yet, some are still fine like IE, Paint, GIMP, Paint.NET, a few web browsers, etc.

    We're currently testing Microsoft Dynamics CRM hosted by Fpweb. I've been asked by the lead on the project how we can increase the speed at which CRM pages in IE load. The delay seems reasonable to me for a virtual server located across the country. Has anyone succeeded in speeding things up with aggressive caching (i.e. a WAN accelerator) or by some other means? Do your employees complain about the speed of hosted Dynamics CRM?

  • How to debug a web service written in PHP?

    Hello, I've got a nice question here :) I need to debug my web service written in PHP. Its client is written in C#. After a couple of days of searching I realized this is not an easy task. At least it seems nobody knows the right solution. What is the problem in, actually? We have 2 popular PHP debugging libraries : PHP Debugger from NuSphere and XDebug extension. The problem is they both are controlled from URL query string or with the help of cookies. For example, to enable debugging with PHP Debugger you need to add ?DBGSESSID=xxx parameter to your URL or to have DBGSESSID cookie. But when your web service is called from the external client, the client doesn't have a cookie and doesn't add DBGSESSID url parameter. So how can we debug in this situation? PS. I don't want to write to log files, see request and response headers/data or something like this. I want normal step-by-step debugging and breakpoints. Anyone?

  • Problem Implementing StructureMap in VB.Net Conversion of SharpArchitecture

    I work in a VB.Net environment and have recently been tasked with creating an MVC enviroment to use as a base to work from. I decided to convert the latest SharpArchitecture release (Q3 2009) into VB, which on the whole has gone fine after a bit of hair pulling. I came across a problem with Castle Windsor where my custom repository interface (lives in the core/domain project) that was reference in the constructor of my test controller was not getting injected with the concrete implementation (from the data project). I hit a brick wall with this so basically decided to switch out Castle Windsor for StructureMap. I think I have implemented this ok as everything compiles and runs and my controller ran ok when referencing a custom repository interface. It appears now that I have/or cannot now setup my generic interfaces up properly (I hope this makes sense so far as I am new to all this). When I use IRepository(Of T) (wanting it to be injected with a concrete implementation of Repository(Of Type)) in the controller constructor I am getting the following runtime error: "StructureMap Exception Code: 202 No Default Instance defined for PluginFamily SharpArch.Core.PersistenceSupport.IRepository`1[[DebtRemedy.Core.Page, DebtRemedy.Core, Version=1.0.0.0, Culture=neutral, PublicKeyToken=null]], SharpArch.Core, Version=1.0.0.0, Culture=neutral, PublicKeyToken=b5f559ae0ac4e006" Here are my code excerpts that I am using (my project is called DebtRemedy).   • ASP.net User Controls and business entities

    Hi all, I am currently developing some user controls so that I can use them at several places within a project. One control is a about editing a list of addresses for a customer. Since this needs to be done at several places within the project I want to make it a simple user control. The user control contains a repeater control. By default the repeater displays one address item to be edited. If more addresses need to be added, the user can click on a button to append an additional address to be entered. The user control should work for creating new addresses as well as editing existing ones. The address business entity looks something like this: public class Address { public string Street { get; set; } public City City { get; set; } public Address(string street, City city) { Check.NotNullOrEmpty(street); Check.NotNull(city); Street = street; City = city; } } As you can see an address can only be instantiated if there is a street and a city. Now my idea was that the user control exposes a collection property called Addresses. The getter of this property collects the addresses from the repeater and return it in a collection. The setter would databind the addresses to be edited to the repeater. Like this: public partial class AddressEditControl : System.Web.UI.UserControl { public IEnumerable<Address> Addresses { get { IList<Address> addresses = new List<Address>(); // collect items from repeater and create addresses foreach (RepeaterItem item in addressRepeater.Items) { // collect values from repeater item addresses.Add(new Address(street, city)); } return addresses; } set { addressRepeater.DataSource = value; addressRepeater.DataBind(); } } } First I liked this approach since it is object oriented makes it very easy to reuse the control. But at some place in my project I wanted to use this control so a user could enter some addresses. And I wanted to pre-fill the street input field of each repeater item since I had that data so the user doesn't need to enter it all by his self. Now the problem is that this user control only accepts addresses in a valid state (since the address object has only one constructor). So I cannot do: IList<Addresses> addresses = new List<Address>(); addresses.Add(new Address("someStreet", null)); // i dont know the city yet (user has to find it out) addressControl.Addresses = addresses; So the above is not possible since I would get an error from address because the city is null. Now my question: How would I create such a control? ;) I was thinking about using an Address DTO instead of a real address, so it can later be mapped to an address. That way I can pass in and out an address collection which addresses don't need to be valid. Or did I misunderstood the way user controls work? Are there any best practices?

  • ASP.Net/C# File Upload Progress Display

    I am having a hard time figuring out how to do a "Please wait while file is uploading" message when the user submits the following form. So far the application works to specification with regards to checking files and uploading to the server. You will see some java script below, this is there to allow me to fake out the style of the file up load buttons so that it matches the rest of the site. I have tried to use the ASP.Net Ajax controls to do this however the updateprogress panel would not show up. In further reading it was explained that this has something to do with the Asynchronous transfer that the file upload control uses when you issue a PostedFile.SaveAs("filename") command. I also found a site that refereed to using an iframe to do the job. I'm not really sure if that's the best way to go about doing this or not so I'm asking you the professionals of stackoverflow for help to try and resolve this issue.   • Why have or haven't you moved to ASP.NET MVC yet?

    I find myself on the edge of trying out ASP.NET MVC but there is still "something" holding me back. Are you still waiting to try it, and if so, why? If you finally decided to use it, what helped you get over your hesitation? I'm not worried about it from a technical point of view; I know the pros and cons of web forms vs MVC. My concerns are more on the practical side. Will Microsoft continue to support ASP.NET MVC if they don't reach some critical threshold of developers/customers using it? Are customers willing to try ASP.NET MVC? Have you had to convince a customer to use it? How did that go? Are there major sites using ASP.NET MVC (besides SO)? Could you provide links if you have them? Did you try ASP.NET MVC and found yourself regretting it? If so, what do you regret? If you have any other concerns preventing you from using MVC.NET, what are they? If you had concerns but felt they were addressed and now use MVC.NET, could you list them as well? Thanks

  • NEED your opinion on .net Profile class VS session vars

    To save trips to sql db in my older apps, I store *dozens of data points about the current user in an array and then store the array in a session. For example, info that might be used repeatedly during user’s session might be stored… Dim a(7) as string a(0) = “FirstName” a(1) = “LastName” a(2) = “Address” a(3) = “Address2” a(4) = “City” a(5) = “State” a(6) = “Zip” session.add(“s_a”, a) *Some apps have an array 100 in size. That is something I learned in my asp classic days. Referencing the correct index can be laborsome and I find it difficult to go back and add another data point in the array grouped with like data. For example, suppose I need to add Middle Initial to the array as a design alteration. Unless I redo the whole index mapping, I have to stick Middle Initial in the next open slot, which might be in the 50s. NOW, I am considering doing something easier to reference each time (eliminating the need to know the index of the value wanted). So I am looking to do this… session.add(“Firstname”, “FirstName”) session.add(“Lastname”, “LastName”) session.add(“Address”, “Address”) etc. BUT, before I do this, I would like some guidance. I am afraid this might be less efficient, even though easier to use. I don’t know if a new session object is created for each data point or if there is only one session object, and I am adding a name/value pair to that object? If I am adding a name/value pair to a single object, that seems like a good idea. Does anyone know? Or is there a more preferred way? Built-in Profile class? Re: Profile class I have an internal debate about scope. It seems that the .net Profile class is good for storing app-SPECIFIC user settings (i.e. style theme, object display properties, user role, etc.) The examples I give are information whose values are selected/edited by the user to customize the application experience. This information is not typically stored/edited elsewhere in the app db. But when you have data that 1) is stored already in the app db and 2) can be altered by other users (in this case: company reps may update client's status, address, etc.), then the persistence of the Profile data may be an issue. In this case, the Profile would need to be reset at the beginning and dropped like a session.abandon at the end of each user's session to prevent reloading info that had since been edited by someone. I believe this is possible, but not sure Currently, I use the session array to store both scopes, app-specific and user-specific data. If my session plan is good, I think I will create a class to set/get values from the session also. I appreciate your thoughts. I would like to know how others have handled this type of situation.        Introduction :          I found two posts in ASP.NET MVC forums complaining that they are getting exception, The type XXX is defined in an assembly that is not referenced, after upgrading thier application into Visual Studio 2010 and .NET Framework 4.0 at here and here .   Description :           The reason why they are getting the above exception is the use of new clean web.config without referencing the assemblies which were presents in ASP.NET 3.5 web.config. The quick solution for this problem is to add the old assemblies in new web.config.          <assemblies>             <add assembly="System.Web.Abstractions, Version=4.0.0.0, Culture=neutral, PublicKeyToken=31BF3856AD364E35"/>             <add assembly="System.Web.Routing, Version=4.0.0.0, Culture=neutral, PublicKeyToken=31BF3856AD364E35"/>             <add assembly="System.Web.Mvc, Version=2.0.0.0, Culture=neutral, PublicKeyToken=31BF3856AD364E35"/>              <add assembly="System.Data.Entity, Version=4.0.0.0, Culture=neutral, PublicKeyToken=b77a5c561934e089" />              <add assembly="System.Data.Linq, Version=4.0.0.0, Culture=neutral, publicKeyToken=b77a5c561934e089" />          </assemblies>    How It works :            Currently i have not tested the above scenario in ASP.NET 4.0 because i have not yet get it. But the above scenario can easily be tested and verified in VS 2008. Just Open the root web.config and remove           <add assembly="System.Core, Version=3.5.0.0, Culture=neutral, PublicKeyToken=B77A5C561934E089"/>             Even you add the reference of System.Core in your project, you will still get the above exception because aspx pages are compiled in separate assembly. You can check this yourself by checking Show Detailed Compiler Output: below in the yellow screen of death, you will find something,/out:"C:\WINDOWS\Microsoft.NET\Framework\v2.0.50727\Temporary ASP.NET Files\root\e907aee4\5fa0acc8\App_Web_y5rd6bdg.dll"             This shows that aspx pages are compiled in separate assembly in Temporary ASP.NET Files.Summary :             After getting the above exception make sure to add the assemblies in web.config or add the Assembly directive at Page level. Hopefully this will helps to solve your problem.

  • SharePoint Web Part Constructor Fires Twice When Adding it to the Page (and has a different security

    We had some exciting times debugging an interesting issue with SharePoint 2007 Web Parts.  We had some code in staging that had been running just fine for weeks and had not been touched or changed in about the same amount of time.  However, when we tried to move the web part into a different staging environment, the part started throwing a security exception when we tried to add it to a page.  After a bit of debugging, we determined that the web part was throwing the exception while trying to access the SPGroups property on the SharePoint site.  This was pretty strange because we were logged in as an admin and the code was working perfectly fine before.  During the debugging process, however, we found out that the web part constructor was being fired twice.  On one request, the security context did not seem to have everything it needed in order to run.  On the other request, the security context was populated with the user context with the user making the request (like it normally is).  Moving the security code outside of the constructor seems to have fixed the issue. Why the discrepancy between the two staging environments?  Turns out we deployed the part originally, then deployed an update with the security code.  Since the part was never "added" to the page after the code updates were made (we just deployed a new assembly to make the updates), we never saw the problem.  It seems as though the constructor fires twice when you are adding the web part to the page, and when you run the web part from the web part gallery.  My only thought on why this would occur is that SharePoint is instantiating an instance to get some information from it - which is odd because you would think that would happen with reflection without requiring a new object.  Anyway, the work around is to just not put anything security related inside the constructor, or to do a good job accounting for the possibility of the security context not being present if you are adding the item to the page.   • Retrieve the full ASP.NET Form Buffer as a String

    Did it again today: For logging purposes I needed to capture the full Request.Form data as a string and while it’s pretty easy to retrieve the buffer it always takes me a few minutes to remember how to do it. So I finally wrote a small helper function to accomplish this since this comes up rather frequently especially in debugging scenarios or in the immediate window. Here’s the quick function to get the form buffer as string: /// <summary> /// Returns the content of the POST buffer as string /// </summary> /// <returns></returns> public static string FormBufferToString() { HttpRequest Request = HttpContext.Current.Request; if (Request.TotalBytes > 0) return Encoding.Default.GetString(Request.BinaryRead(Request.TotalBytes)); return string.Empty; } Clearly a simple task, but handy to have in your library for reuse. You probably don’t want to call this if you have a massive inbound form buffer, or if the data you’re retrieving is binary. It’s probably a good idea to check the inbound content type before calling this function with something like this: var formBuffer = string.Empty; if (Request.ContentType.StartsWith("text/") || Request.ContentType == "application/x-www-form-urlencoded") ) { formBuffer = FormBufferToString(); } to ensure you’re working only on content types you can actually view as text.   • Help me select a "Simpler" target to create a new language: .NET, LLVM, Go, Own VM

    Lets define "Simple". This is my first language. I have no previous experience I will not dedicate +4 years to learn it properly. I'm a professional software [developer], but as an amateur in this area, I want instant gratification. If the idea shows a future, I could rewrite it. I don't want to do everything from scratch. In fact, if there exists a way to get GO (for example), change its syntax, add some sugar, give some extra functions and leave intact everything else, that would be perfect! From the example of coffescript/scala I think is better to build on top of some rich runtime like .NET/GO so I don't need to rewrite everything. HOWEVER, if is better other way, no problem for the first try! I want it in a week. I need it in a week so it will really take a month. Then it truly takes 3 months. But I don't want to put more that 3 months on this. I could reduce the scope of my language, but I hope the tools will help me a lot... I want to build a new language. Similar to python, but typed. I wonder what to build it on top of. I like the idea of building on top of GO. To get their sane (IMHO) OO paradigm (I plan to do the same, using interfaces, not inheritance), get goroutines and some other stuff. In my naive thinking I imagine that spit another language could help me to debug it more easily. However, look like everyone is building on top of something like .NET (don't like Java), LLVM or make it own VM. I read http://createyourproglang.com/ (great!) and the part of the VM look "easy" to me. So, what I need is the proper criteria and question I need to know in advance to have a fair shot at make this.
