  • Upgrading Fedora on Amazon to 12 but getting libssl.so.* & libcrypto.so.* are missing

    I am upgrading to Fedora 12 on a Amazon EC2 using help here: http://www.ioncannon.net/system-administration/894/fedora-12-bootable-root-ebs-on-ec2/ I managed to do a 64 bit instance OK, however facing some problems with a standard one. On the final bit of the install from 11 to 12 I am getting an error: Error: Missing Dependency: libcrypto.so.8 is needed by package httpd-tools-2.2.1.5-1.fc11.1.i586 (installed) Error: Missing Dependency: libssl.so.8 is needed by package httpd-tools-2.2.1.5-1.fc11.1.i586 (installed) This is referenced in the comments from the link above but all it says is: Q: Apache failed, or libssl.so.* & libcrypto.so.* are missing A: These versions are mssing the symlinks they require. Easy fix, go symlink them to the newest versions in /lib However I am afraid I don't know how to do this. If it is any help I tried running the command locate libssl.so and got: /lib/libssl.so.0.9.8b /lib/libssl.so.6

  • TFS 2010 Check-in Policies

    Currently we have check-in policies that are implemented by installing the TFS 2010 Power Tools on each developer machine. I was wondering if there was a way we could store those policies centrally within the TFS Server itself and push them out to the Developer machines in a group policy fashion without having to install anything additional on the Developer machines as realistically we only want the Power Tools on a couple of people's machines. I can't seem to find any documentation on how to do this or if it's possible so if someone could point me in the right direction I'd be very grateful.

  • Fastest booting Linux ditribution on a live-cd

    I'm looking for a linux distro with the following: Boots quickly, as fast as possible. Has expected tools such as file browser, a web browser, etc. Doesn't need to have extraneous recovery stuff such as partition editors, and what not. These are the tools I have and use already: ophcrack Ultimate Boot CD for Windows (UBCD4Win) chntpw (Offline NT Password and Registry Editor) Hiren's BootCD gparted or Parted Magic Ubuntu nubuntu Any and all suggestions are welcome :-) The primary objective is to get a quick booting linux distro that I can grab / delete / move / copy files with. Currently, I prefer using ophcrack, it boots in (relatively) fast and I can manipulate files well. The one that takes the longest is ubuntu of course.

    Possible Duplicate: Securely erasing all data from a hard drive In my personal collection are an increasing number of relatively new drives, only put on the shelf due to upgrades; in the past I have never sold hard drives with used machines for fear of having the encrypted password databases that have been stored on them compromised, but as their numbers increase I find myself more tempted to do so (due to the $$$ I know they're worth on the used market). What tools then exist to make the recovery of data from said drives difficult to the extent that selling them could be justified? Another way of saying this would be: what tools/method exist for making the attempts at recovery of any data previously stored on a certain drive impractical? I assume that it is always possible to recover data from a drive that is in working order. I assume also there are some methods for preventing recovery of data due a program called dban, and one particular feature in macOSX that deals with permanently deleting data from a disk.

  • How to retrieve connection details of CheckPoint SSL Network Extender?

    My workplace uses a Java-based VPN tool named CheckPoint SSL Network Extender. I would like to configure the VPN connection myself using stock OS tools, because I find the applet to be rather unstable. How would I go about getting all of the connection details needed to manually connect to the VPN? My workplace only supports the official client. When I am connected with the Java applet, if I run ipconfig /all I can see that a hidden network connection is created named Check Point Virtual Network Adapter For SSL Network Extender - Packet Scheduler Miniport. I can see the various IP and DNS details there as well. However, because I need to log in to the applet-based tool, I presume I need to export some kind of key in order to use OS tools to configure this. Is this even possible? Answers for any OS are great although I am using Windows XP to test, and also want to use Linux clients.

    I have written an app that we want to distribute to a large number of customers to be used as the shell program when they log onto their server with a particular admin account. I have figured out how to change the starting program by going to Administrative Tools->Computer Management->System Tools->Local Users and Groups->Users, selecting the properties for the user, going to the Environment tab, and changing the program file name under "Starting program" to my new app. But is there a way I could do this with some code that could be sent out and run on all these servers?

    I have a Windows 7 amd64 box where one directory is shared: local path is d:\drop\ remote path is \\aloism\drop from SMB point of view, Everyone has Read and Write permission ACLs for the folder are set so that all authenticated users have read and write permissions:NT AUTHORITY\Authenticated Users:(OI)(CI)C (which is inherited to all levels below) Now I create a symbolic link within the structure of the directory: D:\drop>mklink /d tools2 tools symbolic link created for tools2 <<===>> tools The problem is that I can't access this new directory from any of the remote machines (a Windows 7 box and a Windows XP box—both behave the same way): C:\>dir \\aloism\drop\tools2\ Volume in drive \\aloism\drop is droot Volume Serial Number is FA73-1897 Directory of \\aloism\drop\tools2 File Not Found How can I make it work?     RELATED: This question has led me to ask this one. I had to change our unnamed crappy ADSL router to a crappy Comtrend CT-5361 WiFi router, now every WiFi connection to the domain doesn't work correctly: Joining the domain is impossible (see related question) Logging into the domain takes ages Authentication usually fails Question: How to debug this and pinpoint the exact problem? I have no enough knowledge on either WiFi networks or on Active Directory to know which connections are made at which stages nor how to check what's happening at the wireless level to compare what should happen to what is happening. I'm looking for resources to learn what should be happening and tools to detect what is actually happening (I expect a sniffer should be enough, but if there are better, more specialized tools, that'd be great).

    So I have a drive which either suffered from hardware error or, possibly, got a little shock from badly configured Windows unattended install started on the same PC (the drive in question wasn't the install drive..). Quick exam shows that filesystem is seemingly intact, as some data recovery tools work with it (UnFormat rated it as "Excellent"). This may mean that a copy of partition table exists on disk, or a copy of MFT survived whatever happened, or.. Any idea how to restore partition tables/FS header, add a drive letter thus let Windows to mount the filesystem as if nothing happened? (I guess there must be tools of this kind)

  • Possible to run system-config-network during %post kickstart?

    Hello, I'm currently trying to figure out a smart way to set IP, hostname, gateway and DNS settings during a kickstart (with user input during the kickstart). Doing this with firstboot after the install is not acceptable, so this must be done during %post. I've tried to run the system-config-network tool during post in tty6: #!/bin/sh chvt 6 exec < /dev/tty6 > /dev/tty6 /usr/bin/system-config-network-tui This doesn't work since for some reason I'm unable to catch user input. I would prefer to use built in tools to change this during post, rather than write my own bash script to do this, since using the provided tools is less likely to break anything. Does someone done anything like this or similar, and made it work? Thanks

  • How to cache dynamic javascript/jquery/ajax/json content with Akamai

    Trying to wrap my head around how things are cached on a CDN and it is new territory for me. In the document we received about sending in environment requests, it says "Dynamically-generated content will not benefit much from EdgeSuite". I feel like this is a simplified statement and there has to be a way to make it so you cache dynamically generated content if the tools are configured correctly. The site we are working with runs off a wordpress database, and uses javascript and ajax to build the pages, based on the json objects that php scripts have generated. The process - user's browser this URL, browser talks to edgesuite tools which will have cached certain pre-defined elements, and then requests from the host web server anything that is not cached, once edgesuite has compiled a combination of the two, it sends that information back to the browser. Can we not simply cache all json objects (and of course images, js, css) and therefore the web browser never has to hit the host server's database, at which point in essence, we have cached our dynamic content? Does anyone have any pointers on the most efficient configuration for this type of system -- Akamai/CDN -- to served javascript/ajax/json generated pages that ideally already hit pre-cached json data? Any and all feedback is welcome!

  • Parallelism in .NET – Introduction

    Parallel programming is something that every professional developer should understand, but is rarely discussed or taught in detail in a formal manner.  Software users are no longer content with applications that lock up the user interface regularly, or take large amounts of time to process data unnecessarily.  Modern development requires the use of parallelism.  There is no longer any excuses for us as developers. Learning to write parallel software is challenging.  It requires more than reading that one chapter on parallelism in our programming language book of choice… Today’s systems are no longer getting faster with each generation; in many cases, newer computers are actually slower than previous generation systems.  Modern hardware is shifting towards conservation of power, with processing scalability coming from having multiple computer cores, not faster and faster CPUs.  Our CPU frequencies no longer double on a regular basis, but Moore’s Law is still holding strong.  Now, however, instead of scaling transistors in order to make processors faster, hardware manufacturers are scaling the transistors in order to add more discrete hardware processing threads to the system. This changes how we should think about software.  In order to take advantage of modern systems, we need to redesign and rewrite our algorithms to work in parallel.  As with any design domain, it helps tremendously to have a common language, as well as a common set of patterns and tools. For .NET developers, this is an exciting time for parallel programming.  Version 4 of the .NET Framework is adding the Task Parallel Library.  This has been back-ported to .NET 3.5sp1 as part of the Reactive Extensions for .NET, and is available for use today in both .NET 3.5 and .NET 4.0 beta. In order to fully utilize the Task Parallel Library and parallelism, both in .NET 4 and previous versions, we need to understand the proper terminology.  For this series, I will provide an introduction to some of the basic concepts in parallelism, and relate them to the tools available in .NET.

    We are very excited about this show. John and Jeff sat down with Scott Davis and his son Tommy to talk about Gamification and Programming for Kids. Tommy is nine years old and the Iowa Code Camp was his second time presenting. Scott and Tommy introduce a package called Scratch that was developed by MIT to teach kids about logic and interacting with programming using sprites. Tommy's favorite experience with programming right now is Lego Mindstorms because of the interaction with the Legos and the development. Most adults when they get started with development also got started with interacting more with the physical machines. The next generation is given amazing tools, but the tools tend to be sealed and the physical interaction is not there. With some of these alternative hobby platforms like Legos, Arduino, and .NET Micro Framework, kids can write some amazing application and see their code work with physical movement and interaction with devices and sensors. In the second half of this podcast, Scott talks about how companies can us Gamification to prompt employees to interact with software and processes in the organization. We see gamification throughout the consumer space and you need to do is open up the majority of the apps on our phones or tablets and there is some interaction point to give the user a reward for using the tool. Scott gets into his product Qonqr which is described as the board game Risk and Foursquare together. Quent continued his presentation with excellent information and demos of the Architecture Tools, focusing on Architecture Explorer and UML.     It was only a matter of time before someone chained together dozens of Raspberry Pi boards into a serviceable super computer; read on to see how a team of Southampton scientists built a 64-core machine using them. From the University of South Hampton press release: Professor Cox comments: “As soon as we were able to source sufficient Raspberry Pi computers we wanted to see if it was possible to link them together into a supercomputer. We installed and built all of the necessary software on the Pi starting from a standard Debian Wheezy system image and we have published a guide so you can build your own supercomputer.” The racking was built using Lego with a design developed by Simon and James, who has also been testing the Raspberry Pi by programming it using free computer programming software Python and Scratch over the summer. The machine, named “Iridis-Pi” after the University’s Iridis supercomputer, runs off a single 13 Amp mains socket and uses MPI (Message Passing Interface) to communicate between nodes using Ethernet. The whole system cost under £2,500 (excluding switches) and has a total of 64 processors and 1Tb of memory (16Gb SD cards for each Raspberry Pi). Professor Cox uses the free plug-in ‘Python Tools for Visual Studio’ to develop code for the Raspberry Pi.     Its been a long time since I blogged.  Primarily due to Tech Ed India, the ongoing Great Indian Developer Summit (GIDS 2010) and the related travels.  However, here is a quick post with a few updates.  Visual Studio 2010 RTMed in India during Tech Ed.  We had the privilege of having Soma our Senior VP launch VS 2010 RTM in Bangalore, India, during Tech Ed India 2010.   With that we also had Silverlight 4 getting RTMed during the same week. Earlier I had written posts around using the VS 2010 Beta, RC and the corresponding Silverlight, WCF RIA bits etc., and getting them all to work together.  Now that, both VS 2010 and Silverlight have RTMed, I wanted to post a quick update on the necessary downloads. Visual Studio 2010 RTM can be downloaded from MSDN Visual Studio site  If you are doing Silverlight 4 development with Visual studio, then you can download the Silverlight 4 Tools RC2 for Visual Studio  Then, if you are developing with WCF RIA Services, you can download the WCF RIA Services RC 2 for SL4 and VS 2010 And finally, if you want to use WCF RIA Services in ASP.NET you would require the Domain DataSource control.  Also, to use some of the additional Service Utility tools, you would require the WCF RIA Services Toolkit.  You can download the same from WCF RIA Services Toolkit April 2010 Once you have installed all the above, you should be able to see the following in your add-remove programs WCF RIA Services v1.0 for Visual Studio 2010 (Version 4.0.50401.0) WCF RIA Services Toolkit (Version 4.0.50401.0) Microsoft Silverlight (Version 4.0.50401.0) Microsoft Silverlight 4 SDK (Version 4.0.50401.0) Also, you would need the Expression Blend 4 for designing the apps for Silverlight 4.  You can download the release candidate from here Thats it.  You are all set for development with Visual Studio 2010 and Silverlight 4, WCF RIA Services.
