• Issues with web hosting at home

  I want to host a small personal website at home. One basic problem I am hitting is, From inside home network, I cannot access my domain name. I have to use the local ip (something like 192.168.1.4) to access the website. This ip is the desktop which is hosting the website. Because of this mapping, I have issues setting up a simple wordpress blog on it too. How do I get past this issue? edit:0 when I try to access www.example.com (my domain) from within my home network, I get redirected to my router login. PS: 1) I am using dyndns service to map my non-static ip to my domain name. 2) My portforwarding works fine.

• Obtaining positional information in the IEnumerable Select extension method

  This blog entry is intended to provide a narrow and brief look into a way to use the Select extension method that I had until recently overlooked. Every developer who is using IEnumerable extension methods to work with data has been exposed to the Select extension method, because it is a pretty critical piece of almost every query over a collection of objects.  The method is defined on type IEnumerable and takes as its argument a function that accepts an item from the collection and returns an object which will be an item within the returned collection.  This allows you to perform transformations on the source collection.  A somewhat contrived example would be the following code that transforms a collection of strings into a collection of anonymous objects: 1: var media = new[] {"book", "cd", "tape"}; 2: var transformed = media.Select( item => 3: { 4: Media = item 5: } ); This code transforms the array of strings into a collection of objects which each have a string property called Media. If every developer using the LINQ extension methods already knows this, why am I blogging about it?  I’m blogging about it because the method has another overload that I hadn’t seen before I needed it a few weeks back and I thought I would share a little about it with whoever happens upon my blog.  In the other overload, the function defined in the first overload as: 1: Func<TSource, TResult> is instead defined as: 1: Func<TSource, int, TResult>   The additional parameter is an integer representing the current element’s position in the enumerable sequence.  I used this information in what I thought was a pretty cool way to compare collections and I’ll probably blog about that sometime in the near future, but for now we’ll continue with the contrived example I’ve already started to keep things simple and show how this works.  The following code sample shows how the positional information could be used in an alternating color scenario.  I’m using a foreach loop because IEnumerable doesn’t have a ForEach extension, but many libraries do add the ForEach extension to IEnumerable so you can update the code if you’re using one of these libraries or have created your own. 1: var media = new[] {"book", "cd", "tape"}; 2: foreach (var result in media.Select( 3: (item, index) => 4: new { Item = item, Index = index })) 5: { 6: Console.ForegroundColor = result.Index % 2 == 0 7: ?   I have the impression that Delphi isn't very popular anymore. But now at work I had to make some changes to an old Delphi program that we are still using. I used Borland Developer Studio 2006 and it was very pleasant and intuitive to work with, even though I had practically no previous exposure to it. Is Delphi still widely-used and I am simply not aware of it or are there other reasons for its decline?

• Do you test your SQL/HQL/Criteria ?

  Do you test your SQL or SQL generated by your database framework? There are frameworks like DbUnit that allow you to create real in-memory database and execute real SQL. But its very hard to use(not developer-friendly so to speak), because you need to first prepare test data(and it should not be shared between tests). P.S. I don't mean mocking database or framework's database methods, but tests that make you 99% sure that your SQL is working even after some hardcore refactoring.

• Mixing self signed certs with traditional SSL

  I have a traditional SSL cert going to a subdomain secure.mydomain.com on my domain. My host required me to have a dedicated IP in order to do this. I would also like to use HTTPS on my site for when I log into WordPress, etc. and since this is just for me, I don't mind self signing it and clicking through the scary messages. Is there a way to use a self signed cert for mydomain.com/wp-admin (just for me) when I already am on a dedicated IP that already has a traditional SSL cert for normal users on secure.mydomain.com? (FWIW, I'm on WHM without root access.)

• Ubuntu 14.04 has a bunch of old kernel directories

  I saw in Disk Usage Analyzer I have 3.13.0-xx for 8 minor versions of the kernel in /lib/modules. Each is around 200MB. I remember having to go through in Synaptic and remove those old Linux versions before, but hasn't this bug been fixed? Is it just paranoid default setting, that perhaps all of the last half dozen kernels might become unbootable, so it keeps each old one around? Or do I have some developer setting enabled by accident that causes this?

• Set nomodeset in usb installation (efi loader with iso)

  I'm working with the studyblast solution (http://studyblast.wordpress.com/2011/08/14/guide-mac-os-x-lion-how-to-boot-a-linux-live-system-from-a-usb-drive-how-to-update-any-ocz-ssds-firmware/) to creating a live usb for osx. I managed to get Ubuntu booted but the screen looks like a corrupt/glitch image. I can just about make out the clock on the bottom right and a few icons. I've been told that this is an easy fix and that nomodeset needs to be set for the graphics card but all the solutions i find are for a hard drive installed Ubuntu where you can cd in and edit the grub file - how do you do this is it's in an iso?   I am running Ubuntu 12.04 in a Virtual Box as guest OS. Today I have tried to enable all functions of my graphic card under Ubuntu. But all my efforts were off the mark... because my experience with Linux is relatively small... I have tried the procedure which is described as in http://sn0v.wordpress.com/2012/05/11/installing-cuda-on-ubuntu-12-04/. Running the cuda-filepack always lead to an error like "installing driver canceled". Then I have tried to install the Bumblebee project. But I always get the error that the bumblebee daemon is not started. After some internet research I found a test-command lspci -nn | grep '[030[02]]' which results in 00:02.0 VGA compatible controller [0300]: InnoTek ... [80ee:beef] I've been trying to activate the card you for hours without success. Could you please give me some hints how to activate CUDA? Kind regards

  In my country most of the sites are built using PHP and MySQL. Half of those sites use vbulletin and Wordpress. When it comes to companies, ministries and universities they use ASP.NET. I am not sure what should I learn to get more money as freelacer? Should I learn ASP.NET and focus my area to build companies and universities' sites? (And the question if they will know me one day and ask me to build any of their sites or not?) Or should I learn PHP and focus my business on people's sites and maybe some small formal sites?
