  • Strange focus bug in Firefox (chrome vs content)

    Here is a strange bug I'm experiencing in Firefox: I can only use either the chrome, or the content, not both at the same time! For example, I can click on tabs and the toolbar icons, focus the search bar and write in it as well as the address bar, but if I try to click on anything in the content (eg a link or a textfield to write something), then nothing happens. The mouse pointer doesn't change either, it just stays a pointer when I hover over things, and the links I hover don't react either. But if I alt-tab to another program (or click on it in the taskbar), then back to Firefox, then I can use the area that I click on. So if I click somewhere on the webpage to get focus back to Firefox, then I can click on links and write things (like this text), but I cannot click on tabs or refresh or anything else in the chrome. I can't even click on the minimize, restore and close icons! To get focus back on the chrome I have to alt-tab to another program, and then click on the chrome to get back to Firefox to be able to use the chrome again. I've tried closing and starting it again, but the bug is still there. I have experienced this before, but I don't remember what I did to fix it. This bug seems to occur sometimes when I wake up the computer from standby, but I leave by computer in standby all the time, so that is not the only factor.

    Hello everyone. I'm new to Linux and Ubuntu is my first distribution. I have chosen Ubuntu because I want to learn more about Linux. I'm under time constraints and need to setup a server as soon as possible. I have Ubuntu Desktop and Ubuntu Server setup via VMWare Fusion on my MacBook Pro. I installed everything I need on the server edition, but it feels way over my head. I have no experience with CLI. Can I just use Ubuntu Desktop to run my Web server for the time being while I learn CLI? I basically need to run Apache, PHP, MySQL, phpMyAdmin, Python and Django. Should I be using MAMP? Thanks.

    I have Ubuntu 12.04 LTS and I am experiencing some problems. I didn't have Ubuntu 12.04 on a drive to install it but I did have Ubuntu 14.04. So I installed it and downloaded Ubuntu 12.04 using Ubuntu 14. Now, I have 2 home partitions and 2 boot partitions. One home and boot is mounted at /media and the other one is /home and /boot. I cannot get rid of /media/HOME and /media/BOOT even using Gparted. How do I get remove them?

    I have followed the instructions on numerous pages, such as this, which say to run the following commands: sudo add-apt-repository "deb http://archive.canonical.com/ lucid partner" sudo apt-get update sudo apt-get install sun-java6-jdk However, when I do this I still get the following error: me@mycomputer:~$ sudo apt-get install sun-java6-jdk Reading package lists... Done Building dependency tree Reading state information... Done Package sun-java6-jdk is not available, but is referred to by another package. This may mean that the package is missing, has been obsoleted, or is only available from another source E: Package sun-java6-jdk has no installation candidate I realize Java is available from many other sources, but for reasons that I can't get into here I must use this specific version.   • SSH broken after hostname change on EC2-hosted Ubuntu

    I changed my instance's hostname using the hostname utility and then set it in /etc/hostname so that the new name survives reboot. My main motivation was for differentiating between instances at the prompt using the \h format in PS1. EDIT I also changed permissions on my home directory. I made my home directory group writeable. END EDIT Now I can no longer SSH into the machine. The short of it is the error Permission denied (publickey). Running ssh -v, the more verbose output is: debug1: Authentications that can continue: publickey debug1: Next authentication method: publickey debug1: Offering RSA public key: /Users/dmitry/.ssh/id_rsa debug1: Authentications that can continue: publickey debug1: Trying private key: /Users/dmitry/.ssh/ec2key.pem debug1: read PEM private key done: type RSA debug1: Authentications that can continue: publickey debug1: No more authentication methods to try. Permission denied (publickey). Should I have done something after changing the hostname? Now I can't get into the instance! :(

  • Trouble installing ubuntu server on virtualbox (osx)

    Hello all, I'm trying to install lucid lynx 10.04.2 server on a virtualbox on snow leopard. I have 2 server iso files freshly downloaded one i386 and one 64bit. When I try to start the virtual machine with either one set to be the cd drive I'm getting the same error: Failed to open a session for the virtual machine Ub. Failed to load VMMR0.r0 (VERR_SUPLIB_OWNER_NOT_ROOT). Unknown error creating VM (VERR_SUPLIB_OWNER_NOT_ROOT). Couldn't find anything on it on google so I'm trying to see if anyone else has dealt with this issue. Thanks much in advance! edit: just downloaded the 32bit desktop edition to same avail edit2: ran Disk Utility' replair permissions then restarted. New error VERR_SUPLIB_WORLD_WRITABLE (instead of VERR_SUPLIB_OWNER_NOT_ROOT)

In VirtualBox there is an option to choose between pulseaudio and alsa for sound, but it seems to have no effect. I am using virtualbox-3.0 packages, not the ose version. My system is up to date.

  • ubuntu eth0 not reconnecting after cable unplugged

    I'm running kubuntu 9.10 w/ gnome, I have a static IP defined in /etc/network/interfaces When I unplugged my network cable and rebooted, then reconnected the network cable I was not able to connect. I tried using sudo ifup eth0, and then ifconfig and it seemed as though the IP address had been assigned and I was connected, but I wasn't. I then did ifdown eth0, and again ifup eth0. For some reason I'm not able to access the network. Furthermore, I also attempted to connect via wlan, and was able to connect to the wireless network, but cannot "see" the network. I can't transfer data or access the internet or anything on the network including the router.     Error i am getting:-- E: I wasn't able to locate a file for the sun-java6-bin package. This might mean you need to manually fix this package. (due to missing arch) then a blue dialog box appears with OK (Which is not clickable and pressing enter is not workin.)   • Ubuntu Cannot change permissions on files I own and have RW to.

    Hello there, I have a harddrive full of backups which for me is mounted at /media/chronus_ I have been trying to give another user rw permission to this drive.   • Not able to run firefox in a head-less Ubuntu server 9.10

    I need to run Firefox in my server in order to execute some Selenium tests from Hudson. I would love no to have to install a complete gui. So I installed Xvfb in order to fake the Gui (I understand it this way correct me if my assumptions are wrong). Any explanation about the problem and ways of solving it without installing a full gui, will be very helpful.

  • How can I restore programs that were sent to the background (Ubuntu)

    I was fooling around with my dual display setup (turned on my second monitor is almost all) and a handful of programs that were running seem not to be available anymore. Thunderbird, Gvim, Tomboy ps shows them, but I can't see them. Can't cycle to them with alt-tab. They aren't just in some other window. I'm not even sure how to start figuring out where everything went. Ideas?

  • Connect Ubuntu 11.04 to xbox 360

    I'd like to be able to stream .avi files to my xbox 360 video library. I've gone through a bunch of different servers (ushare, xbmc) both from the aptitude and from source. It seems that I can get the servers working from both localhost and from another computer on the network. However, the xbox cannot detect any of these. Can anybody give me a hand or perhaps post a detailed walkthrough to give me a hand? Thanks!

  • Ubuntu 9.10 will not boot

    After an update yesterday my Dell X300 will only boot to a screen with an option to perform 2 memory tests. If I perform these tests, it will only go back to this same screen, offering a choice of memory test again, 86+ or 86+ serial console 115200. This screen is headed - GNU Grub version 1.97 beta 4. This is a full install on my hard drive. How can I get back to booting normally?

  • pdftk issue after updating Ubuntu from 9.04 to 9.10

    We upgraded our server to 9.10 from 9.04 the other day, and it all went well except for one rather important program. We're using pdftk to automatically generate filled out pdf forms. On 9.04, it worked just fine. After updating to 9.10, the pdf forms would no longer be filled out - they'd just be empty. I discovered that if I try to create an fdf file via pdftk from my PDF form, it just creates an empty fdf with no fields. On windows, pdftk generates the fdf file just fine. Any ideas? Thanks.

    I'm trying to set auto static ip. I've set the content of /etc/network/interfaces to be: auto lo auto eth0 iface eth0 inet static address 192.168.1.2 netmask 255.255.255.0 gateway 192.168.1.1. and /etc/resolv.conf to be: nameserver 192.168.1.1. It seems that the ip address have set successfully. However, when I plug out the lan cable and then plug it back, the ip address is not set. How can I make it automatically set the static ip when the lan cable is connected?
