  • Ubuntu Desktop or Ubuntu Server?

    Hello everyone. I'm new to Linux and Ubuntu is my first distribution. I have chosen Ubuntu because I want to learn more about Linux. I'm under time constraints and need to setup a server as soon as possible. I have Ubuntu Desktop and Ubuntu Server setup via VMWare Fusion on my MacBook Pro. I installed everything I need on the server edition, but it feels way over my head. I have no experience with CLI. Can I just use Ubuntu Desktop to run my Web server for the time being while I learn CLI? I basically need to run Apache, PHP, MySQL, phpMyAdmin, Python and Django. Should I be using MAMP? Thanks.

    I have Ubuntu 12.04 LTS and I am experiencing some problems. I didn't have Ubuntu 12.04 on a drive to install it but I did have Ubuntu 14.04. So I installed it and downloaded Ubuntu 12.04 using Ubuntu 14. Now, I have 2 home partitions and 2 boot partitions. One home and boot is mounted at /media and the other one is /home and /boot. I cannot get rid of /media/HOME and /media/BOOT even using Gparted. How do I get remove them?

Done Building dependency tree Reading state information... Done Package sun-java6-jdk is not available, but is referred to by another package. This may mean that the package is missing, has been obsoleted, or is only available from another source E: Package sun-java6-jdk has no installation candidate I realize Java is available from many other sources, but for reasons that I can't get into here I must use this specific version. What can I do to get this installed?

    I changed my instance's hostname using the hostname utility and then set it in /etc/hostname so that the new name survives reboot. My main motivation was for differentiating between instances at the prompt using the \h format in PS1. EDIT I also changed permissions on my home directory. I made my home directory group writeable. END EDIT Now I can no longer SSH into the machine. The short of it is the error Permission denied (publickey). Running ssh -v, the more verbose output is: debug1: Authentications that can continue: publickey debug1: Next authentication method: publickey debug1: Offering RSA public key: /Users/dmitry/.ssh/id_rsa debug1: Authentications that can continue: publickey debug1: Trying private key: /Users/dmitry/.ssh/ec2key.pem debug1: read PEM private key done: type RSA debug1: Authentications that can continue: publickey debug1: No more authentication methods to try. Permission denied (publickey). Should I have done something after changing the hostname? Now I can't get into the instance! :(

  • Trouble installing ubuntu server on virtualbox (osx)

    Hello all, I'm trying to install lucid lynx 10.04.2 server on a virtualbox on snow leopard. I have 2 server iso files freshly downloaded one i386 and one 64bit. When I try to start the virtual machine with either one set to be the cd drive I'm getting the same error: Failed to open a session for the virtual machine Ub. Failed to load VMMR0.r0 (VERR_SUPLIB_OWNER_NOT_ROOT). Unknown error creating VM (VERR_SUPLIB_OWNER_NOT_ROOT). Couldn't find anything on it on google so I'm trying to see if anyone else has dealt with this issue. Thanks much in advance! edit: just downloaded the 32bit desktop edition to same avail edit2: ran Disk Utility' replair permissions then restarted. New error VERR_SUPLIB_WORLD_WRITABLE (instead of VERR_SUPLIB_OWNER_NOT_ROOT)

In VirtualBox there is an option to choose between pulseaudio and alsa for sound, but it seems to have no effect. I am using virtualbox-3.0 packages, not the ose version. My system is up to date.

  • ubuntu eth0 not reconnecting after cable unplugged

    I'm running kubuntu 9.10 w/ gnome, I have a static IP defined in /etc/network/interfaces When I unplugged my network cable and rebooted, then reconnected the network cable I was not able to connect. I tried using sudo ifup eth0, and then ifconfig and it seemed as though the IP address had been assigned and I was connected, but I wasn't. I then did ifdown eth0, and again ifup eth0. For some reason I'm not able to access the network. Furthermore, I also attempted to connect via wlan, and was able to connect to the wireless network, but cannot "see" the network. I can't transfer data or access the internet or anything on the network including the router.     Error i am getting:-- E: I wasn't able to locate a file for the sun-java6-bin package. This might mean you need to manually fix this package. (due to missing arch) then a blue dialog box appears with OK (Which is not clickable and pressing enter is not workin.) EDIT sudo dpkg --configure -a sudo aptitude clean sudo aptitude update sudo aptitude dist-upgrade sudo aptitude install sun-java6-jre sun-java6-plugin sun-java6-fonts Tried this but still not working... same problem.

  • Ubuntu Cannot change permissions on files I own and have RW to.

    Hello there, I have a harddrive full of backups which for me is mounted at /media/chronus_ I have been trying to give another user rw permission to this drive.     I need to run Firefox in my server in order to execute some Selenium tests from Hudson. I would love no to have to install a complete gui. So I installed Xvfb in order to fake the Gui (I understand it this way correct me if my assumptions are wrong).   • How can I restore programs that were sent to the background (Ubuntu)

    I was fooling around with my dual display setup (turned on my second monitor is almost all) and a handful of programs that were running seem not to be available anymore. Thunderbird, Gvim, Tomboy ps shows them, but I can't see them. Can't cycle to them with alt-tab. They aren't just in some other window. I'm not even sure how to start figuring out where everything went. Ideas?

  • Connect Ubuntu 11.04 to xbox 360

    I'd like to be able to stream .avi files to my xbox 360 video library. I've gone through a bunch of different servers (ushare, xbmc) both from the aptitude and from source. It seems that I can get the servers working from both localhost and from another computer on the network. However, the xbox cannot detect any of these. Can anybody give me a hand or perhaps post a detailed walkthrough to give me a hand? Thanks!

  • Ubuntu 9.10 will not boot

    After an update yesterday my Dell X300 will only boot to a screen with an option to perform 2 memory tests. If I perform these tests, it will only go back to this same screen, offering a choice of memory test again, 86+ or 86+ serial console 115200. This screen is headed - GNU Grub version 1.97 beta 4. This is a full install on my hard drive. How can I get back to booting normally?
