  I have an accounting & payroll client/server application where there are several input form with complex data validation rules. I am finding an effective way to perform unit testing of user interface. For complex validation rules I mean: "Disable button X if I Insert a value in textfield Y" "Enable a combobox if I insert a value in a textfield" ...... ...... Most promising pattern i have found is suggested by M. Fowler (http://martinfowler.com/eaaDev/ModelViewPresenter.html). Have you any experience about Unit Testing of User Interface? • No method 'get' on backbone model save

  I'm using backbone for a reasonably complicated form. I have a number of nested models, and have been computing other variables in the parent model like so: // INSIDE PARENT MODEL computedValue: function () { var value = this.get('childModel').get('childModelProperty'); return value; } This seems to work fine for keeping my UI in sync, but as soon as I call .save() on the parent model, I get: Uncaught TypeError: Object #<Object> has no method 'get' It seems that the child model kind of temporarily stops responding. Am I doing something inherently wrong? • Integrating WebSockets with Rails using Rack and Event Machine

  I have created an Asynchronous version of Rails 3 that I would like to integrate with a WebSocket implementation. I am using EventMachine, Ruby 1.9, Fibers and various em-flavoured libraries as documented by the wickedly good Ilya Grigorik. I have been looking at em-websocket as the handler for WebSocket connections but unsure of the best approach for hooking this into a Rails app. Ideally, this would work in a similar fashion to node.js with Express and Socket.io - incoming connections should be detected and dispatched to the WebSocket handler or the regular rails stack as indicated by the HTTP headers & etc. TL;DR WebSocket handler that plugs into an existing Rails application Transparently dispatch incoming WebSocket requests to endpoints in the app

• Store previous search criteria using ASP.NET

  I have created a web application which returns a list of products. On this page it allows users to search for a range of different search criteria. Once a user searches and the results are returned to the table on the page a user can then edit a product. However upon returning to the product listing page the page just reloads, and shows all products again. I would like to know what the best way would be to keep the search results, and upon returning to the search page it keeps the previous criteria. I have found a few posts on stack exchange - Best way to store previous search criteria in ASP.NET - is probaly one of the better ones. Does any one know how i could go about keeping the search criteria, so when a user returns to the search page, the previous search criteria and results stay the same. Many thanks.

  Hello Is there a good overview of tcp data path in Linux (2.6, not 2.4 if the path actually differ)? Where is a packet on different stages of tcp/ip stack handling? How packet is packed to tcp segment, then ip packet. How it is transmitted to network card? (with series of I/O regs write and DMA?) Is it transmitted to network card in the "write" syscall handler (with some deep callstack) or is it transmitted at some other moment?

  Hi! Can someone explain to me(not a rocket scientist) all the steps for installing XAMPP for a EC2 instance running Linux? And yes I have look the entire web and found nothing, except this "Deploying a lamp stack" and this "Starting Amazon EC2 with Mac OS X". I found the latter one more useful, but as a said I'm not a rocket scientist. I got stuck in to the latter link where I should edit the file .bash_profile with a text editor. I tried the "vi" in SSH, but why can't I open it on textEditor included in all Macs? Is there any easier way to setting up a XAMPP server for a linux server in EC2?

  Hi there, I'm studying for my final exams in my CS major on the subject distributed systems and operating systems. I'm in the need for a good definition for the terms task, process and threads. So far I'm confident that a process is the representation of running (or suspended, but initiated) program with its own memory, program counter, registers, stack, etc (process control block). Processes can run threads which share memory, so that communication via shared memory is possible in contrast to processes which have to communicate via IPC. But what's the difference between tasks and process. I often read that they're interchangable and that the term task isn't used anymore. Is that really true?

• What information do you capture your software crashes in the field?

  I am working on rewriting my unexpected error handling process, and I would like to ask the community: What information do you capture both automatic, and manually, when software you have written crashes? Right now, I capture a few items, some of which are: Automatic: Name of app that crashed Version of app that crashed Stack trace Operating System version RAM used by the application Number of processors Screen shot: (Only on non-public applications) User name and contact information (from Active Directory) Manual: What context is the user in (i.e.: what company, tech support call number, RA number, etc...) When did the user expect to happen? (Typical response: "Not to crash”) Steps to reproduce. What other bits of information do you capture that helps you discover the true cause of an applications problem, especially given that most users simply mash the keyboard when asked to tell you what happened. For the record I’m using C#, WPF and .NET version 4, but I don’t necessarily want to limit myself to those.   I'm by no means a cryptography expert, I have been reading a few questions around Stack Overflow and on Wikipedia but nothing is really 'clear cut' in terms of defining an IV and it's usage. Points I have discovered: An IV is pre-pended to a plaintext message in order to strengthen the encryption The IV is truely random Each message has it's own unique IV Timestamps and cryptographic hashes are sometimes used instead of random values, but these are considered to be insecure as timestamps can be predicted One of the weaknesses of WEP (in 802.11) is the fact that the IV will reset after a specific amount of encryptions, thus repeating the IV I'm sure there are many other points to be made, what have I missed? (or misread!)

  Environment is VC++ 9 on various Win platforms (XP and later) I'm writing an unhandled exception handler. I have a vague recollection from my kernel days that it was bad to catch an EXCEPTION_GUARD_PAGE, as this was generated to tell the OS to enlarge the stack. My question is twofold: Can such an exception occur in user space? If so, is it safe to catch it? I'm not especially interested in doing anything with it. I just want to know if I need to put special code in to not catch it (as I'm catching everything at the moment).

• Object reference not set to an instance of an object - how to find the offending object name in the

  This is the bane of my programming existence. After deploying an application, when this error crops up, no amount of debug dump tells you WHAT object was not instantiated. I have the call stack, that's great, it tells me roughly where the object is, but is there any way to get .NET to tell me the actual name of the object? If you catch them while debugging, of course the program breaks right on the offending creature, but if it happens after the program is in the wild, good luck. There has to be a way. I've explored the exceptions returned in these instances and there is just nothing helpful.

• Windows Phone 7 HttpRequest Unable to see true Error Code and response details

  I have to call a somewhat broken API from a Windows Phone 7 application. The API returns a 302 error and a cookie to the authentication request. I've tried every way I've been able to find in the MSDN documentation for using ClientHTTP instead of BrowserHTTP (registering the prefix, using the call to explicitly create a ClientHTTP using Request), but the 302 is getting translated to a 404 and I'm not seeing the cookies on the response. I've tried a WebClient, I've tried an HttpRequest and it is always the translated error message. If I allocate a CookieContainer for the HttpRequest, I get a null argument exception when the client stack is parsing the returned message. I can see that the response is coming back as expected via Fiddler.

  Not having a CS degree has left large holes in my programming related knowledge. In particular I'd really like to learn some of the computer networking stuff I would have got in a good CS degree. The problem I really have is "not knowing what I don't know". So far I know I don't know anything about the following (as far as computer networks are concearned) -sockets -ports -internet protocol (the whole IP stack I keep hearing about).   Hi, I need to display some text in cocos2d layer. I added UITextView to it. I added the text in the text View. But, for setting the font by ( UIFont class), I could not do it. I saw the list of supported fonts for iPhone, In that list Copperplate Gothic Bold is not there. I downloaded it from net. It is working good for CCLabel and CCFontMenuItem.   As per my understanding a lock is not released until the runtime completes the code block of the lock(obj) ( because when the block completes it calls Monitor.Exit(obj). • Overcoming Inertia - How to Just Get Going on Stuff

  I wondered whether you guys could help me - I have a big problem with overcoming inertia, i.e. how to just get started on a project/work when you simply feel the inertia of not being in the right 'zone' to do work such that it really becomes pretty damn tough to actually get on with what you want to do. Forgive me quoting my blog post where I try to express the problem as best I can:- The problem is that it feels so damned difficult to exert the force required to shift from one mode to another, so much so that you find it almost inconceivable to do so at the time. You need to force yourself somehow, or at least find some sort of hack to trick yourself into it. Do you guys have any ideas/hacks as to how to overcome this? Thanks in advance, and hopefully the community feel this question is valid for stack overflow (I have set it community wiki due to its fairly subjective nature.)

  I've published my website many times. But didn't think about this though until I came across this issue. So I decided to publish my WAP project to a local folder on my C drive first. Then used FTP to upload it to my shared host on discountasp.net. I noticed during runtime that the stack trace was referencing that local folder still and erroring out. Anyone know what config settings are affected when publishing? Obviously something is still pointing to my local C drive and I've searched my entire solution and don't see why.

  My native C++ COM component uses ATL. In DllRegisterServer() I call CComModule::RegisterServer(): STDAPI DllRegisterServer() { return _Module.RegisterServer(FALSE); // <<< notice FALSE here } FALSE is passed to indicate to not register the type library. ATL is available as sources, so I in fact compile the implementation of CComModule::RegisterServer(). Somewhere down the call stack there's an if statement: if( doRegisterTypeLibrary ) { //<< FALSE goes here // do some stuff, then call RegisterTypeLib() } The compiler sees all of the above code and so it can see that in fact the if condition is always false, yet when I inspect the linker progress messages I see that the reference to RegisterTypeLib() is still there, so the if statement is not eliminated. Can I make Visual C++ 9 perform better static analysis and actually see that some code is never called and not emit that code?

• Catching errors in ANTLR and finding parent

  I have found out that I can catch errors during parsing by overwriting displayRecognitionError, but how do I find the parent "node" of this error? ex. if I have the grammar: prog: stat expr; stat: STRING; expr: INTEGER; And give it the input "abc def". Then I will get an error at "def" which should be an integer. At this point I then want to get the parent which is "expr" (since it fails inside the INTEGER part) and it's parent "prog". Kind of like printing stack trace in java. I tried to look at the node from RecognitionException parsed to displayRecognitionError, but it is null, and using CommonErrorNode the parent is null. Should I maybe take a completely different approach?

• Is it "legal" for C++ runtime to call terminate() when the C++ code is used inside some non-C++ prog

  In certain cases - especially when an exception escapes a destructor during stack unwinding - C++ runtime calls terminate() which must do something reasonable post-mortem and then exit the program. When a question "why so harsh" arises the answer is usually "there's nothing more reasonable to do in such error situations". That sounds reasonable if the whole program is in C++. Now what if the C++ code is in a library and the program that uses the library is not in C++? This happens quite often - for example I might have a native C++ COM component consumed by a .NET program. Once terminate() is called inside the component code the .NET program suddenly ends abnormally. The program author will first of all think "I don't care of C++, why the hell is this library make my program exit?" How do I handle the latter scenario when developing libraries in C++? Is it reasonable that terminate() unexpectedly ends the program? Is there a better way to handle such situations?
