  • Rails: What's the suggested approach to retrieve xml from an outside source

    Rails newbie (though long time programmer) here. I'm writing an test app that retrieves data from several outside sources (think Twitter, RSS feeds, etc.) and under certain circumstances, it stores that data in a db (or presents it to the user). The data model and the views are trivial. What I'm having difficulty with is making the actual xml HTTP call to the outside source and deserialize the xml response so I can query/use it in my controller/helper. What library/gem should I use to accomplish this? I tried looking this up around the net, but only came up with some article from 2006 which, knowing how fast Rails has developed, might well be completely deprecated. Your help is much appreciated.

    I'm trying to do some basic quartz core drawing with arcs, but have an F in math ;-) I have a point: CGPoint center = CGPointMake(100.0f, 100.0f); CGFloat radius = 50.0f; CGFloat startAngle = 20.0f / 180.0f * M_PI; CGFloat endAngle = 150.0f / 180.0f * M_PI; CGContextAddArc(c, center.x, center.y, radius, startAngle, endAngle, 0); Now I want to draw a little dot on the middle of the arc. I mean, not the center point, but the little curve (arc) which is made up between the angles 20-150 degrees. I looked into quartz but unfortunately, there seems no helper function to calculate this. Probably some hardcore trigonometric logic with atan and stuff of this kind needed?

    Hi All Visual studio allow you to create "inlined" classes (if I am not mistaken with the name). So class header and implementation all in one file. H. file contain definitions and declarations of the class and functions, there is no .cpp file at all. So I was wondering if there is any penalty for doing it that way? any disadvantages ?     Can anyone point me to some documentation on how to write scripts in Python (or Perl or any other Linux friendly script language) that generate C++ code from XML or py files from the command line. I'd like to be able to write up some xml files and then run a shell command that reads these files and generates .h files with fully inlined functions, e.g. streaming operators, constructors, etc.

    I have created SQLiteOpenHelper class to help me open write the database. but i am not able to invoke it from the main.java activity I have created an Class which extends the Database Helper which is stored at /Messaging/src/com/v3/messaging/DatabaseHelper.java Code: http://pastebin.com/Z5qp32xu now i have this class called Main.java which will be the first activity on the launch of the application. But how can i make the DatabaseHelper.java run just to create the database but still be at the Main.java file. The database should be created with the tables only when the db or the tables dont exist.     Most of the languages like C++ when writing into a file, put an EOF character even if we miss to write statements like : filestream.close However is there any way, we can put the EOF character according to our requirement, in C++, for an instance.     More or less I want to execute two functions in parallel. One way as I see is doing through SetTimeOut function. I have not completely gone through the ReactiveExentension, although it looks promising but may be overkill for my needs. Is there any framework which supports parallelism ?     Hi, I am interested in getting the profiling of some number crunching program. I compiled it with -g and -pg options and linked it and got it gmon.out. After reading the info (plain text) it looks a bit ugly. I wonder if there are some open source tools for getting a graphical representation of the 10 functions where the program spends the most of the time as well as a flux diagram. Thanks

  • Compiler error when using abstract types

    I'm trying to implement a "protocol helper" trait that is responsible for matching up Prompts and Responses. The eventual goal is to have an object that defines the various Prompt and Response classes as subclasses of a sealed trait, then have a class that mixes in the ProtocolSupport trait for that Protocol object. The problem is that my current approach won't compile, even though I'm fairly sure it should. Here's a distilled version of what I've got: trait Protocol { type Response type Prompt <: BasePrompt trait BasePrompt { type Data def validate(response: Response): Validated[Data] } } trait ProtocolSupport[P <: Protocol] { def foo(prompt: P#Prompt, response: P#Response) = { // compiler error prompt.validate(response) } } The compiler doesn't like the response as an argument to prompt.validate: [error] found : response.type (with underlying type P#Response) [error] required: _4.Response where val _4: P [error] prompt.validate(response) [error] ^ This isn't very helpful.. it seems to say that it wants a P.Response but that's exactly what I'm giving it, so what's the problem?

  • Why can't I make my parameter like this?

    - (void)setPropertyValue:(const *void)inValue forID:(UInt32)propertyID { } The compiler doesn't like the const *void, for some reason. When I have that, it says: error: expected ')' before 'void' When I make the parameter like (UInt32)foo there is no problem. Does const *void only work in functions? I need a parameter which can be a "pointer to anything" like UInt32, Float64, etc.

    I believe the expression T() creates an rvalue (by the Standard) However the following code compiles (at least on gcc4.0) class T {... }; int main() { T() = T(); } I know technically this is possible because member functions can be invoked on temporaries and the above is just invoking the operator= on the r-value temporary created from T(). But conceptually this is like assigning a new value to an r-value. Is there a good reason why this is allowed?

  • jQuery: what if I don't have mouseleave function ?

    hi, I'm using Drupal for a website and I can only use jQuery 1.2.7 (not the most recent versions). I want to fade in / fade out a div element and I'm using mouseover / mouseout functions. However, this element contains some children and when I move the mouse over it, the mouseout function is triggered, because I'm moving over one of its children. Since I don't have mouseleave function, how can I solve this issue ? thanks

    Hi, I'm a .NET programmer who've just started to learn more about client side scripting, and I was wondering sometimes you use $get('value') and $find('value') and I've discovered that these are just shortcuts for document.getElementById('value') and Sys.Application.findComponent('value'), respectively. However, I still don't understand: what is the difference between these two functions in JavaScript? What exactly are they looking up/retrieving when invoked? Thanks in advance.

    I decided to use the singleton design pattern while creating a view helper class. This got me thinking; will the singleton instance survive across requests? This led to another question, Which variables (if any) survive across web requests and does that change depending on deployment? (Fastcgi, Mongrel, Passenger, ...) I know that Controller instance variables aren't persisted. I know Constants are persisted (or reloaded?). But I don't know about class variables, instance variables on a class, Eigenclasses, ...

  • Database advantages? Access, MySQL, msSQL, or any others?

    Dear all Stackoverflowers, I just started to learn programming and now I'm putting this question online based on a quote: no question is silly My work needs to develop a order system based on web, which wants a database system. Since using Excel for years as a general office user, I naturally turn this to Access. However, most people say Access is very limited comparing to MySQL or MSSQL, or any other more professional database system. But after developing some functions for my company's order system, I really find Access can fulfill my request. And I also tried MSSQL to develop, which I found it not quite convenient to use. I have searched in stackoverflow and find no general answer about my doubt. Now I am sincerely hoping some experienced and professional developers could clear my doubts. Now I'm listing some Access advantages, which I don't think other database system have. I hope you could help me also find these advantages in others. 1. Access is portable, I can just copy a xxx.accdb file to my company and continue with development. 2. Access is easy to generate helpful table, for example, it will automatically generate a field that can automatically count, could be used as primary key value. 3. it is more compatable with Excel, to display and filter data. 4. importantly, it nerely needs no environment to setup, just needs MS Office to be installed. ............others However, I also find some points that MSSQL is advantaged: 1. security reasons 2. easy to backup, ( just use BACKUP..... sql statement to do it) 3. can edit stored procedure to save some functions to database ...............others specifically, I wish some friends could tell me how to make other database portable? since I usually work both at home and in office. It's a headache to move MSSQL work to my office, since the version of MSSQL is not the same. Thank you all and best regards, :)
