Some of the big SIs ask me, "Do we have any design patterns/guidelines we can use?". .. Alas website design is a very personal thing and each website will have different requirements and needs, however I am now pleased to say we've just launched "Oracle Fusion Applications Design Patterns" website.   The website is the result of many years of Oracle R&D into user interface design for Fusion applications and features a really cool web app which allows you to visualise the UI components in action. Although many of the design patterns are related to ADF , its worth noting that ADF took its lead from Oracle Fusion Applications User Interface needs - not the other way around, its just taken us a while to publish these.   • Allow paste in worksheet without overwriting locked cells

    I have a protected worksheet that users would like to copy and paste into. I have no control over the workbook they are copying from. The protected worksheet has some rows that are available for data entry, and other rows that are locked and greyed out to the user. The users would like to be able to paste over the top of the entire worksheet from another random workbook and have all the cells available for data entry filled in, while the locked cells are undisturbed. In the current state, the user gets an error when they try to paste, because it cannot paste over the locked cells. Example: Worksheet 1: Act1 100 100 100 Act2 100 100 100 Act3 100 100 100 Worksheet 2: (The second row is locked) Act1 300 300 300 Act2 200 200 200 Act3 100 100 100 After copying/pasting Worksheet 2 should look like this: Act1 100 100 100 Act2 200 200 200 Act3 100 100 100 The values from worksheet 1 are populated and the locked rows are undisturbed. I've been thinking along the lines of having a hook where on paste, the locked cells are unlocked so that the paste can happen, and then are reverted to their original values and relocked. Is there some way I can loop through the cells in the clipboard and only paste cells where the target isn't locked? It is preferable to not create a separate button for paste, so there is less impact on the users, but if that's the only way, I'm not opposed to it. Currently, I plan on grouping the locked rows together, so that the data entry cells are contiguous, but then the accounts will be out of order, which is not preferred.

For those not familiar with those terms here is the summary, plenty of material out there on what it is, but here is what in my experience it means: jQuery Templating: A templating engine that allows you to specify a client-side template where you indicate which properties/tags you want dynamically updated. You in a sense specify which parts of the html is dynamic and since it is pluggable you are able to use tools data jQuery data linking and others to let it sync up your template with data. What makes it more powerful is that you can easily work with rows of data, adding and removing rows. Once the template has been generated, which you do dynamically on a client-side event, you then append/inject the resulting template somewhere in your DOM, like for example you would get a JSON object from the database, map it to your template, it populates the template with your data in the indicated places, and then let’s say for example append it to a row in a table. I have not found it that useful for lets say a single record of data since you could easily just get a partial view from the server via an html type ajax call. It really shines when you dynamically add/remove rows from a list in the DOM. I have not found an alternative that meets the functionality of the jQuery template and helps of course that Microsoft officially supports it. In future versions of the jQuery plug-in it may even ship as part of the standard jQuery library and with future versions of Visual Studio. jQuery Data Linking: In short I was fascinated by it initially by how with one line of code I can sync up my JSON object with my form elements. That's where my enthusiasm stopped. It was one-line to let is deal with syncing up your form with your JSON object, but it is not bidirectional as they state and I tried all the work arounds they suggested and none of them work. The problem is that when you update your JSON object it DOES NOT sync it up with your form. In an example, accounts are being edited client side by selecting the account from a list by clicking on the row, it then fetches the entire account JSON object via ajax json-type call and then refreshes the form with the account’s details from the new JSON object. What is the use of syncing up my JSON with the form if I still have to programmatically sync up my new JSON object with each DOM property?! So you may ask: “what is the alternative”? Good question and the same one I was pondering, maybe I can just use it for keeping my from n sync with my JSON object so I can post that JSON object back to the server and update my database. That’s when I discovered Knockout: Knockout It addresses the issues mentioned above and also supports event handling through the observer pattern. Not wanting to go into detail here, Steve Sanderson, the creator of Knockout, has already done a terrific job of that, thanks Steve for a great plug-in! Best of all it integrates perfectly with the jQuery Templating engine as well. I have not found an alternative to this plugin that supports the depth and width of functionality and would recommend it to anyone. The only drawback is the embedded html attributes (data-bind=””) tags that you have to add to the HTML, in my opinion tying your behavior to your HTML, where I like to separate behavior from HTML as well as CSS, so the HTML is purely to define content, not styling or behavior. But there are plusses to this as well and also a nifty work around to this that I will just shortly mention here with an example. Instead of data binding an html tag with knockout event handling like so:  <%=Html.TextBox("PrepayDiscount", String.Empty, new { @class = "number" })%>   Do: <%=Html.DataBoundTextBox("PrepayDiscount", String.Empty, new { @class = "number" })%>   The html extension above then takes care of the internals and you could then swap Knockout for something else if you want to inside the extension and keep the HTML plugin agnostic. Here is what the extension looks like, you can easily build a whole library to support all kinds of data binding options from this:      public static class HtmlExtensions       {         public static MvcHtmlString DataBoundTextBox(this HtmlHelper helper, string name, object value, object htmlAttributes)         {             var dic = new RouteValueDictionary(htmlAttributes);             dic.Add("data-bind", String.Format("value: {0}", name));             return helper.TextBox(name, value, dic);         }       }   Hope this helps in making a decision when and where to consider jQuery templating, data linking and Knockout.

  • ADF Essentials - Available for free and certified on GlassFish!

    If you are an Oracle customer, you are probably familiar with Oracle ADF (Application Development Framework). If you are not, ADF is, in a nutshell, a Java EE based framework that simplifies the development of enterprise applications. It is the development framework that was used, among other things, to build Oracle Fusion Applications. Oracle has just released ADF Essentials, a free to develop and deploy version of Oracle ADF's core technologies. As a good news never come alone, GlassFish 3.1.2 is now a certified container for ADF Essentials! ADF Essentials leverage core ADF features and includes: Oracle ADF Faces - a set of more than 150 JSF 2.0 rich components that simplify the creation of rich Web user interfaces (charting, data vizualization, advanced tables, drag and drop, touch gesture support, extensive windowing capabilities, etc.) Oracle ADF Controller - an extension of the JSF controller that helps build reusable process flows and provides the ability to create dynamic regions within Web pages. Oracle ADF Binding - an XML-based, meta-data abstraction layer to connect user interfaces to business services. Oracle ADF Business Components – a declaratively-configured layer that simplifies developing business services against relational databases by providing reusable components that implement common design patterns. ADF is a highly declarative framework, it has always had a very good tooling support. Visual development for Oracle ADF Essentials is provided in Oracle JDeveloper 11.1.2.3. Eclispe support is planned for a later OEPE (Oracle Enterprise Pack for Eclipse) release.     Following new Worklist features are available on E-Business Suite 12.1.3 via Patch 13646173. Ability to view comments on top of a notification If an action is performed on a notification such as Reassign, Request for Information or Provide Information, the recipient of the notification will see who performed the last action and the associated comment on top of the notification. Reassigning a request for information notification If an approver requests more information on a notification from it's submitter, the submitter now has two options Answer Request for More Information Transfer Request for More Information If the submitter thinks the requested information can be provided by another user, he/she can transfer the request to the other user. Please note that only Transfer is supported for Request for More Information. Once transferred, the submitter cannot access the notification and provide the requested information. Use actual sent date when reassigning a notification The Sent field in notification header always showed the date on which the notification was first created. If the notification was later reassigned, the Sent date was not updated to show the last action date. This caused problems in following scenario Approval notification was sent to JACK on 01-JAN-2012 JACK waited for 10 days before reassigning to JILL on 10-JAN-2012 JILL does not see the notification as sent on 10-JAN-2012, instead sees it as sent on 01-JAN-2012 Although the notification was originally created on 01-JAN-2012, it was sent to JILL only on 10-JAN-2012 The enhancement now shows the correct sent date in Worklist and Notification Details page. Figure 1 - Depicts all the above 3 features Related Action History for response required notification So far it was possible to embed Action History of an response-required notification into another FYI notification using #RELATED_HISTORY attribute (Please refer to Workflow Developer Guide for details about this attribute). The enhancement now enables developers to embed Action History of one response-required notification into another response-required notification. To embed Action History of one response-required notification into another, create message attribute #RELATED_HISTORY. To this attribute set a value during run-time in the following format. {TITLE}[ITEM_TYPE:ITEM_KEY]PROCESS_NAME:ACTIVITY_LABEL_NAMEThe TITLE, ITEM_TYPE and ITEM_KEY are optional values. TITLE is used as Related Action History header title. If TITLE is not present, then a default title "Related Action History" is shown. If ITEM_TYPE is present and ITEM_KEY is not, For Example: {TITLE}[ITEM_TYPE]PROCESS_NAME:ACTIVITY_LABEL_NAME , the Related Action History is populated from parent item type of the current item.
