• Unable to cast transparent proxy to type &lt;type&gt;

  This is not the first time I've run into this wonderful error while creating new AppDomains in .NET and then trying to load types and access them across App Domains. In almost all cases the problem I've run into with this error the problem comes from the two AppDomains involved loading different copies of the same type. Unless the types match exactly and come exactly from the same assembly the typecast will fail. The most common scenario is that the types are loaded from different assemblies - as unlikely as that sounds. An Example of Failure To give some context, I'm working on some old code in Html Help Builder that creates a new AppDomain in order to parse assembly information for documentation purposes. I create a new AppDomain in order to load up an assembly process it and then immediately unload it along with the AppDomain. The AppDomain allows for unloading that otherwise wouldn't be possible as well as isolating my code from the assembly that's being loaded. The process to accomplish this is fairly established and I use it for lots of applications that use add-in like functionality - basically anywhere where code needs to be isolated and have the ability to be unloaded. My pattern for this is: Create a new AppDomain Load a Factory Class into the AppDomain Use the Factory Class to load additional types from the remote domain Here's the relevant code from my TypeParserFactory that creates a domain and then loads a specific type - TypeParser - that is accessed cross-AppDomain in the parent domain:public class TypeParserFactory : System.MarshalByRefObject,IDisposable { …/// <summary> /// TypeParser Factory method that loads the TypeParser /// object into a new AppDomain so it can be unloaded. /// Creates AppDomain and creates type. /// </summary> /// <returns></returns> public TypeParser CreateTypeParser() { if (!CreateAppDomain(null)) return null; /// Create the instance inside of the new AppDomain /// Note: remote domain uses local EXE's AppBasePath!!! Here I need to call methods on the remote object so all classes are MarshalByRefObject. The specific problem code is the loading up a new type which points at an assembly that visible both in the current domain and the remote domain and then instantiates a type from it. This is the code in question:Assembly assembly = Assembly.GetExecutingAssembly(); string assemblyPath = Assembly.GetExecutingAssembly().Location; parser = (TypeParser) this.LocalAppDomain.CreateInstanceFrom(assemblyPath, typeof(TypeParser).FullName).Unwrap(); The last line of code is what blows up with the Unable to cast transparent proxy to type <type> error. Without the cast the code actually returns a TransparentProxy instance, but the cast is what blows up. In other words I AM in fact getting a TypeParser instance back but it can't be cast to the TypeParser type that is loaded in the current AppDomain. Finding the Problem To see what's going on I tried using the .NET 4.0 dynamic type on the result and lo and behold it worked with dynamic - the value returned is actually a TypeParser instance: Assembly assembly = Assembly.GetExecutingAssembly(); string assemblyPath = Assembly.GetExecutingAssembly().Location; object objparser = this.LocalAppDomain.CreateInstanceFrom(assemblyPath, typeof(TypeParser).FullName).Unwrap(); // dynamic works dynamic dynParser = objparser; string info = dynParser.GetVersionInfo(); // method call works // casting fails parser = (TypeParser)objparser; So clearly a TypeParser type is coming back, but nevertheless it's not the right one. Hmmm… mysterious.Another couple of tries reveal the problem however:// works dynamic dynParser = objparser; string info = dynParser.GetVersionInfo(); // method call works // c:\wwapps\wwhelp\wwReflection20.dll (Current Execution Folder) string info3 = typeof(TypeParser).Assembly.CodeBase; // c:\program files\vfp9\wwReflection20.dll (my COM client EXE's folder) string info4 = dynParser.GetType().Assembly.CodeBase; // fails parser = (TypeParser)objparser; As you can see the second value is coming from a totally different assembly. Note that this is even though I EXPLICITLY SPECIFIED an assembly path to load the assembly from! Instead .NET decided to load the assembly from the original ApplicationBase folder. Ouch! How I actually tracked this down was a little more tedious: I added a method like this to both the factory and the instance types and then compared notes:public string GetVersionInfo() { return ".NET Version: " + Environment.Version.ToString() + "\r\n" + "wwReflection Assembly: " + typeof(TypeParserFactory).Assembly.CodeBase.Replace("file:///", "").Replace("/", "\\") + "\r\n" + "Assembly Cur Dir: " + Directory.GetCurrentDirectory() + "\r\n" + "ApplicationBase: " + AppDomain.CurrentDomain.SetupInformation.ApplicationBase + "\r\n" + "App Domain: " + AppDomain.CurrentDomain.FriendlyName + "\r\n"; } For the factory I got: .NET Version: 4.0.30319.239wwReflection Assembly: c:\wwapps\wwhelp\bin\wwreflection20.dllAssembly Cur Dir: c:\wwapps\wwhelpApplicationBase: C:\Programs\vfp9\App Domain: wwReflection534cfa1f For the instance type I got: .NET Version: 4.0.30319.239wwReflection Assembly: C:\\Programs\\vfp9\wwreflection20.dllAssembly Cur Dir: c:\\wwapps\\wwhelpApplicationBase: C:\\Programs\\vfp9\App Domain: wwDotNetBridge_56006605 which clearly shows the problem. You can see that both are loading from different appDomains but the each is loading the assembly from a different location. Probably a better solution yet (for ANY kind of assembly loading problem) is to use the .NET Fusion Log Viewer to trace assembly loads.The Fusion viewer will show a load trace for each assembly loaded and where it's looking to find it. Here's what the viewer looks like: The last trace above that I found for the second wwReflection20 load (the one that is wonky) looks like this:*** Assembly Binder Log Entry (1/13/2012 @ 3:06:49 AM) *** The operation was successful. Notice that the fusion log clearly shows that the .NET loader makes no attempt to even load the assembly from the path I explicitly specified. Remember your Assembly Locations As mentioned earlier all failures I've seen like this ultimately resulted from different versions of the same type being available in the two AppDomains. At first sight that seems ridiculous - how could the types be different and why would you have multiple assemblies - but there are actually a number of scenarios where it's quite possible to have multiple copies of the same assembly floating around in multiple places. If you're hosting different environments (like hosting the Razor Engine, or ASP.NET Runtime for example) it's common to create a private BIN folder and it's important to make sure that there's no overlap of assemblies. In my case of Html Help Builder the problem started because I'm using COM interop to access the .NET assembly and the above code. COM Interop has very specific requirements on where assemblies can be found and because I was mucking around with the loader code today, I ended up moving assemblies around to a new location for explicit loading. The explicit load works in the main AppDomain, but failed in the remote domain as I showed. The solution here was simple enough: Delete the extraneous assembly which was left around by accident. Not a common problem, but one that when it bites is pretty nasty to figure out because it seems so unlikely that types wouldn't match. I know I've run into this a few times and writing this down hopefully will make me remember in the future rather than poking around again for an hour trying to debug the issue as I did today. • IIS 7.5 doesn't load static html pages

  There is an IIS 7.5 freshly installed on a dedicated server. ASP.NET 4.0 Web app copied to its folder, new website is created on its own IP on post 80, IIS_IUSR and IUSR accounts have read/execute rights on site's folder, the site is assigned to its own Integrated app pool with 4.0 .NET (I tried Classic pool with the same results). The problem: when I try to access this web site, browser only loads content generated by .NET resources such as aspx pages, .axd files, etc. Static images, static js, css and html files are in the page source but IIS doesn't serve them. Dev tools in all browsers complain that all those static resources have been sent by the server with wrong content type (plain text instead of image, styles, etc). What do I do wrong?

• Permission settings for apache2 web content directories with several users?

  Hi there. I've got a Debian VPS set up with a LAMP-stack. My apache2 instance runs on the user account 'www-data'. In addition to the root account and the service accounts I have several user accounts belonging to friends, family and myself that includes FTP-access. This is to allow the users to drop files to the root of their domain which is located in their home folder. I am having issues with setting the correct permissions so that Apache is able to serve the content ("403 Forbidden"). I could just do a 'chmod -R 755 *' on the entire www-directory for each domain, but from what I gather that's not a good idea. Here's an example of the structure: apache2 is run by 'www-data' User 'john' has this home folder structure /home/john/domains/somedomain.com/www /home/john/domains/sub.somedomain.com/www How can I keep things safe while still allowing users to upload content via FTP, and allow for file-uploads in lets say Wordpress?

• finding the user of iis apppool \ defaultapppool

  My IIS apppool user is trying to create a folder but fails. How do I find out which User it is? Let's say I don't know much about IIS7 but need to trace whatever is happening through tools. Place of crime is WinSrv2008 with IIS7. So I fire up Sysinternals/ProcessMonitor to find out what is happening. I find Access denied on a folder just as I suspected. But which user? I add the User column to the output and it says IIS Apppool\Defaultapppool in capitals. Well... that isn't a user is it? If I go to IIS and its Apppools and Advanced settings and Process model and Identity I can see clues about which user it is but that is only because I know IIS. What if it had been Apache or LightHttpd or whatever? How do I see the user to give the appropriate rights to?

I write net share MyCompany_server___0.0.1-SNAPSHOT___server=E:\JavaWorkspace\Product\src\generated\server Then, this share is visible by other Windows machine in network shares of my machine, but not be accessed. Is there an option I forgot to set ? EDITED due to comment Accessing the share using an OpenSUSE machine brings the "The folder contents could not be displayed." message. Accessing the share using the Windows machine sharing that folder succeeds without any issue Accessing the share using another Windows machine displays MyCompany_server_0.0.1-SNAPSHOT_server is not accessible. • How to config cscope in emacs?

  I'm using Ubuntu 10.10 as my os, I am using emacs in Gnome. I have installed emacs and cscope successfully: sudo apt-get install emacs sudo apt-get install cscope then run command in the directory of the source code folder in my terminal, and the index files have been produced. cscope-indexer and add the following stuf in .emacs in home/username folder (require 'xcscope)) ) However, there isn't a short-cut ,'CSCOPE', in the emacs ui and when I use ctrl_c + s to use cscope, emacs said it's undefined. What should i do now to make cscope run.

It is taken for granted that the developer must be a competent admin. Any sensible person will tell you that s/he prefers an OOB solution. Development is a course of last resort. It behooves us to know where OOB ends and where development starts. I offer two definitions: It is OOB when There is no need to deploy server code It is OOB when the user does not need to do any coding at all There is an in-between status, where users may use a CEWP or a CQWP and enter JScript and CAML code. This requires user coding, but no server side deployment. My personal feeling is that the in-between requires coding and thus belongs in the development side. What do you think?  That’s all folks?!

• Does VMware_ThinApp_4.0.3_169725.msi contain Trojan.Win32.Vapsup in it? [closed]

  Today I ran a full system scan using Online Armor++. It detected Trojans in the installer. I have had this installer on the computer for many months and I do not remember if I ever installed it on this PC or not. For some reason I unpacked the installer with 7zip though. I was probably going to attempt to make it portable. Anyway so I had the installer in a folder, and another folder next to it with all of the installers files unpacked. The VMwareVS.cab file that was extracted from the installer, also had its files extracted into another folder. This was all done many months ago. OA++ did not detect the installer itself as as Trojan VMwareVS.cab, but it did detect 4 of the files that I had unpacked as Trojans. Here are the details of what the scan detected on my PC today. Note: I uploaded these files to VirusTotal....the Ikarus and A-squared engines(the engines from Online Armor++) are not detecting anything. But some of the other engines are detecting the same Trojan that OA++ detected(Trojan.Win32.Vapsup). • SUPINFO International University in Mauritius

  Since a while I'm considering to pick up my activities as a student and I'd like to get a degree in Computer Science. Personal motivation I mean after all this years as a professional software (and database) developer I have the personal urge to complete this part of my education. Having various certifications by Microsoft and being awarded as an Microsoft Most Valuable Professional (MVP) twice looks pretty awesome on a resume but having a "proper" degree would just complete my package. During the last couple of years I already got in touch with C-SAC (local business school with degree courses), the University of Mauritius and BCS, the Chartered Institute for IT to check the options to enroll as an experienced software developer. Quite frankly, it was kind of alienating to receive that feedback: Start from scratch! No seriously? Spending x amount of years to sit for courses that might be outdated and form part of your daily routine? Probably being in an awkward situation in which your professional expertise might exceed the lecturers knowledge? I don't know... but if that's path to walk... Well, then I might have to go for it. SUPINFO International University Some weeks ago I was contacted by the General Manager, Education Recruitment and Development of Medine Education Village, Yamal Matabudul, to have a chat on how the local IT scene, namely the Mauritius Software Craftsmanship Community (MSCC), could assist in their plans to promote their upcoming campus. Medine went into partnership with the French-based SUPINFO International University and Mauritius will be the 36th location world-wide for SUPINFO. Actually, the concept of SUPINFO is very likely to the common understanding of an apprenticeship in Germany. Not only does a student enroll into the programme but will also be placed into various internships as part of the curriculum. It's a big advantage in my opinion as the person stays in touch with the daily procedures and workflows in the real world of IT. Statements like "We just received a 'crash course' of information and learned new technology which is equivalent to 1.5 months of lectures at the university" wouldn't form part of the experience of such an education. Open Day at the Medine Education Village Last Saturday, Medine organised their Open Day and it was the official inauguration of the SUPINFO campus in Mauritius. It's now listed on their website, too - but be warned, the site is mainly in French language although the courses are all done in English. Not only was it a big opportunity to "hang out" on the campus of Medine but it was great to see the first professional partners for their internship programme, too. Oh, just for the records, IOS Indian Ocean Software Ltd. will also be among the future employers for SUPINFO students. More about that in an upcoming blog entry. Open Day at Medine Education Village - SUPINFO International University in Mauritius Mr Alick Mouriesse, President of SUPINFO, arrived the previous day and he gave all attendees a great overview of the roots of SUPINFO, the general development of the educational syllabus and their high emphasis on their partnerships with local IT companies in order to assist their students to get future jobs but also feel the heartbeat of technology live. Something which is completely missing in classic institutions of tertiary education in Computer Science. And since I was on tour with my children, as usual during weekends, he also talked about the outlook of having a SUPINFO campus in Mauritius. Apart from the close connection to IT companies and providing internships to students, SUPINFO clearly works on an international level. Meaning students of SUPINFO can move around the globe and can continue their studies seamlessly. For example, you might enroll for your first year in France, then continue to do 2nd and 3rd year in Canada or any other country with a SUPINFO campus to earn your bachelor degree, and then live and study in Mauritius for the next 2 years to achieve a Master degree. Okay, but why SUPINFO? Well, coming back to my original statement - I'd like to get a degree in Computer Science - SUPINFO has a process called Validation of Acquired Experience (VAE) which is tailor-made for employees in the field of IT, and allows you to enroll in their course programme. I already got in touch with their online support chat but was only redirected to some FAQs on their website, unfortunately. So, during the Open Day I seized the opportunity to have an one-on-one conversation with Alick Mouriesse, and he clearly encouraged me to gather my certifications and working experience. SUPINFO does an individual evaluation prior to their assignment regarding course level, and hopefully my chances of getting some modules ahead of studies are looking better than compared to the other institutes. Don't get me wrong, I don't want to go down the easy route but why should someone sit for "Database 101" or "Principles of OOP" when applying and preaching database normalisation and practicing Clean Code Developer are like flesh and blood? Anyway, I'll be off to get my transcripts of certificates together with my course assignments from the old days at the university. Yes, I studied Applied Chemistry for a couple of years before intersecting into IT and software development particularly... ;-)

• Make Virtualhost detect Wildcard with and without preceding www

  In my Apache (Xampp) httpd-vhosts.conf file I have added this Virtualhost It allows me to use Wildcard names like testserver1.dev and testserver2.dev I just have to make sure to add the name to my Windows Hosts file. <VirtualHost *:80> VirtualDocumentRoot E:/Server/htdocs/projects/%1/www ServerAlias *.dev </VirtualHost> What I would like to do though is add to this funtionality and make it work if the name begins with a www so testserver1.dev would also work as www.testserver1.dev The way it currently is set up, if I tried to access that URL, it would look in a folder called www.testserver1 instead of the folder testserver1

• How to keep Flash secured with EMET?

  I use EMET to secure a number of applications on my computer - web browsers, Office suite applications, PDF readers, as well as Adobe Flash. Overall it's working great, except that the Flash executables contain the version number in the file name, so every time there's an update, the file names change and I have to remember to re-add them manually to EMET. Is there a way to streamline this process? EMET does support wildcards, but only in the path itself, not the file name, so something like %windir%\system32\Macromed\Flash\*.exe wouldn't work. Is there any other way to add a whole folder to EMET so that any new executables in that folder are automatically secured?

• Best way to restore individual folders via Time Machine after clean Lion install?

  I'm doing a clean erase and install of Lion, and am looking for the best way to restore individual folders into my home directory via Time Machine. I've done a dummy run, clean Lion install, then 'browse other disks' in Time Machine, navigate to my home folder and 'restore' what I need, such as pictures/music and folders inside the .library folder (such as Mail and Keychains). However this method seems to give you odd permissions, like this: http://i43.tinypic.com/15y82v4.png Hence I wondered if anyone knows what the best method is to restore files and folders after a clean install. N.b I do not want to use the migration assistant, or 'restore OS from Time Machine' - as I specifically want to do a clean install, and just copy over what I need (some folders will be moved onto a separate disk to the OS, and some will remain on the same disk). • Is it possible to run pgp 6.5.8 freeware on Windows 7 64 bit machine?

  I am trying to get the PGP Command Line -Freeware Version 6.5.8 by Networks Associates working on a Wndows 7 64 bit machine. Does anyone know if it is possible? I installed it in C:\pgp when i run pgp, it keeps telling me that it can't find the pgp.cfg file. My PGPPATH is defined and set to C:\pgp I have also included this path in my Path variable Can anyone tell me what i am doing wrong. The documentation states that: "The first time you start PGP, the software checks to see if the environment variable PGPPATH is defined. If PGPPATH is defined, the software puts the pgp.cfg in the %PGPPATH% directory" Edit: This is most likely a Windows 7 professional folder rights issue, since the file pgp.cfg can't get written. I tried my best given the folder full rights, but im not 100% confident that i did it right. Anyone help me?

  I am going to interview within two weeks for an internship that would involve Python programming. Can anyone suggest what possible areas should I polish? I am looking for commonly asked stuff in interviews for Python openings. Apart from the fact that I have already been doing the language for over a year now, I fail to perceive what they can ask me. Like for a C or C++ interview, there are lots of questions ranging from reversing of strings to building linked lists, but for a Python interview, I am clueless. Personal experiences and/ or suggestions are welcomed.

• LAMP/TURNKEY LINUX/VIRTUAL BOX: Manipulating Files on a Virtual Machine

  I am running Ubuntu 9.10 and I want to install turnkey linux's LAMP server on my machine to test out my code. I installed Turnkey LAMP via VirtualBox and it seems to be working because I can access the http://localhost. My question is: How do I manipulate files via VirtualBox? For example, if I had installed LAMP on my machine (not on a virtual machine), I could easily add/edit/delete files in the var/WWW folder. Where is the equivalent of "WWW" folder on Virtualbox and how can I interface with it? Thanks,

• SF Bay Area Event, November 1st: SPARC 25th Anniversary at Computer History Museum

The panel event will feature Sun Microsystems founders Bill Joy and Andy Bechtolsheim, SPARC luminaries such as Anant Agrawal and David Patterson, former Sun VP Bernard Lacroute, plus Oracle executives Mark Hurd, John Fowler and Rick Hetherington.
