  • AnkhSVN: No Versioned Parent Directories when adding a Web Site

    I've recently been trying out Ankhsvn and I quite like it, and more importantly, it generally likes me. But I've hit a problem adding existing VS projects to subversion using AnkhSVN. Most Windows and Web projects are added fine, but I have a problem when I try to a Websites (as opposed to Web Applications), and in these cases I get the following error: No versioned parent directories After some googling, I've come across other people with the same problems and there have been one or two suggests for solving the problem, but non so far have worked. AnkhSVN is popular enough, and although web applications are often preferred to websites these days, I'm hoping that someone here has a ready solution available.

  • VS2010 method comment block pretty format.

    I have just installed the lastest RC of VS2010, which for me represents a shift from VS2008. A new comment formatting feature that I was looking forward to appears to be missing. About 6 months ago I read a Scott Gu blog post that mentioned a new VS2010 feature that would format /// style method comment blocks into more readable formatted regions inline with other code. The Scott Gu blog did not provide a screen shot but I was expecting the VS2010 editor to remove the XML tags from the /// method comment block and render just the essential text comment. Was this feature pulled during the Beta, or is there an option switch urking somewhere?

  • VS2008: File creation fails randomly in unit testing?

    I'm working on implementing a reasonably simple XML serializer/deserializer (log file parser) application in C# .NET with VS 2008. I have about 50 unit tests right now for various parts of the code (mostly for the various serialization operations), and some of them seem to be failing mostly at random when they deal with file I/O. The way the tests are structured is that in the test setup method, I create a new empty file at a certain predetermined location, and close the stream I get back. Then I run some basic tests on the file (varying by what exactly is under test). In the cleanup method, I delete the file again. A large portion (usually 30 or more, though the number varies run to run) of my unit tests will fail at the initialize method, claiming they can't access the file I'm trying to create. I can't pin down the exact reason, since a test that will work one run fails the next; they all succeed when run individually. What's the problem here? Why can't I access this file across multiple unit tests? Likely my understanding is flawed. My assumption is that when the link from Taleo is entered into the vs2010 "Add Service Reference" dialog and GO is clicked, then vs2010 should retrieve a proper WSDL/SOAP envelope back from the Taleo link. That does not happen; instead an error occurs. Fiddler2 (http://fiddler2.com) displays the status code 500 "HTTP/1.1 500 Internal Server Error".   • .NET Framework 4 in WPF not showing bitmap effect

    I am having a problem using VS2010 and framework version 4 with bitmap effects. If I have the code below and run it in a WPF application using the .NET Framework 4 Client Profile, the bitmap effect does not appear. If I set the framework version to .NET Framework 3.5 Client Profile (and change no code), it runs as expected. At first, I thought it was a problem in my application, but I removed the code and put it in a separate standalone application and it behaves the same. Anyone else verify that the same problem happens? What is happening here?   • What the heck is goin' on with the column Width or Why I do hate rdlc designer in VS...

    I can't understand... I put a column into a Tablix in .rdlc designer of VS2010 and defined column's width and even said that it cannot grow. And in the reportViewer when you run app. it gets grown again. Damn it. I replaced every single tag in the file to False - nothing happened, it still takes the width of a prior column. Interestingly some columns and rows that I put yesterday don't grow. I just wanted to separate group columns and 'Total' section with thin empty column, but it gets huge and ugly and spoils everything... damn that thing! Why the rdlc designer so damn stupid? Why sometimes it doesn't allow me to merge and split cells? Is there any better editor for .rdlc files?

    When I build my solution, it complains about a missing referenced DLL. When I rebuild it, the problem goes away. Whenever I do a clean this returns, i.e. have to attempt a build twice before it succeeds. This is vague, but if warranted I can give a better explanation of solution structure.

    I need to connect to a database in Sqlite so i downloaded and installed System.Data.SQLite and with the designer dragged all my tables. The designer created a .cs file with public class Entities : ObjectContext and 3 constructors: 1st public Entities() : base("name=Entities", "Entities") this one load the connection string from App.config and works fine.   • In VB.net websites, VS2008 ALWAYS uses space indentation for new files

    So, I've changed my settings in Tools | Options | Text Editor, for All Languages, Basic, and C#, to having Block indenting, and 'Keep tabs'. I've also tried this with Smart indenting too. Now, although once I start editing a file, its auto indentation is done with tabs, when I create a new web form in my ASP.net website, VS2008 insists on creating the initial code with space indentation. So for example, I'll get an aspx.vb file for my new page like so: Partial Class Admin_Index Inherits System.Web.UI.Page End Class Note that the 'Inherits' line is SPACE-indented, even though I have the text editor settings set to keep tabs. Is there any way I can make the default created files indented with tabs, not spaces? Or is VS just too stubborn? :-) By the way, please don't just respond and say this is petty as I can quickly change that one line of indentation to using a tab. I know this, but I have a software team that find it irritating as we have an SVN hook that prevents checkins if there's any space-indentation. It would be very useful if any newly-created files have tab indentation from the start, rather than us having to change it every time.

    I'm writing a SOAP Server that will act as an endpoint for an external client. The external client expects SOAP 1.1. I'll be taking embedded business objects in the SOAP messages and passing them to an internal application, getting responses back and responding with SOAP messages to the eternal client. I did the traditional ASMX based web services several years ago. Now, I've been exploring WCF Services and wondering the best approach to take. 1) Should WCF be considered a superset of ASMX web services? 2) Is there any reason to still write new web services using ASMX instead of WCF? 3) Does WCF provide better facilities for working with SOAP messages, as opposed to SOAP Extensions? 4) Can I restrict communication to SOAP 1.1 using WCF, the way I can with a web.config change in ASMX? 5) Does WCF have an easy way to log or review the requests that hit the service without resorting to something like SOAP extensions? Sorry my questions are not very specific; still trying to get handle on what I need to know... Using VS2008, Windows Server 2008. Chris

  • Displaying console output?

    I am currently creating a customer application for a local company. I have a datagridview linked to the customers table, and I am trying to link it up so that updates, inserts and deletions are handled correctly. I am very new to c# so I am starting with the basics (like about 2 days ago I knew nothing - I know vb.net, Java and several other languages though..). Anywho from what I understand anything output through Debug.WriteLine should only appear when in debug mode (common sense really) but anything output through Concole.WriteLine should appear whether or not in debug mode. However I have checked the immediate and output windows and nothing is being output when in normal mode. Does anyone have any idea why this is?? Edit: I have event handlers for clicking a cell - it should output CellClicked and set the gridview to invisible when a cell is clicked. The latter works whichever mode I am in, but CellClicked is only output in debug mode. I am using Console.WriteLine("CellClicked").

  • Localize node texts in treeview using resource files

    For a project I need a tree view that allows the user to select a module, which then is displayed in a content area. The project relies heavily on localization and this is provided by the resource files. Now I discovered today, that the text that are assigned to preset tree view nodes are not contained in the resource files. So the question is whether there is a way of doing this, short of mapping the elemenst in code. I.e. assigning a name to the node, running over all nodes and pulling the resources from the resouce manager based on the node name.     I love the idea of historical debugging in VS 2010. However, I am really disappointed that unmanaged C++ is left out. IntelliTrace supports debugging Visual Basic and C# applications that use .NET version 2.0, 3.0, 3.5, or 4. You can debug most applications, including applications that were created by using ASP.NET, Windows Forms, WPF, Windows Workflow, and WCF. IntelliTrace does not support debugging C++, script, or other languages. Debugging of F# applications is supported on an experimental basis. (editorial) [This is really poor support in my opinion. .NET is less in need of this assistance than unmanaged c++. I an getting a little tired of the status of plain old C++ and its second-class status in the MS tools world. Yes, I realize it is probably WAAY easier to implement this with .NET and MS are pushing .NET as the future, and yes, I know that C++ is an "old" language, but that does not diminish the fact that there are lots of C++ apps out there and there will continue to be more apps built with C++. I sincerely hope MS has not dropped C++ as a supported developer tool/language- that would be a shame.] Does anyone know if there are plans for it to support C++?

  • How do I get ELMAH to work with SQL Server (permission problems)

    I've got ELMAH working on my (Cassini) development server, and was quite happy with it, but now that I'm trying to move everything to my production server (IIS7), the honeymoon looks like being over. I've got past the "gotcha" with IIS7, which frankly could have been better highlighted in the documentation, and if I just use the in-memory log then it works. However, I'm trying to get it to use the SQL Server log (as I do on my development system), and I'm getting an error along the lines of: The EXECUTE permission was denied on the object ELMAH_GetErrorsXml Well, fine. I know how to grant database permissions, but I'm really struggling to understand which user and which stored procs/tables I need to grant access to. The thing that's really confusing me is that I didn't have to do anything like this to get it to work on my development server. The only difference I can see is that on my development server it seems to connect as NT AUTHORITY\IUSR, whereas on my production server it seems to connect as NT AUTHORITY\NETWORK SERVICE. (It's just using a trusted connection so I've not explicitly configured it to do that - I presume it's to do with the web server). UPDATE: I've since established that because I'm using Cassini, it was actually logging in as me (an admin) and not IUSR, which explains why I didn't get any permission problems. On my development server, the IUSR account is a member of the public database role, and has access to the required database (again as "public"). There's no explicit granting of object-level permissions. [See update above - this is irrelevant]. On my production server, I've added NETWORK SERVICE in exactly the same way (public database role, explicit access to the database as "public"). Yet, I get this permission error. Why?!! [See update above - the only reason I don't get a permission error is because I'm running as an admin]. And, of course, if the fact that it works locally is just "luck", I will need to know which SPs/tables to grant access to. My guess would be all 3 SPs and not the table, but it would be good (again) to see some documentation that makes this explicit.

I can create a text file with this information, but we need design time support as well, and it is not practical to have a connection string in every App.Config and Web.config file in the solution.   • How to synchronize SQL Server 2008 database with SQL Server 2005 database?

    I am using VS 2008 Team Suite and SQL Server 2008 in my development environment. I am deploying to a shared-host website with shared-host SQL Server 2005. I want to push changes from my development environment to my production host. I tried using Data | Schema Compare... and it reports to me that it does not support SQL Server 2008. What do people use for this (Besides Red-Gate tools - I use those at my day job, and they rock...this is a volunteer thing for my son's school)? I am looking for something very inexpensive if not free.
