  • using ubuntu command line to replace text in huge file

    hi i have a huge xml file that i must work with. right now the file is only 1 line that contains about 2 million characters which represent 30,000 records. there are no carriage returns or linefeeds whatsoever. what i need to do is make each record on its own line. new records begin with "" and end with "". i've been looking around here and it seems the tools to use are: sed, tr or awk but i'm not sure which is most appropriate. i've tried this to no avail: tr '<ROW' '\012 <ROW' <source.xml |tee destination.xml above seems to output some pretty weird stuff so i must be way off here. maybe its that "<" character that is the problem?

  • Data structure for file search

    I've asked this question before and I got a few answers/idea, but I'm not sure how to implement them. I'm building a telecom messaging solution. Currently, I'm using a database to save my transaction/messages for the network stack I've built, and as you know it's slower than using a data structure (hash, linkedlist, etc...). My problem is that the data can be really huge, and it won't fit in the memory. I was thinking of saving the records in a file and the a key and line number in a hash, then if I want to access some record then I can get the line number from the hash, and get it from the file. I don't know how efficient is this; I think the database is doing a way better job than this on my behalf. Please share whatever you have in mind.

    I am transferring file from one server to another. So, to estimate the time it would take to transfer some GB's of file over the network, I am pinging to that IP and taking the average time. For ex: i ping to 172.26.26.36 I get the average round trip time to be x ms, since ping send 32 bytes of data each time. I estimate speed of network to be 2*32*8(bits)/x = y Mbps -- multiplication with 2 because its average round trip time. So transferring 5GB of data will take 5000/y seconds Am I correct in my method of estimating time. If you find any mistake or any other good method please share.

    GNU recommend make AUTHORS file for list of authors and contributos of a program. But how many "levels" of authors and contributors should contain the file? E.g. I write a program foo, that actively use some library. Should I include authors of the library in the AUTHORS? It seems to yes, because total code of foo contain code from library. But if yes, I should include also authors of all others libraries, including standard libraries of compiler, authors of the compiler and other tools for producing final executable code, authors of OS... When I should stop?

However, if I use this code: using (StreamWriter streamWriter = new StreamWriter("C:/Users/Michael/Documents/Visual Studio 2010/Projects/PuzzleGame/PuzzleGame/PuzzleGameContent/player.TXT", true)) { streamWriter.Write("Hello!"); streamWriter.Close(); } The program will work as intended and add "Hello!" to the save file. Is there any way I can do this without hardcoding the path?

  • -ln links to wrong file

    I've just installed matlab and want to be able to call it from the terminal. It works fine when I explicitly call it from its directory. I cd to /usr/local/bin and type sudo ln -s /usr/local/MATLAB/R2012a/bin/matlab matlab when I then type "matlab" in the terminal, I get the error message "bash: /media/OS/MATLAB/bin/matlab: No such file or directory" I have no idea why it's trying to call matlab from /media. I've tried deleting the file from usr/local/bin but when I create it again the same thing happens. Any help would be very much appreciated.

    I developp a Java application using Windows Desktop Search from which I can retrieve some information about files on my computer such as urls (System.ItemUrl). An example of such url is file://c:/users/ausername/documents/aninterestingfile.txt for "normal" files. This field give also urls of mail items indexed from Outlook or Thunderbird. Thunderbird's items (only available using vista and seven) are also files (.wdseml). But outlook's items urls start with "mapi://" like : mapi://{S-1-5-21-1626573300-1364474481-487586288-1001}/[email protected]($b423dcd5)/0/Inbox/???????????????????????? The problem I have is opening the real item from Java in Outlook using this url. If I copy/paste it in the run dialog of Windows, it works ; it also works if I use "start" followed by the copied/pasted url in command line. The url seems to be encoded in UTF-16.   • "Cannot open user default database" error with "User Instance=True"

    I have a desktop application that uses Sql user instancing. This is my connection string: "Data Source=.\SqlExpress; AttachDbFilename=C:\path\file.mdf; Integrated Security=True; User Instance=True; Connect Timeout=100;" My application creates this DB, downloads a load of data into it from a web service and then does a lot of actions with it. The problem comes when I attempt to re-open the connection. I get a SqlException: "Cannot open user default database. Login failed. Login failed for user 'myDomain\myusername'." This error makes no sense in this context - I have no default database. I'm logging in to an instance created just for the current application, running separately from SqlExpress. There's no other way to connect to this DB. If I start the SqlExpress service and connect to the default instance it won't be visible. It only exists for this application. The file on disk is locked by the SqlExpress instance service running under the application. if I stop the app and restart it the connection works first time, but fails on re-opening. If I just stop the app I can delete the .mdf files and begin again, but it still crashes when I re-open the connection. As my app started the instance running as me my current user should have access to every DB in the instance. This doesn't happen for other users of the same code, which suggests that it's a SQL config issue. Does anyone have any idea what causes this and how to work around it?

    When the links are supposed to open a new window, iphone uiwebview won't trigger an event when user click these links. We had to use javascript to do some trick to the target attribute of the links. I can handle 'a' tag to open in the '_self' window with the trick without problem. But when I do it the same way with the 'base' tag. it doesn't work. I believe the base target is set by the javascript. But the base tag is in the head, which may be handled by the uiwebview before my javascript executed, so the target change may not reflected in the webkit engine. Could someone please give some suggestion, so I can open the link in the same uiwebview?     I'm looking for very specific text editor: Closes on ESC, no project management or tabs Syntax highlighting - preferably with color themes (e.g. can apply different color themes without changing C# coloring definition) or, at least, can load/save themes; support for C/C#/XML/HTML/JavaScript/etc - common MS/.NET world - out of box Configurable keys, or: Shift-Tab shifts blocks XML/HTML auto-completion support - well, optional I use synplus plugin for Total Commander currently, but it has few drawbacks (e.g. crashes sometimes ;-), no auto-completion, etc). Basically I want fast Visual-Studio-like editor that I open, do edits, and then close using ESC. I remember I tried Notepad++, etc - most of them open files in tabs, don't close on ESC... - that is, behave like IDE. At least I've just downloaded Notepad++, it doesn't close on ESC even if I setup keybindings to do so. Autocompletion is optional (though it is to be simple as just tags completion), what I really look for is closing on ESC, not getting in the way with all the tabs and IDE-like, and good coloring. Plus shift-tab is must have for blocks manipulation. Update: any open-source one that I can easily tweak to close on ESC? ;-) Seems like ESC (and reasonable color highlighting) is the core requirement. I've just tried many editors - Programmer's Notepad, E, Crimson, etc - I can't set any of them to close on ESC. Any external tool to close selected program on ESC? ;-) UPDATE: Hm, found an awesome utility for my latest thought: http://www.autohotkey.com. Easy to setup to close any window on ESC (as well as many other tricks). Seems like the most tough requirements is gone - I can use ANY text editor ;-)

  • How can I open VLC via browser with PHP (Mac OS X)

    I'm trying to open VLC via browser and make it instantly play the given video file on Mac OS X. This runs on my local server and is only meant to run locally - therefore I already run apache (MAMP) with my username and with group "staff" (defined in httpd.conf). YES - I do know that VLC has http interface - however that is not what I need, so do not suggest that... My current system works without any problems when I run it via Terminal: php /var/www/Movies/index.php - This leads to VLC opening and video starts playing fullscreen like intented. Problems start when I run the same PHP-page with browser. Then the VLC-process starts, but there's no GUI for it, video file won't start playing and the VLC-process takes nearly 100% of CPU. Both; terminal and browser started VLC-processes run with the same user (mine) Both have "Parent process" bash VLC-process begun with Terminal has empty "Process group" (only process id-number) and browser started has "httpd" + (id-number) VLC-process started via browser makes 1000-times more "Mach System Calls" than it's Terminal-started counterpart.     I'm new to JQuery -- not new to javascript. Was able to open the OSX STYLE DIALOG using the hyperlink button provided in the demo index.html page, but would like to open it on the page load. I read a couple links on StackOverflow (http://stackoverflow.com/questions/1611727/how-do-i-invoke-a-simplemodal-osx-dialog-on-page-load), but still could not get it to work in the exact same index.html page. I finally resorted to a stopgap measure by programmatically invoking the button click of a hidden button element -- see following fragment: onLoad="document.getElementById('load_OSX_Example').click();"> <input type="hidden" id="load_OSX_Example" value="" class='osx'> <script type="text/javascript" language="javascript"> //#### open the OSX Modal ########## $(document).ready(function(){ $("#osx-modal-content").modal(); }); </script> So I have two questions: How can you invoke the class='osx' using javascript/html programmatically? Why won't this work using the $("#osx-modal-content").modal(); call in javascript (see fragment above)? I tried this in multiple browsers, and the only content that displayed on the screen was content of this tag: "div id="osx-modal-title", and there was no error in the jscript console.

  • Open a buffer as a vertical split in VIM

    If you are editing a file in VIM and then you need to open an existing buffer (e.g. from your buffer list: :buffers) how can you open it in a vertical split? I know that you already can open it with a normal split like: :sbuffer N Wehere N is the buffer number you want, however, the above opens that N buffer horizontally, not vertically. I'm also aware that you can change the window placement after opening and have a Vertical Split like so: Ctrl-W H Ctrl-W L Which will vertically split the window to the right or the left. It seems to me that if there is a sbuffer there should be a vsbuffer but that doesn't exist (not that I am aware of) Also, please note that I am not looking for a plugin to solve this question. I know about a wealth of plugins that will allow you to do this. I am sure I might be missing something that is already there. EDIT: In the best spirit of collaboration, I have created a simple Function with a Mapping if someone else stumbles across this issue and do not want to install a plugin: Function: " Vertical Split Buffer Function function VerticalSplitBuffer(buffer) execute "vert belowright sb" a:buffer endfunction Mapping: " Vertical Split Buffer Mapping command -nargs=1 Vbuffer call VerticalSplitBuffer(<f-args>) This accomplishes the task of opening a buffer in a right split, so for buffer 1, you would call it like: :Vbuffer 1

    whenever i use a open source library eg. Doctrine i always ending up coding a class (so called Facade) to use the Doctrine library. so next time i want to create a user i just type: $fields = array('name' => 'peter', 'email' => '[email protected]'); Doctrine_Facade::create_entity($entity, $fields); then it creates an entity with the provided information. so i guess, all coders will create their own "Facade". i wonder how usual it is with open source Facades to download and interact with the open source libraries? is this rare cause i haven't seen any of these. in some frameworks i have seen them called plugins, eg. plugins for twitter api or facebook api. so whenever you download a library, should you search for plugins/facades on the net, or is it better to just try coding your own? i just thought it would be great for everyone not to reinvent the wheel. thanks.

  • Cannot open a SQL2000 DTS package I imported into SQL2008

    I am running into a problem trying to open a SQL2000 DTS package I imported into SQL2008. I set up a new server and installed a fresh install of SQL2008. The database I need to run is a SQL2000 database. I moved the database over with no problem but there are a few DTS packages that need to run in legacy on SQL2008. I exported the DTS packages I need out of SQL2000 and imported them successfully into SQL2008. My SQL2008 server is x64. I can see the DTS packages under Data Transformation Service in Legacy but when I try to open the package I get this message. "SQL Server 2000 DTS Designer components are required to edit DTS packages. Install the special web download, "SQL Server 2000 DTS Designer components" to use this feature. (Microsoft.SqlServer.DtsObjectExplorerUI)" I downloaded the components and installed them and still get this error. I researched and found an article about this not working on x64 so I have an x86 machine that I installed the SQL2008 tools and tried to open the package from there and got the same error. I have spent days on this and need help. Has anyone run across this and can tell me what to do. If you have solved this problem, please help me out. Thanks.

I really don't know how to read struct from file... I tried to read it with ObjectInputStream(), last idea is to read with RandomAccessFile() but I also don't know how to... (readLong(), readDouble() also doesn't work, it works ofcource but doesn't read correct data). So, any idea how to read C struct from binary file with Java?     I have an interesting setup and am not sure how to license a website. I know this is not legal advice, and I am not asking for any. There are so many different Open Source Licenses and I do not have the time to read every last one to see which best fits my situation. Really, I am looking for suggestions and a nudge in the right direction. My setup is: I give away for free version of my web service with a clean website interface. The implementation I use in the actual web site is (almost) identical to what I give away. The main service works the exactly the same way, but the website interface to manage features in the service is fairly different. Really the web interfaces have the same exact backend, and the front ends accomplish the same tasks, but the service I offer on my site is very rich and uses a good deal of javascript, where I kept the interface in the version I give away as simple and javascript-less as possible. Mostly so it is easy to understand and integrate into other sites. I am not entirely sure how I should license this. It is more like I develop an open source service but have a separate site built upon it. I like the GPLv3 but I am not sure if I can use it in this case especially since I am making some money off of google ad's on the site and plan on using amazon affiliates as well. Any help would be greatly appreciated. I do want to open it up as much as possible. But I still want to be able to continue with my own implementation.     Hi there. I'm packaging my open-source non-commercial java application in a .jar and I'd like to package the JDBC mysql-connector with it as it is a dependency. The issue that I am having is that I'm uncertain whether or not this is frowned upon or even illegal due to the JDBC license.
