    hi, i just have a few weeks programming with vc# (2008) and i'm trying to build an application (winforms) and i have the following problem... i need my application to work with and without connection to the mssql database, this sounds like piece of cake for our friend DataSet right? i can persist the data as XML or binary until i can reach the database and the DataSet will magically sync; all without bothering the user. The problem is... the few books i have read just mention that logic like a fairy tale but dont give any practical example of how to do it, can you point me to one example/demo/whatever i can read or download of an application with (equal or) similar logic?

  • Instrumenting Database Access

    Jeff mentioned in one of the podcasts that one of the things he always does is put in instrumentation for database calls, so that he can tell what queries are causing slowness etc. This is something I've measured in the past using SQL Profiler, but I'm interested in what strategies other people have used to include this as part of the application. Is it simply a case of including a timer across each database call and logging the result, or is there a 'neater' way of doing it? Maybe there's a framework that does this for you already, or is there a flag I could enable in e.g. Linq-to-SQL that would provide similar functionality. I mainly use c# but would also be interested in seeing methods from different languages, and I'd be more interested in a 'code' way of doing this over a db platform method like SQL Profiler.

  • Cache for large read only database recommendation

    I am building site on with Spring, Hibernate and Mysql. The mysql database contains information on coordinates and locations etc, it is never updated only queried. The database contains 15000 rows of coordinates and 48000 rows of coordinate connections. Every time a request is processed, the application needs to read all these coordinates which is taking approx 3-4 seconds. I would like to set up a cache, to allow quick access to the data. I'm researching memcached at the moment, can you please advise if this would be my best option?

    I'm getting ready to start a C# web application project and just wanted some opinions regarding pulling data from a database. As far as I can tell, I can either use C# code to access the database from the code behind (i.e. LINQ) of my web app or I can call a stored procedure that will collect all the data and then read it with a few lines of code in my code behind. I'm curious to know which of these two approaches, or any other approach, would be the most efficient, elegant, future proof and easiest to test.

    Hi everybody, I've a question for you. We have built a software that has a single database for each customer. These databases are managed by SQL Server 2008. Now the problem is that when we build our software we, sometimes, need to change something on the schema (like adding table, modifying existing ones etc) and migrate these updates on all the customers' databases. Now this task is accomplished by hand: we generate update scripts and then, using T-SQL, we update each database. This is ok for a small set of customer, but we are now becoming bigger and bigger and we really don't know how to face it. We found Wizardby and it seems interesting, but quite difficult for us to learn in this exact moment. Do you have any other trick? Thanks a lot, Marco

How do you import a CSV file so the fields match their related table? Say you were tying to build a beer database and had a CSV file with each line as a record. Header: brewer, beer_name, country, city, state, beer_category, beer_type, alcohol_content Record 1: Anheuser-Busch, Budweiser, United States, St. Louis, Mo, Pale lager, Regular, 5.0% Record 2: Anheuser-Busch, Bud Light, United States, St. Louis, Mo, Pale lager Light, 4.2% Record 3: Miller Brewing Company, Miller Lite, United States, Milwaukee, WI, Pale lager, Light, 4.2% You can create a "Brewer" table and a "Beer" table. When importing how does you connect the primary keys between the tables?

  • Storing users in a database

    Im wondering whats the best way of storing different types of users in my database. I am writing an application that has 4 main user types (admin, school, teacher, student). At the moment I have a table for each of these but i'm not sure thats the best way of storing user information. For instance... Allowing students to PM other student is simple (store sender and receiver student_id) but enabling teachers to PM students requires another table (sender teacher_id, sender student_id). Should all users be stored in one users table with a user_type field? If so, the teacher / student specific information will still have to be stored in another table. users user_id, password_hash, user_type students user_id, student_specific_stuff... teachers user_id, teacher_specific_stuff... How do I stop a user who has a user_type = student from being accidentally being entered into the teachers table (as both have a user_id) Just want to make sure I get the database correct before i go any further.   • Oracle Logical Standby redo generation

    Oracle 10.2.0.4 database with a logical standby on Win2K3. Recently a rather large delete operation was carried out on the production instance. I'm experiencing difficulty with the logical standby, in that it gets a couple of hundred (58M size) archive logs into the operation and the apply process fails with an out-of-memory error. Unfortunately, every time it fails it has to restart the apply from the beginning of the transaction. This is taking a couple of days each time. Anyway, in trying to resolve this problem, I've noticed that each archive log from the production system generates 5 or 6 log switches on the standby. I don't understand why this should be. Anyone have any ideas? A related question that I've not found the answer for: does anyone know if the logical standby must be running in archivelog mode? I really don't have a need to keep the logs.

    Is it possible to configure Hibernate reverse engineering and code generation tool in such a way that one-to-many relation between tables is mapped to entities inheritance instead of enrites relation? I have Person table and Employee table, which are related with the foreign key (Person contains basic information, Employee the rest). In my Java code I would like this relation mapped to inheritance Employee extends Person. This can be done by hand, but maybe I missed some custom configuration parameter that I can use. I couldn't find any official documentation - docs link on RedHat Hibernate page (http://www.hibernate.org/5.html#A10) is broken...

    I am planning on using Flash Builder 4/Flex to write an AIR application which is primarily based around recording, storing and analyzing data. I'll be creating charts etc that need to update in almost real time. It's essential to me that the application be able to function without an internet connection so I need a local database of some variety, but I would also eventually like to build in online synchronization of the data where either database can be update each other based on newer information.     Most of my database tables have a clear unique index through which lookups are done 90% of the time but I am a bit unsure on this one - I have a table which keeps track of user rating totals for items in my database, I now want to add another table, to track individual ratings with an ip address column to make sure no one can rate something twice. Since I can see this becoming a big, high use table it is important to optimize it correctly. (MYSQL table) This table will have the following fields: rating_id(always - unique), item_id (always - not unique), user_id (optional - not unique), ip_address (always - not unique), rating_value(always - not unique), has_review(bool) Now I envisions 90% the queries going something like this: When a user rates something - select where item_id = x and ip_address = y, (if rows = 0) insert rating When in user account pages - select where ip_address = x or username = y Now none of the fields searched on are unique, can I still use them as indexes (for example item _id and ip_address), can I have two indexes and will this still improve performance over a non indexed table?

  • oracle virtualbox doesn't work for host Kubuntu since Lucid Lynx 10.04

    I have a thinkpad edge 14 core i3 2.4 ghz and 4g ram; I have tried kubuntu 10.04, 10.10, 11.10, 12.04 and 12.10 (all x64 architecture); Both oracle and ose virtualbox only works properly to install XP and windows 7 quest system on kubuntu 10.04; For every other kubuntu release since, the guest installation goes as far as formatting the virtual drive, freezes at this step, and doesn't even go as far as copying files to hard-drive to begin installation. But virtualbox has not stopped responding to commands; I can kill that one specific window with the problem installation ("machine" - "close" - "power off the machine") and start over again without having to force-kill virtualbox application. If anyone knows how I can go about addressing this problem, any help you can provide would be very much appreciated. Thank You.

    Hey guys, So I have been given the host, username, and login information for a MySQL Database. I need a client that I can use to log in to the Database remotely and create/update tables and edit all the data. I found the MySQL Administrator client provided by them, but it seems you can do everything BUT edit the actual data with it. Is there anything like this? Would I be able to use SQL Server Express (or something similar), to connect to a remote server online and do all of this?
