  hi,everyone: I run my python script functions like this: read from a text file, and store the data as dict. • UTF-8 xml file shows Gibberish

  I have a UTF-8 encoded xml file, which was exported from a Wordpress MySQL database. While the file is saved as UTF-8, and the encoding is UTF-8, I get gibberish instead of the Hebrew text that is supposed to be in there, which looks like this: ™×•×˜×•×ª How can I find the original encoding or charset and convert the text into proper Hebrew? PHP's mb_detect_encoding($str); returns UTF-8 Tried all sorts of php encoding functions, with different settings and input/output charsets, but they all just print different looking gibberish blocks, like: ÃâÃËÃâ¢Ãâ¢ÃËà and ?? ××©×ž× ...Any Ideas how to go about this?

• Why does gcc add symbols to non-debug build?

  When I do a release build with gcc (i.e. I do not specify -g), I still seem to end up with symbols in the binary, and have to use strip to remove them. In fact, I can still breakpoint functions and get backtraces in gdb (albeit without line numbers). • spl_object_hash for PHP < 5.2 (unique ID for object instances)

  I'm trying to get unique IDs for object instances in PHP 5+. The function, spl_object_hash() is available from PHP 5.2 but I'm wondering if there's a workaround for older versions. There are a couple of functions in the comments on php.net but they're not working for me.   I have a simple usercontrol that uses a simple custom panel where I just overrode the Orientation and Measure functions. What I want to do is to have a property in the usercontol to control the orientation So I basicaly have UserControl -- Listbox -- MyPanel And I want a property for the usercontrol that can be set in xaml (of type System.Windows.Controls.Orientation ) that I can bind to from my custom panel (or a different approach if binding isnt the right way to do it) It would be a bonus if that property could show up in the properties window and you could select vertical or horizontal. And a super bonus if I could change the property at design time and have the listbox/

  So, I've searched quite a bit for this and can't seem to find a solution. This code works: CGContextRef context = UIGraphicsGetCurrentContext(); [UIView beginAnimations:nil context:context]; [UIView setAnimationDuration:5]; [c setCenter:CGPointMake(200, 200)]; [UIView commitAnimations]; This code doesn't: CGContextRef context = UIGraphicsGetCurrentContext(); [UIView beginAnimations:nil context:context]; [UIView setAnimationBeginsFromCurrentState:YES]; [UIView setAnimationTransition:UIViewAnimationTransitionFlipFromLeft forView:c cache:YES]; [UIView setAnimationDuration:5]; [c exchangeSubviewAtIndex:0 withSubviewAtIndex:1]; [UIView commitAnimations]; And I know the call to exchangeSubViewAtIndex is working because if I remove it from the animation block it functions as expected. Anyone have any insight as to why this transition won't run? Something I need to import?

  I have sorted list of strings that I move between php and java. to be able to bsearch on this data, I need the same comparison function. any idea what string compare functions I can use that will always give the same result in both? eg php's strcmp() vs java's String.compareTo() yes I know I could make my own string compare that does char by char carefully, but I was hoping there's a simple answer. PS, don't care if case sensitive or not, as long as it is consistant.

• Security when using GWT RPC

  I have an POJO in Google Web Toolkit like this that I can retrieve from the server. class Person implements Serializable { String name; Date creationDate; } When the client makes changes, I save it back to the server using the GWT RemoteServiceServlet like this: rpcService.saveObject(myPerson,...) The problem is that the user shouldn't be able to change the creationDate. Since the RPC method is really just a HTTP POST to the server, it would be possible to modify the creationDate by changing the POST request. A simple solution would be to create a series of RPC functions like changeName(String newName), etc., but with a class with many fields would require many methods for each field, and would be inefficient to change many fields at once. I like the simplicity of having a single POJO that I can use on both the server and GWT client, but need a way to do it securely. Any ideas?

I've looked at many - the WPF one, XCeed, Ingragistics, DevExpress, etc.... but none of them seem to offer the simple requirement I have: I want to be able to display group subtotals in their columns in the group row, e.g. GROUP 1 xxxx.xx GROUP 2 xxxx.xx ROW 1 xx.xx ROW 2 xx.xx Does anyone know of a grid that does this, or a nice supporting collection that implements aggregate functions (group totals would need to be used in individual line items) so that existing grids with a bit of XAML styling would work? He mentions that the modal dialog in MFC is not strictly modal, but implemented as a modeless dialog(internally) with bells and whistles to make it behave as a modal one. Specifically, he says: The MFC command routing mechanism uses a combination of message maps and virtual functions to achieve what it does and a true modal dialog will totally wreck this mechanism because then the modal message loop is controlled outside the scope of the MFC command routing machinery Could anyone elucidate this statement? An example of what would have gone wrong if they had tried to implement a truly modal dialog would greatly clear things up.

• PHP Image Link in FUnction 404's

  Hello, I have a valid link that goes to a picture located on my web server. It is a simple jpg image, I can copy and paste this link into my web browser and it loads fine. The issue comes in when I try to call a few php functions on the image... such as getimagesize or fopen... they both return 404 errors even though the image is there. Does anyone know that could be causing this? Thank you for your time.

• Virtual Function Implementation

  Hi, I have kept hearing this statement. Switch..Case is Evil for code maintenance, but it provides better performance(since compiler can inline stuffs etc..). Virtual functions are very good for code maintenance, but they incur a performance penalty of two pointer indirections. Say i have a base class with 2 subclasses(X and Y) and one virtual function, so there will be two virtual tables. The object has a pointer, based on which it will choose a virtual table. So for the compiler, it is more like switch( object's function ptr ) { case 0x....: X->call(); break; case 0x....: Y->call(); }; So why should virtual function cost more, if it can get implemented this way, as the compiler can do the same in-lining and other stuff here. Or explain me, why is it decided not to implement the virtual function execution in this way? Thanks, Gokul.

I know that, in R, functions normally only produce the last thing they evaluate, but I'd like to understand the process better and to learn of any possible workarounds. Thoughts?

  While I can see the value and usefulness of regular expressions, I also find that they are extremely complicated and difficult to create and debug. I am often at the point where I find their usefulness is offset by the difficulty in creating expressions. I am a bit astonished by the fact that there is nothing quite like them and that there hasn't been an effort to recreate them use a more verbose or less arcane syntax. so, are regular expressions here to stay? are there alternatives that are gaining traction? do other people just ignore them and write hundreds of lines of string compare functions?

  Hi there, I am trying to understand how the following builtin functions work when sequentially processing cursor rows. The descriptions come from the Python 3.1 manual (using SQLite3) Cursor.fetchone() Fetches the next row of a query result set, returning a single sequence. Cursor.fetchmany() Fetches the next set of rows of a query result, returning a list. Cursor.fetchall() Fetches all (remaining) rows of a query result, returning a list. So if I have a loop in which I am processing one row at a time using cursor.fetchone(), and some later code requires that I return to the first row, or fetch all rows using fetchall(), how do I do it? The concept is a bit strange to me, especially coming from a Foxpro background which has the concept of a record pointer which can be moved to the 1st or last row in a cursor (go top/bottom), or go to the nth row (go n) Any help would be appreciated.   I am using a simple search that displays search results: @adds = Add.search(params[:search]) In addition to the search results I'm trying to utilize a method, nearbys(), which displays objects that are close in proximity to the search result. The following method displays objects which are close to 2, but it does not display object 2. How do I display object 2 in conjunction with the nearby objects? @adds = Add.find(2).nearbys(10) While the above code functions, when I use search, @adds = Add.search(params[:search]).nearbys(10) a no method error is returned, undefined methodnearbys' for Array:0x30c3278` How can I search the model for an object AND use the nearbys() method AND display all results returned?

• SQLAlchemy custom sorting algorithms when using SQL indexes

  Is it possible to write custom collation functions with indexes in SQLAlchemy? SQLite for example allows specifying the sorting function at a C level as sqlite3_create_collation(). An implementation of some of the Unicode collation algorithm has been provided by James Tauber here, which for example sorts all the "a"'s close together whether they have accents on them or not. Other examples of why this might be useful is for different alphabet orders (languages other than English) and sorting numeric values (sorting 10 after 9 rather than codepoint order.) Is this possible in SQLAlchemy? If not, is it supported by the pysqlite3 or MySQLdb modules, or for any other SQL database modules supported by python for that matter? Any information would be greatly appreciated.

• Unable to access global variable defined in settings.php [Drupal]

  I am developing a website using Drupal 6.16. I want to define a variable in settings.php like $ge_path = 'some/path/here'; And I want to use it inside my modules. function mymodule_block(....) { global $ge_path; $fullPath = $ge_path . '/another/path'; doSomething($fullPath); } But I am getting NULL as the value of $ge_path. Why am I not able to access the global variable defines in settings.php? How can I get the proper value inside my module functions? The funny thing is, I am able to access $db_url['default'] and $db_url['mydatabase'] etc.. which are defined just two lines above $ge_path in settings.php!

This functions as expected in all browsers apart from IE7, where if I scroll the list to choose a time lower down in the list, the list dissapears..   Hi guys, I've got a Roo project where I've made a couple of entities, and when I load up the project in Eclipse it loads up fine, but if I i.e. make an instance MyEntity entity and then write entity. I don't get any of my properties (i.e. getMyField) in the autocompletion list. If I write entity.getMyField() it compiles fine, that is taken care of by the aspects. • When is a scala partial function not a partial function?

  While creating a map of String to partial functions I ran into unexpected behavior. When I create a partial function as a map element it works fine. When I allocate to a val it invokes instead. Trying to invoke the check generates an error. Is this expected? Am I doing something dumb? Comment out the check() to see the invocation.
