• What's the importance of the "title" tag?

  Talking with some other people recently, it came up an interesting topic. The core question at hand is: What's the real importance and weight of the <title> tag in a web site? For instance, what are the consequences if a site has the same <title> tag on all the pages, reporting only the site name? Or better (or worse) no title tag at all? Will that be a little/medium/huge SEO problem? How will the pages appear on search engines? Will fixing it in a later stage be problematic since pages have already been indexed? How does it compromise the overall usability/accessibility/experience? Is that a "feature" that can be omitted, or it can't even be considered a "feature" but a core element? I have quite my opinion on this topic, but I'd really love to hear what other experts (you) think about it.

• Which is more valuable in product development: an action-oriented or visionary bent?

  As a software development professional in a fairly conservative large-firm, I always had a much more action-oriented bent, as my job was fairly stable and all that mattered was doing as I was told and completing tasks that were germane to the career of a benevolent dictator (i.e., my boss' boss). Now that I'm no longer working for "the Man", I find it just as important to use the left side of my brain and wrap my head around this whole "vision thing". Which do you think is more important for software product development in a small, yet feisty start-up: Knowing the path or walking (or running) it?

• HTML5 or Native Android/iOS application?

  I would like to hear your opinion on this debate. I want to build a mobile application which will interact with a server and I was wondering what's the best way to do it. Build the entire application using the HTML5 technology and then just create native "browsing" apps for Android/iOS or to build the Android/iOS apps from scratch? Using the HTML5 will save considerable amounts of time but I don't know if the result will be equally good in both platforms. Building native apps will take much more time but the result will be definitely good. What do you think?

• Determining Cost of API Calls

I think the question is more appropriate here.] I was going through the adwords API and came across their rate sheet - http://code.google.com/apis/adwords/docs/ratesheet.html . They charge $0.25 per 1000 API units and under the 'Operation Costs' sections list the cost (in API units) of different API calls. I am curious - based on what factors do they (and others API developers) calculate the cost of an API call? Is there any simple formula or a standard way to determine this? Note: When I say 'cost' of an API call, I don't mean the money but the API units. For example, how do you determine one API call costs 100 'units' and another 1000?

• What to call objects that may delete cached data to meet memory constraints?

  I'm developing some cross-platform software which is intended to run on mobile devices. Both iOS and Android provide low memory warnings. I plan to make a wrapper class that will free cached resources (like textures) when low memory warnings are issued (assuming the resource is not in use). If the resource returns to use, it'll re-cache it, etc... I'm trying to think of what this is called. In .Net, it's similar to a "weak reference" but that only really makes sense when dealing with garbage collection, and since I'm using c++ and shared_ptr, a weak reference already has a meaning which is distinct from the one I'm thinking of. There's also the difference that this class will be able to rebuild the cache when needed. What is this pattern/whatever is called? Edit: Feel free to recommend tags for this question.

• Double sides face with two normals

  I think this isn't possible, but I just want to check this: Is it possible to create a face in opengl that has two normals? So: I want the inside and outside of some cilinder to be drawn, but I want the lights to do as expected and not calculate it for the normal given. I was trying to do this with backface culling off, so I would have both faces, but the light was wrongly calculated of course. Is this possible, or do I have to draw an inside and an outside? So draw twice?

• What percentage of software developers work solo?

  I'm trying to put together some ideas for a talk, and one of the things that occurred to me, is if there's any documentation or research into how many programmers work as the lone developer within their team. I think this is an important distinction because individual developers (and perhaps small team developers) end up having to wear many more hats than developers part of a large developer group. It could give us some better insight to career development and transition tactics, as well. I've tried some generally googling, and wasn't able to turn up anything, so I'm hoping maybe someone has seen (or studied) something related to this. Thanks in advance!

• Keystore and Credential Store interplay in OWSM - 11g

  One of the most common problems faced by customer's is the use of the keystore and it's interplay with the credential store.Here is a picture that describes these relationships.(Click on the picture for a larger image). The picture makes some assumptions in describing the relationship. Some of assumptions are: a) the key used for signing and encryption are the same. b) A keystore can have multiple keys and each key can have it's own alias. In the picture I show only a single key with alias "orakey". c) The keystore being described here is a JKS keystore. Things can vary slightly for other type of keystores. I hope to have a detailed How To that provides the larger picture and then shows these relationships in that context and this picture was created in the context of that How-To. However I think people will find this picture useful on a standalone basis as well. The <serviceInstance> is the entry you will find in jps-config.xml

• Swap partition not recognized (The disk drive with UUID=... is not ready yet or not present)

  I think I had an encrypted swap partition, because I chose to encrypt my home directory during the installation. I believe that's what the line with /dev/mapper/cryptswap1 ... in my /etc/fstab is all about. I did something to bork my swap because on the next boot, I got a message (paraphrased): The disk drive for /dev/mapper/cryptswap1 is not ready yet or not present. Wait to continue. Press S to skip or M to manually recover. (As a side note, pressing S or M seemed to do nothing different from just waiting.) Here's what I've tried: This tutorial on how to fix the swap partition not mounting. However, in the above, the mkswap command fails because the device is busy. So I booted from a live USB, ran GParted to reformat the swap partition (which showed up as an unknown fs type), and chrooted into the broken system to try that tutorial again. I also adjusted /etc/initramfs-tools/conf.d/resume and /etc/fstab to reflect the new UUID generated from formatting the partition as a swap. That still didn't work; instead of /dev/mapper/cryptswap1 not present, "The disk drive with UUID=[swap partition's UUID] is not ready yet or not present..." So I decided to start afresh as though I never had created a swap partition in the first place. From the Live USB, I deleted the swap partition altogether (which, again showed up in GParted as an unknown fs type), removed the swap and cryptswap entries in /etc/fstab as well as removed /etc/initramfs-tools/conf.d/resume and /etc/crypttab. At this point the main system shouldn't be considered broken because there is no swap partition and no instructions to mount one, right? I didn't get any errors during startup. I followed the same instructions to create and encrypt the swap partition, starting with creating a partition for the swap, though I think fdisk said a reboot was necessary to see changes. I was confident the 3rd process above would work, but the problem yet persists. • Organizing ASP.Net Single Page Application with Nancy

  As a personal project, I'm creating a single page, asp.net web application using Nancy to provide RESTful services to the single page. Due to the complexity of the single page, particularly the JavaScripts used, I've think creating a dedicated project for the client side of web development and another for service side will organize and simplify the development. solution | +-- web / client side (single html page, js, css) | - contains asp.net project, and nancy library | to host the modules in application project folder | +-- application / service (nancy modules, bootstrap for other layer) | . . . and other layers (three tier, domain driven, etc) . Is this a good way of organizing a complex single page application? Am I over-engineering the web app, incurring too much complexity?

• What simple techniques do you use to improve performance?

  I'm talking about the way we write simple routines in order to improve performance without making your code harder to read... for instance, this is the typical for we learned: for(int i = 0; i < collection.length(); i++ ){ // stuff here } But, I usually do this when a foreach is not applicable: for(int i = 0, j = collection.length(); i < j; i++ ){ // stuff here } I think this is a better approach since it will call the length method once only... my girlfriend says it's cryptic though. Is there any other simple trick you use on your own developments?

• Problem with homepage's SEO when using subfolders in a multi language website

  After watching a hundreds of threads about multilanguage website I haven't found an answer to my specific problem, so I think its not a common issue and I must have done something terribly wrong ;-) We have a brand.com website in DE main language and the following subfolders: /de/ = canonical of / + redirect to / /it/ /en/ When I crawl google.com for EN keywords or google.it for IT keywords then I get as results the homepage in German language (both title and description) as the top result with no trace of the /it/ or the /en/ homepage. Is this because /it/ and /en/ both needs a separate link building strategy? I've already configured Google webmaster tool into the following way: brand.com, no language preference brand.com/de/, de language brand.com/it/, it language brand.com/en/, en language Perhaps having "/" as DE main page is it wrong and I should use a different approach? i.e. like having "/" to be a 301 to /de/ instead ? • Phones, Nokia, Microsoft and More

  The phone revolution that is under way at the moment is insanely interesting and continuously full of buzz about directions, failures, and promises. The movement started with Apple completely reinventing what a smart phone was all about and now we have the followers. Though – don’t dismiss the followers, they are usually the ones that come out with the leap frog products when most of the world is thinking about jumping on. Remember the often used analogy – the USA invented the TV – but it was Japan that took it to the next level and now all TVs are from somewhere else other than the USA. Really there are two camps for the phones – the Cool Kids and other kids that no one wants to hang out with anymore. When it comes to cool – for some reason, the phone is an important part of that factor. Everyone wants to show their phone and its configuration (apps installed, etc) to their friends as a sign of (1) “I have money” and (2) I have smarts/tastes/style/etc when it comes to my applications that are on my phone. For those that don’t know – the Cool Kids include: Apple – this is quite obvious as everything Apple produces is in the cool camp. Just having an Apple product on your person means you can dance. Google – this is one of the more interesting releases as they have created something called Android (which in it’s own right is a major brand in itself). Microsoft – you might be saying “Really, Microsoft is cool?”. I would argue that they are indeed cool as it is now associated with XBOX 360, Kinect, and Windows 7. Gone are the days of Bob and that silly paperclip. Well – that’s it. There is nobody else I would stick in that camp. The other kids that weren’t picked for that dodgeball team include: Nokia Motorola Palm Blackberry and many many more The sad part of all this is that no matter what this second camp does now, it won’t be able to get out of this bucket easily. They will always be associated as yesterday’s technology and that association will drive the sales of the phone purchasers of the world. For those in that group, the only possible way out is to get invited to the cool club by one of the cool club members in the hope that their coolness somehow rubs off. To me, this is the move that Nokia is making. They are at this point where they have realized that they don’t have the full scope of the required end to end solution to make this all work. They have the plants to build the phones and the reach of the retailers that sell what they have. What they are missing is the proper operating system for the new world of multi-touch form factor phones. Even the companies that come up with some sort of new operating system for this type of new device, they are still associated with the yesterday and lack the developer community behind them to be the real wave of adoption that this market needs. Think about that – this is a major different between Nokia/Blackberry when you compare it to the likes of Apple, Google, and Microsoft. These three powerhouses having a very large and strong development community that will eagerly take on new initiatives using the skillsets that they have already cultivated over the years of already working with the company. This then results in a plethora of applications that are then placed on an app store of some kind. The developer gets a cut and then Apple/Google/Microsoft then get their cut. It is definitely a win-win. None of the other phone companies and wannabies can provide the same results. What Microsoft was missing was the major phone manufactures coming on board to create and push forward with the phones that are required to start the wave. This is where Nokia can come in and help Microsoft. They have the ability to promote the Windows Phone operating system on a new wave of phones. This does mean that Nokia will sell phones, but they lose out on the application store that they might have been thinking about making some money on as well as controlling the end to end solution. What is interesting is in questioning to oneself if Microsoft will purchase Nokia. It really depends upon how they want to compete and with whom Microsoft views as the major competitor. For instance, they can purchase Nokia and have their own hardware company and distribution network for phones – thereby taking on a model that is quite similar to Apple. On the other hand, they could just leave it up to the phone hardware companies such as Nokia and others to build and promote phones in a model that is similar to Google. Both ways have pluses and minuses. If they own the phone manufacturer, they really can put some thought into the design and technical specifications of the phone that is really designed to exactly how they want it. Microsoft has shown that they have this ability – especially with the XBOX initiative they have done over the years. Think about how good and powerful they have moved forward with XBOX – and I am not talking about just copying what others are doing, but coming up with leapfrog products that are steps ahead of everyone else. Though, if they didn’t do it themselves, they could then leave it up to the phone manufacturers to drive each other to build better and better phones that run the Microsoft OS – competition drives better products. We have seen this with the Android line of phones that are out there on the market. I have read a lot about Nokia investors really upset about the new Microsoft relationship – but really, this is a great thing. I for one am a fan of this relationship (I am also a Nokia stock holder btw). This will mean better days for Nokia.

• OpenGL: Filtering/antialising textures in a 2D game

  I'm working on a 2D game using OpenGL 1.5 that uses rather large textures. I'm seeing aliasing effects and am wondering how to tackle those. I'm finding lots of material about antialiasing in 3D games, but I don't see how most of that applies to 2D games - e.g. antisoptric filtering seems to make no sense, FSAA doesn't sound like the best bet either. I suppose this means texture filtering is my best option? Right now I'm using bilinear filtering, I think: glTexParameterf(GL_TEXTURE_2D, GL_TEXTURE_MIN_FILTER, GL_LINEAR); glTexParameterf(GL_TEXTURE_2D, GL_TEXTURE_MAG_FILTER, GL_LINEAR); From what I've read, I'd have to use mipmaps to use trilinear filtering, which would drive memory usage up, so I'd rather not. I know the final sizes of all the textures when they are loaded, so can't I somehow size them correctly at that point? (Using some form of texture filtering).

• Cannot assign keys to Wacom scroll wheel anymore

  Hi all, my Wacom Graphire 4 used to work perfectly well until, I think, Ubuntu 10.4. At that point something changed in the configuration and I couldn't assign a key to the scroll wheel anymore (note: the pad's scroll wheel, not the mouse's), i.e this command: xsetwacom set "Wacom Graphire4 6x8 pad" AbsWDn "key +" returns silently without error but nothing happens. Same goes for AbsWUp, RelWDn, RelWUp. Apparently though the problem is even deeper as pressing the wheel in a xev window doesn't seem to have any effect. Moreover I am thoroughly confused on how the various pieces (kernel driver, xorg driver, evdev, HAL, xinput?) are supposed to work together and if the wacom module that ships with Ubuntu is the one from linuxwacom or not. Any ideas? I don't want to become an X.org hacker just to understand what's going on... it used to work! NOTE: I have already read question 3940, but that's not the same problem.

• It's noisy in ubuntu,why?

  I just installed an ubuntu on my pc(Dell Inspiration I560SR-358, with CPU E5700 3GHz, 4G memory, and NVIDIA GeForce G310). The pc becomes noisy before that it's quiet with a windows 7 on it. How come? How to set it to be quiet again in unbuntu 10.04. One of the two cpu usage is always 100%. I think that is the reason. //re-edit Everything gets ok after I restart the computer.But the fan is still running which makes it noisy, if i switch to windows 7, it becomes quiet again.

• Drawing simple geometric figures with DrawUserPrimitives?

  I'm trying to draw a simple triangle based on an array of vertex. I've been searching for a tutorial and I found a simple example on riemers but I couldn't get it to work. I think it was made for XNA 3 and it seems there were some changes to XNA 4? Using this example: http://www.riemers.net/eng/Tutorials/XNA/Csharp/Series1/The_first_triangle.php I get this error: Additional information: The current vertex declaration does not include all the elements required by the current vertex shader. TextureCoordinate0 is missing. I'm not english so I'm having some trouble to understand everything. For what I understand error is confusing because I'm trying to draw a triangle color based and not texture based and it shouldn't need a texture. Also I saw some articles about dynamic shadows and lights and I would like to know if this is the kind of code used to do it with some tweaks like culling because I'm wondering if its heavy code for performance in real time.

• 3D BSP rendering for maps made in 2d platform style

  I wish to render a 3D map which is always seen from top, camera is in sky and always looking at earth. Sample of a floor layout: I don't think I need complex structures like BSP trees to render them. I mean I can divide the map in grids and render them like done in 2D platform games. I just want to know if this is a good idea and what may go wrong if I don't choose a BSP tree rendering here. Please also mention is any better known rendering techniques are available for such situations.

• What should be included in risk management section of software's architecture documentation?

  I am going to develop a Java application (a Spring Web application that will be used to extract data from various data sources) and I want to include risk management of the software in the architecture documentation. By risk management (I am not sure if this is the right name) I mean documenting possibilities of what can go wrong with the software and what to do in those cases. At first I tried to draft some lists, including things like database performance decrease, change of external components that the software interacts with, security breaches etc. But as I am not an experienced developer I cannot rely on those drafts, I don't think they are exhaustive. I searched web hoping to find something similar to the Joel Test or to find any other resource that will cite the most popular causes of problems that should be included and analyzed in risk management documentation, but I haven't found much. Finally, my question is: What should be included in risk management section of software's architecture documentation?

• Dynamic vs Statically typed languages for websites

  Wanted to hear what others thought about this statement: I’ll contrast that with building a website. When rendering web pages, often you have very many components interacting on a web page. You have buttons over here and little widgets over there and there are dozens of them on a webpage, as well as possibly dozens or hundreds of web pages on your website that are all dynamic. With a system with a really large surface area like that, using a statically typed language is actually quite inflexible. I would find it painful probably to program in Scala and render a web page with it, when I want to interactively push around buttons and what-not. If the whole system has to be coherent, like the whole system has to type check just to be able to move a button around, I think that can be really inflexible.   Note: This is not a 'give your opinion' question about C++03 and C++11. Our game engine, written in C++03, is designed to be compiled on Windows, OSX and iOS. Linux support is planned for the (very) near future. Our experience is limited when it comes to consoles, which is why I am asking this question. Currently, we are debating whether switching to C++11 and using non-compatible features of the C++11 standard could pose a problem in the near future when we need to port our engine to any of the current gen consoles (perhaps the compilers supported by some console(s) do not support C++11 yet? We don't know...). So, game developers who have experience across multiple platforms and consoles, do you think we should stick to C++03 until the new generation of consoles arrive and most everybody has switched to C++11 standard (have they already?). Or are most consoles using/support compilers (VC++, GCC or variants?) that are already supporting C++11 features?

  In Martin Fowler's book Refactoring, Fowler speaks of how when developers learn something new, they don't consider when it's inappropriate for the job: Ten years ago it was like that with objects. If someone asked me when not to use objects, it was hard to answer. [...] It was just that I didn't know what those limitations were, although I knew what the benefits were. Reading this, it occurred to me I don't know what the limitations or potential disadvantages of Object-Oriented Programming are. What are the limitations of Object Oriented Programming? When should one look at a project and think "OOP is not best suited for this"?

• Connecting/Removing a Second Monitor with Multiple Workspaces

  I am running 12.04 on a laptop. I use workspaces extensively to manage different projects. When I take my laptop home, I plug in an additional monitor. The problem I am having is that whenever I plug in the additional monitor, all of my windows, regardless of what workspace they were in before I connected the additional monitor, move to workspace 1. This forces me to go through all the windows and manually move the windows back to where I had them. I don't think adding a monitor to each workspace should cause windows to move around between workspaces. Any thoughts or ideas on how to fix this? Know of any workarounds? Thanks in advance!
