• How can you set a time limit for a PowerShell script to run for?

  I want to set a time limit on a PowerShell (v2) script so it forcibly exits after that time limit has expired. I see in PHP they have commands like set_time_limit and max_execution_time where you can limit how long the script and even a function can execute for. With my script, a do/while loop that is looking at the time isn't appropriate as I am calling an external code library that can just hang for a long time. I want to limit a block of code and only allow it to run for x seconds, after which I will terminate that code block and return a response to the user that the script timed out. I have looked at background jobs but they operate in a different thread so won't have kill rights over the parent thread. Has anyone dealt with this or have a solution? Thanks!

  Hi, I have a bunch of items – for simplicity reasons – a flat table with unique names seeded via bulk insert: create table #items ( ItemName NVARCHAR(255) ) The database has this structure: create table Statements ( Id INT IDENTITY NOT NULL, Version INT not null, FurtherDetails varchar(max) null, ProposalDateTime DATETIME null, UpdateDateTime DATETIME null, ProposerFk INT null, UpdaterFk INT null, primary key (Id) ) create table Item ( StatementFk INT not null, ItemName NVARCHAR(255) null, primary key (StatementFk) ) Here Item is a child of Statement (inheritance). I would like to insert items in #items using a set based approach (avoiding triggers and loops). Can this be achieved with OUTPUT in my scenario. A ‘loop based’ approach is just too slow where I use something like this: insert into Statements (Version, FurtherDetails, ProposalDateTime, UpdateDateTime, ProposerFk, UpdaterFk) VALUES (1, null, getdate(), getdate(), @user_id, @user_id) etc. This is a start for the OUTPUT based approach – but I am not sure whether this would work in my case as ItemName is only inserted into Item: insert into Statements ( Version, FurtherDetails, ProposalDateTime, UpdateDateTime, ProposerFk, UpdaterFk ) output inserted.Id ... ???   I need some way to loop in a single line. Is there a way to simulate new lines in AutoIt? Because if I try While 1 MsgBox (0,1,2) Wend It will not work. So I was wondering if there is a way to simulate a new line, something like While 1 - MsgBox (0,1,2) - Wend Or some function to do this. I also already tried to make this: Func repeat($func, $limit) $i = 0 While $i <= $limit Execute($func) $i = $i + 1 WEnd EndFunc But it only executes Execute($func) once, even if I change While $i <= $limit for While 1. • Forked Function not assigning pointer

  In the code below I have a function int GetTempString(char Query[]); calling it in main works fine. However, when calling the function from a fork the fork hangs (stops running, no errors, no output) before this line: pch = strtok (Query," ,"); the printf shows that the pointer to pch is null. Again this only happens when the fork is executing it. • .NET SerialPort.Read skipps bytes

  Solution Reading the data byte wise via "port.ReadByte" is too slow, the problem is inside the SerialPort class. i changed it to reading bigger chunks via "port.Read" and there are now no buffer overruns. although i found the solution myself, writing it down helped me and maybe someone else has the same problem and finds this via google... (how can i mark it as answered?) EDIT 2 by setting port.ReadBufferSize = 2000000; i can delay the problem for ~30 seconds. so it seems, .Net really is too slow... since my application is not that critical, i just set the buffer to 20MB, but i am still interested in the cause. EDIT i just tested something i had not thought of before (shame on me): port.ErrorReceived += (object self, SerialErrorReceivedEventArgs se_arg) => { Console.Write("| Error: {0} | ", System.Enum.GetName(se_arg.EventType.GetType(), se_arg.EventType)); }; and it seems that i have an overrun. Is the .Net implementation too slow for 500k or is there an error on my side? Original Question i built a very primitive oszilloscope (avr, which sends adc data over uart to an ftdi chip). On the pc side i have a WPF Programm that displays this data. The Protokoll is: two sync bytes (0xaffe) - 14 data bytes - two sync bytes - 14 data bytes - ... i use 16bit values, so inside the 14 data bytes are 7 channels (lsb first). I verified the uC Firmware with hTerm, and it does send and receive everything correct. But, if i try to read the data with C#, sometimes some bytes are lost. The oszilloscop programm is a mess, but i created a small sample application, which has the same symptoms. I added two extension methods to a) read one byte from the COM Port and ignore -1 (EOF) and b) wait for the sync pattern. The sample programm first syncs onto the data stream by waiting for (0xaffe) and then compares the received bytes with the expected values. the loop runs a few times until an assert failed message pops up. I could not find anything about lost bytes via google, any help would be appreciated.   I want to run program as daemon in remote machine in Unix. I have rsh connection and I want the program to be running after disconnection. It is waiting for util stopping (I checked it. If util.cpp is returning than it is ok.), but I don't understand why?! There are two questions: 1) Why is it paused when I run it through rsh? I am sure that I chose some stupid way to run daemon. So 2) How to run some program as daemon in C/C++ in unix-like platforms. Tnx!

• Can I find out which thread is running using Eclipse?

  I close my application by pressing a "Close" button. But in the Eclipse I see a red square indicating that something is still running. When I press this red square, I kill my application completely. Is it possible to find out what is still running (which method, which loop) using Eclipse? P.S. I am a newbie. So, it would be nice to have a simple solution. I also might not understand your answer if you use "technical" words which I do not know.

  I have a question about third party created JQuery plug ins and API's and the methodology for understanding them. Recently I downloaded the JQuery Masonry/Infinite scroll plug in and I couldn't figure out how to configure it based on the instructions. So I downloaded a fully developed demo, then manually deleted everything that wouldn't break the functionality. The code that was left allowed me to understand the plug in much greater detail than the documentation.   This is what I'm doing right now (name is UNIQUE): SELECT * FROM fruits WHERE name='apple'; Check if the query returned any result. If yes, don't do anything. If no, a new value has to be inserted: INSERT INTO fruits (name) VALUES ('apple'); Instead of the above is it ok to insert the value into the table without checking if it already exists? If the name already exists in the table, an error will be thrown and if it doesn't, a new record will be inserted. Right now I am having to insert 500 records in a for loop, which results in 1000 queries. Will it be ok to skip the "already-exists" check?

  I am trying to program a game in which I have a Table class and each person sitting at the table is a separate thread. The game involves the people passing tokens around and then stopping when the party chime sounds. how do i program the run() method so that once I start the person threads, they do not die and are alive until the end of the game One solution that I tried was having a while (true) {} loop in the run() method but that increases my CPU utilization to around 60-70 percent. • What's the fastest way to scrape a lot of pages in php?

  I have a data aggregator that relies on scraping several sites, and indexing their information in a way that is searchable to the user. I need to be able to scrape a vast number of pages, daily, and I have ran into problems using simple curl requests, that are fairly slow when executed in rapid sequence for a long time (the scraper runs 24/7 basically). Running a multi curl request in a simple while loop is fairly slow. I speeded it up by doing individual curl requests in a background process, which works faster, but sooner or later the slower requests start piling up, which ends up crashing the server. Are there more efficient ways of scraping data? perhaps command line curl?

There is no enclosing protocol that indicates how many packets there are in the frame. In looking through the plugins included with the wireshark source code, I didn't see any protocols that did any looping like this. I know other protocols pack multiple payloads per frame. What is the cannonical or standard way to handle protocols like this in a Wireshark dissector?
