  I have 3 tables that are unrelated (related that each contains data for a different social network). I cannot simply replicate the aforementioned query, because two or more employees from the same company might be involved in the same trade. This query should do the trick: SELECT SUM(profit) FROM trades JOIN (SELECT DISTINCT tradeID FROM trades WHERE trades.corporationID = 1) ... unfortunately, DISTINCT JOINs seem crazy ineffective. Is there any alternative I can use to determine how much revenue a corporation has, taking into account that a corporation might be listed several times with the same tradeID?

• Faster Insertion of Records into a Table with SQLAlchemy

  I am parsing a log and inserting it into either MySQL or SQLite using SQLAlchemy and Python. Right now I open a connection to the DB, and as I loop over each line, I insert it after it is parsed (This is just one big table right now, not very experienced with SQL). I then close the connection when the loop is done. The summarized code is: log_table = schema.Table('log_table', metadata, schema.Column('id', types.Integer, primary_key=True), schema.Column('time', types.DateTime), schema.Column('ip', types.String(length=15)) .... engine = create_engine(...) metadata.bind = engine connection = engine.connect() .... for line in file_to_parse: m = line_regex.match(line) if m: fields = m.groupdict() pythonified = pythoninfy_log(fields) #Turn them into ints, datatimes, etc if use_sql: ins = log_table.insert(values=pythonified) connection.execute(ins) parsed += 1 My two questions are: Is there a way to speed up the inserts within this basic framework? Maybe have a Queue of inserts and some insertion threads, some sort of bulk inserts, etc? When I used MySQL, for about ~1.2 million records the insert time was 15 minutes. With SQLite, the insert time was a little over an hour. Does that time difference between the db engines seem about right, or does it mean I am doing something very wrong?

• Mysql - wondering about scaling a twitter-like application ?

  Hi, I'm developing an app that is vaguely similar to twitter, in that it allows users to follow one another. I wanted to do this using google app engine, for its scalability promises, but it's proving kind of difficult to get running for a few different reasons. I'd basically like to have a _users table, and a _followers table. Users go into the users table, follower relationships go into _followers. The problem is that each row in the users table will probably have like 100 corresponding records in the _followers table as users start following one another. So the number of rows is going to explode quickly. Using app engine, the volume [shouldn't] be a problem. If I go with mysql, and I do actually start to get some traction, how do I scale this up? Am I going to just end up moving to a distributed database in the end anyway? Should I fight it out with google app engine? I read that Twitter was using mysql, and they've run into this problem, and are now switching to cassandra. Thanks

• multiple dependent android projects in eclipse

  Hi there! I just started to play with android dev and java+eclipse is pretty new to me. I managed to create simple project and run it on my device. Now I want to create simple game (more of them actually) and I would love to use shared code base for all of them (game loop, initialization, etc..). Problem is that I have no idea how to correctly do this. I created android project called engine with all basic stuff that I need and made it work on device. Now I tried to create another project in same workspace called mygame. Main class (activity) of mygame is MyGameApp which inherits from EngineApp (main activity of my engine project) which inherits from Activity. I added engine project into required projects in mygame build path tab in properties. Problem is that when I try to run this project it crashes on ClassNotFoundException trying to find my MyGameApp class. Any help (or pointer to some articles that explain how this is done) is greatly appreciated. few hours of googling didn't help much :/

  I have my application online on the Google Apps Engine. When I deploy this application, this error is generated. I am using Netbeans 6.9. My jdk is installed at : "C:\Program Files\Java\jdk1.6.0_23\". I have installed Google App Engine for Java. This application is getting deployed & run on localhost very well. I am also able to start Google App Engine Server. I have set Environment variables as : 1) classpath : C:\Program Files\Java\jdk1.6.0_23\bin; 2) path : C:\Program Files\Java\jdk1.6.0_23\bin; 3) JAVA_HOME : C:\Program Files\Java\jdk1.6.0_23\bin; 4) include : C:\Program Files\Java\jdk1.6.0_23\include; 5) lib : C:\Program Files\Java\jdk1.6.0_23\lib; However, in system32, I am not finding java.exe, javac.exe or javawc.exe. Also, while running this : 1) java.exe 2) javac.exe 3) java -version from Command Line, they give proper output. How do I make my application properly deployed ?

  I've written a program which should query the Terminal Services API and print out some state information about the sessions running on a terminal services box. I'm using the WTSQuerySessionInformation function to do this and it's returning some data but most of the data seems to be missing... Does anyone know why? • MSDTC attempts to enlist client machine in a distributed transaction

  Hi there We're seeing the following intermittent warning logged by MSDTC: A caller has attempted to propagate a transaction to a remote system, but MSDTC network DTC access is currently disabled on machine 'X'. Please review the MS DTC configuration settings. However, MSDTC is disabled on machine X by design - it's a client machine, and has no business being enlisted in the transaction! Several windows service endpoints hosting WCF services over TCP Single SQL Server 2005 instance beneath Linq to Sql Remote client receives event callbacks over WCF/TCP The issue is tricky to reproduce - usually following restart of services. We suspect a callback to the client machine is occurring within the context of a transaction. Just wondering if anyone has seen similar issues?? Ken

• Configuring multiple distinct WCF binding configurations causes an exception to be thrown

  I have a set of IIS7-hosted net.tcp WCF services that serve my ASP.NET MVC web application. The web application is accessed over the internet. WCF Services (IIS7) <--> ASP.NET MVC Application <--> Client Browser The services are username authenticated, the account that a client (of my web application) uses to logon ends up as the current principal on the host. I want one of the services to be authenticated differently, because it serves the view model for my logon view. When it's called, the client is obviously not logged on yet. I figure Windows authentication serves best or perhaps just certificate based security (which in fact I should use for the authenticated services as well) if the services are hosted on a machine that is not in the same domain as the web application. That's not the point here though. Using multiple TCP bindings is what's giving me trouble. I tried setting it up like this: <bindings> <netTcpBinding> <binding> <security mode="TransportWithMessageCredential"> <message clientCredentialType="UserName"/> </security> </binding> <binding name="public"> <security mode="Transport"> <message clientCredentialType="Windows"/> </security> </binding> </netTcpBinding> </bindings> The thing is that both bindings don't seem to want live together in my host. When I remove either of them, all's fine but together they produce the following exception on the client: The requested upgrade is not supported by 'net.tcp://localhost:8081/Service2.svc'. This could be due to mismatched bindings (for example security enabled on the client and not on the server). In the server trace log, I find the following exception: Protocol Type application/negotiate was sent to a service that does not support that type of upgrade. Am I looking into the right direction or is there a better way to solve this?

The time allotted to this operation may have been a portion of a longer timeout. This may be because the service is still processing the operation or because the service was unable to send a reply message. Please consider increasing the operation timeout (by casting the channel/proxy to IContextChannel and setting the OperationTimeout property) and ensure that the service is able to connect to the client how to increase the time out and how?What is the best solution.

• Remote EJB lookup issue with WebSphere 6.1

  I've seen this question asked before, but I've tried various solutions proposed, to no avail. Essentially, I have two EJB enterprise applications, that need to communicate with one another. The first is a web application, the second is a search server - they are located on different development servers, not in the same node, cell, or JVM, although they are on the same physical box. I'm doing the JNDI lookup via IIOP, and the URL I am using is as follows: iiop://searchserver:2819 In my hosts file, I've set searchserver to 127.0.0.1. The ports for my search server are bound to this hostname too. However, when the web app (that uses Spring btw) attempts to lookup the search EJB, it fails with the following error. This is driving me nuts, surely this kind of comms between the servers should be fairly simple to get working. I've checked the ports and they are correct. I note that the exception says the initial context is H00723Node03Cell/nodes/H00723Node03/servers/server1, name: ejb/com/hmv/dataaccess/ejb/hmvsearch/HMVSearchHome. This is the web apps server NOT the search server. Is this correct? How can I get Spring to use the right context? • Getting a .Net remoting service accessible with IP v6 and IP v4

  My company has an existing .Net Remoting service that listens on a port, fronting interfaces used by external systems. This all works great with IP v4 based communications. However, this service now needs to support both IP v4 communications and IP v6 communications. I have found info that the system.runtime.remoting section of the app.config should include two channels as follows: <channel ref="tcp" name="tcp6" port="9000" bindTo="[::]" /> <channel ref="tcp" name="tcp4" port="9000" bindTo="0.0.0.0" /> I've tried this. For communications to this service and a direct response back, this works great. Some of the communications instead return a stream back, either for uploading or downloading large files. These calls fail with the an ArgumentException: IPv4 address 0.0.0.0 and IPv6 address ::0 are unspecified addresses that cannot be used as a target address. Parameter name: hostNameOrAddress How should these config values be modified so that the client will know how to communicate back to the .Net remoting service?

EDIT: I use exchange so its a little different, but its called a smart host in exchange, but in plain SMTP service config i think its called something else. Cant remember exactly the setting name. Thank you for pointing me at the Smart host field. Mail is getting delivered now. In the Default SMTP Virtual Server properties, the Delivery tab, click Advanced and fill the "Smart host" field with the address that your provider gives you. • Device driver with generic communication media layer

  Greetings all, I'm trying to implement driver for an embedded device with generic communication media layer. Not sure what is the best way to do it so I'm seeking an advice from more experienced stackoverflow users:). Basically we've got devices around the country communicating with our head office. Usual form of communication is over TCP/IP, but could be also using usb, RF dongle, IR, etc. The plan is to have object corresponding with each of these devices, handling the proprietary protocol on one side and requests/responses from other internal systems on the other. The thing is how create something generic in between the media and the handling objects. I had a play around with the TCP dispatcher using boost.asio but trying to create something generic seems like a nightmare :). Anybody tried to do something like that? From the Jboss log, it looks like it does not have a global JNDI name? Is this ok? What have I done wrong?
