  • Would SQL certification be a good idea to compensate for a gap in experience?

    - by SK9
I have a couple of years of experience with SQL Server, mostly basic tasks of writing queries and stored procedures, but have not been employed for a number of years (getting my masters in a totally unrelated field). I've been applying for months and no prospects yet as it seems most companies are worried about the gap in my employment. Do you think it would be worthwhile to get a SQL certification? I'd really appreciate your insights since I truly don't know what to do. Thanks!

  • Which game engine for HTML5 + Node.js

    - by Chrene
I want to create a realtime multiplayer game using and HTML5. I want to use node.js as the server, and I only need to be able to render images in a canvas, play some sounds, and do some basic animations. The gameloop should be done in the server, and the client should do callback via sockets to render the canvas. I am not going to spend any money on the engine, and I don't want to use cocos2d-javascript.

  • EF Doesn't Like Same Named Tables

    - by Anthony Trudeau
Originally posted on: http://geekswithblogs.net/tonyt/archive/2013/07/02/153327.aspxIt's another week and another restriction imposed by the Entity Framework (EF). Don't get me wrong. I like EF, but I don't like how it restricts you in different ways. At this point you may be asking yourself the question: how can you have more than one table with the same name? The answer is to have tables in different schemas. I do this to partition the data based on the area of concern. It allows security to be assigned conveniently. A lot of people don't use schemas. I love them. But this article isn't about schemas. In the situation I have two tables:Contact.PersonEmployee.PersonThe first contains the basic, more public information such as the name. The second contains mostly HR specific information. I then mapped these tables to two classes. I stuck to a Table per Class (TPC) mapping, because of problems I've had in the past implementing inheritance with EF. The following code gives you the basic contents of the classes.[Table("Person", Schema = "Employee")]public class Employee {   ...   public int PersonId { get; set; }   [ForeignKey("PersonId")]   public virtual Person Person { get; set; }}[Table("Person", Schema = "Contact")]public class Person {   [Key]   public int Id { get; set; }   ...}This seemingly simple scenario just doesn't work. The problem occurs when you try to add a Person to the DbContext. You get an InvalidOperationException with the following text:The entity types 'Employee' and 'Person' cannot share table 'People' because they are not in the same type hierarchy or do not have a valid one to one foreign key relationship with matching primary keys between them..This is interesting for a couple of reasons. First, there is no People table in my database. Second, I have used the SetInitializer method to stop a database from being created, so it shouldn't be thinking about new tables. The solution to my problem was to change the name of my Employee.Person table. I decided to name it Employee.Employee. It's not ideal, but it gets me past the EF limitation. I hope that this article will help someone else that has the same problem.

  • Server Migration Checklist

    - by merrillaldrich
During the past six months or so I have had to manage quite a lot of SQL Server migration/consolidation, and with each effort I’ve refined a checklist to try to make things go more smoothly. I just hate getting that call after a migration where something unexpected is broken :-). What follows is imperfect, but I thought I’d throw it up here anyway, if only as a starting point for other people. Some basic assumptions: I have been moving SQL Server 2005 Standard Edition and SQL Server 2000 data, so...(read more)

  • Database Mirroring Performance Monitoring

Many people deploy performance monitoring solutions in a "one-size-fits-all" manner. That is, they tend to build a solution that can be easily deployed to multiple servers and capture basic information from each server. The trouble is that not every server is identical, not even within the same shop. For example, not every server may have database mirroring deployed, which means your performance monitoring solution may be missing some critical pieces of information with regards to monitoring database mirroring.

  • How do I create a background image on web page?

    - by kasha
I am a new designer so hopefully this question isn't too basic! How do I create a background image on a webpage for a programmer? I designed the page in photoshop and I would like to know how to send the background image (the 25% opacity buildings overlay). I would be happy to send the main image (but it is too large and I imagine would slow the site and loading time drastically). here is the link to the design... http://problemio.com/home_page_1_1.pdf

  • If I were to start an Android or iPhone app or game, what program should I use?

    - by John
I don't really know a lot about programming and the only things I do is using codes with Gamemaker, but I have read that it is too basic and it can't be used with iPhone or Android. Is there anything free that I can use to make games for those platforms? Or if not, any suggestions for engines or anything else? I was wondering about Unity, for example, is that a good investment to use for making games?

  • How do I configure the mouse to raise and lower windows

    - by user288496
I've just installed 14.04 and cannot find the congfuration screen to control how mouse clicks are acted on by the window manager, and then optionally passed to the application. I want to set the sane traditional unix behaviour of: - 'focus follows mouse': done. - 'never auto-raise': done. - 'raise when click on border or title': Can't find the option. A middle button click on the tile does lower a window - but traditionally it would also raise the botton window. I can set 'raise on any click' - but that is absolutely hopeless when you are trying to copy text from a lower window.

  • Any good site that teaches C++?

    - by Shinmaru
I am searching for any good site that teaches C++, that can explain most to all things about it(general) and has a decent active community. About Me: I am new to programming(knows nothing of it, so please bare with me), I have only learned(to a very basic form) LUA scripting Language, so yes I am your complete newbie. I got interested in programming, from scripting in LUA, so you can say it was my small stepping stone, One would basically take a course in college, but not everyone is well funded for that and I can't buy books for the same said reason(yes I'm somewhat poor, only money for essentials and bills), I'm not trying to get sympathy, just stating my conditions. and Please, something in between the lines of 'Programming for Dummies'(I'm not the brightest crayon in the box), I know this will not be easy, but your help will be most appreciated. I would learn for either Windows and/or Linux/Unix. I use both. Site(s) I know: Cplusplus.org(quite inactive and tutorials are a little for the programming savvy.

  • Returning status code where one of many errors could have occured

    - by yttriuszzerbus
I'm developing a PHP login component which includes functions to manipulate the User object, such as $User->changePassword(string $old, string $new) What I need some advice with is how to return a status, as the function can either succeed (no further information needs to be given) or fail (and the calling code needs to know why, for example incorrect password, database problem etc.) I've come up with the following ideas: Unix-style: return 0 on success, another code on failure. This doesn't seem particularly common in PHP and the language's type-coercion messes with this (a function returning FALSE on success?) This seems to be the best I can think of. Throw an exception on error. PHP's exception support is limited, and this will make life harder for anybody trying to use the functions. Return an array, containing a boolean for "success" or not, and a string or an int for "failure status" if applicable. None of these seem particularly appealing, does anyone have any advice or better ideas?
