• How are generics implemented?

  This is the question from compiler internals perspective. I am interested in generics, not templates (C++), so I marked the question with C#. Not Java, because AFAIK the generics in both languages differ in implementations. When I look at languages w/o generics it is pretty straightforward, you can validate the class definition, add it to hierarchy and that's it. But what to do with generic class, and more importantly how handle references to it? How to make sure that static fields are singular per instantiations (i.e. each time generic parameters are resolved). Let's say I see a call: var x = new Foo<Bar>(); Do I add new Foo_Bar class to hierarchy?   I want to develop a website that has family history information. Something like Ancestry.com but much simpler. I want to display photos, family tree, have logins and allow members to upload family photos,documents,stories and comments and have tags for the docs and photos and maybe a message board and blog. Also, this is not for the general public but just my extended family. I'd like each person to have their own page with a bio, pics and information. Is there anything that already does something like this? I don't want to waste time writing this if it already exists. thank you I'm familiar with asp.net and php.

• ADF is YouTubed

  A blog post along the lines of "your wishes are our command". ADF developers are hopefully aware of our ADF Insider Essentials recordings, a page full of presentations from small to large topics on all-things-ADF.  A couple of customers have pointed out these recordings aren't accessible via the iPad and other Apple OSX devices thanks to the recordings being wrapped in an Adobe Flash applet.   One of my most popular blog entries of all time is my Contracting Tips: Fixed Bid vs. T&M post from January, 2004.  This post consistently shows up in my referrers list, usually coming from a search engine.  Recently, Brent Ozar (@BrentO) wrote a great argument for why he always bills by the hour (a.k.a. Time & Materials or T&M) which itself was a response to Mark Richman’s (@mrichman) post on why he never bills by the hour (fixed bid).  Each article has good arguments, and I encourage you to read them both and choose the best approach for you. As for me, my experience parallels Brent’s and I historically have leaned toward the Time & Materials model.

• OSB, Service Callouts and OQL - Part 1

  Oracle Fusion Middleware customers use Oracle Service Bus (OSB) for virtualizing Service endpoints and implementing stateless service orchestrations. Behind the performance and speed of OSB, there are a couple of key design implementations that can affect application performance and behavior under heavy load. One of the heavily used feature in OSB is the Service Callout pipeline action for message enrichment and invoking multiple services as part of one single orchestration. Overuse of this feature, without understanding its internal implementation, can lead to serious problems. This post will delve into OSB internals, the problem associated with usage of Service Callout under high loads, diagnosing it via thread dump and heap dump analysis using tools like ThreadLogic and OQL (Object Query Language) and resolving it. The first section in the series will mainly cover the threading model used internally by OSB for implementing Route Vs. Service Callouts. Please refer to the blog post for more details.

• New Pluralsight app for Android will bring variable speed

  Usually, it is very interesting to compare the 'same' software applications and apps between various platforms, and the Pluralsight offline players are an outstanding example to have a closer look at. The original Silverlight desktop offline player, the iOS app of Pluralsight and the new HTML5 online player all have variable playback speed. Just the Android app doesn't. But not for long. A couple of days Pluralsight finally announced that their development department found a reliable solution to provide flexible speeds. For the brave ones among us, please have a look at the public beta they are offering on their blog article.  Please be aware of, that using any Pluralsight offline player requires to have a Plus subscription. Otherwise, you cannot use the application after all.

• transparent home directory encryption

  #1 I'm very new to the ubuntu home directory encryption or rather ecryptfs folder encryption. I read about the same within Dustin's blog & tried implementing it. Problem or query is my home directory is encrypted & has a www folder ... now when I reboot the system the decryption doesnt happen at startup/boot & apache is not able to find the files rather the folder www since it is not mounted ... in order to mount it I have to login .... is there a way by which an encrypted home / private folder can be mounted at boot without human intervention ? #2 I have installed ubuntu server 11.10 & had selected "encrypt home directory" when installing the same. With ubuntu things are working transparently even after reboot & without logging in. Kindly can anyone pls explain or guide on the same ?

• Is type safety worth the trade-offs?

  I began coding in in Python primarily where there is no type safety, then moved to C# and Java where there is. I found that I could work a bit more quickly and with less headaches in Python, but then again, my C# and Java apps are at much higher level of complexity so I have never given Python a true stress test I suppose. The Java and C# camps make it sound like without the type safety in place, most people would be running into all sorts of horrible bugs left an right and it would be more trouble than its worth. This is not a language comparison, so please do not address issues like compiled vs interpreted. Is type safety worth the hit to speed of development and flexibilty? WHY? to the people who wanted an example of the opinion that dynamic typing is faster: "Use a dynamically typed language during development.   I have a Joomla! 2.5 website, and I have to add a lightbox popup that will contain links to all articles from a specific category(+subs). If anyone can suggest all-in-one solution, that will be great! But generally I'm asking, how to list links to all articles from a specific category and its sub-categories in two/three columns? I know I can set Category blog View to output only article links, without full/introtext, but in this case links will all be in one column. I need at least two. A possibility of grouping article links by subcategory would be great as well (but this is the thing I can live without). How can this be done?
