    What I'm trying to do is this: XXX Some text here YYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYY ZZZZZZZZZ Body body body Sidebar! Body body body Sidebar! Body body body Sidebar! X, Y, and Z are images (3 images total). Y can stretch along the X axis, and does so above, to fill the available space. (But doesn't cause "Some text here" to get squished and start breaking into multiple lines) I'd like to keep the "Some text here" part in one line. A line breaking here will not end happily. Is this possible, or should I simplify the layout around HTML?

  • Span with white-space style in IE (7) applied _past_ end of span

    We've got an application where users can enter "notes" into a rich edit control (Telerik's RedEditor, but that doesn't matter here). We had a user enter notes from w/in Safari that had a <span></span> in the middle of the note, and that span had a style on it specifying white-space:pre The HTML of the note was in the form of: <div> This is a note <span class="Apple-tab-span" style="white-space: pre; "> </span> and here's more of the note. </div> Simple enough, the style should apply to the span, and the span had 4 spaces in it. There should have been 4 spaces in the resulting output. Here's the problem. IE seems to apply that white-space: pre; style not only to the span, but to the enclosing div! Therefore, this long line that should have wrapped since it's not in the span, now pushed the document out until the line fits on the page. What am I missing. I know IE has problems, but this doesn't seem right, even for IE. So, the question(s): 1) Am I correct that the white-space attribute should only have applied to the span? 2) Can this be resolved somehow? Remember, I'm not in control of the content being entered. And it's entered from a mac w/Safari and being viewed in IE.     I am trying to use div's to display content on my page. This is controlled with an onchange element in a select menu. It works perfectly but the problem is I want one div to close when another one is opened. The div's open fine but it does not close the others. An example code is below. What am I doing wrong?     Hi folks, From source1 and source2 i gather that IE9 will NOT support multi-column css3!! Since it is still the most popular browser (another thing i cannot understand), i am left but no other choice than to use Programming Power to make multi-columns work. Now, I use three divs that float to left, and which are manually filled with text. Please don't laugh i know its stupid! But I would wish to not to have to worry about the columns and just have a one piece of (un-interrupted) text which all goes into only 1 div, and then have a program smart enough to split it up into X equally wide columns. Question: before i start reinvent the wheel, what methods of programming power have you known that tackle this elegantly? Please suggest your best working multi-column layout sources so I can evaluate which option is the best (I will update the below table).   • Find a control by String from asp.net Web service

    Well since it seems relatively difficult to send the object of a WebControl over JSON using jquery.ajax() I've decided to send the name of the control as a string because I know how to do that. Then I promptly realized that, from a web service, I don't actually know how to search for a control by ID name. Since its a service I can't seem to get Control.FindControl() to work so does anyone have ideas or suggestions? All I'm trying to do is call a databind() on my radcombobox. Thanks in advance! For any of you that knows anything about asp.net/rad controls - I'm basically updating a database and want the radcombobox to be in sync with that database again after adding something, before I autoselect what was just added. Other than databind do i have to call anything to refresh that list? Thanks again!

    I can't believe I'm having to ask this, but I'm at my wit's end. I'm trying to display 2 form fields inline, but with the label for each field on the top.   • Sprite background image lags on mouse hover

    I have basic DOM menu that has sprite background images for the first level of "LI"s. It works just fine, but I guess there is some problem and instead of switching the image right away on hover it goes blank and after about a second the hover image "appears" (shifts). That happens only on first hovering. After that it's smooth like it's supposed to be. Refresh the page and there it is again... Frustrating...   • cannot eliminate space between 2 horizontal divs inside containing div

    Should be easy, right? Just set the outer containing div's padding to zero, and set the two side-by-side divs inside the outer div to have margin:0 but that's having no effect on the space between the 2 horizontal divs. What I need is the red-outlined left div to touch the green-outlined right-side div. Despite my effort using padding and margin, the space between the 2 divs will not go away.
