• Advantages of Hudson and Sonar over manual process or homegrown scripts.

  My coworker and I recently got into a debate over a proposed plan at our workplace. We've more or less finished transitioning our Java codebase into one managed and built with Maven. Now, I'd like for us to integrate with Hudson and Sonar or something similar. My reasons for this are that it'll provide a 'zero-click' build step to provide testers with new experimental builds, that it will let us deploy applications to a server more easily, that tools such as Sonar will provide us with well-needed metrics on code coverage, Javadoc, package dependencies and the like. He thinks that the overhead of getting up to speed with two new frameworks is unacceptable, and that we should simply double down on documentation and create our own scripts for deployment. Since we plan on some aggressive rewrites to pay down the technical debt previous developers incurred (gratuitous use of Java's Serializable interface as a file storage mechanism that has predictably bit us in the ass) he argues that we can document as we go, and that we'll end up changing a large swath of code in the process anyways. I contend that having accurate metrics that Sonar (or fill in your favorite similar tool) provide gives us a good place to start for any refactoring efforts, not to mention general maintenance -- after all, knowing which classes are the most poorly documented, even if it's just a starting point, is better than seat-of-the-pants guessing. Am I wrong, and trying to introduce more overhead than we really need? Some more background: an alumni of our company is working at a Navy research lab now and suggested these two tools in particular as one they've had great success with using. My coworker and I have also had our share of friendly disagreements before -- he's more of the "CLI for all, compiles Gentoo in his spare time and uses Git" and I'm more of a "Give me an intuitive GUI, plays with XNA and is fine with SVN" type, so there's definitely some element of culture clash here.

• Why does my game loop speed vary on different platforms with the same hardware?

  I've got a serious issue with my game loop. This loop varies in time with the platform and with the same hardware. This is a list of FPS achieved: - Windows ======= 140 to 150 - Linux ======= 120 to 125 - Windows(WINE) ======= 125 to 135 And since my game loop is fixed timestep, the speed of the game is not stable. • Java stored procedures in Oracle, a good idea?

  I'm considering using a Java stored procedure as a very small shim to allow UDP communication from a PL/SQL package. Oracle does not provide a UTL_UDP to match its UTL_TCP. There is a 3rd party XUTL_UDP that uses Java, but it's closed source (meaning I can't see how it's implemented, not that I don't want to use closed source). An important distinction between PL/SQL and Java stored procedures with regards to networking: PL/SQL sockets are closed when dbms_session.reset_package is called, but Java sockets are not. So if you want to keep a socket open to avoid the tear-down/reconnect costs, you can't do it in sessions that are using reset_package (like mod_plsql or mod_owa HTTP requests). I haven't used Java stored procedures in a production capacity in Oracle before. This is a very large, heavily-used database, and this particular shim would be heavily used as well (it serves as a UDP bridge between a PL/SQL RFC 5424 syslog client and the local rsyslog daemon). Am I opening myself up for woe and horror, or are Java stored procedures stable and robust enough for usage in 10g? I'm wondering about issues with the embedded JVM, the jit, garbage collection, or other things that might impact a heavily used database.

  I Googled and Googled and I just cannot find a solution to this problem: sudo apt-get install <whatever> Gives me: WARNING: The following packages cannot be authenticated! and Install these packages without verification [y/N]? I cannot find a decent solution. The closest I got was to run: sudo apt-get install debian-keyring debian-archive-keyring But then, even thought, and against my good judgment I agreed to install the package without confirmation, I get: (I replaced http with XXXX because of forum limitations). • Can't enable wireless lan on Fujitsu Siemens A1665G with Ubuntu 11.10 installed

  I saw my old Notebook yesterday and wanted to make that work again. On Windows XP the wireless worked still fine. Then I installed new Ubuntu 11.10 32bit and I'm sadly not able to make the wireless enabled. [I replaced Win XP entirely] lspci lists following network: 08:0a.0 Network controller: Broadcom Corporation BCM4318 [AirForce One 54g] 802.11g Wireless LAN Controller (rev 02) So after recommendation from this link I installed the b43 firmware module. iwconfig prints the following: wlan0 IEEE 802.11bg ESSID:off/any Mode:Managed Access Point: Not-Associatd Tx-Power=off Retry long limit:7 RTS thr:off Fragment thr:off Power Management: off As you can see, my wireless lan adapter is not turned on. sudo iwconfig wlan0 txpower auto Doesn't change anything. The question is now, how I could enable the hard blocked wireless LAN. There is no hardware switch for wlan integrated. However there is a button to change the state. I always thought this would be software sided, but it seems to make some hardware changes as well... The wireless LED is also not blinking (as it did on windows xp) I reset bios and searched for some settings in there, but it has only a few options and nothing to do with wireless settings, nothing works here.. At last I tried to install the acer hotkeys but I was not able to manage that. I installed the acerhkgui package, but in initializing progress, it was not able to compile acer hotkeys for my machine. There was a message that asm/linkage.h was not found while compiling. Do you have any ideas what I could do to make this hard blocked stuff disabled and my wireless card work? PS: I also tried sudo rm /dev/rfkill and a reboot to reinit that stuff... No success :(

• A Look Inside JSR 360 - CLDC 8

  If you didn't notice during JavaOne the Java Micro Edition took a major step forward in its consolidation with Java Standard Edition when JSR 360 was proposed to the JCP community. Over the last couple of years there has been a focus to move Java ME back in line with it's big brother Java SE. We see evidence of this in JCP itself which just recently merged the ME and SE/EE Executive Committees into a single Java Executive Committee. But just before that occurred JSR 360 was proposed and approved for development on October 29. So let's take a look at what changes are now being proposed. In a way JSR 360 is returning back to the original roots of Java ME when it was first introduced. It was indeed a subset of the JDK 4 language, but as Java progressed many of the language changes were not implemented in the Java ME. Back then the tradeoff was still a functionality, footprint trade off but the major market was feature phones. Today the market has changed and CLDC, while it will still target feature phones, will have it primary emphasis on embedded devices like wireless modules, smart meters, health care monitoring and other M2M devices. The major changes will come in three areas: language feature changes, library changes, and consolidating the Generic Connection Framework.  There have been three Java SE versions that have been implemented since JavaME was first developed so the language feature changes can be divided into changes that came in JDK 5 and those in JDK 7, which mostly consist of the project Coin changes. There were no language changes in JDK 6 but the changes from JDK 5 are: Assertions - Assertions enable you to test your assumptions about your program. For example, if you write a method that calculates the speed of a particle, you might assert that the calculated speed is less than the speed of light. In the example code below if the interval isn't between 0 and and 1,00 the an error of "Invalid value?" would be thrown. private void setInterval(int interval) { assert interval > 0 && interval <= 1000 : "Invalid value?" } Generics - Generics add stability to your code by making more of your bugs detectable at compile time. Code that uses generics has many benefits over non-generic code with: Stronger type checks at compile time. Elimination of casts. Enabling programming to implement generic algorithms. Enhanced for Loop - the enhanced for loop allows you to iterate through a collection without having to create an Iterator or without having to calculate beginning and end conditions for a counter variable. The enhanced for loop is the easiest of the new features to immediately incorporate in your code. In this tip you will see how the enhanced for loop replaces more traditional ways of sequentially accessing elements in a collection. void processList(Vector<string> list) { for (String item : list) { ... Autoboxing/Unboxing - This facility eliminates the drudgery of manual conversion between primitive types, such as int and wrapper types, such as Integer.  Hashtable<Integer, string=""> data = new Hashtable<>(); void add(int id, String value) { data.put(id, value); } Enumeration - Prior to JDK 5 enumerations were not typesafe, had no namespace, were brittle because they were compile time constants, and provided no informative print values. JDK 5 added support for enumerated types as a full-fledged class (dubbed an enum type). In addition to solving all the problems mentioned above, it allows you to add arbitrary methods and fields to an enum type, to implement arbitrary interfaces, and more. Enum types provide high-quality implementations of all the Object methods. They are Comparable and Serializable, and the serial form is designed to withstand arbitrary changes in the enum type. enum Season {WINTER, SPRING, SUMMER, FALL}; } private Season season; void setSeason(Season newSeason) { season = newSeason; } Varargs - Varargs eliminates the need for manually boxing up argument lists into an array when invoking methods that accept variable-length argument lists. A resource is an object that must be closed after the program is finished with it. The try-with-resources statement ensures that each resource is closed at the end of the statement.  try (DataInputStream is = new DataInputStream(...)) { return is.readDouble(); } Simplified varargs method invocation - The Java compiler generates a warning at the declaration site of a varargs method or constructor with a non-reifiable varargs formal parameter. Java SE 7 introduced a compiler option -Xlint:varargs and the annotations @SafeVarargs and @SuppressWarnings({"unchecked", "varargs"}) to supress these warnings. On the library side there are new features that will be added to satisfy the language requirements above and some to improve the currently available set of APIs.  The library changes include: Collections update - New Collection, List, Set and Map, Iterable and Iteratator as well as implementations including Hashtable and Vector. Most of the work is too support generics String - New StringBuilder and CharSequence as well as a Stirng formatter. The javac compiler  now uses the the StringBuilder instead of String Buffer. Since StringBuilder is synchronized there is a performance increase which has necessitated the wahat String constructor works. Comparable interface - The comparable interface works with Collections, making it easier to reuse. Try with resources - Closeable and AutoCloseable Annotations - While support for Annotations is provided it will only be a compile time support. SuppressWarnings, Deprecated, Override NIO - There is a subset of NIO Buffer that have been in use on the of the graphics packages and needs to be pulled in and also support for NIO File IO subset. Platform extensibility via Service Providers (ServiceLoader) - ServiceLoader interface dos late bindings of interface to existing implementations. It helpe to package an interface and behavior of the implementation at a later point in time.Provider classes must have a zero-argument constructor so that they can be instantiated during loading. They are located and instantiated on demand and are identified via a provider-configuration file in the METAINF/services resource directory. JSR 360 represents a rare opportunity to consolidated and reintegrate parts that were duplicated in other specifications into a single specification, upgrade the APIs as well provide new functionality. The proposal is to specify a combined GCF specification that can be used with Java ME or Java SE and be backwards compatible with previous implementations. Because of size limitations as well as the complexity of the some features like InvokeDynamic and Unicode 6 will not be included. Additionally, any language or library changes in JDK 8 will be not be included. On the upside, with all the changes being made, backwards compatibility will still be maintained. JSR 360 is a major step forward for Java ME in terms of platform modernization, language alignment, and embedded support. • Complex Release Vehicle Management

  I'm looking into improving our build and release system. We are a .Net/Windows shop, and I don't see any really good tools for Windows for generating the files that are to be dropped in patch or hotfix. We are currently using TFSBuild 2010 with Windows Workflows for our continuous integration builds as well as our daily full build which includes an Installshield package for deployment. What is a good way of generating the list of files to be included in a "patch" style release, where one does not redistribute all the files, but only those necessary to accomplish the necessary changes? Are there any open source tools that work well for this, or do teams usually roll their own? I have considered using Beyond Compare but I would prefer something open source. The file "patch" creation must be 100% automatable. Which release vehicles really ought to be patch style? And which releases should replace all system files related to our application? Assume we have a very large amount of resources necessary to maintain. Is there any established material that is trusted within the industry for strategies about this? I realize it is different for "enterprise" rather than with typical websites. I am looking more for "enterprise" strategies due to our product distribution style. tl;dr Looking for info on how to ship more reliable packages?

• Nvidia API mismatch

  I had planned a day of relaxing with Portal 2 but on starting Steam (for the first time in a couple of weeks) I was greeted with the following message in the terminal: Error: API mismatch: the NVIDIA kernel module has version 270.41.19, but this NVIDIA driver component has version 270.41.06. Please make sure that the kernel module and all NVIDIA driver components have the same version. I'll confess I don't really know what it's talking about when it says driver. The verion of nvidia-current is 270.41.19. I thought that was the driver and module, all in one. I use the X-SWAT PPA and I have noted that the nvidia-settings package has boosted to 275.09.07. As this is just a settings application, I don't think this mismatch has anything to do with this. It's also not the same version as the problem being described. I'd rather not purge back to the standard Nvidia driver as it's less than stable on my GTX580. I would accept an answer that takes the manual setup and makes it recompile when the kernel recompiles (ie, some DKMS wizardry) but it has to work. I don't want to drop back to text-mode every time I restart after a kernel upgrade. Edit: Minecraft works without a single complaint about driver versions. Penumbra dies with roughly the same error when entering a game.

• Efficient use of Bundling

  One of the discussions I am having with customers and consulting people is about the use of Bundling and its appropriate use. We introduced Bundling post release in the V2.2 code line to allow partners and consultants to build solutions using the Configuration Tools objects such as UI Maps, Service Scripts, Business Objects, Business Services etc and then export and migrate them as solutions. Whilst that was the original intent I have found a few teams using the facility for other data and then complaining about the efficiency or relevance of the tool. Here are a number of guidelines to help optimize the use of Bundling for your implementation: Not all objects can be bundled. Only specific objects in the product can be bundled. These are targetted at Configuration Tools objects and a select group of other objects that are required for these objects. Maintenance Objects with the option "Eligble for Bundling" set to Y (and also contains a Bundling Add BO). Add objects to the Bundle as you complete them - Bundling can have issues with sequencing objects. The best way of combating this is to add objects to the bundle as you complete them. This will help with making sure you sequence the loading of the objects as you are building them in the correct order. Remember Bundling was designed for developers and partners to deliver solutions. If you leave adding objects to a Bundle using the Bundle Export zones then you will have less control of what sequence they are applied and this can cause timing issues. Bundling takes the latest revision  - If you combine Bundling with Revision Control then the Bundling will take the latest release of the object at the time of the export operation. Bundling and Version Control products - If you use a version control tool to control your java code then you can also check in the Bundle to associate a release between code and a bundle. Bundling is quite a powerful feature of the Oracle Utilities Application Framework that allows sales, partners, consultants and customers to package and import their Configuration Tools based solutions.

• Game-a-Week One

  Anyone who chats with me on a semi-regular basis knows I am absolutely horrible at completing something from beginnning to end.  Often times I'll begin something, lose interest at some point, and end up moving onto the next thing.  For example, I have 1/2 a full game created, 1/3 of a novel written, and half of a model set created.  Needless to say, unless I have some sort of pressure to finish something I don't stick to it. Recently however one of my online buddies challenged me to create a simple game.  The start date was last Thursday and the final game needed to be delivered by this next Sunday (giving me just over a week).  However, I am going out of town this Friday so will need to deliver it by Thursday, giving me exactly 1 week to develop a game.  Here is what the game needed to include: The player should be able to shoot Shooting things should score points Sounds very simple, but given a single week to produce all art assets plus the game isn't an easy task.  So far I've developed: An animated Main Menu that loads via script files, allows the user to start a new game or exit the game The game is 3D and the player can move around the play area with an 'over-the-shoulder' camera HUD elements are drawn to display the player's current score When the player presses Esc they are shown a pause menu where they can resume the game by pressing Esc again, or quit the game by pressing Space There are also 2 items implemented that don't work perfectly: JigLibX physics library implementation On the main menu there is an arrow symbol that rotates to always point at your mouse I've got 2 days of development left so hopefully I can get collision working, some of the art cleaned up, and some more of the camera functionality working.  Also, I'll need to take some time to package the game up which hopefully shouldn't take too long.

• How to use the Raring/Saucy netboot installer to install Precise?

  We have a Haswell motherboard with onboard ethernet controllers which are not supported in the Precise (3.2) kernel. However, we're using netboot installation, and we'd really like to stick with the LTS version. Once the Precise install is completed, we can install the linux-generic-lts-saucy package, which gets us the ethernet hardware support which is ultimately required. So, our options are: Plug in a USB-Ethernet (or even wifi) dongle, perform the install that way. Modify the Precise installer to somehow include the required driver (a udeb, or some early_command invocation?) Modify the Raring installer (3.8 kernel, which supports the device) to instead install Precise. If it's possible the third option seems like the simplest and most logical to me. Now, we are already using the precise-updates installer (Aug 2013), as opposed to the original April 2012 installer. However, the precise-updates installer still appears to use the 3.2 kernel. I'm already comfortable with preseeding and modifying the netboot initrd. So my question is, can I somehow modify the Raring/Saucy netboot initrd to instead install Precise? Thanks.

• Test Data in a Distributed System

  A question that has been vexing me lately has been about how to effectively test (end-to-end) features in a distributed system. Particuarly, how to effectively manage (through time) test data for feature testing. The system in question is a typical SOA setup. The composition is done in JavaScript when call to several REST APIs. Each service is built as an independent block. Each service has some kind of persistent storage (SQL Server in most cases). The main issue at the moment is how to approach test data when testing end-to-end features. Functional end-to-end testing occurs through the UI, and it is therefore necessary for test data to be set up before the test run (this could be manual or automated testing). As is typical in a distributed system, identifiers from one service are used as a link in another service. So, some level of synchronization needs to be present in the data to effectively test. What is the best way to manage and set up this data after a successful deployment to a test environment? For example, is it better to manage this test data inside each service? Or package it together with the testing suite? Does that testing suite exist as a separate project? I'm interested in design guidance about how to store and manage this test data as the application features evolve.

• how to install 13.04 on a partitioned hardrive

  First, not a computer literate person, not even a novice- so please use small words. I recently made the switch to ubuntu, it came preloaded on my new laptop that I order from a big tech dot com site. The version on it is 12.04 (i think) and 64bit. This system has a lot that I like but it is quirky for me to say the least. Apparently I have held broken packages and have no way of knowing how to find them. I discovered this when trying to download (from software center) VLC so that I could watch some movies I had on an external hard-drive. Unmet dependencies error and held broken package errors abound while trying to fix the problem. Ive scoured this site and other and followed almost all the suggestions to a T but still I am unable to fix anything. My computer is partitioned (but I don't even know how to get to the otherside so to speak). I would like to know; can I put the newer 13.04 OS on one side of the partition and then delete the older version on the other side? or, can I install 13.04 over the existing 12.04? What would I need to do this? An obstacle that I have is this, I am currently serving in Afghanistan so going someplace to buy something or running down to a computer store for service support is out of the question. I very much appreciate your help, cause right now this computer is nothing more than a word processor, which would be fine if all i wanted was a word processor. Thanks in advance.

• Small change in MVVM Light Toolkit templates for Blend 4 RC

  Ah, the joy of new releases… You will find that the MVVM Light Toolkit works fine with Visual Studio 2010 RTM and Blend 4 RC except for a few adjustments: Blend templates The path to the Expression Blend 4 project templates changed. If you start Expression Blend 4 RC now, you will likely not see the MVVM Light templates in the New Project dialog.   New Project dialog with MVVM Light To restore the templates, follow the steps: Open Windows Explorer Navigate to C:\Users\[username]\Documents\Expression (or simply type My Documents in Windows Explorer and then open the Expression folder). Change the name of the “Blend 4 beta” folder into “Blend 4”. That’s it, you should now see the templates in the New Project dialog in Blend 4. Note that since the new name is “Blend 4”, I hope that I won’t need to do the same exercise when Blend 4 RTM is released! Windows Phone 7 templates Since the Windows Phone 7 tools are not ready yet for Visual Studio 2010 RTM and Blend 4 RC, the templates in the Silverlight for Windows Phone folders will not work. You will get an error if you try to create a new such project in the newly released environment. I hesitated to remove these templates from the current packages, but honestly that is a lot of trouble for a very short time before the tools for Windows Phone 7 are released (note: I don’t have any information as to when these tools will be released). In the mean time, just don’t create a WinPhone7 application. Reminder: If you want to write code for Windows Phone 7, you need to keep the Visual Studio 2010 RC as well as Expression Blend 4 beta.
